Modelling The Effects Of Disease-Associated Single Amino Acid Variants And Rescuing The Effects By Small Molecules, Yunhui Peng
Modelling The Effects Of Disease-Associated Single Amino Acid Variants And Rescuing The Effects By Small Molecules, Yunhui Peng
All Dissertations
Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) is a variation of a single nucleotide in the genome. Some of these variations can cause a change of single amino acid in the corresponding protein, resulting in single amino acid variation (SAV). SAVs can lead to profound alterations of the corresponding biological processes and thus can be associated with many human diseases. This dissertation focuses on integration of existing and development of new computational approaches to model the effects of SAVs with the goal to reveal molecular mechanism of human diseases. Since proton transfer and pKa shifts are frequently attributed to disease causality, the proton …
Impacts Of Thermal Barrier Coating Morphology And Catalytic Properties On Low Temperature Combustion Engine In-Cylinder Processes, Thomas Powell
Impacts Of Thermal Barrier Coating Morphology And Catalytic Properties On Low Temperature Combustion Engine In-Cylinder Processes, Thomas Powell
All Dissertations
The inherent thermodynamic benefits of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) make it a likely choice for meeting the increasing demands of fuel economy legislation. Unfortunately HCCI suffers from reduced combustion efficiency and operational variability due to the buildup of carbon deposits. However, the unique thermo-kinetic nature and thermal sensitivity of Low Temperature Combustion (LTC) provides an opportunity to improve combustion efficiency through manipulation of the in-cylinder thermal environment. This body of work sought to create a wall temperature swing using a thin Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) to reduce combustion heat transfer and improve LTC combustion and thermal efficiencies. The first …

Trust-Based Control Of Robotic Manipulators In Collaborative Assembly In Manufacturing, Behzad Sadrfaridpour
All Dissertations
Human-robot interaction (HRI) is vastly addressed in the field of automation and manufacturing. Most of the HRI literature in manufacturing explored physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) and invested in finding means for ensuring safety and optimized effort sharing amongst a team of humans and robots. The recent emergence of safe, lightweight, and human-friendly robots has opened a new realm for human-robot collaboration (HRC) in collaborative manufacturing. For such robots with the new HRI functionalities to interact closely and effectively with a human coworker, new human-centered controllers that integrate both physical and social interaction are demanded. Social human-robot interaction (sHRI) has been …
Matching Potential In Randomized Complete Block Designs, Elaine Sotherden
Matching Potential In Randomized Complete Block Designs, Elaine Sotherden
All Dissertations
A small sheep experiment (nobs=32) planned to use a randomized complete block design (RCBD) treatment assignment of two binary factors. Complications creating the RCBD blocks prompted the researchers to discard the original blocks from the initial analysis plan and to rearrange their experimental units into new groups using linear covariate adjustment. We compare the blocks from the experiment's initial analysis plan and the groups from the researcher's linear covariate adjustment to groups formed by potential matching methods. We evaluate these three analysis approaches on the original sheep dataset and on simulated sheep datasets. We find that the groups created using …
Study Of Cables In The Distribution System: Parameters Calculation, Fault Analysis, And Configuration Optimization, Bin Sun
All Dissertations
Underground cables offer more advantages than overhead lines since cables are better protected and do not detract from the appearance of urban areas. In recent years, more and more electrical utilities are using cables to distribute electric power to their customers. However, the cost of installation and maintenance of underground cables is very expensive. Thus, the proper design and operation of distribution systems are crucial for economic reasons. To design and operate the distribution system properly, analysis of the underground cable system is extremely important. The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the underground cable distribution system under both …
A Numerical Method For The Navier Stokes Equations In A Velocity-Vorticity Form, Liang Zhao
A Numerical Method For The Navier Stokes Equations In A Velocity-Vorticity Form, Liang Zhao
All Dissertations
In physics, the Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) describe Newtonian fluid flows. Instead of focusing on the standard NSE with velocity and pressure as primary variables, we are interested in the Navier Stokes equations in a velocity-vorticity form (NSE-VV). In NSE-VV, vorticity is included in the system as an independent variable so that it can be computed directly. The main contribution of this thesis is proposing a numerical method for solving NSE-VV, which includes an efficient solver, an adaptive mesh refinement strategy and error analysis. A nested solver plays a fundamental role in the numerical method of NSE-VV. Similar to how it …

Edge-Computing Deep Learning-Based Computer Vision Systems, Edwin Lee Weill
All Dissertations
Computer vision has become ubiquitous in today's society, with applications ranging from medical imaging to visual diagnostics to aerial monitoring to self-driving vehicles and many more. Common to many of these applications are visual perception systems which consist of classification, localization, detection, and segmentation components, just to name a few. Recently, the development of deep neural networks (DNN) have led to great advancements in pushing state-of-the-art performance in each of these areas. Unlike traditional computer vision algorithms, DNNs have the ability to generalize features previously hand-crafted by engineers specific to the application; this assumption models the human visual system's ability …
Hydrothermal Crystal Growth Of Tetrahedral Framework Oxides For Optical Applications, Rylan James Terry
Hydrothermal Crystal Growth Of Tetrahedral Framework Oxides For Optical Applications, Rylan James Terry
All Dissertations
In our modern world, lasers are used every day, from the mundane task of playing a DVD to the innovative implementation of laser surgery. Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are crucial to laser technology for their ability to modify the frequency of a beam. The development of new NLO crystals is necessary for the advancement of laser technology, in order to reach wavelengths that are not currently accessible due to the limitations of current materials. Of particular importance to semiconductor photolithography, laser micromachining, and scientific instrumentation are the ultra-violet (UV, 200 nm > λ > 400 nm) and deep-UV (λ < 200 nm) portions of the optical spectrum. This dissertation delves into the synthesis of new potential NLO materials by means of hydrothermal crystal growth. In this study, tetrahedral oxides are utilized due to their likelihood of producing noncentrosymmetric (NCS) crystals, a necessity for NLO materials. Silicates are also employed in this study due to their particularly deep absorption edge into the UV. The addition of a spectroscopically silent rare earth ion which is capable of being doped with a lasing ion into a NCS crystal may lead to a single crystal that is both capable of lasing and frequency doubling. In the pursuit of such a crystal, the novel syntheses of Cs3YSi6O15 and LiRESiO4 (RE = Er, Tm, Yb, Lu) were established. Although these materials proved not to be NCS, their structures proved very intriguing and in the case of Cs3YSi6O15 is the parent structure to a family of structures that otherwise exhibits structural disorder or modulation. In expanding the range of mixed oxoanion species, the rare earth ion was replaced with a tetrahedral trivalent oxoanion. The appeal of a series with the general formula ABCO4, (A = alkali ion, B = trivalent metal, and C = tetravalent metal) is its prevalence to produce NCS crystals, notably having a tridymite-type framework. Tridymite is a high temperature variant of quartz that forms six-membered rings propagating through the structure, creating vacant channels. In a stuffed variation of this structural type, rings having negative charge are balanced by the “stuffing” of an alkali or alkaline earth cation into the vacant channels. While the archetype of the stuffed tridymites forms in the centrosymmetric (CS) space group setting of P63/mmc, there are four degrees of freedom that evolve as small variations in the structure are made, often leading to the removal of the inversion center. With the synthesis of a wide array of crystals in this family, those that were found to be NCS were analyzed for their potential use as NLO materials.

Preview; Bullock V. Fox: The Meaning Of The Term “Land Acquisition” In Mont. Code Ann. § 87–1–209(1), Jacob Rebo
Montana Law Review Online
This case presents the Court with two issues. The first is whether Petitioners (collectively “Gov. Bullock”), Governor Bullock, in his official capacity, and Martha Williams, in her official capacity as Director of the Fish, Wildlife, and Parks Department (“FWP”), have standing to bring suit against Respondent (“AG Fox”), Attorney General Fox, in his official capacity. The second issue before the Court is whether the term “land acquisition” in Mont. Code Ann. § 87–1–209(1) applies to non-possessory property interests.

High-risk alcohol use on college campuses is associated with several negative consequences for students. Social norms campaigns are a widely used intervention aimed at decreasing high-risk alcohol use in a university population but their efficacy can vary based on students’ peer groups and gender. Research on gendered drinking norms for college students tends to focus on men, as they are usually identified as more likely to drink alcohol overall and to drink in high-risk ways. Additionally, social norms campaigns implemented in a small group setting, which aim to correct misperceptions of students who may not initially identify with norms of …
Effects Of Lmx And External Environmental Factors On Creativity Among Faculty In Higher Education, Timothy Allen Dupont
Effects Of Lmx And External Environmental Factors On Creativity Among Faculty In Higher Education, Timothy Allen Dupont
All Dissertations
Recent articles in the news clearly indicate that changes are occurring in American higher education requiring universities to rely on faculty who can initiate change through creativity and innovation (Zhou & George, 2001). Creativity is generally defined as the generation of products or ideas that are both novel and appropriate (Hennessey & Amabile, 2010). Institutional theory, leader-member exchange theory (LMX), and the componential theory of creativity provide the theoretical framework for this study. This study explores the effects of faculty perceptions of external environmental pressures in higher education on faculty perceptions of their creativity. This study also examines: (a) the …

This study analyzed the ability of the Screen for Child Anxiety-Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED) to predict positive ASD screenings of the Social Responsiveness Scale (SRS). Parents and children ages 8 to 18 years (N = 100) were screened for anxiety using the SCARED and autism using the SRS. Moderate correlation was found between parent-reported SCARED and positive screening of the SRS (r = .579), with weak correlation found in the child-reported SCARED (r = .105). LASSO regression was conducted …
Student Perception Of The Effects Of Out Of School Suspension On Academic Motivation., Dawn Boone Roseberry
Student Perception Of The Effects Of Out Of School Suspension On Academic Motivation., Dawn Boone Roseberry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Historically, the response to rule violations and misbehavior in schools was to punish students by using methods such as exclusionary discipline. Exclusionary discipline may lead to poor academic outcomes for the student, increased likelihood of dropping out of school, and an introduction to the criminal justice system (Cueller and Markowitz, 2015). Being suspended from school also increases the chances a student will feel disconnected, intensify conflict with adults, and impact a youth’s choice to engage in criminal activities (Skiba et al., 2006). Researchers have concluded that suspension is also a predictor of future suspensions, not a deterrent (Rafaele & Mendez, …
Role Of Trkb-Signaling In Taste Development And Function., Jennifer Rios-Pilier
Role Of Trkb-Signaling In Taste Development And Function., Jennifer Rios-Pilier
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the geniculate ganglion, taste neurons likely differentiate into subtypes during development, but very little is known about how these neurons are defined molecularly or how they differentiate. Embryonically, geniculate neuron development is regulated by the growth factor, brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Postnatally, BDNF becomes restricted to subpopulations of taste receptor cells with specific functions, primarily sour responding. I hypothesized that during development, the receptor for BDNF, tropomyosin kinase B receptor (TrkB), also becomes restricted to a neuronal subset. I used transgenic mouse models to label and quantify both geniculate sensory neurons (Phox2b+), and those expressing TrkB (GFP) across …

The fraction of the population removed from the basic three levels associated with the standard model is less than 10% for all reasonable laser conditions, including …
Experimental And Computational Analysis Of The Interaction Of Carbon And Silicon Ablation Products In Expanding Hypersonic Flows, Brian E. Donegan
Experimental And Computational Analysis Of The Interaction Of Carbon And Silicon Ablation Products In Expanding Hypersonic Flows, Brian E. Donegan
Theses and Dissertations
Thermal protection is required for vehicles entering planetary atmospheres to protect against the severe heating loads experienced. Characterization of candidate materials is often done utilizing plasma or arc-jet facilities, which provide steady-state testing of the thermal environments experienced during hypersonic flight, but do not correctly simulate hypersonic flowfields. Conversely, impulse facilities can reproduce flight velocities and enthalpies but have extremely short test times, prohibiting testing of thermal response. Modeling ablation and heating rates, particularly in the wake region, remains a significant challenge due to the complexity of the flowfield. To better understand this complex phenomenon and provide data to validate …

Three Essays On Corruption And Collusion, Arlo Redwine
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies corruption and collusion with data derived from a laboratory experiment and household data. In Chapter 1 I study experimental procurement auctions with bribery and a public reserve to test for the tacitly collusive equilibrium described by Compte et al. (2005). Three sellers compete for 40 periods to sell a single item to a computerized buyer who accepts bribes and determines ties in bids and bribes randomly. In the closing periods, only 13.5% of auctions display the collusive equilibrium, but 58.7% of selling prices are noncompetitive. In comparison with simulated predictions for auctions that are corrupt but competitive, …

Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The narrow genetic pool of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) in North America can limit its future yield gains. Among the worldwide germplasm collection of 45,000 unique landraces, only 80 contribute 99% to the collective parentage of North American soybean cultivars. Among these 80 landraces, just 17 contribute to 86% of the collective parentage of the modern cultivars. The Soybean Nested Association Mapping population (SoyNAM) was therefore developed with the objective of diversifying the soybean gene pool. Forty diverse soybean genotypes from maturity groups (MG) 1 through 5 were crossed with a common MG 3 parent to develop 40 recombinant …

Visual Search Array Structure And Satisfaction Of Search Errors: Evidence From Eye Movements, Leah Gloskey
Visual Search Array Structure And Satisfaction Of Search Errors: Evidence From Eye Movements, Leah Gloskey
Psychology
Multiple-target visual searches are susceptible to errors when the recognition of one target hinders the detection of another. This phenomenon is known as "satisfaction of search" (SOS; Tuddenham, 1962) or more recently "subsequent search misses" (SSM; Cain, et al. 2013). Although this phenomenon was first identified in radiology, SSM errors extend beyond the medical domain. Exploring SSM errors in proofreading, this study examines whether the discovery of one misspelled word interferes with the detection of a second misspelled word amongst other correctly spelled words. Manipulating the display structure of task, it is hypothesized that the pattern of SSM errors may …

Termites have gained importance as major pests in cocoa agroforests. Proper identification of termite species and knowledge on their functional diversity are the first steps in developing environmentally compatible management strategies. We tested the hypothesis that patterns of termite species richness in different cocoa agroforests is related to responses by termite functional groups to changes in shade management. We compared termite assemblages under five cocoa agroforestry systems in Cameroon to assess the impact of shade on termite taxonomic and functional group diversity. Sampling was done using a modified standardized transect method. Two 30 × 30 m quadrates each divided into …

A Larger Table: Fostering Inclusion In Museums Through Hiring Directors Of Community Engagement, Hannah M. Page
Museum Studies Theses
Museums have undergone a transformation over the course of their existence, shifting from inwardly-focused private collections to organizations working to represent and advocate for the diversity of human existence. While professionals in the field have become increasingly aware of the importance of expanding beyond traditional audiences, there is little consensus about the best methods of achieving this goal. This thesis proposes one potential solution, the creation of a staff position dedicated to engaging members of the museum’s surrounding community through relationship-building. After a brief exploration of the history of the museum field, this paper delves into the benefits of developing …

Vehicle Sensor Data (Vsd) Based Traffic Control In Connected Automated Vehicle (Cav) Environment, Xianfeng Terry Yang, Zhao Zhang, Zhehao Zhang
TREC Final Reports
Connected automated vehicles (CAVs) are typically equipped with communication devices (e.g., dedicated short range communications (DSRC)) and on-board sensors (e.g., Radar, Lidar, Camera, etc.). Communication devices would enable the exchange of real-time information between vehicles and infrastructures via vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) channels. Sensors equipped in vehicles are providing various vehicle sensor data (VSD) such as the CAV’s GPS location, speed and moving direction (trajectory). Existing studies have shown the effectiveness of using CAV trajectories as input in many traffic control models.
However, it can be expected that CAVs and human-driven vehicles (HVs) will co-exist on the transportation network …
