An Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopic Investigation Of Molecular Interactions At Hydroxyapatite-Collagen Interfaces In Healthy And Diseased (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) Human Bone And Biomineralized Tissue-Engineered Bone, Scott Andrew Payne Jan 2018

An Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopic Investigation Of Molecular Interactions At Hydroxyapatite-Collagen Interfaces In Healthy And Diseased (Osteogenesis Imperfecta) Human Bone And Biomineralized Tissue-Engineered Bone, Scott Andrew Payne

Materials and Nanotechnology

At its primary level (nm scale) bone is a nanocomposite consisting of a mineral (hydroxyapatite) phase which gives bone its strength and an organic (type I collagen) phase giving bone its fracture toughness. Hydroxyapatite, (HAP) Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, is the most abundant mineral in the human body. Bone tissue has a complex hierarchical structure spanning multiple length scales (cm to nm). Characterization of mineral composition in biomineralized tissues such as bone at their primary level, is very challenging and requires instrumentation with nanometer-scale spatial resolution. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) combines high spatial resolution with visual correlation of diffraction and elemental-composition data. Electron …

Understanding Students’ Perceptions Of Difficulty And The Effect Difficulty Has On Mathematical Anxiety, Caleb Bridger Larson Jan 2018

Understanding Students’ Perceptions Of Difficulty And The Effect Difficulty Has On Mathematical Anxiety, Caleb Bridger Larson

Mathematics

There exists a growing atmosphere surrounding mathematics that allows individuals to exclaim their belief they are deficient in math without any societal judgement. Compared to a state like being illiterate, we have reached a stage where it is acceptable to be math illiterate as well as hate math. To discover why so many people have this strong distaste towards math, we look towards the difficulty level of the subject. Students cite difficulty as one of the main reasons that they dislike math, so to fully understand the issue at hand, we must first understand students’ perceptions of difficulty in mathematics. …

Leveraging Social Science Expertise In Immigration Policy, Ming Hsu Chen Jan 2018

Leveraging Social Science Expertise In Immigration Policy, Ming Hsu Chen

Faculty Scholarship

The longstanding uncertainty about how policymakers should grapple with social science demonstrating racism persists in the modern administrative state. This Essay examines the uses and misuses of social science and expertise in immigration policymaking. More specifically, it highlights three immigration policies that dismiss social scientific findings and expertise as part of presidential and agency decision- making: border control, crime control, and extreme vetting of refugees to prevent terrorism. The Essay claims that these rejections of expertise undermine both substantive and procedural protections for immigrants and undermine important functions of the administrative state as a curb on irrationality in policymaking. It …

Experimental Evaluation Of A Naca 0021 Airfoil Employing Shape-Memory Alloy For Active Flow Control, Adam James Stolt Jan 2018

Experimental Evaluation Of A Naca 0021 Airfoil Employing Shape-Memory Alloy For Active Flow Control, Adam James Stolt

Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics

Current aircraft use actuators to alter the wing geometry and generate the ideal flight characteristics which is known to be a method of active flow control. By replacing the heavy electric and hydraulic actuators currently used in aircraft wings with lighter and smaller shape memory alloys (SMAs), the mass of an aircraft can be reduced. Therefore, research was conducted to design and build an airfoil using SMAs as the actuator for improving the airfoil’s aerodynamic performance. The SMA actuated airfoil was evaluated using advanced flow diagnostic methods and was found to operate with a higher lift coefficient than the non-actuated …

Biofilm Formation Of Escherichia Coli From Surface Soils Is Influenced By Variation In Cell Envelope, Iron Metabolism, And Attachment Factor Genes, Morgan L. Petersen Jan 2018

Biofilm Formation Of Escherichia Coli From Surface Soils Is Influenced By Variation In Cell Envelope, Iron Metabolism, And Attachment Factor Genes, Morgan L. Petersen

Microbiological Sciences

Biofilm formation may increase survival and persistence of Escherichia coli in the highly variable conditions of soil environments, though it remains unknown the extent variation in biofilm formation affects survival. We asked what genetic traits influence biofilm formation in phylogroup D E. coli isolates from surface soils, and are they associated with the soil environment? Biofilm density was analyzed and compared with soil environment characteristics. Isolates produced more biofilm per unit growth at 15°C than 37°C. Biofilm formation was greater in soil isolates than fecal isolates and in soils with moisture and higher calcium and pH levels. A GWAS analysis …

Conducting The Coded Message Songs Of Slavery: Context, Connotation, And Performance Preparation, Rebecca Lynn Raber Jan 2018

Conducting The Coded Message Songs Of Slavery: Context, Connotation, And Performance Preparation, Rebecca Lynn Raber

Music

The coded message songs of slavery are a mysterious and fascinating entity. Within the lyrics of these seemingly innocuous plantation songs are coded messages for escape, messages that provided secret information to enslaved workers on Antebellum plantations. Over the course of more than 250 years of slavery on American soil, countless enslaved Africans found freedom through the use of coded message songs and the Underground Railroad. What are these songs? Which lyrics provided this secret information? How can a study of this music provide a better musical experience for conductors, singers, and listeners? This disquisition offers answers to these important …

Integrative Data Analysis Of Microarray And Rna-Seq, Qi Wang Jan 2018

Integrative Data Analysis Of Microarray And Rna-Seq, Qi Wang

Statistics

Background: Microarray and RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) are two commonly used high-throughput technologies for gene expression profiling for the past decades. For global gene expression studies, both techniques are expensive, and each has its unique advantages and limitations. Integrative analysis of these two types of data would provide increased statistical power, reduced cost, and complementary technical advantages. However, the complete different mechanisms of the high-throughput techniques make the two types of data highly incompatible. Methods: Based on the degrees of compatibility, the genes are grouped into different clusters using a novel clustering algorithm, called Boundary Shift Partition (BSP). For each cluster, …

Phosphorus Dynamics And Crop Productivity In Bakken Crude-Oil Remediated Soils, Samantha Jo Croat Jan 2018

Phosphorus Dynamics And Crop Productivity In Bakken Crude-Oil Remediated Soils, Samantha Jo Croat

Soil Science

Thermal desorption (TD), a remediation method used to remove hydrocarbons from contaminated soils, may cause changes in soil properties that threaten soil function and plant productivity. The goal of this research is to better understand the effect that TD treatment has on soils intended for agricultural use. A series of soil phosphorus (P) sorption and desorption experiments were conducted on soils before and after TD treatment to determine P availability for plant uptake and risk for run-off. TD-treated soils retained more P, likely due to mineral transformations of Fe- and Al-oxides. In addition, a three-year field study using mixtures of …

Investigating Statistical Vs. Practical Significance Of The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Two-Sample Test Using Power Simulations And Resampling Procedures, Lincoln Gary Larson Jan 2018

Investigating Statistical Vs. Practical Significance Of The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Two-Sample Test Using Power Simulations And Resampling Procedures, Lincoln Gary Larson

Statistics

This research examines the power of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov two-sample test. The motivation for this research is a large data set containing soil salinity values. One problem encountered was that the power of the Kolmogorov-Smirnov two-sample test became extremely high due to the large sample size. This extreme power resulted in statistically significant differences between two distributions when no practically significant difference was present. This research used resampling procedures to create simulated null distributions for the test statistic. These null distributions were used to obtain power approximations for the Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests under differing effect sizes. The research shows that the power …

Predicting Soil Health And Function Of The Barnes Catena Using Evapotranspiration, Vegetative, Geologic, And Terrain Attributes In The Eastern Glaciated Plains Of North Dakota, Meyer Patrick Bohn Jan 2018

Predicting Soil Health And Function Of The Barnes Catena Using Evapotranspiration, Vegetative, Geologic, And Terrain Attributes In The Eastern Glaciated Plains Of North Dakota, Meyer Patrick Bohn

Soil Science

The benchmark Barnes soil series is an extensive northern Great Plains upland Hapludoll that is vital to the region. Accelerated erosion has degraded Barnes agricultural soil quality, but with unknown extent or severity. Samples from three extensive Barnes soil map units, stratified by evapotranspiration values, were collected to 50 cm and analyzed for chemical, morphologic, and physical properties germane to edaphic function. Multi-scale terrain attributes and remote-sensed soil proxies, and geologic covariates were implemented with Cubist to model soil properties. Best models included SOC, EC, pH, SOC-IC, and sand content. Pedons were classified with a clustering algorithm into six classes. …

A Comparison Of Methods Taking Into Account Asymmetry When Evaluating Differential Expression In Gene Expression Experiments, Seguy Tchakounte Wakem Jan 2018

A Comparison Of Methods Taking Into Account Asymmetry When Evaluating Differential Expression In Gene Expression Experiments, Seguy Tchakounte Wakem

Statistics

Gene expression technologies allow expression levels to be compared across treatments for thousands of genes simultaneously. Asymmetry in the empirical distribution of the test statistics from the analysis of a gene expression experiment is often observed. Statistical methods exist for identifying differentially expressed (DE) genes while controlling multiple testing error while taking into account the asymmetry of the distribution of the effect sizes. This paper compares three statistical methods (Modified Q-value, Modified SAM, and Asymmetric Local False Discovery Rate) used to identify differentially expressed (DE) genes that take into account such patterns while controlling false discovery rate (FDR). The results …

Comparative Analysis Of Traditional And Modified Decode Method In Small Sample Gene Expression Experiments, Katie Neset Jan 2018

Comparative Analysis Of Traditional And Modified Decode Method In Small Sample Gene Expression Experiments, Katie Neset

Statistics

Background: The DECODE method integrates differential co-expression and differential expression analysis methods to better understand biological functions of genes and their associations with disease. The DECODE method originally was designed to analyze large sample gene expression experiments, however most gene expression experiments consist of small sample sizes. This paper proposes modified test statistic to replace the traditional test statistic in the DECODE method. Using three simulations studies, we compare the performances of the modified and traditional DECODE methods using measures of sensitivity, positive predictive value (PPV), false discovery rate (FDR), and overall error rate for genes found to be highly …

Mean-Swap Variance, Portfolio Theory And Asset Pricing, Jhan Wang Jan 2018

Mean-Swap Variance, Portfolio Theory And Asset Pricing, Jhan Wang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The primary focus of this dissertation is a new risk measure, Swap Variance (SwV), and its applications to expected utility maximization, portfolio theory, and capital asset pricing models (CAPM) with loss aversion and gain preference. Superior to the classical mean-variance (MV) model, the mean-swap variance (MSwV) efficiency is consistent with expected utility maximization for all concave utility without any restriction on the form of either utility function or return distributions. Specifically, the MSwV efficiency is necessary and sufficient to the second-degree stochastic dominance (SSD). Thus, the SSD optimization can be consistently replicated by the SwV minimization for given means. The …

Calcium is an important integrative component of the human body and critical for human health. It has been well established that calcium intake is helpful in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, which has become one of the most serious public health problems across the world. However, community-dwelling adults with and without osteoporosis are rarely concerned or even not aware of the potential side effects of high or inappropriate doses of calcium intake. Some recent studies have revealed that excessive calcium intake might increase the risks of cardiovascular diseases. The purpose of this article was to review the health benefits, …

Building A Predictive Model On State Of Good Repair By Machine Learning Algorithm On Public Transportation Rolling Stock, Dilip Mistry Jan 2018

Building A Predictive Model On State Of Good Repair By Machine Learning Algorithm On Public Transportation Rolling Stock, Dilip Mistry

Transportation Logistics and Finance

Achieving and maintaining public transportation rolling stocks in a state of good repair is very crucial to provide safe and reliable services to riders. Besides, transit agencies who seek federal grants must keep their transit assets in a state of good repair. Therefore, transit agencies need an intelligent predictive model for analyzing their transportation rolling stocks, finding out the current condition, and predicting when they need to be replaced or rehabilitated. Since many transit agencies do not have good analytical tools for predicting the service life of vehicles, this simple predictive model would be a valuable resource for their state …
