Theology, Phenomenology, And The Divine In King Lear, Kent R. Lehnhof
Theology, Phenomenology, And The Divine In King Lear, Kent R. Lehnhof
English Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"In what follows, then, I would like to think through Levinas's ideas on transcendence and ethics in such a way as to map out a new pathway for approaching Shakespeare's great tragedy. As unorthodox as it may sound, I propose to shed light on the darkling religiosity of King Lear by turning-not to the theological doctrines of early modem Christians-but to the postmodern ethics of a twentieth-century Jew."
Masculinity And Men’S Bodies In Fairy Tales: Youth, Violence, And Transformation, Jeana Jorgensen
Masculinity And Men’S Bodies In Fairy Tales: Youth, Violence, And Transformation, Jeana Jorgensen
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The study of masculinity in fairy tales lags behind the study of femininity, a lack this article addresses by reviewing the intersections of masculinity studies and feminist theory and using a dataset based on canonical fairy-tale collections to empirically tease out representations of men's bodies in fairy tales. Crucial findings include the significance of youth, physical stature, violence, and transformations in depictions of men's bodies in fairy tales, which contribute to a construction of hegemonic masculinity as fragile yet the unmarked norm.

Fear Of Change: Autonomous Vehicle Technology And The Automobile As A Cultural Artifact, Alexis Shoemaker
Fear Of Change: Autonomous Vehicle Technology And The Automobile As A Cultural Artifact, Alexis Shoemaker
Scripps Senior Theses
The automobile is a cultural artifact embedded in our lives and imbued with meaning. Autonomous vehicle technology stands to alter not just the way we drive or whether we drive, it also has the power to fundamentally change the way we live. The development of driverless cars enables the examination of the complex relationships that individuals have with the automobile and reveals the fears associated with this technological change.

Demarginalizing The Intersection Of Spirituality And Law: Oppositional Cultural Practice™ Theory, Self-Transcendence, And Social Change, Kim E. Clark
Western New England Law Review
This Article works toward a theory of self-transcendence that leads to social change. The Maslow self-transcendence hypothesis is reformulated. The old hypothesis, when applied to self-transcendence in humans, has two major problems: (1) it posits an erasure of the Self that was motivated to achieve the self-actualization state, i.e., the self-transcendence process causes erasure of the self-actualized Self as the individual moves toward gratifying self-transcendence motivational needs (ego-less, seeking communion with the transcendent, service to others, acting in more collectivist ways, coming to identify with something greater than the purely individual self); and (2) it does not adequately explain when …

The Chronicle of Higher Education Review (2/11/05) published an article on “Collaborative Efforts: Promoting Interdisciplinary Scholars” by Stephanie L. Pfirman, James P. Collins, Susan Lowes, and Anthony F. Michaels. They wrote, “Creative research and teaching increasingly occur at the junction between traditional disciplines. As a result, many colleges and universities have committed themselves to fostering interdisciplinary scholarship. But the scholars who work at that junction are confronted with conventional departmental hiring, review, and tenure procedures that are not suited to interdisciplinary work and can slow or block the progress of their careers.”

Conservative Colonization: An Ethical Analysis Of Galactic Expansion, Parker Vesely
UReCA: The NCHC Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity
Space: the final frontier. Humanity has long held a fond appreciation for this vast unknown, and it has been featured in both art and academia since the dawn of time. Scientific knowledge of both the Earth and the solar system have greatly advanced in the last seventy years since humanity launched its first object, a German V-2 rocket, into the atmosphere. This obsessive curiosity did not cease with the Lunar Landing, but instead increased ten-fold with dreams of extraterrestrial life and extraterrestrial living. As the day humans will set foot on Mars steadily approaches, humankind faces a daunting dilemma: how …

Description Of Phyllium (Phyllium) Conlei, New Species, And A First Look At The Phylliidae (Phasmatodea) Of The Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia, Royce T. Cumming, Pablo Valero Riquelme, Sierra N. Teemsma
Insecta Mundi
The Phylliidae (Phasmatodea) diversity of the Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia is preliminarily examined, and revealed to be notably lacking in completeness with only two species currently recorded. Of the nine islands/ island groups within the Lesser Sunda Islands, only the westerly islands (Bali and Lombok) have single species recorded: Phyllium (Pulchriphyllium) pulchrifolium Audinet-Serville, 1838, from Bali, and Phyllium (Phyllium) conlei Cumming, Valero, and Teemsma, new species, from Lombok. The latter species is herein described and differentiated from congenerics. To conclude, with so few species recorded from the Lesser Sunda Islands, a key to species for Java and the Lesser …

Honors In Chile: New Engagements In The Higher Education System, Juan Carlos Skewes, Carlos Alberto Cioce Sampaio, Frederick J. Conway
Honors in Practice Online Archive
Honors programs are rare in Latin America, and in Chile they were unknown before 2003. At the Universidad Austral de Chile, an interdisciplinary group of scholars linked to environmental studies put forward a pilot project for implementing a new experience in higher education. Challenged by an educational environment where (i) apathy and mediocrity have taken over the classrooms, (ii) monodisciplinary training rules the university campus, and (iii) authoritarian teaching persists, this has been an experiment in new ways of approaching the classroom. Stimulated by experiences in the USA, a project proposal was written, finding support in the Chilean Ministry of …

Men's Violence Against Women: A Comparative Review Of Which Programs Work Best, Yeliani R. Valdez
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
One in four women have been a victims of Domestic Violence (DV) in their lifetime by an intimate partner. Men's violence against women is a public health issue that continues to persist today. Much of the larger conversations remains in finding the best solutions and allocating resources in order to reduce men's violence against women. Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome: An Analysis Of Cross-Cultural Research, Historical Research, And Patient Narratives Of The Diagnostic Experience, Megan Halstead
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
While Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a disorder that has been studied since the mid-1800s, it is still considered to be one of the most common chronic illnesses that no one has ever heard of. The etiology of POTS is well described in modem medical literature, but the disorder continues to be misdiagnosed or overlooked entirely in patients. By reviewing historical literature, patient narratives, and cross-cultural medical literature on POTS through the context of the disease vs illness model developed by medical anthropologists, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of POTS to facilitate more positive outcomes in …
The Art Of Morals: A Study Of The Influence Of Musicopoetic Arts On Moral Development In Plato's Laws, Daniele Manni
The Art Of Morals: A Study Of The Influence Of Musicopoetic Arts On Moral Development In Plato's Laws, Daniele Manni
Dissertations
This dissertation's primary goal is to give a detailed account of the employment of musicopoetic arts in the process of moral development in Plato's Laws. Its secondary objective is to propose an explanation for the different evaluations of musicopoetic arts at the end of the Republic and in the Laws.
To achieve the first goal I analyze the elements of the soul involved in the moral psychology of the Laws, as sketched in the famous image of the marionette; I maintain that the process of habit formation is the pivotal aspect of this moral psychology; I indicate that Plato restricts …

The Resource Page- 148, Raymond J. Mckoski
Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association
The ABA Model Code of Judicial Conduct fairly well defines ethical conduct while on the bench. This heavily footnoted book by retired Judge Raymond McKoski explores judicial ethics issues in a myriad of less clear off-the-bench activities. Some examples: Is it permissible for a judge to be the concession stand cashier at her child’s basketball game? (pages 178-179, fns. 654-667). Does it violate the Code to meet with three Rotary Club members in chambers to discuss where to hold the Club’s meetings next year? (page 70, footnotes 127-129). What is the important difference between using a courthouse phone to ask …

Toward Learning And Justice, Through Love, Isis Artze-Vega
Toward Learning And Justice, Through Love, Isis Artze-Vega
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
This chapter responds to the call for educational developers to isolate the one perspective that guides our work. It retraces the author’s career steps, seeking the origin of love as a guiding principle, and describes its evolution and application during her career. To do so, the piece includes a theoretical perspective on love and argues that its utility as a characterizing perspective for our profession stems from its significance to learning and justice. It suggests the timeliness and urgency of elevating the role of love in our field, notes associated risks and rewards, and suggests resources for doing so.
Seeking And Doing Justice Through Educational Development, Wayne Jacobson
Seeking And Doing Justice Through Educational Development, Wayne Jacobson
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
One thing that has shaped my understanding of educational development more than anything else is a commitment to seeking and doing justice. I see this commitment as the animating force that breathes life into the best of what educational developers do and the core value that continually challenges us to do better. In the many contexts in which we work, the one thing that defines the role of educational development is the recognition that we need to continually examine and improve how well our institutional systems are doing justice to the communities that we are trusting them to serve.

“Once A Scientist…”: Disciplinary Approaches And Intellectual Dexterity In Educational Development, Katherine Kearns, Molly Hatcher, Mara Bollard, Michele Dipietro, Devon Donohue-Bergeler, Leslie E. Drane, Elizabeth Luoma, Andrew E. Phuong, Laura Thain, Mary C. Wright
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The authors claim that disciplinary epistemologies—disciplinary habits of mind and ways of thinking—offer productive lenses for observing teaching practices. Furthermore, they argue that educational developers who draw from multiple epistemologies in combination provide rich evidence with regard to teaching and learning and can speak to academic colleagues from an array of disciplines. Clarity is provided for career paths in educational development for colleagues from academic disciplines who are contemplating part- or full-time work in a teaching center. The authors hope that this opening collection develops into a toolkit and area of inquiry about disciplinary approaches to the practice of educational …
Balancing Direction And Response: Four Dimensions Of Transformative Facilitation In Educational Development, Roben Torosyan, Alison Cook-Sather
Balancing Direction And Response: Four Dimensions Of Transformative Facilitation In Educational Development, Roben Torosyan, Alison Cook-Sather
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
In this article we present 4 dimensions of transformative facilitation, each conceptualized using the “wisdom of practice” (Weimer, 2006, p. 54) gathered through our experience facilitating educational development and through the experiences posted by participants in a POD Network conference session. Composed of theoretical underpinnings we drew from several bodies of literature and practical applications generated by us and participants during the session, these dimensions include: (a) liminality (context); (b) organization (structures); (c) attitudinal stance (tone); and (d) process. Through their multidirectional interactions with one another, these dimensions aim to transform facilitation as enacted across educational development contexts.
Transforming The Classroom At Traditionally White Institutions To Make Black Lives Matter, Frank Truitt, Chayla Haynes, Saran Stewart
Transforming The Classroom At Traditionally White Institutions To Make Black Lives Matter, Frank Truitt, Chayla Haynes, Saran Stewart
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
In recent years, many college campuses across the United States witnessed a significant increase in campus activism regarding the range of experiences and conditions facing racially minoritized communities in higher education. As critical and inclusive pedagogues and scholars, we embrace the belief that a focus on making Black Lives Matter in the classrooms of traditionally White institutions (TWIs) provides educators with the best chance to improve the educational outcomes of all students. In this essay, we examine seven principles of critical and inclusive pedagogies that have the potential to make Black Lives Matter in TWI classrooms and identify several implications …

Workshopping A Workshop: Collaborative Design In Educational Development, Eleanor V. H. Vandegrift, Amy B. Mulnix, Jennifer R. Yates, S. Raj Chaudhury
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
Working remotely and collaboratively, our interdisciplinary team created an educational development workshop, Thinking Skills for the 21st Century: Teaching for Transfer, in which participants not only experience, apply, and reflect on teaching across educational settings but also connect this work to principles that have been demonstrated by learning science to support the transfer of knowledge. We used backward design to develop the workshop and evidence-based pedagogies in its implementation. We facilitated the workshop at two different national meetings for distinct audiences and also as part of an on-campus faculty development program. Here, we report on the workshop development and revision, …

Disordering Mathematical Identity Stories Through Dramatic Filmed Parody ‘Math Therapy’, Kelly Pickard-Smith
Disordering Mathematical Identity Stories Through Dramatic Filmed Parody ‘Math Therapy’, Kelly Pickard-Smith
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The stereotypical mathematical identity story of the ‘mad mathematician’ (consumed by mathematics and socially inept) is widely reported as problematic to understanding what it means to be mathematical, and to engaging students in mathematics. This problem is explored in the improvisational parody ‘Math Therapy’, which occurred during my filming of ‘Performatics’(https://vimeo.com/147449932); an Arts Based Research (ABR), using filmed-drama. ‘Performed’ and informed by the lived experiences of three post graduate students studying courses with mathematical content, their mathematical experiences are juxtaposed with those of a socially imagined ‘mad mathematician’ in a fictional, generic therapy context entitled ‘Math Therapy’. The ABR facilitated …
