The Return Of The Self, Or Whatever Happened To Postmodern Jurisprudence?, Stephen Matthew Feldman
The Return Of The Self, Or Whatever Happened To Postmodern Jurisprudence?, Stephen Matthew Feldman
Faculty Articles
Postmodern jurisprudence was all the rage in the 1990s Two of the most renowned postmodernists Stanley Fish and Pierre Schlag both persistently criticized mainstream legal scholars for believing they were modernist selvesindependent sovereign and autonomous agents who could remake the social and legal world merely by writing a law review article Then Fish and Schlag turned on each other Each attacked the other for making the same mistake harboring a modernist self I revisit this skirmish for two reasons First it helps explain the current moribund state of postmodern jurisprudence If two of the leading postmodernists could not avoid embedding …

Santería In A Globalized World: A Study In Afro-Cuban Folkloric Music, Nathan Montgomery
Santería In A Globalized World: A Study In Afro-Cuban Folkloric Music, Nathan Montgomery
Lawrence University Honors Projects
The Yoruban people of modern-day Nigeria worship many deities called orichas by means of singing, drumming, and dancing. Their aurally preserved artistic traditions are intrinsically connected to both religious ceremony and everyday life. These forms of worship traveled to the Americas during the colonial era through the brutal transatlantic slave trade and continued to evolve beneath racist societal hierarchies implemented by western European nations. Despite severe oppression, Yoruban slaves in Cuba were able to disguise orichas behind Catholic saints so that they could still actively worship in public. This initial guise led to a synthesis of religious practice, language, and …
Understanding Zika Virus In Rural Costa Rica: Integrating Medical Anthropology And Public Health, Hailey Bomar
Understanding Zika Virus In Rural Costa Rica: Integrating Medical Anthropology And Public Health, Hailey Bomar
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Framed by critical medical anthropology, this applied study utilizes political economic theory and ethnographic methods to contextualize and evaluate the implementation of a global health initiative at the local level, as well as critically evaluates the response of state and international health agencies to the Zika epidemic in Costa Rica. The prevalence of arboviruses including Zika and the potential for epidemics and future population-level health consequences are examined by a multiaxial approach that incorporates themes of culture, socioeconomic context, issues of power and control, and human impact on the natural environment. By combining an interdisciplinary approach that considers the economic, …
The Body In Pain / The Body In Ecstasy, Shannon Kenny
The Body In Pain / The Body In Ecstasy, Shannon Kenny
LSU Master's Theses
The Body in Pain / The Body in Ecstasy is a series of short lyric essays/extended poems which catalogue major discriminatory movements against disabled people in the 20th and 21st century, specifically in the United States. My work contains duel storylines, using these movements/categories of violence as frames for my own personal narrative, and connecting individual experience to larger historical structures. I do this to disrupt the notion that history is disconnected from the present, and showcase how humans are built by context, where personal and political are inexorably intertwined, and social development is tied to both the body and …

Covering The Costs Of Curation: A Comparative Analysis In The Southeastern United States, Amanda M. Sexton
Covering The Costs Of Curation: A Comparative Analysis In The Southeastern United States, Amanda M. Sexton
Honors College Theses
In 2017, a survey was used to assess the curation crisis and see how curators have adapted their repositories to combat the issue. The results have been analyzed compared to other surveys sent out in the past twenty years to monitor changes and trends in repositories. This is an effort to explore and understand the challenges archaeological repositories face, how they manage the obstacles that accompany archaeological curation, and how this has changed over the years. Hopefully, the study of the ongoing curation crisis and those who have to oversee it will encourage conversation and collaboration between those who wish …

Understanding “Southern” Identities And Confederate Iconography: Internal Orientalism, (Mis)Representation, And Social Media, Robert W. Perham
Understanding “Southern” Identities And Confederate Iconography: Internal Orientalism, (Mis)Representation, And Social Media, Robert W. Perham
LSU Master's Theses
In light of recent debates surrounding Confederate iconography (flags, statues and symbols), this thesis has three foci. First, the continued construction of the American “South” as an internal “Other.” Second, the reactive perspectives taken by self-identifying “Southerners” who both support and denounce Confederate iconography. Third, the role that social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) have as sites that both disseminate hegemonic discourse and facilitate resistance. Drawing on a Foucauldian discourse analysis of content (news articles, posts, videos, images, memes) published and discussed on social media, I explore whether "the South" continues to be portrayed as a lesser "Other" nationally, …
A Novel Multiproxy Approach To Reconstructing Sea Surface Temperature In The Southwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Marissa Anne Vara
A Novel Multiproxy Approach To Reconstructing Sea Surface Temperature In The Southwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Marissa Anne Vara
LSU Master's Theses
Coral Sr/Ca is a widely-used proxy for sea surface temperature (SST); however, discrepancies in the coral Sr/Ca-SST relationship among colonies of the same species makes uncertainty in absolute temperature reconstructions larger than the climate signal yet climate variability studies are possible. Furthermore, the riverine input of terrestrial carbonate weathering products to the coastal waters can disrupt the coral Sr/Ca-SST signal by changing local seawater chemistry. This study evaluates the fidelity and reproducibly of coral SST proxies (Sr/Ca, Li/Ca, Mg/Li, Sr-U, Mg/Ca, and U/Ca) and a riverine-upwelling proxy (Ba/Ca) in four Orbicella faveolata colonies in two reefs offshore from Veracruz, Mexico …

Creative Democracy, Communication, And The Uncharted Sources Of Bhimrao Ambedkar’S Deweyan Pragmatism, Scott R. Stroud
Creative Democracy, Communication, And The Uncharted Sources Of Bhimrao Ambedkar’S Deweyan Pragmatism, Scott R. Stroud
Education and Culture
This article explores the contours of the Indian pragmatist Bhimrao Ambedkar and his reconstruction of Buddhism in the 1950s. As a student of John Dewey at Columbia University, young Ambedkar was heavily influenced by the pragmatist ideas of democracy and reconstruction. Throughout his life he would continue to evoke Dewey’s words and ideas in his fight against caste injustice in India. This article explores the possibility that Ambedkar could have been influenced by Dewey’s work, “Creative Democracy—The Task Before Us.” In exploring the intriguing evidence that points toward such an influence, Ambedkar’s The Buddha and His Dhamma emerges as a …
Reconstruction Of Social Studies, William Gaudelli, Megan J. Laverty
Reconstruction Of Social Studies, William Gaudelli, Megan J. Laverty
Education and Culture
As the world grows increasingly contentious, education for citizenship demands greater attention. Yet at this perilous juncture, social studies has neglected to take up the task of preparing citizens in a democratic and global society. Social studies has become increasingly fragmented and isolated by disciplinary foci that fetishize academic pursuits over broadly social purposes, precisely what Dewey warned against and which represent but a small portion of its functions. The academic-only social studies education has created a temporal disconnection that affirms the preparation for future life rather than, as Dewey preferred, the school as life itself. Dewey tasked the school …
“Cup Of Humanity”—An Experiment In Equitable Group Dynamics, Jeff Dubois
“Cup Of Humanity”—An Experiment In Equitable Group Dynamics, Jeff Dubois
Headwaters
“Cup of Humanity” is a format for group discussion in which assigned groups of four students (rotating every time) practice the host/guest relationship of the Japanese tea ceremony (Chanoyu) so that everyone gets the chance to speak, listen, and be heard by each classmate. This involves literally serving tea to each other. I devised this format through an integration of techniques learned from workshops and conferences on inclusive pedagogy, on one hand, and a rather loose interpretation of the principle of the Japanese tea ceremony, on the other. This report details the pedagogical principles that inspired the format as well …

Introducing Environmental Policy At Augustana: A Comparative Study Of Sustainability Practices At Small Liberal Arts Colleges, Christian Steven Boussemaere Elliott, Thea Gonzales, Kathryn Evans, Hunter Colleen Ridley, Erin Cygan
Celebration of Learning
This study analyzes environmental practices and policy at higher education institutions and examines the process it takes to implement them from student advocacy to administrative recognition that results in the implementation of sustainable plans, programs, and structures for the college in order to produce a feasible proposal for sustainable development at Augustana College. The authors conducted interviews with five colleges that have achieved sustainability in various ways and are largely similar to Augustana in religious affiliation, cultural background, and location: Kenyon, Knox, Luther, Moraine Valley Community College, and Oberlin. The goal from these interviews was to generate ideas from colleges …
Social Support, Depression, And Life Stress: A Meta-Analytic Path Analysis, Kayli Ahuja, Melissa Hagerty, Jenny Townsend
Social Support, Depression, And Life Stress: A Meta-Analytic Path Analysis, Kayli Ahuja, Melissa Hagerty, Jenny Townsend
Celebration of Learning
Previous research has shown a negative correlation between perceived support and depression. Findings regarding the association between received support and depression have been mixed. Some studies have observed negative correlations between received support and depression. Others have found no correlation or even a positive correlation between received support and depression. This study used meta-analysis to explore the difference between perceived support and received support with regard to their correlation with depression. Results showed that perceived support was negatively correlated with depression. However, received support was not significantly associated with depression. In order to understand the difference between these two correlations, …
Human, Animal, And Life In The Posthuman Turn: From Agamben To Young Marx, Xingkun Wang
Human, Animal, And Life In The Posthuman Turn: From Agamben To Young Marx, Xingkun Wang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The Posthuman thought since the 1980s has challenged anthropocentrism and humanism to a great extent, and has promoted our reflections on what human is, on the relationship between humans and animals, and on human life itself. Three paths of Posthuman research will be traced, in which the concept of "biopolitics" and "anthropological machine" of Agamben proceeds from the animalization of human in the political field, and reveals the the dilemma of exclusive inclusion facing contemporary human life. But Agamben comes up with a passive politics based on a-historical analysis. This paper is intended to go back to the analysis of …
