Estimating The Reliability Of Scores From A Social Network Survey Questionnaire In Light Of Actor, Alter, And Dyad Clustering Effects, Timothy Dean Walker Jun 2018

Estimating The Reliability Of Scores From A Social Network Survey Questionnaire In Light Of Actor, Alter, And Dyad Clustering Effects, Timothy Dean Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Survey instruments utilized to quantify relationships, or aspects of relationships, may introduce multiple sources of nonindependence"”clustered variance"”into scores, including from actor, alter and dyadic sources. Estimating the magnitude of actor, alter and dyad nonindependence and their impact on the reliability of scores is an important step towards assuring quality data. Multilevel confirmatory factor analysis and the social relations model offer methods for quantifying the influence and estimating the reliability of multiple sources of clustered variance. The use of these methods is illustrated in the analysis of data gathered via a survey designed to quantify relational embeddedness in social network analyses.

Mobile Bodies, (Im)Mobile Beliefs? Religious Accord And Discord As Migratory Outcomes, Lily Kong, Orlando Woods Jun 2018

Mobile Bodies, (Im)Mobile Beliefs? Religious Accord And Discord As Migratory Outcomes, Lily Kong, Orlando Woods

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article advances a new understanding of the outcomes that arise from the movement and settlement of religion. These outcomes can range from religious accord to discord; or, from the full integration of migrant religions to inter-religious conflict. It identifies two axes that determine such outcomes. The first relates to the interplay between transnational religious agency and the strength of local religious structures. Harder structures are more likely to require migrant religious groups to make greater compromises to bring about situations of religious accord, while softer structures are less likely to do so. The second relates to the interplay between …

Absence Of Evidence Or Evidence Of Absence? A Discussion On Paleoepidemiology Of Neoplasms With Contributions From Two Portuguese Human Skeletal Reference Collections (19th–20th Century), Carina Marques, Vítor Matos, Tiago Costa, Albert Zink, Eugénia Cunha Jun 2018

Absence Of Evidence Or Evidence Of Absence? A Discussion On Paleoepidemiology Of Neoplasms With Contributions From Two Portuguese Human Skeletal Reference Collections (19th–20th Century), Carina Marques, Vítor Matos, Tiago Costa, Albert Zink, Eugénia Cunha

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Biological, sociocultural, demographic and environmental factors are major contributors to the contemporary burden of oncological diseases. Although cancer’s current epidemiological landscape is fairly well known, its past occurrence and history seem more obscure. In order to test the hypothesis that paleopathological diagnosis is an adequate measure of the prevalence of malignant neoplasms in human remains, 131 skeletons (78 females, 53 males, age-at-death range: 15–93 years) from Coimbra and Lisbon Identified Skeletal Collections, 19th/20th century (Portugal), were examined. The cause of death for all of the selected skeletons was a malignant neoplasm, as recorded in the collection’s documental files. Through the …

The Centrality Of Human Freedom In Dostoevsky And Huxley, Evelyn J. Hylton Jun 2018

The Centrality Of Human Freedom In Dostoevsky And Huxley, Evelyn J. Hylton

Masters Theses

Fyodor Dostoevsky learned the hard way that human beings need to be free. In a Siberian prison camp, a four-year period which would later inspire his semi-autobiographical prison memoir Notes from a Dead House, he was forced to come to terms with the realities of life under severe constraint and without the freedom for self-actualization, which convicted him of the dangers of the Westernized liberalism he once embraced. Dostoevsky’s transformed understanding of humanity and its need for individual freedom eventually matured to form the moral and philosophical foundations of his final novel, The Brothers Karamazov, whose support of the centrality …

Virtual Rituals: Community, Emotion, And Ritual In Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games—A Quantitative Test And Extension Of Structural Ritualization Theory, Joseph M. Simpson, J. D. Knottnerus, Michael J. Stern

Sociology Faculty Publications (Archived)

Millions of people worldwide immerse themselves in massive multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). These games generate large, diverse communities that engage in rituals within the game, completing missions or quests. What role do these MMORPG rituals play in commitment to these gaming communities? To address this question, we extend structural ritualization theory to explain the impact of ritual events and emotion on commitment to community in the game World of Warcraft. Our findings suggest that players focused on inanimate resources are less committed than players who focus on social aspects of the ritual events inside the game. We also find …

Negotiation Of Space In Garden City: Urban Securitization, Gender, Everydayness And Affective Encounters., Diana Magdy Jun 2018

Negotiation Of Space In Garden City: Urban Securitization, Gender, Everydayness And Affective Encounters., Diana Magdy

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is based on ethnographic research that explores the everyday lives of the group of people and the interplay of affect, gender and governmentality in Garden City as a securitized space. The research looks at the erection of walls, the ubiquity of barricades and checkpoints across Cairo post-2011 with focus on Garden City, which demonstrates the technologies of separation, domination, and control producing different spatial arrangement. Moreover, these techniques of control become an expression of power and the securitization of urban life as well as imposing a feeling of incarceration in the city. Nevertheless, the research goes beyond this …

Gender, Perceptual Factors, And Entrepreneurial Intention: Evidence From Egypt, Eman Tawfik El-Hadary Jun 2018

Gender, Perceptual Factors, And Entrepreneurial Intention: Evidence From Egypt, Eman Tawfik El-Hadary

Theses and Dissertations

In Egypt, women's total early-stage entrepreneurial activity is 3.7% out of female adult population coupled with one of the world's lowest women's economic participation rate. As the government is no longer the haven for women's jobs and the private sector is not filling the void, promoting entrepreneurship amongst women can prove effective in creating employment opportunities as well as empowering women with financial and social autonomy to allow them to become equal decision maker within the family and or household. In this research, the relationship between gender and entrepreneurial intention among non-entrepreneurs was investigated. The research shed light on the …

Spaces Of Escape: Sexuality In The Age Of The Internet., Miral A. Mahmoud Jun 2018

Spaces Of Escape: Sexuality In The Age Of The Internet., Miral A. Mahmoud

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an online ethnographic study of anonymous sexual interactions and expressions on the internet in twenty first century Egypt. I draw on how the internet is used as a space of freedom and resistance against the regulatory powers of state, society and religion, which decides how sexuality is expressed, discussed and practiced. I look at how a parallel sex culture is constructed online as opposed to the offline hegemonic, heteronormative sex culture. I observe sexual interactions and expressions in three anonymous internet platforms: an Egyptian chat room and two closed secret social media groups. I explore how alternative …

Domestic Cattle Breeds In Ancient Egypt From The Predynastic Period Through The End Of The Old Kingdom, Katherine Bateman Jun 2018

Domestic Cattle Breeds In Ancient Egypt From The Predynastic Period Through The End Of The Old Kingdom, Katherine Bateman

Theses and Dissertations

From the Predynastic Period through the end of the Old Kingdom phenotypically diverse cattle existed in Egypt. In the literature, cattle from this time period are currently identified by their horns: the longhorn, shorthorn, and hornless. Identifying cattle based on the size of their horns is an inaccurate classification method because horn length and shape varies within a single breed due to factors such as age, sex, and diet, and the words used to describe length (short, medium, and long) are often subjective. This study analyses representations, textual evidence, and physical remains of ancient Egyptian domesticated cattle and attempts to …

The Association Between Personality, Coping And Depressive Symptoms In Adult Patients With Chronic Pain, Reem Mohamed Ahmed Deif

Theses and Dissertations

As a rising concern in the medical and mental health fields, this study aims to examine predictors of depressive symptoms in a sample of Egyptian chronic pain patients in terms of coping styles and personality traits. Patients with chronic pain are believed to experience different stressors which include, but are not limited to, pain, disability, reduced productivity and financial difficulties. Such factors, in addition to various psychosocial factors, constitute the disease burden of chronic pain. This study examines the degree to which coping styles and personality traits can influence the disease outcome in terms of comorbid depressive symptoms. A total …

The Muslim Wives' Share In The Matrimonial Wealth: Between Theory And Practice, Yomna Amr Shaffei Jun 2018

The Muslim Wives' Share In The Matrimonial Wealth: Between Theory And Practice, Yomna Amr Shaffei

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims at responding to the problem of not monetizing women’s labor in the household through the financial Islamic right of al-Kadd wa al-Se’aya which acknowledges that women are economic partners in the matrimonial wealth in exchange to their labor. The right of al-Kadd wa al-Se’aya has its roots in the Qur’anic in verse 32 in Surat al-Nisaa’ which in one of its interpretations links labor to financial compensation, in the same manner as did Ibn Khaldun, Karl Marx, John Locke and Adam Smith. Furthermore, the thesis attempts to illustrate that the right of al-Kadd wa al-Se’aya was debated …

The study investigated the pronunciation of 47 male and female adult non-native speakers of English between the ages of 18 and 35 learning English in the general English program of a private institution affiliated with one of the major universities in Egypt. The students were recruited based …

Climate Change And Its Impact On Coastal Cities: A Case Study From Alexandria, Hend Ismail Jun 2018

Climate Change And Its Impact On Coastal Cities: A Case Study From Alexandria, Hend Ismail

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout history, coastal cities have been influential cities and attracted large population due to their rich resources, trade opportunities as well as eco-social and cultural transfer. Today, such a privilege has been put to question as coastal cities are facing high risk to be significantly damages if not swiped away as a result of Sea Level Rise (SLR) and floods resulting from the drastic climate change. As such, hundreds of millions of urban inhabitants in low and middleincome nations are at risk from direct and indirect negative impacts of climate change. Moreover, climate change when left undealt with may contribute …

Ethnographic Advocacy Against The Death Penalty, Jesse Cheng Jun 2018

Ethnographic Advocacy Against The Death Penalty, Jesse Cheng

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This article develops the concept of “ethnographic advocacy” to make sense of the humanizing, open‐ended knowledge practices involved in the defense of criminal defendants charged with capital murder. Drawing from anthropological fieldwork with well‐respected figures in the American capital defense bar, as well as my own professional experience as an investigator specializing in death penalty sentencing mitigation, I argue that effective advocacy for life occurs through qualitative knowledge practices that share notable methodological affinities with contemporary anthropological ethnography. The article concludes with a preliminary exploration of what the concept of ethnographic advocacy might reveal about academic anthropology's own advocative engagements.

Christianity espouses the dignity of all humanity and professes welcome for all to the communion of saints. Yet people with disabilities, especially those with more severe or profound physical or psychological disabilities, are largely invisible inside our houses of worship. This article examines the meaning of dignity and inclusion through the lenses of Christian anthropology, disabilities liberation theology, and the lived experience of persons with disabilities. It concludes with some suggestions on how to begin inclusion.

Global-Scale Comparisons Of Human Land Use: Developing Shared Terminology For Land-Use Practices Of Significance For Global Change., Kd Morrison, E Hammer, L Popova, Et Al Jun 2018

Global-Scale Comparisons Of Human Land Use: Developing Shared Terminology For Land-Use Practices Of Significance For Global Change., Kd Morrison, E Hammer, L Popova, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Although archaeological data are needed to understand the impacts of past human land use on the Earth system, synthesis is hampered by a lack of consistent categories. We develop hierarchical and scalable land-use classifications for use across the globe. Human land-use practices have been highly variable over the course of the Holocene, a diversity evident in the differentiated effects of human activity on land cover. Historically, agriculture was one of the most significant forms of land use, but even mobile hunter-gatherers transformed land cover through landscape-scale burning (Bliege Bird 2008). Livestock-keeping, plowing, irrigation, and the production of metal, ceramics, and …

Cultural Capital In Place-Making, C Mansfield Jun 2018

Cultural Capital In Place-Making, C Mansfield

Plymouth Business School

Innovative fieldwork research in cultural tourism is presented which is based around a detective novel set in a seaside town in France. The participants completed autoethnographic writing to provide insight into the active processes of value creation, experience creation, place-making and identity formation. The original research proposes a theory for the way that the literary language in the cultural artefact, in this case the realist novel, activates the tourist's cultural capital and thus affects behaviours. A new theoretical term is proposed, the toureme. The theory has applicability in other towns where novels are set and hence is useful for place-making. …
