Gender And Religion In A Shifting Social Landscape: Anglo-Saxon Mortuary Practices, Ad 600-700, Caroline Palmer
Gender And Religion In A Shifting Social Landscape: Anglo-Saxon Mortuary Practices, Ad 600-700, Caroline Palmer
Undergraduate Honors Theses
My thesis examines seventh-century East Anglian mortuary practices and cross-correlates grave goods and human remains to determine whether there was an expression of the sexual division of labor during this period of social and religious change. I argue that gender roles changed as a result of adopting kingdoms and Christianity. Prior to this time period, Anglo-Saxons were primarily pagan and were buried with extensive burial goods. In addition to changes in religious and burial practices, during the Final Phase (600-700 AD) there appears to have been a division of labor that was not as dichotomous in the Migration Phase (450-600 …
Differentiated Reactions To Payment For Ecosystem Service Programs In The Columbia River Basin: A Qualitative Study Exploring Irrigation District Characteristics As Local Common-Pool Resource Management Institutions In Oregon, Usa, Spencer Thomas Plumb, Travis Paveglio, Kelly West Jones, Brett Alan Miller, Dennis R. Differentiated Reactions To Payment For Ecosystem Service Programs In The Columbia River Basin: A Qualitative Study Exploring Irrigation District Characteristics As Local Common-Pool Resource Management Institutions In Oregon, Usa, Spencer Thomas Plumb, Travis Paveglio, Kelly West Jones, Brett Alan Miller, Dennis R. Becker
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Student Research
Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs are increasingly employed to encourage individual actors to preserve and/or restore environmentally beneficial instream flows in freshwater ecosystems. However, the success of these PES programs has been mixed across geographic locations and the influence of local resource management institutions remains unclear. In the western U.S.A. little is known about the role of irrigation districts regarding these water transactions. This study addresses that deficit by using existing knowledge about common-pool resource management characteristics to explore the role of irrigation districts in PES programs that incentivize water transactions in the state of Oregon. We conducted 20 …

Background:
The current vaccine against tuberculosis, BCG, is effective when given in most TB-endemic countries at birth but has diminished efficacy against pulmonary TB after 15–20 years. As a result, new booster vaccines for adolescents and adults are being developed to realize the World Health Organization target of global elimination of TB by 2035. Multiple TB candidates thus are in active clinical development.
Methods:
One of these, DAR-901, is advancing in human clinical trials. These clinical trials are conducted in BCG immunized adults with and without HIV infection in order to assess safety and efficacy among the people most in …

Patterns Of Mental Health And Their Associations With Spirituality In Women Exposed To Adversity, Caroline Cecil Kaufman
Patterns Of Mental Health And Their Associations With Spirituality In Women Exposed To Adversity, Caroline Cecil Kaufman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Intimate partner violence (IPV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) are independently associated with negative psychological outcomes. Spirituality has been linked to positive outcomes. The present study interviewed 183 women exposed to recent IPV and/or living with HIV. Latent profile analysis was used to identify patterns of mental health (depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress) and examine their associations with spirituality. Four profiles emerged: Very Low Distress, Low Distress, High Average Distress, and Very High Distress. Women in the Very Low and Low Distress groups reported higher spirituality than women in the High Average and Very High Distress groups. Findings contribute to …

Uncovering The Rules Of Language: What The Case Of The Word 'Glimpse' Can Teach Us, Jessica Holtz
Uncovering The Rules Of Language: What The Case Of The Word 'Glimpse' Can Teach Us, Jessica Holtz
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Humans are able to naturally produce grammatical sentences they’ve never heard before in their native languages and have others understand what they mean, an amazing feat for a process which we go through daily without much effort. Languages are rule-governed and systematic in ways that are sometimes not so transparent. These rules are what create the structure within a language, making it learnable and usable. By studying these rules and systems we can better understand how the human brain processes and produces language (Pinker, 2007). One way in which we classify verbs in order to better understand them is to …

No One Left Behind: Forensic Anthropology In The Community, Keith Biddle, Britney Radford
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Forensic Anthropology and Bioarchaeology are subdisciplines of the field of Physical Anthropology. Forensic Anthropology deals with the study of human remains in the medico-legal context, while Bioarchaeology focuses on human remains and their excavation within the archaeological record. This historic burial case came to the University of Montana through the initiated request of a citizen in an effort to identify his relatives’ remains by correlating our findings with family records before being re- located to another cemetery. The remains were originally exhumed by Beaverhead County and transported to the Montana State Crime Lab in Missoula before being transferred to the …
“Is This My Great Aunt?”: An Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains To Construct A Biological Profile, Hayley Savage, Samantha Ramey
“Is This My Great Aunt?”: An Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains To Construct A Biological Profile, Hayley Savage, Samantha Ramey
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Forensic anthropology is the sub-discipline that applies the principles and methods of physical anthropology to medico-legal cases. Forensic anthropologists have a multiplicity of skills that are used in various ways, but amongst those is the ability to construct a biological profile from a set, or sets of, unknown, skeletonized remains. Biological profiles of adult human skeletal remains consist of sex, age-at-death, ancestry, stature, trauma, and pathology. The information gained through these analyses are used in two ways: to provide immediate supporting evidence for identification, and to provide a means of narrowing potential lists of individuals. There are various methods to …

The Use Of Forensic Anthropology Outside The Medico-Legal Context: Creating A Historic Biological Profile, Elena Hughes
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
The analysis of skeletal remains in the medico-legal context falls in the hands of a forensic anthropologist. The hands on skills that forensic anthropologists learn, and practice, help them to recreate the life and personhood of the deceased. In order to do so, the skeletonized remains of an individual or individuals is examined for characteristics indicative of age-at-death, sex, ancestry, pathology, stature, as well as trauma. This information is used to create a biological profile that can then be given to law enforcement to help identify the individual. There are various types of analyses that can be done to create …
Pig Trauma Models: A Civilian Perspective On Ar-15 Skeletal Trauma, Lauren M. Kenney
Pig Trauma Models: A Civilian Perspective On Ar-15 Skeletal Trauma, Lauren M. Kenney
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
In the last decade, our country has seen an unprecedented wave of terror punctuated by increasing events of gun-related violence. Consequently, the use of firearms against civilians or upon targets containing civilians has inevitably had a direct impact on the health of those affected, and in many cases these events have concluded with mass number fatalities. The driving force for this research falls to the lack of available literature regarding the skeletal trauma associated with high-velocity firearms outside of realm of the military. Trauma from high-velocity firearms encountered in the civilian setting differ from what is seen in military combatants …
Seneca's Personification Of The Passions, Hannah Smith
Seneca's Personification Of The Passions, Hannah Smith
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
By personifying anger, life, and time in De Brevitate Vitae through the use of the active verb forms and possessive genitives, Seneca emphasizes the deleterious effect passions have on humans. This personification contributes to the loss of human agency passions produce. Therefore, not only Seneca’s words, but his grammar, support the idea that passions should be completely extirpated in order for humans to have a more controlled life. In making anger a person, Seneca gives it an agency he often doesn’t give humans, and in so doing he elevates this emotion to a level humans cannot control. In this way, …

UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Archaeological praxis necessarily requires at least one object (an artifact; a piece of technology or something that functions as an object) to articulate and explain ideologies from the past. The problem is that the object of ideological desire is abstract and difficult to locate in the archaeological record in reified form. Historical Archaeologist Mark P. Leone attempted to locate such an object several times while conducting archaeological investigations into historical Mormonism, Mormon historical ecology, and technologies employed by Mormons in the arid American West. It is posited here that the object of Mormon ideological desire in the archaeological record within …

A Comprehensive Study On The Application Of The Theory Of African American Offending, Janice C. Simon
A Comprehensive Study On The Application Of The Theory Of African American Offending, Janice C. Simon
Honors College Theses
Racial disparity in the Criminal Justice System (CJS) has always been a hot button topic of discussion and the question of whether it exist or not. In the last few decades race and crime have become the overwhelming media topic and it has gone up in flames over the recent killings of young, unarmed, African American men by police officers. However, this study examines and confirms that racial disparity occurs at every level of the CJS, while subsequently explaining how and why society believes the stereotypes and why African Americans effectively exhibit this stereotype.

The research focuses on the function of myth and folklore in society, and how different people view local Appalachian lore. Topics discussed also include common themes among myths of different origins. The study will include surveys sent out to Marshall University students and interviews with local residents. The findings from this research should show who engages in folklore and what it means to them.
Socialization And Solidarity In Workers' Unions Of The 21st Century Appalachia, Hannah Smith
Socialization And Solidarity In Workers' Unions Of The 21st Century Appalachia, Hannah Smith
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
As industrialization brought new jobs to major cities and coal mining to Appalachia in the late 17th century, laborers in the steel and coal industries worked sixteen or more hours a day in terrible conditions. These workers formed labor unions to ensure management provided fair wages, hours, and working conditions. From the mistreated coalminers’ violent fight for a union in Appalachia during the 1921 Battle of Blair Mountain to the Wildcat strikes of the 1950s, solidarity in unions has been a significant focal point in the history of Appalachia. Therefore, it is important to interpret if a union continues …

Adopting Ancient Ways: Who Participates And Why, Larry Ross
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
As digital technologies are now easily accessible and readily available, most all persons in the United States possess a myriad of high-tech devices such as smart phones, laptops, tablets, or some facsimile thereof. Used every day by practically everyone of all ages, and from all demographics, these devices have become commonplace within every aspect of modern living, in the home, workplace, and available for public use. However, in lieu of this exponentially growing phenomena, many people, both on their own and within groups, have decided to engage in a re-learning of more ancient, non-technical living and subsistence strategies. Hence, it …
Public Library Usage Among College Students, Brianna Shelton
Public Library Usage Among College Students, Brianna Shelton
COLA Research and Creativity Conference
In this study, I argue that college students use public libraries in addition to or instead of academic libraries, regardless of whether they are a traditional or nontraditional student. I present research that has been conducted over the last decade about how millennials frequent a public library’s digital services, and that nontraditional students may venture to public libraries to better suit their needs. My own results have generated that students at Marshall University have visited a public library either since coming to college or before coming to Marshall, and that most of the programming and services they suggest would entice …
