Ethnic Identity In Yugoslavia And Its Role In The Balkan Wars Of The 1990s, Carl Anderson Apr 2018

Ethnic Identity In Yugoslavia And Its Role In The Balkan Wars Of The 1990s, Carl Anderson

European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium

The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) existed as a peaceful country from its inception following World War II until its dissolution which began in the late 1980s. By 1992, the country ceased to exist, and wars had erupted throughout several former Yugoslav republics. In order to determine how these events unfolded, this paper first seeks to analyze ethnic relations in Yugoslavia following Tito’s death and secondly, how the deterioration among the country’s ethnic groups led to war in the early 1990s. Using path dependency theory, this paper analyzes the changes in political leadership with case studies of three Yugoslav …

Scholarly Communication In The Context Of Digital Literacy: Navigation And Decision Making In A Complex Landscape, Joyce Ogburn, Allegra Swift, Emma Molls Apr 2018

Scholarly Communication In The Context Of Digital Literacy: Navigation And Decision Making In A Complex Landscape, Joyce Ogburn, Allegra Swift, Emma Molls

Digital Initiatives Symposium

As digital technologies have come to dominate the conduct and dissemination of scholarship, seasoned and budding scholars alike may have little knowledge of what happens with the data that are gathered from their scholarly products, online profiles, and community platforms. Growing commercialization, mergers, buyouts, and venture capital investment lend credence to the idea of research results as “big data” to be mined and scholarly communication as “big business”. The scope of the issues that now govern the funding and sharing of knowledge is formidable and international. How does one even begin to understand what is needed to navigate and make …

"Vivez Sans Temps Morts, Jouissez Sans Entraves:" Language And Identity In The May '68 Student-Worker Action Committees, John Cowles Apr 2018

"Vivez Sans Temps Morts, Jouissez Sans Entraves:" Language And Identity In The May '68 Student-Worker Action Committees, John Cowles

Voces Novae

This paper attempts to recast and distance the interpretation of May '68 away from popular historiographical trends in which the movement is treated as a "generational revolt" or a "cultural revolution" that allowed France to develop into a modern, liberal society. The character of the relationship between militant students and workers remains the most complicated and understudied element of the uprising. Thus, the actions taken by student and worker militants at the occupied Sorbonne constitute the most radical element of the movement, and represented the only cases in which the radical language produced by activist students achieved form, namely in …

Examining Alumni Perceptions Of Social And Cultural Capital Accumulation Through Ursinus’S Summer Fellows Program, Sydney Dickson Apr 2018

Examining Alumni Perceptions Of Social And Cultural Capital Accumulation Through Ursinus’S Summer Fellows Program, Sydney Dickson

Anthropology Honors Papers

A common offering among undergraduate institutions is an intensive summer research program, which allows students to complete a project independently without any other academic obligations. These programs are designed to foster useful skills, valuable relationships, and scholarly work. Ursinus College, a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania, has such a program: Summer Fellows. With colleges attempting to appeal to a decreasing number of high-achieving applicants, student desire to pursue intellectual interests, and employers looking for skilled job candidates, it is worthwhile to examine the perceived efficacy of this program. This paper utilizes the perspectives of alumni reflecting on what they …

American Muslim Women: Feminism, Equality, And Difference, Amber Coniglio Apr 2018

American Muslim Women: Feminism, Equality, And Difference, Amber Coniglio

Honors Theses

American Muslim women face constant surveillance, stress, and pressure to change and adapt to mainstream society. In the United States, Muslim women find ways to negotiate their identities, express their concerns, and learn through their faith by means of Islamic scholarship, Islamic feminism, and reinterpretations of the Quran. They are reconciling their multifaceted identities with better understanding of sacred text as well as solidifying their desired gender roles within their communities. They are challenging norms and creating new spaces for themselves within the ummah as well as the United States. American Muslim women find courage, strength, and autonomy through Islamic …

Exploring Spanish Heritage Language Learning And Task Design For Virtual Worlds, Brandon J. King Apr 2018

Exploring Spanish Heritage Language Learning And Task Design For Virtual Worlds, Brandon J. King

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this exploratory case study, I take a constant comparative methods type approach to exploring a shift in second language acquisition (SLA) away from approaches built on the assumption that language participants in the U.S. are monolingual English speakers (Block, 2003; Ortega, 2009, 2013; Thompson, 2013; Valdés, 2005), with little initial investment in the language or its culture (Rivera-Mills, 2012; Valdés, Fishman, Chavéz, & Pérez, 2006). This bias has entrenched a monolingual speaker baseline for statistical analysis within many experimental designs (Block, 2003; Ortega, 2009, 2013; Thompson, 2013; Valdés, 2005). Further, I redress this methodological bias by applying sociocultural theoretical …

From Orphan To Child Of God: Pentecostal Theologizing As A Channel Of Social Transformation In Mozambique, Jeremy Bone, Samuel Lee Apr 2018

From Orphan To Child Of God: Pentecostal Theologizing As A Channel Of Social Transformation In Mozambique, Jeremy Bone, Samuel Lee

Spiritus: ORU Journal of Theology

Heidi and Rolland Baker, founders of Mozambican-based Iris Global, have been influential in developing a distinctively pentecostal framework for holistic mission. While evangelism and social work are now widely seen as integrated processes, pentecostalism demands attention also to the supernatural. This paper posits that the theological convictions of the Bakers have served as a launching pad for their holistic care of orphans in Mozambique. Because pentecostal movements are rooted in experience, pneumatic theologizing presupposes praxis. This paper will initially examine three theological impulses at the core of Iris Global: pentecostalism, revivalism, and incarnational love. These theological impulses are then weaved …

Web Archiving For Academic Institutions, Lori Donovan, Mary Haberle Apr 2018

Web Archiving For Academic Institutions, Lori Donovan, Mary Haberle

Digital Initiatives Symposium

With the advent of the internet, content that institutional archivists once preserved in physical formats is now web-based, and new avenues for information sharing, interaction and record-keeping are fundamentally changing how the history of the 21st century will be studied. Due to the transient nature of web content, much of this information is at risk. This half-day workshop will cover the basics of web archiving, help attendees identify content of interest to them and their communities, and give them an opportunity to interact with tools that assist with the capture and preservation of web content. Attendees will gain hands-on web …

Where Trying To Conceive Becomes A Community Effort: A Digital Ethnography Of Online Infertility Forums, Megan Burns Apr 2018

Where Trying To Conceive Becomes A Community Effort: A Digital Ethnography Of Online Infertility Forums, Megan Burns

Sociology Honors Papers

Online forums for women using in vitro fertilization (IVF), or similar assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), provide a useful setting to further evaluate and understand women’s expectations of motherhood, the relationship infertile women have with physicians and biomedicine, and their interactions on the forums. Some critics of ARTs consider them a tool of oppression in a pronatalist state. The pressure and desire to become a biological mother leads the women with access to these technologies to use them regardless. Through digital ethnographic research on four online ART forums, this research examines the intersection of altruism and self-interest in the ways forum-users …

Furs: Functionality, Fashion, And Franchise, Jenna Q. Detweiler Apr 2018

Furs: Functionality, Fashion, And Franchise, Jenna Q. Detweiler

Environment and Sustainability Honors Papers

Animal furs have been used in various manners through human history. Early humans cut crude shawls for warmth, and with the development of tools such as needles, closer-fitting clothing such as fur pants became possible. As time went on, products such as wool and cotton were used for clothing and, with fur alternatives, furs were reserved for the ultra-wealthy in some cultures. The image of fur as a luxury item has remained ever since, but simultaneously fur has become more accessible to the general public. Meanwhile, animal rights movements have successfully dampened interest in fur in some countries and communities. …

The Social Factors Of Fossilization, Ashley Brigham Apr 2018

The Social Factors Of Fossilization, Ashley Brigham

MA TESOL Collection

The notion of fossilization has been one of the most controversial, yet enduring topics in second language acquisition (SLA) theory since its first appearance in Selinker’s 1972 seminal article “Interlanguage.” In the past, work regarding fossilization sought to either support or challenge its existence, to determine the putative causes and to predict what linguistic items were prone to becoming fossilized. Initially, the possible causes which enjoyed the most attention were first language interference and the learner’s age and length of residency in the target language community. Now, however, with the current climate of SLA acknowledging that both learning and non-learning …

In The Shadow Of Japanese Identity, Rosendo Lopez-Duran Apr 2018

In The Shadow Of Japanese Identity, Rosendo Lopez-Duran

East Asian Studies Honors Papers

Japan is, as former Prime Minister Asō Tarō once put it, commonly described as being “one race, one civilization, one language and one culture.” This statement reflects a popular conception of Japan as a homogenous nation. However, the purpose of this paper, building on earlier research, is to assess what exactly Japanese identity is, how it is constructed / maintained, and who is and is not considered “Japanese.” The impetus of this inquiry comes from my research of the hisabetsu burakumin, a Japanese social outcaste group, who have undergone significant changes throughout their long history as a socially-constructed “minority.” …

Millennial Culture And Epistemology: Exploring The Meaning-Making Discourse Of An Emerging Generation, Sophia Driscoll Gamber Apr 2018

Millennial Culture And Epistemology: Exploring The Meaning-Making Discourse Of An Emerging Generation, Sophia Driscoll Gamber

Sociology Honors Papers

Millennial Culture and Epistemology takes a mixed methods approach to understanding the culture and epistemological processes of the current cohort of millennial undergraduate students at a small residential liberal arts college. The study first identifies specific trends in epistemological frameworks, ethics, and claimed spiritual/religious identities among a sample of undergraduate students and finds that students are commonly utilizing subjectivist epistemological frameworks that are built around cultural relativism and skepticism. The study then unpacks markers of undergraduate millennial culture as they relate to epistemology and finds that students’ stances on issues of community, social ethics and responsibility, religion, and spirituality are …
