Micropaleontological Record Of A Preserved, Late Pleistocene Bald Cypress Forest On The Northern Gulf Of Mexico Inner Shelf, Jonathan Thien Truong

LSU Master's Theses

A cluster of previously buried Taxodium distichum stumps are exposed and preserved in growth position at the bottom of a trough on the inner Gulf of Mexico (GOM) continental shelf in 18 m water depth and 13 km offshore Orange Beach, AL. Radiocarbon ages from wood and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of sediments suggest a Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3 age, or older. This study builds on the previous work of Gonzalez (2018) and Obeclz (2017). Five biofacies were identified in vibracore collected in 2015 and 2016: 1) the Holocene Mississippi-Alabama-Florida (MAFLA) sand sheet, 2) a Holocene interbedded sand …

Pavilions As Urban Placemakers: Temporary Architecture And Community Engagement, Avery Asato May 2018

Pavilions As Urban Placemakers: Temporary Architecture And Community Engagement, Avery Asato

University Honors Theses

Temporary urbanism in the form of temporary pavilions can reveal the social, economic, or political needs and wants of a community. The pavilion can act as a space of freedom from physical needs such as shelter, as well as freedom with the purpose of meeting, exchanging, and thinking (Bevan, 2015). When the pavilion is only in place for an intentionally temporary span of time, it is possible for activities, ideas, and communities to form, whereas the implication of permanence may not allow for the same action, due to efficient cost, lower level of planning, and faster development (Bishop & Williams, …

The Role Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Gay Men's Health Disparities, Andrew M. Edwards May 2018

The Role Of Hegemonic Masculinity In Gay Men's Health Disparities, Andrew M. Edwards

University Honors Theses

This study was undertaken to better understand how gay men’s subjection to hegemonic masculinity relates to gay men’s health disparities. Statistically, gay men are subject to numerous health disparities, most notably regarding their sexual health, substance use, and mental health. Masculinities are a relevant framework to contextualize these disparities, as masculinities, and specifically hegemonic masculinity, affect how the gay man engages with himself and society. Employing a qualitative, cross-sectional design, this study utilized in-depth, semi-structured interviews with ten gay men residing in the Portland-metro area. Participants detailed a thematic sociocultural framework in which gay masculinity performance is ubiquitously graded on …

The Urban Oak Savanna: Evaluating Co-Design And Collaborative Land Management In Downtown Portland, Oregon, Haley Jane Dunham May 2018

The Urban Oak Savanna: Evaluating Co-Design And Collaborative Land Management In Downtown Portland, Oregon, Haley Jane Dunham

University Honors Theses

In downtown Portland, Oregon, Portland State University (PSU) has composed a small Oak Savanna ecosystem, no bigger than the average classroom, nuzzled into the contours of the built environment. Many different stakeholders habitually use this urban green space, some of whom may consider their interests oppositional. These groups include PSU’s Indigenous Nations Studies community and the local dog owning community, who have historically had difficulties sharing the space for different uses. Because there are so many diverse interests in the space, planners from PSU facilitated co-design meetings, or “charettes”, in which stakeholders collaboratively imagined what the space could be with …

“Jedna Noga Tutaj I Jedna Noga Tam”: The Polish Population In Ireland And Identity Formation In An Expanding European Union, Ella Iacoviello

Celebration of Learning

In this paper I address the idea of a changing cultural identity among the Polish communities in Ireland. Though quantitative demographic data as well as qualitative data before 2008 exists, there is little written about how the Polish population exist today, years after Ireland's economic downturn. The research presented in this paper offers a look into contemporary Ireland through the eyes of current Polish immigrants. During the summer of 2017, I spent three and a half weeks conducting ethnographic fieldwork in Dublin and Cork through the use of interviewing and participant observation. From living with first generation families, to interviewing …

The Composer, The Musicologist, His Wife, And Her Lover: On Lacan’S Relevance To Music, Thomas Reiner May 2018

The Composer, The Musicologist, His Wife, And Her Lover: On Lacan’S Relevance To Music, Thomas Reiner

Directions of New Music

This paper asks what it is to write about music. When we ask students or colleagues to write about music are we asking them to describe music structurally, or to cope with music’s ever-shifting signifieds? The paper attempts to answer this question by clarifying the relationship between composition, musicology, and music “itself” by way of a Lacanian reading of Peter Greenaway's film The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. Lacan’s existential concepts of the Imaginary, the Symbolic, and the Real are first introduced in relation to music with reference to music by Hans Werner Henze, Lady Gaga, …

Using An Educational Session To Improve The Knowledge, Confidence, And Beliefs About Psychopharmacology For Behavioral Health Clinicians, Sharon Bennett

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Psychiatric illness is unpredictable, has spasmodic tendencies, and represents one of the most reported types of disabilities in the United States. Behavioral health clinicians are front line respondents and considered a major ally to providers by supporting medication management recommendations and referring new patients for medication management. Basic evidence-based psychopharmacology improves behavioral health clinicians’ knowledge, however, is inadequate in curricula, and many undergraduate and graduate programs lack one dedicated psychopharmacology class. This abbreviated knowledge contributes to inadequate referrals for treatment and poor confidence in supporting the practitioners’ medication recommendations.

Method: This project examined behavioral health clinicians’ knowledge, confidence, and …

A Latent Profile Analysis Of Benefactor And Beneficiary Organizational Citizenship Behaviors Toward Individuals, Seulki Jang May 2018

A Latent Profile Analysis Of Benefactor And Beneficiary Organizational Citizenship Behaviors Toward Individuals, Seulki Jang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although organizational citizenship behaviors toward individuals (OCB-I) have been studied over decades, the beneficiary side of OCB-I has been understudied. The co-existing and interactive possibility of benefactor OCB-I and beneficiary OCB-I within individuals has been ignored. Therefore, this research adopted a person-centered approach and examined different profiles of benefactor OCB-I and beneficiary OCB-I on the basis of Grant’s (2013) theory. Results from Study 1 data (cross-sectional data) and Study 2 data (multiple waves of data) revealed the three profile groups: vigorous (high benefactor OCB-I and high beneficiary OCB-I), moderate (moderate benefactor OCB-I and moderate beneficiary OCB-I), and passive OCB-I groups …

Social New Orleans: Identity, Capital, Space, Jonathon G. Brearley May 2018

Social New Orleans: Identity, Capital, Space, Jonathon G. Brearley

University Honors Theses

Fundamentally, space is a social product. Social practices both create and are supported by built environment. Urbanity is so much more than a dense array of buildings; it is the street, the sidewalks, the allies, the parks, the people––from the houseless to the penthoused. A city is best understood through the mechanisms that produce the social capital, identity, and space of those people who occupy it. The city of New Orleans is no exception. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina displaced hundreds of thousands of residents, deeply impacting the social economy of the city. This research explicates three unique social practices in …

From Travellers To Activist Global Citizens? Practitioner Reflections On An Activist/Volunteer Tourist Project, Sameena Dalwai, Brendan Donegan May 2018

From Travellers To Activist Global Citizens? Practitioner Reflections On An Activist/Volunteer Tourist Project, Sameena Dalwai, Brendan Donegan

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Where their parents sought an essentially passive observation of the exotic while "roughing it‟ on foot and in sleeper class, a new generation of young travellers from the global North seek authentic experience in the global South through opportunities to actively engage with the realities of poverty-stricken slums as volunteer tourists. Free of their conventional social ties and uninhibited in their attempts to carve out new global citizen roles for themselves, the youths experience a bonding „communitas‟ with each other, and when they return home their social status is raised in the eyes of employers and peers. This paper focuses …

From Liminoid To Limivoid: Understanding Contemporary Bungee Jumping From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Bjørn Thomassen, Maja Balle May 2018

From Liminoid To Limivoid: Understanding Contemporary Bungee Jumping From A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Bjørn Thomassen, Maja Balle

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

This article is about bungee jumping and how it reflects the world in which we live. During the 1980s bungee jumping became one of the most popular ways of seeking a ‘real experience’, when the practice was commercialised and introduced as a leisure activity all around the world. This happened in the same period as outdoor sport activities or ‘outdoor recreation’ exploded in kinds and numbers, clearly linked to the ‘experiential turn in tourism’ and the proliferation of ‘adventure tourism’. A key feature of these activities is the experience of danger: going to the limits, or indeed, standing on the …

Another Space: Gleaning The Urban Littoral, Les Roberts

Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice

Another Space is a short ethnographic film about artist Antony Gormley‟s installation „Another Place‟ at Crosby Beach north of Liverpool. The visuals, shot on a visit to the beach in Easter 2009, are cut to a mosaic of voices drawn from interviews conducted with visitors to the beach. Respondents are asked what the artwork means to them and what feelings and emotions it evokes. This article, written as an accompaniment to the film, as well as to Hazel Andrew‟s study published in the edited volume Liminal Landscapes: Travel, Experience, and Spaces In-between (2012), provides an auto-ethnographic reflection on the installation …

Contingent Narratives: Exploring Facets Of Cross-Cultural Awareness In An Experiential Global Education Course, Nicholas Bardo May 2018

Contingent Narratives: Exploring Facets Of Cross-Cultural Awareness In An Experiential Global Education Course, Nicholas Bardo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This narrative inquiry explores the process through which a combination of coursework, field experiences, and experiential classroom activities engaged pre-service teachers with opportunities to expand their perspective upon culturally normative conceptions of values, beliefs, and worldview. Due to the current racial and ethnic demographic gap separating the professional ranks of the teaching force and the increasingly diverse population of students in the United States, cross-cultural awareness is imperative for both teacher education programming and membership in a culturally pluralistic society.

Drawing on multiple data points, the narrative illuminates the participant voices, context, and dynamic social process of teaching and learning. …

Inherent Multiculturalism: An Ancient Chinese Practice Becomes A Part Of The Indonesian Everyday, Margaret Chan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Several methods are used to trace cultural transfer between countries. The time-honoured methods are chronicles of early travellers and archaeology. We can also look to epigraphs and loan words. Present-day ethnic communities also suggest earlier settlements. Edward B. Tylor proposed the world distribution of games as anthropological evidence. Tylor's method combined with an archaeology into the Everyday provides evidence of earlier cultural transfer and present-day applications of the game enables analysis to draw socio-cultural knowledge of inter-ethnic, inter-cultural reception to foreign influences in host societies.
