Social Control In Transnational Families: Somali Women And Dignity In Johannesburg, Marnie Shaffer Jan 2018

Social Control In Transnational Families: Somali Women And Dignity In Johannesburg, Marnie Shaffer

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Transnational mobility often separates families and distances individuals from the kinship and social structures by which they organized their lives prior to migration. Myriad forms of insecurity have been the impetus for Somali movement into the diaspora, with people fleeing the realities of conflict that have marked Somalia for decades while physically dividing families as individuals settle in different countries around the world. Mobility has altered the dynamics of households, families, and communities post-migration, reshaping social constructions as individuals move on without the familial support that sustained them in Somalia. While outcomes of these hardships are variable and often uneven …

Natural Resource Access Rights And Wrongs: Nontimber Forest Products Gathering In Urban Environments, Susan Charnley, Rebecca J. Mclain, Melissa R. Poe Jan 2018

Natural Resource Access Rights And Wrongs: Nontimber Forest Products Gathering In Urban Environments, Susan Charnley, Rebecca J. Mclain, Melissa R. Poe

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

This article uses research about non-timber forest products (NTFP) gathering in Seattle, Washington, USA to examine how people gain access to natural resources in urban environments. Our analysis focuses on gathering in three spaces: parks, yards, and public rights of way. We present a framework for conceptualizing access, and highlight cognitive mechanisms of access associated with foragers’ internal moral judgments about harvesting. Key findings are: (1) internal moral calculations about whether it is right or wrong to harvest a particular NTFP in a particular place are an important but previously unacknowledged mechanism governing resource access; and (2) these calculations may …

The Influence Of Buying Vs. Receiving An It-Based Device On User Commitment, Xiaofei Zhang, Joseph S. Valacich, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Xitong Guo

Faculty Publications

IT-based mobile devices (i.e., smart devices), especially those with health monitoring features, are popular gifts. However, little is known about a recipient’s commitment to using the smart device when it is obtained as a gift. To explore the influence of giftgiving on user perceptions and usage, three studies are reported. These studies build on the IT use literature, the gift-giving literature, and social exchange theory to investigate whether and how gift-giving leads to device commitment. Specifically, we found two contextual factor – receiving the smart device as a gift (versus buying for yourself) and providing emotional support when giving the …

A Longitudinal Analysis Of Shiftwork And Self-Reported Depression In A Police Cohort, Meghan Holst

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Shiftwork is associated with many chronic diseases stemming from the disruption of circadian rhythms. Police officers have a high risk for many adverse conditions including depression. Abnormal bodily functions, such as increased stress and disturbed sleeping patterns, may play an important role in the development and severity of depression. This study was designed to assess the association between depressive symptoms and shiftwork in a police cohort from Buffalo, NY

Methods: This longitudinal analysis consists of 470 police officers from the Buffalo Cardio-Metabolic Occupational Police Stress (BCOPS) study. Data were collected during visit 3 between 2004-2005 and visit …

Counseling Program Intervention For Improving African American Students’ Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Dual Enrollment Participation, Sonja L. Taylor Jan 2018

Counseling Program Intervention For Improving African American Students’ Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics Dual Enrollment Participation, Sonja L. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

African Americans are underrepresented at all points in the STEM pipeline from K-12 coursework into professional careers. The reasons for this underrepresentation are varied and reflect a myriad of contributing factors based on early academic experiences, sociocultural influences, and the effects of standardized testing. The three-fold purpose of this study was to implement a counseling program to inform nine African American study participants about the dual enrollment opportunity at their high school, to gain perspective about the factors which shaped their STEM disposition, and to determine the effect of the program on their attitudes about dual enrollment participation. The study …

Print On Demand: Stereotyping And Electrotyping In The United States Printing Trades And Publishing Industry, 1812-1860, Jeffrey Michael Makala Jan 2018

Print On Demand: Stereotyping And Electrotyping In The United States Printing Trades And Publishing Industry, 1812-1860, Jeffrey Michael Makala

Theses and Dissertations

Print on Demand explores the role and significance of stereotyping and electrotyping in the United States printing trades and publishing industry during the early nineteenth century. Stereotyping—the creation of solid printing plates cast from moveable type—fundamentally changed the ways in which books (and later, periodicals) were printed. The commissioning of plates altered shop practices, distribution methods, and the author/publisher relationship. Because of this new embodiment of capital and texts in the form of printing plates, a secondhand market for stereotyped works prolonged and complicated the production and distribution of material texts. The primary focus of this study is the ways …

Garagecraft: Tinkering In The American Garage, Katherine Erica Mcfadden Jan 2018

Garagecraft: Tinkering In The American Garage, Katherine Erica Mcfadden

Theses and Dissertations

The American garage, whether in the home or larger, communal ventures, has been a site of technological crafting for a variety of people across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The garage has been a space in which to both reaffirm the status quo of masculinity, and to discover feminist modes of self sufficiency. It has provided a place to play, experiment, commercialize technology, while also providing a space to create new identities and communal standards. What we make and how we make it is, in the end, more about crafting ourselves than crafting objects.

From Worldviews To Classrooms: Framing Evolution Acceptance In Pre-Service Science Teachers In The Southeastern United States, Amanda Glaze Jan 2018

From Worldviews To Classrooms: Framing Evolution Acceptance In Pre-Service Science Teachers In The Southeastern United States, Amanda Glaze

Georgia Educational Researcher

Research demonstrates that teachers' acceptance or rejection of evolution impacts whether they teach evolution in their classrooms. Furthermore, factors such as religiosity and nature of science understanding impact acceptance or rejection. What is absent from the literature is an exploration of experiences that inform choices made regarding acceptance or rejection, experiences that illuminate the counter-intuitive relationships demonstrated in quantitative studies. For this reason, we explore the lived experiences that inform the worldviews of Pre-Service Secondary Science Teachers (PSSTs) and how those worldviews might inform their acceptance or rejection of evolution. Coding and pattern analysis informed themes within the data explaining …

Black Men, Red Coats: The Carolina Corps, Race, And Society In The Revolutionary British Atlantic, Gary Sellick Jan 2018

Black Men, Red Coats: The Carolina Corps, Race, And Society In The Revolutionary British Atlantic, Gary Sellick

Theses and Dissertations

The Carolina Corps were both a product and driver of British military zeal during the Age of Revolution. Created in South Carolina in the final years of the American Revolutionary War, the unit was the only black fighting force that survived the conflict on the British side. Evacuated at the end of the conflict as free men, the Carolina Corps straddled the boundaries of military–civil society in the highly racialized eighteenth century British Caribbean. Although former slaves, the men of the Corps were nonetheless crucial to the defense of the region. This gave the men opportunities and legal standing that …

“Poetry Doesn’T Restore Ecosystems”: Garbage And Poetry In The Anthropocene, Joseph Russell Hendryx Jan 2018

“Poetry Doesn’T Restore Ecosystems”: Garbage And Poetry In The Anthropocene, Joseph Russell Hendryx

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the representation of material garbage in American poetry, from the development of industrial waste management in the late nineteenth century to the present day ecological crises. In the early to mid-twentieth century, garbage serves as a new Romantic nature, allowing poems’ speakers to reflect on themselves and their society through this trashed landscape. The presence of the material garbage itself, however, was never a central concern and continued to be hidden behind its various metaphorical utilizations. A.R. Ammons’s poem Garbage opened up the poetic conversation by searching for a more nuanced and worldly treatment of garbage. The …

The Walking Debt: Surviving An Outbreak Of Predatory Lending, Arya Novinbakht Jan 2018

The Walking Debt: Surviving An Outbreak Of Predatory Lending, Arya Novinbakht

Theses and Dissertations

The Walking Debt provides first-hand accounts of predatory finance and financial literacy. This thesis displays how low- and middle-income earners afford their cost of living in times of stagnant wages and rising costs, through face-to-face interviews with payday loan recipients. Payday loans are short-term, high interest loans whose clients typically “rollover” to afford the cost of credit and their cost of living. Although these loans are not new, they came to thrive following a series of neoliberal reforms beginning in the 1970s that ultimately undermined the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) of 1977. Due to the nature of neoliberalism, responsibility for …

Analyzing And Comparing Selected Works For Violin And Piano By Chen Gang, Chen Guoquan And Bright Sheng, Liangjun Zou

Theses and Dissertations

Cross-cultural musical synthesis plays an important role in the creation of musical progress in the twentieth century. This dissertation is a study on the development of the use of Chinese folk elements in Western-style compositions by Chinese composers. Through analyses of different compositions by traditional Chinese composers, Chen Gang and Chen GuoQuan, as well as Chinese-born American composer Bright Sheng, the aesthetic variations produced by the synthesis of Western and Eastern music is examined.

Chapter One focuses on the development of Chinese violin music promoted by the efforts of several generations of composers. Chapter Two presents the background information of …

A Qualitative Exploration Of Experiences And Motivations For Diabetes Self-Management In African American Men Between The Ages Of 40-85 With Type 2 Diabetes, Anthony Q. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Diabetes is a devastating disease that can affect an individual’s health and quality of life, but if managed properly, individuals with diabetes can have a good quality of life. Diabetes strikes African American men at a high rate. This study used a qualitative design to explore African American men between the ages of 40-85 with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and their definition of diabetes and motivation, their experience of living with diabetes, their self-management behaviors, their motivations for managing diabetes, and what they and healthcare providers believe motivates them to self-manage diabetes and to attend diabetes self-management education (DSME) programs. …

The Influence Of Instructional Design Decisions On Student Motivation In Online Courses, Robin E. Youger Jan 2018

The Influence Of Instructional Design Decisions On Student Motivation In Online Courses, Robin E. Youger

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The goal of higher education is to educate, train, and motivate people (Hunt, 1998). Typically, best practices and accepted design strategies are used to develop online courses that fulfill the needs of the university, faculty, and student stakeholders. This study examines two methods of instructional design -- the Quality Matters (QM) process, and Keller's ARCS motivational design process -- to understand if instructional design decisions have influence on student motivation in online courses. Quality Matters (QM) offers a well-researched process of designing online courses based on nationally-recognized standards. The QM format provides an ideal objectives-based course design; however, it does …

Phenomenology And Geographic Information Science: Experiencing Landscape Through Geospatial Technologies And Higuchi-Style Indices, L. Jesse Rouse Jan 2018

Phenomenology And Geographic Information Science: Experiencing Landscape Through Geospatial Technologies And Higuchi-Style Indices, L. Jesse Rouse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Research conducted on cultural landscapes is often divided into two approaches comprising a qualitative description or quantitative measure. The separation is often driven by the difference in the approach and methods utilized. Phenomenology has often been used as the framework with which to consider the experience and quality of a landscape. The descriptive and personal nature of phenomenology seeks to separate the observer from their personal biases to yield a qualitative narrative. Conversely, Geographic Information Science (GIScience) is seen as a set of methods and tools to capture, map, and analyze the quantifiable features of a landscape. However, it is …

To Participate Or Not To Participate In Education Research: A View From The Teacher’S Perspective, Jennifer Gans Jan 2018

To Participate Or Not To Participate In Education Research: A View From The Teacher’S Perspective, Jennifer Gans

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation was designed to identify factors that might explain teacher resistance versus teacher support for participation in education research. To that end, predictor variables suggested by both diffusion of innovations theory, as well as personality trait theories were examined as unique predictors of variability in attitudes toward adoption of participation in the research process. Furthermore, “exposure to research” was examined as another possible variable that may be uniquely associated with willingness to participate in research, beyond the other theoretically motivated variables. The researcher developed a survey instrument featuring four research vignettes that increased in demands for teacher participation. Each …

A Study Of Factors Contributing To Acculturation Stress For International Graduate Students In A Small Non-Profit Graduate School, Nkenge Friday

Theses and Dissertations

The increase of international students studying in universities and colleges in the United States has led to the need for additional programming and resources on campuses that support the transitioning needs related to campus and community culture. Given the diverse cultural needs of international students and the metropolitan culture of Washington, DC, acculturation stress can be a common occurrence while attending the intensive graduate program.

In this study, international students attending a small graduate school in Washington, DC were interviewed while resources provided for transitioning and ongoing support for the students were examined. Factors related to areas of programming and …

Rethinking The Boundaries Of “Criminal Justice", Benjamin Levin Jan 2018

Rethinking The Boundaries Of “Criminal Justice", Benjamin Levin

Scholarship@WashULaw

This review of The New Criminal Justice Thinking (Sharon Dolovich & Alexandra Natapoff, eds.) tracks the shifting and uncertain contours of “criminal justice” as an object of study and critique. Specifically, I trace two themes in the book: (1) the uncertain boundaries of the “criminal justice system” as a web of laws, actors, and institutions; and (2) the uncertain boundaries of “criminal justice thinking” as a universe of interdisciplinary scholarship, policy discourse, and public engagement. I argue that these two themes speak to critically important questions about the nature of criminal justice scholarship and reform efforts. Without a firm understanding …

Transformasi Wereng Batang Cokelat Dari 'Hama Tidak Penting' Menjadi 'Hama Elite" Pada Ekosistem Padi Sawah Di Pulau Jawa: Sebuah Pembahasan Etnografi Multispesies, Rhino Ariefiansyah

Antropologi Indonesia

This paper aims to situate the transformation Brown Plant-Hopper (BPH) in broader issues of wetland rice socio-agroecosystem management in Java. By considering multispecies ethnography, this paper argues that the transformations of BPH from "unimportant insects" into "elite dangerous pests" is a consequence of the complexity of the interplay between biological processes and social processes in the context of managing biotic and abiotic elements in rice farming ecosystem. In this context, wetland rice ecosystems (sawah) is a unique social and biological space where multi-species actors interact with one another, directly or indirectly. Thus, the transformation of BPH insects is the result …

Bahasa Indonesia Dalam Konteks: Lingua Franca Di Pasar Barter Oleh Orang Puor Dan Lamalera Di Lembata, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Dea Rifia Bella

Antropologi Indonesia

This article focuses on language practices of Puor and Lamalera people in Lembata Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia whenever they interact with each other in barter market. Both of them have different linguistic forms of vocabularies and dialects. Even though they have different languages, interestingly, they do not use Indonesian language as a lingua franca; they prefer to use their local languages in barter market. The limitation of their linguistic competence in Indonesian language as well as their perception of Indonesian language as a formal language, justifies their preference to local languages. They do not use Indonesian as their lingua …

Intersubjektivitas Dan Gaya Kamera Dalam Film Etnografi, Aryo Danusiri Jan 2018

Intersubjektivitas Dan Gaya Kamera Dalam Film Etnografi, Aryo Danusiri

Antropologi Indonesia

This article is about the use of observational camera style in articulating intersubjectivity. The case is my experience in making Lukas' Moment (2005), an ethnographic film shot in Merauke, Papua. The film is about Papuans’ intersubjectivity toward indigeneity in the post-2000 riot Papua. I observed the experiences of three Papuan entrepreneurs in processes of building their enterprises which in different ways involve politics of indigeneity. Following the existential-phenomenological anthropology approach, I explicate intersubjectivity as instable formation of subjects engaging in their process of being-in-the-world. In the filming process, I experienced two modalities of observational camera, which I called hunting and …

You Shall Not Enter The List: Inscriptional Practices And The Politics Of Deservingness In Indonesia, Hestu Prahara Jan 2018

You Shall Not Enter The List: Inscriptional Practices And The Politics Of Deservingness In Indonesia, Hestu Prahara

Antropologi Indonesia

Indonesia’s first state-led community-driven development (CDD) began in 1990s with influential support by the World Bank. This paradigm sees the community not merely as an object but rather as an active subject of development. To ensure the shift at the paradigmatic level, a social engineering process known as community empowerment project was designed using monitoring instruments to guarantee inclusive development planning, prevent elite capture, and promote internal audit capacities. In this process, extensive use of bureaucratic instruments, e.g. paperwork, assessment forms, official stamps, program proposals/reports, and financial reports facilitated the formation of community participation. How did the use of documents …

Kronotop Kontra Politik Dan Visualitas Korban Dalam Film Dokumenter: Kajian Antropologi Media, Aryo Danusiri Jan 2018

Kronotop Kontra Politik Dan Visualitas Korban Dalam Film Dokumenter: Kajian Antropologi Media, Aryo Danusiri

Antropologi Indonesia

This article is my retrospective account on the making of one of my testimonial documentaries, “Kameng Gampoeng Nyang Keunong Geulawa” (The Village Goat that Takes the Beating, 1999) which was commissioned by a human rights-defender NGO based in Jakarta. The aim was to offer critical views on the Aceh conflict to the Indonesian public. By using chronotopes (Bakhtin, 1981) as the analytical tool, I delineate the way the Indonesian state and its military constituted a dominant view of Aceh as the Other by applying a semiotic model of authoritarian nationalism that circulated in the public sphere. As the counter-politics, I …

Kekerabatan Sebagai Pranata Sosial Yang Mempengaruhi Agency Perlawanan Masyarakat: Studi Kasus Protes Petani Terhadap Proyek Pembangunan Irigasi Di Sumatra Barat, Popy Dwi Patrojani, Suraya Afiff

Antropologi Indonesia

Studies have shown the importance of identity politics in the ability for small-holders to form a solidarity in a collective action protest against development project. However, those studies do not show how the kinship relations in the context of adat system could shape the agency of small-holder to organize collective resistance against the development project that affects their livelihoods. Although we are not denying the importance of traditional kinship relations in developing solidarity among agrarian communities in Indonesia to carry out a public protest, kinship relations system might also be used by other interest such as government, contractor, and traditional …
