Calcitriol And Calcipotriol Modulate Transport Activity Of Abc Transporters And Exhibit Selective Cytotoxicity In Mrp1-Overexpressing Cells, Kee W. Tan, Angelina Sampson, Bremansu Osa-Andrews, Surtaj H. Iram

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Efflux transporters P-glycoprotein (P-gp/ABCB1), multidrug resistance protein 1 (MRP1/ABCC1), and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP/ABCG2) can affect the efficacy and toxicity of a wide variety of drugs and are implicated in multidrug resistance (MDR). Eight test compounds, recently identified from an intramolecular FRET-based high throughput screening, were characterized for their interaction with MRP1. We report that the active metabolite of vitamin D3, calcitriol, and its analog calcipotriol are selectively cytotoxic to MRP1-overexpressing cells, besides inhibiting transport function of P-gp, MRP1, and BCRP. Calcitriol and calcipotriol consistently displayed a potent inhibitory activity on MRP1-mediated doxorubicin and calcein efflux in MRP1-overexpressing H69AR …

H2 Oxidation Over Supported Au Nanoparticle Catalysts: Evidence For Heterolytic H2 Activation At The Metal-Support Interface, Todd N. Whittaker, K. B. Sravan Kumar, Christine Peterson, Meagan N. Pollock, L. C. Grabow, Bert D. Chandler

Chemistry Faculty Research

Water adsorbed at the metal-support interface (MSI) plays an important role in multiple reactions. Due to its importance in CO preferential oxidation (PrOx), we examined H2 oxidation kinetics in the presence of water over Au/TiO2 and Au/Al2O3 catalysts, reaching the following mechanistic conclusions: (i) O2 activation follows a similar mechanism to that proposed in CO oxidation catalysis; (ii) weakly adsorbed H2O is a strong reaction inhibitor; (iii) fast H2 activation occurs at the MSI, and (iv) H2 activation kinetics are inconsistent with traditional dissociative H2 chemisorption on metals. Density …

Gap Formation In Planetesimal Discs Via Divergently Migrating Planets, Sarah J. Morrison, Kaitlin M. Kratter Dec 2018

Gap Formation In Planetesimal Discs Via Divergently Migrating Planets, Sarah J. Morrison, Kaitlin M. Kratter

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

While many observed debris discs are thought to have gaps suggestive of the presence of planets, direct imaging surveys do not find many high-mass planets in these systems. We investigate if divergent migration is a viable mechanism for forming gaps in young debris discs with planets of low enough mass to currently elude detection. We perform numerical integrations of planet pairs embedded in planetesimal discs to assess the conditions for which divergent, planetesimal-driven migration occurs and gaps form within the disc. Gap widths and the migration rate of planets within a pair depend on both disc mass and the degree …

How Do Communication Modalities Influence Intergenerational Communication?, April Pierce, Candace Payne

Concordia Journal of Communication Research

This cross-sectional study analyzes the rapidly developing landscape of online communications. In particular, it studies the modalities used by three generations, which include baby boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y/millennials. In addition to analyzing their preferred methods, researchers also studied the conflicting views on other generations. This was done through data collected from an online survey administered via email and social media posts. It was hypothesized that the gaps in communication styles between different generations would be significantly different than the other generations mentioned. Researchers found that while generational differences are still present among the three demographics studied, a significant …

Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Overhauser-enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (OMRI) is a double resonance technique applied for oxygen imaging in aqueous samples and biological tissues. In this report, we present an improved OMRI approach of oxygen measurement using the single line “Finland” trityl spin probe. Compared to a traditional approach, we introduced an additional mechanism of leakage of spin polarization due to an interaction of a spin system with oxygen. The experimental comparison of the new approach with an oxygen-dependent leakage factor to a traditional approach performed in phantom samples in vitro, and mouse tumor model in vivo, shows improved accuracy of determination of oxygen …

Study Design: Systematic review.

Objectives: Past research has demonstrated increased speed and severity of progression for spinal epidural abscesses (SEAs) of the thoracic level, specifically, when compared with SEAs of other spinal cord levels. Untreated, this infection can result in permanent neurological sequelae with eventual progression to death if inadequately managed. Despite the seriousness of this disease, no articles have focused on the presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of SEAs of the thoracic level. For this reason, specific focus on SEAs of the thoracic level occurred when researchers designed and implemented the following systematic review.

Methods: A query of Ovid-Medline and …

Leading Questions: Prohibited In Court And Tutoring Sessions, Jared Gheen Dec 2018

Leading Questions: Prohibited In Court And Tutoring Sessions, Jared Gheen

Tutor's Column

Throughout the Writing Center, tutors often ask leading questions in order to foster a specific train of thought from their readers. Throughout this essay, I will discuss the harms of asking leading questions, using psychological experiments to illustrate my point. I will present several examples of questions that may surface in a tutoring session. I will explain ways to expand the original scope of the questions and prevent those questions from falling into the category of “leading questions.” Leading questions can severely alter a student’s interpretation or perspective on their writing, which limits learning, inhibits self-growth, and minimizes the effectiveness …

Inpatient Physical Therapy Management For A Patient With Chronic Pulmonary Complications Secondary To Multiple Lobectomies: A Case Report, Bayley Archinal Dec 2018

Inpatient Physical Therapy Management For A Patient With Chronic Pulmonary Complications Secondary To Multiple Lobectomies: A Case Report, Bayley Archinal

Case Report Papers

Background and Purpose: Bronchiectasis is a disease defined by abnormal dilation of the bronchi from recurrent infections and/or chronic inflammation, which can lead to irreversible lung damage. Based upon severity and patient response to conservative treatment, a lobectomy may be required to resolve their symptoms. Though surgery may provide symptom relief and improve overall quality of life, patients are likely to have long-term pulmonary complications. There are several studies regarding the treatment of patients with pulmonary limitations secondary to a lobectomy. However, there is little to no evidence regarding the long-term treatment of patients who have undergone multiple lobectomies. The …

Gender Essentialism And Responses To Candidates’ Messages, Meredith Meyer Dec 2018

Gender Essentialism And Responses To Candidates’ Messages, Meredith Meyer

Psychology Faculty Scholarship

People often form negative attitudes against those who deviate from gender norms. Within the political realm, this has the potential to translate into effects on perceptions of candidate likability and traits. Female candidates who tend to focus on issues stereotypically thought of as feminine are generally more positively evaluated than those who focus on stereotypically masculine domains. The current studies investigate whether these effects vary depending on the extent to which people endorse gender essentialism, which is the tendency to attribute gender differences to relatively more intrinsic, innate, and immutable factors versus believing that gender differences are largely due to …

A Content Analysis Of Visuals In Elementary School Textbooks, Daibao Guo, Katherine Landau Wright, Erin M. Mctigue

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although visual complexity is increasing and graphics are essential to support readers’ comprehension of disciplinary texts, visual literacy receives scant attention. Research suggests that effectively instructing students to interpret discipline-specific graphics would yield better comprehension. However, before this line of inquiry can be enacted, we must determine the characteristics of graphics in contemporary content textbooks. Therefore, this content analysis evaluated graphics within third- and fifth-grade science and social studies textbooks. We coded 3,844 graphics by type and function and compared findings between disciplines using chi-square and post hoc comparison tests. Overall, graphics were coded into 9 major types (photographs being …
