The Built Environment, Justin Gundlach, Jennier Klein Jan 2018

The Built Environment, Justin Gundlach, Jennier Klein

Sabin Center for Climate Change Law

The built environment, which includes not only buildings but infrastructure, mediates several important climate impacts on public health and is also subject to diverse legal requirements. It is a subject of particular focus for policy efforts aimed at promoting adaptive responses to climate change on the part of institutions and individuals. This chapter presents key examples of public health impacts that arise from climate change but are mediated – possibly mitigated, possibly exacerbated - by elements of the built environment. It also describes the process and substance of adaptive responses to those impacts. Having presented these physical and policy contexts …

Piece Of Cake, Brett Scharffs, Frank S. Ravitch Jan 2018

Piece Of Cake, Brett Scharffs, Frank S. Ravitch

Faculty Scholarship

A baker refuses to create a wedding cake for a same-sex couple because of his religious views on same-sex marriage. The couple claims the baker’s refusal violates state anti-discrimination laws. Their case, Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, now awaits a decision from the U.S. Supreme Court, which must wrestle with complicated questions about conflicting rights. We posed some of those questions to two religious liberty scholars: Frank S. Ravitch, Professor of Law and Walter H. Stowers Chair in Law and Religion at Michigan State University College of Law, and Brett G. Scharffs, Rex E. Lee Chair and …

Combating Russian Disinformation In Ukraine: Case Studies In A Market For Loyalties, Monroe E. Price, Adam P. Barry Jan 2018

Combating Russian Disinformation In Ukraine: Case Studies In A Market For Loyalties, Monroe E. Price, Adam P. Barry

Articles

The article examines how Ukraine has responded to Russian disinformation through two distinct projects: the Guidelines Project and the Words and Wars Project. These initiatives represent different approaches to combating disinformation, with the Guidelines Project emphasizing international norms and consensus-building, while the Words and Wars Project focuses on directly countering Russian tactics. The analysis highlights how the structure, stakeholders, and funding of these projects shape their recommendations and outcomes, underscoring the tension between national security and freedom of expression.

A Conversation About Facts, Stories, And Truth In Mediation, James Coben, Kenneth Fox, Lela P. Love Jan 2018

A Conversation About Facts, Stories, And Truth In Mediation, James Coben, Kenneth Fox, Lela P. Love

Articles

The article explores the role of facts, truth, and storytelling in mediation, highlighting a debate among scholars about whether mediators should focus on objective truth or prioritize parties' subjective experiences and narratives. The discussion emphasizes the tension between the legal system's pursuit of objective facts and mediation's goal of fostering understanding and collaboration. The authors argue that while brute facts (objective realities) matter, institutional facts (socially constructed meanings) are equally important in resolving conflicts. They suggest that mediators should act as active listeners, helping parties understand each other's perspectives rather than imposing their own truths.

Expeditious Green Synthesis Of Versatile Organic Compounds By Diverse Methods, Bimal K. Banik Jan 2018

Expeditious Green Synthesis Of Versatile Organic Compounds By Diverse Methods, Bimal K. Banik

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Chemistry)

Synthesis of organic compounds requires organic solvents and reagents to promote them. Very often, toxic solvents are used for this purpose. Many organic reactions require molar proportion of reactants and reagents to accomplish the goal. Some reactions require longer reaction times and produce products without control of stereochemistry. Therefore, development of facile and effective organic reactions under environmentally friendly conditions is necessary. In this perspective, several reactions are discussed that are performed by microwave-induced reactions, catalytic procedures, in the absence of any solvents, one-pot method and in water. Important reactions are chosen to investigate the feasibility of conducting these reactions …

Applying Preventive Measures Leading To Significant Reduction Of Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections In Adult Intensive Care Unit, Fahad M. Al-Hameed, Gulam R. Ahmed, Asim A. Alsaedi, Muhammad J. Bhutta, Faisal F. Al-Hameed, Majid M. Alshamrani

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To determine the impact of applying the best available clinical evidence on the preventive measures to reduce the rate of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) in adult intensive care units (ICU). Methods: Data were collected from adult ICUs (28 beds) from 2008 to 2016. The proper use of silicon catheter, aseptic insertion technique, emptying bag three-fourth via close circuit, the use of appropriate size catheter, securing the draining tube on the thigh to keep catheter bag below patient’s bladder level and removal of the catheter as early as possible were ensured in all patients. Results: Rate of UTI and …
