A Role For Epac1 And Epac2 In Nociceptor Hyperexcitability And Chronic Pain After Spinal Cord Injury, Samantha Berkey Dec 2018

A Role For Epac1 And Epac2 In Nociceptor Hyperexcitability And Chronic Pain After Spinal Cord Injury, Samantha Berkey

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Chronic pain is a major complaint of those living with spinal cord injury (SCI), affecting 65-80% of the SCI population, but the treatment options remain limited or non-existent. The cAMP sensor EPAC has previously been shown to play a key role in chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain, though the contribution from each of its two main isoforms, EPAC1 and EPAC2, is unclear. Here I test the hypothesis that both EPAC1 and EPAC2 play a key role in the maintenance of persistent nociceptor hyperexcitability and chronic pain after SCI.

Using both a T9 SCI mouse model and a T10 SCI rat …

3d Scintillator Detector Quenching Characterization For Scanning Proton Beams, Fahed Alsanea Dec 2018

3d Scintillator Detector Quenching Characterization For Scanning Proton Beams, Fahed Alsanea

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Proton pencil beam scanning is becoming the standard treatment delivery technique for proton therapy centers. Scanned proton pencil beams provide a highly conformal dose distribution. The complex dose distribution poses challenges for quality assurance measurements leading to sophisticated detector setups and time consuming measurements. Fast 3D measurements are therefore desirable to verify the complex dose distribution and to enable the utilization of the full potential of proton therapy. The overall objective of this project is to improve volumetric scintillators detectors to provide 3D measurements for applications for beam commissioning, quality assurance program, and patient-specific treatment delivery verification.

Promoting Second Language Learning Through Oral Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication, Eric H. Young Dec 2018

Promoting Second Language Learning Through Oral Asynchronous Computer-Mediated Communication, Eric H. Young

Theses and Dissertations

Learning to speak a foreign language (L2) can be a challenging feat, made all the more challenging when done in only 50 minute, daily increments in class. Oral asynchronous computer-mediated communication (ACMC) provides learners with opportunities to practice spoken communication and evaluate their practice outside the classroom. In this dissertation, I explore methods for classroom integration of oral ACMC, linguistic traits developed in previous oral ACMC studies, methods for determining the effectiveness of oral ACMC, learner beliefs about the effectiveness of oral ACMC activities, and the effects of learners' deliberate practice in a series of oral ACMC activities on 3 …

A Flexible Service-Oriented Approach To Address Hydroinformatic Challenges In Large-Scale Hydrologic Predictions, Michael Antonio Souffront Alcantara Dec 2018

A Flexible Service-Oriented Approach To Address Hydroinformatic Challenges In Large-Scale Hydrologic Predictions, Michael Antonio Souffront Alcantara

Theses and Dissertations

Water security is defined as a combination of water for achieving our goals as a society, and an acceptable level of water-related risks. Hydrologic modeling can be used to predict streamflow and aid in the decision-making process with the goal of attaining water security. Developed countries usually have their own hydrologic models; however, developing countries often lack hydrologic models due to factors such as the maintenance, computational costs, and technical capacity needed to run models. A global streamflow prediction system (GSPS) would help decrease vulnerabilities in developing countries and fill gaps in areas where no local models exist by providing …

Decision Irrationalities Involving Deadly Risks, W. Kip Viscusi, Scott Deangelis Dec 2018

Decision Irrationalities Involving Deadly Risks, W. Kip Viscusi, Scott Deangelis

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This article provides an experimental analysis of two-armed bandit problems that have a different structure in which the first unsuccessful outcome leads to termination of the game. It differs from a conventional two-armed bandit problem in that there is no opportunity to alter behavior after an unsuccessful outcome. Introducing the risk of death into a sequential decision problem alters the structure of the problem. Even though play ends after an unsuccessful outcome, Bayesian learning after successful outcomes has a potential function in this class of two-armed bandit problems. Increasing uncertainty boosts the chance of long-term survival since ambiguous probabilities of …

The Effect Of Item Stem And Response Option Length On The Item Analysis Outcomes Of A Career And Technical Education Multiple Choice Assessment, Tina M. Koepf Dec 2018

The Effect Of Item Stem And Response Option Length On The Item Analysis Outcomes Of A Career And Technical Education Multiple Choice Assessment, Tina M. Koepf

Dissertations

Critical decisions in Career and Technical Education (CTE) can be based on assessment outcomes, requiring an essential focus on continuous improvement initiatives to provide increased multiple choice (MC) assessment validity. Previous research has determined that the presence of flawed test items negatively impacts student success; therefore, an MC taxonomy has been established and used in the assessment industry. While rigorous and successful Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs that enroll high-level academic students exist, many CTE programs enroll students with a wide spectrum of academic ability. Because many CTE students often have inferior reading skills, it is necessary to take …

The Emac Scheme For Navier-Stokes Simulations, And Application To Flow Past Bluff Bodies, Sergey Charnyi Dec 2018

The Emac Scheme For Navier-Stokes Simulations, And Application To Flow Past Bluff Bodies, Sergey Charnyi

All Dissertations

The Navier-Stokes equations model the evolution of water, oil, and air flow (air under 220 m.p.h.), and therefore the ability to solve them is important in a wide array of engineering design problems. However, analytic solution of these equations is generally not possible, except for a few trivial cases, and therefore numerical methods must be employed to obtain solutions. In the present dissertation we address several important issues in the area of computational fluid dynamics. The first issue is that in typical discretizations of the Navier-Stokes equations such as the mixed finite element method, the conservation of mass is enforced …

The Effect Of Composition On The Structure Symmetry And Stability Of Tunnel-Structured Hollandite Ceramics For Nuclear Waste Immobilization, Robert L. Grote

All Dissertations

The ceramic phase hollandite is a component material for some multi-phase ceramic waste forms and has been a prominent ceramic waste form for the immobilization of cesium and strontium radionuclides. The immobilization of cesium is difficult due to its large size and water solubility. This dissertation is focused on understanding the fundamental structure of hollandite and the effect cesium doping has on the properties of hollandite in order to develop a more effective and efficient waste form for cesium immobilization. The topics cover the structure and stability, thermodynamic properties and phase formation, irradiation resistance, and leaching resistance of hollandite. A …

Interfacing The Liquid Sampling- Atmospheric Pressure Glow Discharge Ion Source With Orbitrap Mass Spectrometers For High Accuracy High Precision Isotope Ratio Measurements Of Uranium, Edward Dexter Hoegg Dec 2018

Interfacing The Liquid Sampling- Atmospheric Pressure Glow Discharge Ion Source With Orbitrap Mass Spectrometers For High Accuracy High Precision Isotope Ratio Measurements Of Uranium, Edward Dexter Hoegg

All Dissertations

The integration of the liquid sampling – atmospheric pressure glow discharge (LS-APGD) with Orbitrap mass spectrometers has led to a potential paradigm shift in the field of high certainty isotope ratio measurements. Since the dawn of the atomic age, mass spectrometry has played a critical role in performing isotope ratio measurements of uranium (U), plutonium (Pu) and other radionuclides. Traditionally, these measurements have been made using thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) instruments and, more recently, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) instruments. While the ability of these instruments to perform isotope ratio measurements with a high degree of certainty has …

Carbon Fibers With Enhanced Mechanical Properties Derived From Lignin-Based Precursors, Jing Jin Dec 2018

Carbon Fibers With Enhanced Mechanical Properties Derived From Lignin-Based Precursors, Jing Jin

All Dissertations

Carbon fibers are known for their outstanding specific strength and modulus, and they have been commercially used in structural and lightweight composites. However, the main barriers to the large-scale commercial application of carbon fibers are the high cost of petroleum-based precursor polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and the environmental concerns associated with its conversion to carbon fibers. Toxic by-products such as hydrogen cyanide (HCN) are generated during the stabilization step of PAN-based carbon fibers. Other precursors being used today, carbonaceous pitch and rayon, either are too expensive or produce carbon fibers with low strength. Among bio-derived feedstocks, lignin is of increasing interest as …

Augmenting A Hazard Analysis Method With Error Propagation Information For Safety-Critical Systems, Fryad Khalid M. Rashid Dec 2018

Augmenting A Hazard Analysis Method With Error Propagation Information For Safety-Critical Systems, Fryad Khalid M. Rashid

All Dissertations

Safety-critical systems need specific activities in the software development life cycle to ensure that the system will operate safely. The objective of this dissertation is to develop a new safety analysis method to identify hazards. The method uses error propagation information and the internal structure rather than the interfaces of a system. We propose development procedures to augment STPA (System-Theoretic Process Analysis) with error propagation information derived from the architecture description of a system represented in the AADL (Architecture Analysis Design Language). We will focus on how the AADL error ontology can be used to assist in identifying errors, how …

The Effects Of Various Retort Motions On The Rate Of Heat Penetration Of A Food Simulant In Pouches, Mollye Macnaughton Dec 2018

The Effects Of Various Retort Motions On The Rate Of Heat Penetration Of A Food Simulant In Pouches, Mollye Macnaughton

All Dissertations

Processing foods in a retort is a reliable and established method of creating sterile and shelf stable products. The formula of the product and the package size dictates the processing time. Rotary retorts were invented to agitate cans to reduce the processing times and create uniform heating within the can. Recently, horizontal reciprocating agitation has become a feature of retorts referred to as Gentle Motion® and Shaka®. Oscillating agitation is an even newer possible retort motion. This research experiment was designed to (1) determine the effects of oscillating continuously and oscillating-dwell time on the rate of heat penetration in a …

High-Throughput Polygenic Biomarker Discovery Using Condition-Specific Gene Coexpression Networks, William Louis Poehlman Dec 2018

High-Throughput Polygenic Biomarker Discovery Using Condition-Specific Gene Coexpression Networks, William Louis Poehlman

All Dissertations

Biomarkers can be described as molecular signatures that are associated with a trait or disease. RNA expression data facilitates discovery of biomarkers underlying complex phenotypes because it can capture dynamic biochemical processes that are regulated in tissue-specific and time-specific manners. Gene Coexpression Network (GCN) analysis is a method that utilizes RNA expression data to identify binary gene relationships across experimental conditions. Using a novel GCN construction algorithm, Knowledge Independent Network Construction (KINC), I provide evidence for novel polygenic biomarkers in both plant and animal use cases.

Kidney cancer is comprised of several distinct subtypes that demonstrate unique histological and molecular …

Establishing Benchmark Criteria For Single Chromosome Bacterial Genome Assembly, Timothy J. Krause Dec 2018

Establishing Benchmark Criteria For Single Chromosome Bacterial Genome Assembly, Timothy J. Krause

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Adequate recommendations for the amount and types of sequencing data necessary to optimize the recovery of single chromosomes from bacterial sequencing projects do not exist. Broad estimates for coverage depths needed to recover complete bacterial genomes are present in the literature, but required sequencing depths across bacterial and archaeal phylogenies needed for high-quality assembly are not known. Additionally, correlations between genomic complexity and expected quality of assembly have not been properly defined. Furthermore, the capabilities of multiplexing (sequencing more than one sample simultaneously on one flow cell) with long-read sequencing platforms in order to recover complete bacterial chromosomes are poorly …

Policy Trilemma And Interest Rate Behaviour In Nigeria, Korede Ajogbeje, Oluwatosin Adeniyi, Festus O. Egwaikhide Dec 2018

Policy Trilemma And Interest Rate Behaviour In Nigeria, Korede Ajogbeje, Oluwatosin Adeniyi, Festus O. Egwaikhide

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

Policy makers face trade-off in dealing with exchange rate management, monetary independence and concerns about capital mobility simultaneously. This study empirically examines the effects of Nigeria’s trilemma policy path on interest rate using data spanning from 1997:Q1 to 2017:Q3. It equally incorporates the role of external reserves in buffering these effects. Stationarity of the series were ascertained with Zivot-Andrew (ZA) structural break unit roots test technique, while the bounds test cointegration approach was used to confirm the cointegrating properties of the variables. We found that capital mobility has significant effect on interest rate in the long run baseline model and …

A Predictive Model For Inflation In Nigeria, Nse S. Udoh, Anietie S. Isaiah Dec 2018

A Predictive Model For Inflation In Nigeria, Nse S. Udoh, Anietie S. Isaiah

CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)

The study estimates a dynamic model using quarterly data spanning 1995 to 2016. Four dynamic models: level lagged variables, differenced lagged variables, log-transformed lagged variables and differenced log-transformed lagged variables were considered. The best predictive model was selected based on the Schwarz Information Criterion (SIC) value. From the empirical results, the level form models performed better than the differenced form models. On the basis of model parsimony, the level lagged model was the preferred model among the set of selected models. Predictions obtained from the model indicate that the model is stable as actual interest rate (IR) values, fall well …

Multi-Label Classification Using Higher-Order Label Clusters, Dilanga Lakshitha Bandara Abeyrathna Galapita Mudiyanselage Dec 2018

Multi-Label Classification Using Higher-Order Label Clusters, Dilanga Lakshitha Bandara Abeyrathna Galapita Mudiyanselage

Student Work

Multi-label classification (MLC) is one of the major classification approaches in the context of data mining where each instance in the dataset is annotated with a set of labels. The nature of multiple labels associated with one instance often demands higher computational power compared to conventional single-label classification tasks. A multi-label classification is often simplified by decomposing the task into single-label classification which ignores correlations among labels. Incorporating label correlations into classification task can be hard since correlations may be missing, or may exist among a pair or a large subset of labels. In this study, a novel MLC approach …

Thirty Years Of Instrument Research: What Have We Learned And Where Are We Going?, Michael Howlett, Ishani Mukherjee, J.J. Woo

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Anyone interested in policy studies, policy analysis, policy evaluation and policymanagement should be aware of, and knowledgeable about, the origins, nature andcapabilities of different policy tools. They are a critical part of policy-making, providingthe ‘means’ by which to achieve policy ‘ends’ but also often becoming ends-inthemselves. Policy instruments are and have been the subject of inquiry in many policyrelated fields, including public administration and ‘governance’ studies, but also variousbroader disciplines such as political science and economics. Additionally, they have beena research topic in various policy-specific areas of study such as policy analysis andpolicy studies, as well as in sector-specific areas …

The Depravity Of The 1930s And The Modern Administrative State, Steven G. Calabresi, Gary Lawson Dec 2018

The Depravity Of The 1930s And The Modern Administrative State, Steven G. Calabresi, Gary Lawson

Faculty Scholarship

Gillian Metzger’s 2017 Harvard Law Review foreword, entitled 1930s Redux: The Administrative State Under Siege, is a paean to the modern administrative state, with its massive subdelegations of legislative and judicial power to so-called “expert” bureaucrats, who are layered well out of reach of electoral accountability yet do not have the constitutional status of Article III judges. We disagree with this celebration of technocratic government on just about every level, but this Article focuses on two relatively narrow points.

First, responding more to implicit assumptions that pervade modern discourse than specifically to Professor Metzger’s analysis, we challenge the normally unchallenged …

A "Bad Rap":R. V. Skeete And The Admissibility Of Rap Lyric Evidence, Ngozi Okidegbe Dec 2018

A "Bad Rap":R. V. Skeete And The Admissibility Of Rap Lyric Evidence, Ngozi Okidegbe

Faculty Scholarship

The use of accused-authored rap lyric evidence is no longer rare in Canadian criminal proceedings. Adduced by Crown prosecutors, rap lyrics written or co-written by an accused are increasingly used in criminal trials as evidence of the accused’s intent, knowledge, motive, identity, or confession to the commission of the specific offence charged. The practice is not without controversy. The introduction of an accused’s artistic work in the form of rap lyrics at trial engages trial fairness concerns. Without a keen awareness of the social and cultural context that produces rap music, trial actors risk inflating their probative value and underestimating …

Exponent: High Speed Cubesat Radio, Dana Sorensen Dec 2018

Exponent: High Speed Cubesat Radio, Dana Sorensen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Software Defined Radios (SDR) are limited by their usable bandwidth, which restricts how quickly they can transmit or receive data. The High Speed CubeSat Radio (HSCR) is capable of transmitting and receiving higher bandwidth signals by combining the bandwidths of several individual SDR transceivers. The HSCR performs phase correction to seamlessly stitch the bandwidths of each individual SDR into a single larger bandwidth.

By increasing the number of SDRs inside the HSCR, the bandwidth of the overall system will increase. This increase in bandwidth is limited only by the speed of the processing unit in working with received or transmitting …

Temperature And Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid’S Effect On Daphnia Magna Reproduction, Mark Albright Dec 2018

Temperature And Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid’S Effect On Daphnia Magna Reproduction, Mark Albright

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organisms adapt to their environments by adjusting their biochemistry and physiology; such adaptation is limited by resource availability and physiological constraints. The freshwater crustacean Daphnia magna inhabits a wide range of environments and must survive and reproduce within a range of temperatures. One limit to low-temperature adaptation is thought to be the availability of unsaturated fatty acids necessary to maintain proper fluidity of cellular membranes. D. magna maintained at 10 ºC on a diet poor in unsaturated fatty acids have been observed to produce clutches that fail to develop. However, this has not been observed on a diet rich in …
