Performance Assessment Of The Extended Gower Coefficient On Mixed Data With Varying Types Of Functional Data., Obed Koomson Dec 2018

Performance Assessment Of The Extended Gower Coefficient On Mixed Data With Varying Types Of Functional Data., Obed Koomson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Clustering is a widely used technique in data mining applications to source, manage, analyze and extract vital information from large amounts of data. Most clustering procedures are limited in their performance when it comes to data with mixed attributes. In recent times, mixed data have evolved to include directional and functional data. In this study, we will give an introduction to clustering with an eye towards the application of the extended Gower coefficient by Hendrickson (2014). We will conduct a simulation study to assess the performance of this coefficient on mixed data whose functional component has strictly-decreasing signal curves and …

Sickness And Contamination In The Yellow Wallpaper And Maggie: A Girl Of The Streets, Abigail Callahan Dec 2018

Sickness And Contamination In The Yellow Wallpaper And Maggie: A Girl Of The Streets, Abigail Callahan

Honors Theses

Sickness and Contamination in “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets” looks at feminism through the lens of nineteenth-century medical practices and how both Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Stephen Crane used them to argue against social standards for women. Most women during this time were seen as mentally ill or sick because they were in fact women. However, sexually active women were seen as even more sickly. Gilman in particular exposes sexism within the medical practice, and Crane builds on that by exposing sexism towards sexually active women through the idea of contamination. This paper refers to …

Framework For Lifecycle Enrichment Of Hpc Applications Towards Exascale Heterogeneous Architectures, Karan Sapra Dec 2018

Framework For Lifecycle Enrichment Of Hpc Applications Towards Exascale Heterogeneous Architectures, Karan Sapra

All Dissertations

With the advent of accelerators and architectures, researchers are faced with a daunting task to port their existing applications and algorithms to the optimal architecture and programming language. Porting existing applications or a new algorithm is both demanding and time-consuming due to the sheer number of accelerators and architectures plus the number of programming models available per architecture. This problem is further compounded for heterogeneous systems with wide availability of resources and complexity of scientific applications. In this dissertation, we focus on enriching the lifecycle of applications by providing an application to optimal architecture mapping and framework to assist in …

Occurrence And Pathogenicity Of Foliar Pathogens On Cucurbits In South Carolina With Special Emphasis On Stagonosporopsis And Stachybotriaceae On Watermelon', Gabriel Rennberger

All Dissertations

Fourteen cucurbit species of unknown susceptibility representing 12 genera were inoculated with Stagonosporopsis citrulli in Charleston, SC, in spring 2015, spring 2016 and fall 2016 to evaluate their level of susceptibility to gummy stem blight and the ability of the pathogen to reproduce on crown cankers. Coccinia grandis was highly resistant to gummy stem blight. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of susceptibility to gummy stem blight of 14 species, which expands the host range of S. citrulli to 37 species representing 21 genera in the family Cucurbitaceae. Crown cankers were found to be important …

Towards Automated Verification Of Object-Based Software With Reference Behavior, Yu-Shan Sun Dec 2018

Towards Automated Verification Of Object-Based Software With Reference Behavior, Yu-Shan Sun

All Dissertations

Automated verification is critical for ensuring that an implementation is correct and meets the specified behavior on every valid input. Verification should be modular to promote reuse and to scale up. However, for code that involves explicit reference behavior, there is the added complexity of reasoning that only the intended objects are being affected. This research focuses on simplifying automated verification and enabling modular verification using data abstractions that hide explicit reference behavior. While avoiding explicit reference behavior simplifies reasoning for a majority of software components, for capturing unavoidable reference behavior, such as that needed to implement classes of lower-level …

Spaceoar To Improve Dosimetric Outcomes For Monotherapy High-Dose-Rate Prostate Implantation In A Patient With Ulcerative Colitis., Michael Trager, Benjamin Greenberger, Amy S. Harrison, James Keller, Robert B. Den Dec 2018

Spaceoar To Improve Dosimetric Outcomes For Monotherapy High-Dose-Rate Prostate Implantation In A Patient With Ulcerative Colitis., Michael Trager, Benjamin Greenberger, Amy S. Harrison, James Keller, Robert B. Den

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

High-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy is an attractive option for patients receiving definitive radiation therapy for prostate cancer with decreased overall dose to the pelvis. However, ulcerative colitis increases rectal toxicity risk and may be a contraindication. A synthetic hydrogel, SpaceOAR (Augmentix Inc., Waltham, MA, USA), can facilitate the use of HDR brachytherapy for patients where rectal toxicity is a limiting factor. SpaceOAR gel (13.19 cc) was utilized in a monotherapy HDR prostate treatment with Ir-192 under transrectal ultrasound guidance, with the intention of decreasing rectal dose. SpaceOAR gel was inserted transperineally into the patient 18 days prior to the procedure. The …

The Public Health Lens: An Introduction To Population-Based Care In Athletic Training, Jenna L. Allocco

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

Historically, the athletic training profession has been focused on the individual; however, potential exists to drive large-scale prevention efforts in the athletic community with a population-based, public health approach. Relationship between the two professions has been acknowledged in in previous literature to do with educational competencies and opportunities for research, as well as in policy development involving sudden cardiac death, sport-related concussion and osteoarthritis prevention. Incorporating public health concepts such as the ecological model, health literacy, health behavior and evidence-based program planning and evaluation may improve athletic training health outcomes and prove beneficial to each respective discipline.

Ethical Cannabis Lawyering In California, Francis J. Mootz Iii Dec 2018

Ethical Cannabis Lawyering In California, Francis J. Mootz Iii

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

Cannabis has a long history in the United States. Originally, doctors and pharmacists used cannabis for a variety of purposes. After the Mexican Revolution led to widespread migration from Mexico to the United States, many Americans responded by associating this influx of foreigners with the use of cannabis, and thereby racializing and stigmatizing the drug. After the collapse of prohibition, the federal government repurposed its enormous enforcement bureaucracy to address the perceived problem of cannabis, despite the opposition of the American Medical Association to this new prohibition. Ultimately, both the states and the federal government classified cannabis as a dangerous …

Autonomy Isn't Everything: Some Cautionary Notes On Mccoy V. Louisiana, W. Bradley Wendel Dec 2018

Autonomy Isn't Everything: Some Cautionary Notes On Mccoy V. Louisiana, W. Bradley Wendel

St. Mary's Journal on Legal Malpractice & Ethics

The Supreme Court’s May 2018 decision in McCoy v. Louisiana has been hailed as a decisive statement of the priority of the value of a criminal defendant’s autonomy over the fairness and reliability interests that also inform both the Sixth Amendment and the ethical obligations of defense counsel. It also appears to be a victory for the vision of client-centered representation and the humanistic value of the inherent dignity of the accused. However, the decision is susceptible to being read too broadly in ways that harm certain categories of defendants. This paper offers a couple of cautionary notes, in response …

The Single Mitochondrion Of The Kinetoplastid Parasite Crithidia Fasciculata Is A Dynamic Network., John Dimaio, Gordon Ruthel, Joshua J. Cannon, Madeline F. Malfara, Megan L. Povelones

Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences & Biotechnology Faculty Papers

Mitochondria are central organelles in cellular metabolism. Their structure is highly dynamic, allowing them to adapt to different energy requirements, to be partitioned during cell division, and to maintain functionality. Mitochondrial dynamics, including membrane fusion and fission reactions, are well studied in yeast and mammals but it is not known if these processes are conserved throughout eukaryotic evolution. Kinetoplastid parasites are some of the earliest-diverging eukaryotes to retain a mitochondrion. Each cell has only a single mitochondrial organelle, making them an interesting model for the role of dynamics in controlling mitochondrial architecture. We have investigated the mitochondrial division cycle in …

Market Segmentation Vs. Subsidization: Clean Energy Credits And The Commerce Clause's Economic Wisdom, Felix Mormann Dec 2018

Market Segmentation Vs. Subsidization: Clean Energy Credits And The Commerce Clause's Economic Wisdom, Felix Mormann

Washington Law Review

The dormant Commerce Clause has long been a thorn in the side of state policymakers. The latest battleground for the clash between federal courts and state legislatures is energy policy. In the absence of a decisive federal policy response to climate change, nearly thirty states have created a new type of securities—clean energy credits—to promote low-carbon renewable and nuclear power. As more and more of these programs come under attack for alleged violations of the dormant Commerce Clause, this Article explores the constitutional constraints on clean energy credit policies. Careful analysis of recent and ongoing litigation reveals the need for …

To Withdraw Or Not To Withdraw: Reviewability Of An Agency's Withdrawn Proposed Rule, Jane E. Carmody Dec 2018

To Withdraw Or Not To Withdraw: Reviewability Of An Agency's Withdrawn Proposed Rule, Jane E. Carmody

Washington Law Review

Federal agencies propose thousands of regulations in any given year. The Administrative Procedure Act requires such agencies to follow certain procedures when enacting rules and regulations. However, when an agency proposes a new rule that is purely discretionary—not mandated by Congress—it may withdraw the proposed rule at any point before the rule is finalized. In October 2017, the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) withdrew a proposed rule that, if enacted, would have required long-term care facilities to recognize out of state same-sex marriages as a condition of Medicare and Medicaid participation. In its formal withdrawal published in the Federal …

Privacy's Double Standards, Scott Skinner-Thompson Dec 2018

Privacy's Double Standards, Scott Skinner-Thompson

Washington Law Review

Where the right to privacy exists, it should be available to all people. If not universally available, then privacy rights should be particularly accessible to marginalized individuals who are subject to greater surveillance and are less able to absorb the social costs of privacy violations. But in practice, there is evidence that people of privilege tend to fare better when they bring privacy tort claims than do non-privileged individuals. This disparity occurs despite doctrine suggesting that those who occupy prominent and public social positions are entitled to diminished privacy tort protections. This Article unearths disparate outcomes in public disclosure tort …

A Meticulous Food Safety Plan Today Avoids Handcuffs Tomorrow, Kim Bousquet Dec 2018

A Meticulous Food Safety Plan Today Avoids Handcuffs Tomorrow, Kim Bousquet

Journal of Food Law & Policy

In August 2010, thousands of people across the United States were poisoned by eating eggs unknowingly tainted with Salmonella enteritidis bacteria. Following a lengthy investigation, the owners of the facility where the outbreak began were sentenced to three months in prison. This is not a one-off case; poor food safety practices are responsible for several outbreaks and often end in incarceration. Filthy hen houses, diseased fruit storage, and negligent food processing may be the last thing we want to imagine, but these practices have much to teach today's food producers. This article first examines how poor food production practices can …

425 million people have diabetes worldwide, and by 2045 this number is estimated to increase to 629 million. The risk for cardiovascular diseases such as cardiomyopathy, hypertension, and atherosclerosis increase 5 and 2-fold for diabetic women and men respectively. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCMP) is a ventricular dysfunction that occurs in patients with diabetes independent of coronary artery disease, hypertension or valvular abnormalities. Hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia cause metabolic disturbances that adversely affect myocardial cells and extracellular matrix. These modifications alter overall myocardial structure and cardiac function, which can lead to heart failure.

As of now there is no specific marker for this …

Optimization Of Analytical Inverse Heat Transfer Recovery Solution, Nathan Schick Dec 2018

Optimization Of Analytical Inverse Heat Transfer Recovery Solution, Nathan Schick

Masters Theses

This thesis describes the different methods used when trying to solve inverse heat transfer problems, particularly those involving recovering heat flux. There are currently several techniques to measure the temperature history in an object subjected to heat transfer using various temperature sensors, however these types of sensors are gradually being replaced by Temperature Sensitive Paints (TSP), a technique that is more accurate and provides a better spatial resolution. TSP is a polymer that is applied on a base object. Changes in temperature in the polymer result in variations of the luminescence intensity in the paint. These variations can be captured …
