The Effects Of Peer Observation On Teacher Intervention Integrity, Garrett D. Warrilow Jun 2018

The Effects Of Peer Observation On Teacher Intervention Integrity, Garrett D. Warrilow

Dissertations

The observer effect is a term used to describe a process during which an observer's behavior changes as they measure the behavior of another individual. The observer effect has been widely studied in organizational behavior management but has limited research with teachers in schools. The current study sought to use the observer effect as part of a teacher training package by evaluating the effects of peer observations on an observing teacher's implementation integrity of components of a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system. Participants were four middle school teachers of students in general education classrooms. The primary dependent variables …

The Subversion Of East And West In Orhan Pamuk’S Novel, The White Castle, Adile Aslan Almond Jun 2018

The Subversion Of East And West In Orhan Pamuk’S Novel, The White Castle, Adile Aslan Almond

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "The subversion of East and West in Orhan Pamuk's novel, The White Castle" Adile Aslan seeks to show how Orhan Pamuk plays with the theme of East versus West in his third novel The White Castle (1985), with the aim of de-essentializing both concepts. In 1928, Perso-Arabic script, in use for centuries as the main writing system in the Ottoman Empire, was replaced with Latin alphabet (accompanied by an intensive Turkification of the Ottoman language in the coming years) as a part of a larger modernization-Westernization project in the new nation state, a move which effectively …

Engage Engineering Students In Homework: Attribution Of Low Completion And Suggestions For Interventions, Wenshu Li, Richard M. Bennett, Taimi Olsen, Rachel Mccord Jun 2018

Engage Engineering Students In Homework: Attribution Of Low Completion And Suggestions For Interventions, Wenshu Li, Richard M. Bennett, Taimi Olsen, Rachel Mccord

Publications

Homework is an important out-of-class activity, crucial to student success in engineering courses. However, in a first-semester freshman engineering course, approximately one-fourth of students were completing less than 80% of the homework. The purpose of this study was to examine students' attribution of their low completion of homework and suggest corresponding interventions to help students with different attribution types. A qualitative approach was applied using semi-structured interviews for data collection. The interviewees were students who were on track to complete less than 80% of the homework. Students in the study attributed their low rates of completion to multiple factors. We …

Examining Large Game Utility And Transport Decisions By Fremont Hunters: A Study Of Faunal Bone From Wolf Village, Utah, Spencer Francis Lambert Jun 2018

Examining Large Game Utility And Transport Decisions By Fremont Hunters: A Study Of Faunal Bone From Wolf Village, Utah, Spencer Francis Lambert

Theses and Dissertations

This analysis of faunal bones from Wolf Village focuses on large game and its utility, as evidenced by what is known as the modified general utility index (MGUI). The MGUI proposes that bones at sites reflect transportation and butchering choices made by hunters at kill-butchering sites. According to the assumptions associated with the MGUI, hunters should select animal portions with high food value. The MGUI has been used in Fremont archaeology to provide a rough measure of site function. The expectation is that faunal bones would accompany the prized cuts of large game meat at habitation sites – and the …

Presence And Diversity Of Mammals Across Microhábitats In San Luis, Monteverde, Costa Rica, June 2018, Liesel Davis Jun 2018

Presence And Diversity Of Mammals Across Microhábitats In San Luis, Monteverde, Costa Rica, June 2018, Liesel Davis

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The transformation from natural to human-dominated landscapes is occurring rapidly throughout much of the world. In San Luis, Costa Rica, undisturbed forest land has been converted into farmland, introducing crops for agriculture and free-ranging domestic animals. The aim of this study was to observe how relative local mammal abundance has been impacted by these anthropological factors. I sampled three locations in San Luis: a coffee plantation (Café Bella Tica), a farm containing domestic animals (Marco Marín’s farm), and a forest microhabitat. To collect data, I used trail transects, miscellaneous observations, Sherman rodent traps, and camera traps over the course of …

Dental Measurements Do Not Diagnose Modern Artiodactyl Species: Implications For The Systematics Of Merycoidodontoidea, Meaghan M. Emery-Wetherell, Edward Byrd Davis Jun 2018

Dental Measurements Do Not Diagnose Modern Artiodactyl Species: Implications For The Systematics Of Merycoidodontoidea, Meaghan M. Emery-Wetherell, Edward Byrd Davis

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Though dental measurements are frequently used to diagnose the fossil species of Merycoidodontoidea and other extinct artiodactyls, the effective diagnosis of modern artiodactyl taxa via dental measurements has not been extensively tested. Our study finds that variation in artiodactyl dentition is generally higher than in primates, carnivores, rodents and even elephants, with molar coefficients of variation ranging up to 18% (Camelus bactrianus), and that dental measurements poorly diagnose modern artiodactyls via discriminant function analysis, adjusted t -tests on coefficients of variation, or finite mixture analysis. The higher-than-expected coefficients of variation for artiodactyls imply that some fossil taxa may …

The Political Logic Of Destituent Power: Time, Subjectivity, And Revolutionary Violence, Kieran Aarons Jun 2018

The Political Logic Of Destituent Power: Time, Subjectivity, And Revolutionary Violence, Kieran Aarons

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a study of the relation between time, subjectivity, and violence in revolutionary social transformation. It argues that Giorgio Agamben's theory of 'destituent power' offers a compelling reconception of the meaning and function of revolutionary violence, whose originality is bound up in the theory of time from which it cannot be dissociated. The thesis demonstrates that development of this theory required that Agamben revise his earlier conception of political violence and revolutionary time. While the definition of revolutionary violence remains constant throughout his work (as 'the restoration of participation in the creation of the world'), the nature and …

Construction Of A Tropical Cyclone Size Dataset Using Retroactive Analysis Data With A Damage Application, Derek Trent Thompson Jun 2018

Construction Of A Tropical Cyclone Size Dataset Using Retroactive Analysis Data With A Damage Application, Derek Trent Thompson

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis introduces a new tropical cyclone (TC) size dataset. Using the radius of the outermost closed isobar (ROCI) as the size metric of focus, a comprehensive record of TC size at landfall was constructed for tropical storms and hurricanes that made landfall in the United States along the East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico. The ROCI information was derived from mean sea level pressure maps generated using the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis I dataset over a 69-year period (1948 – 2016). Construction of the dataset involved using two methodologies, one based on hourly interpolated HURDAT2 best tracks and the …

Ninth Island, Las Vegas: Hawaiian Gaming Tourism And The California Hotel, Cynthia Van Gilder, Dana Herrera

Occasional Papers

Many people do not realize that Las Vegas, Nevada is home to a unique niche tourism: it is overwhelmingly the vacation destination of choice for residents of the state of Hawai’i, even affectionately termed the “Ninth Island.” Many credit the strong Hawaiian interest in Las Vegas to the fact that there is no legal gaming in the state of Hawai’i, however, data indicates that it is not just the opportunity to gamble that bring Hawaiian tourists here, but also the specifc amenities and experience offered at one particular hotel and casino, The California Hotel. Nicknamed “The Cal,” this establishment is …

“That's How She Talks”: Animating Text Message Evidence In The Sexual Assault Trial, Heather R. Hlavka, Sameena A. Mulla

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This ethnographic study of criminal sexual assault adjudication shows how prosecutors, defense attorneys, and witnesses animate text message evidence. In contrast to other forms of courtroom testimony, text messages function as multiauthored representations of recorded correspondence in the past. Attorneys and witnesses animate texts authored by or said to characterize persons represented at trial. By whom and how the texts are animated shapes trial processes. Through a detailed comparative case analysis of two Milwaukee, WI, sexual assault trials, this article attends to the process by which text messages are said to personify or characterize authors’ meaning and intent. This animation …

Using A Model To Design Activity-Based Educational Experiences To Improve Cultural Competency Among Graduate Students, Yeon Bai, Kathleen D. Bauer Jun 2018

Using A Model To Design Activity-Based Educational Experiences To Improve Cultural Competency Among Graduate Students, Yeon Bai, Kathleen D. Bauer

Department of Nutrition and Food Studies Scholarship and Creative Works

To improve the cultural competency of 34 students participating in graduate nutrition counseling classes, the Campinha-Bacote Model of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Health Care Services was used to design, implement, and evaluate counseling classes. Each assignment and activity addressed one or more of the five constructs of the model, i.e., knowledge, skill, desire, encounters, and awareness. A repeated measure ANOVA evaluated pre- and post-test cultural competence scores (Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence among Healthcare Professionals). The overall cultural competence score significantly improved (p < 0.001) from “culturally aware” (68.7 at pre-test) to “culturally competent” (78.7 at post-test). Students significantly improved (p < 0.001) in four constructs of the model including awareness, knowledge, skill, and encounter. Factor analysis indicated that course activities accounted for 83.2% and course assignments accounted for 74.6% of the total variance of cultural competence. An activity-based counseling course encouraging self-evaluation and reflection and addressing Model constructs significantly improved the cultural competence of students. As class activities and assignments aligned well with the Campinha-Bacote Model constructs, the findings of this study can help guide health educators to design effective cultural competence training and education programs.

The Image Betrays More Than It Reveals: Inter(Ior) Views From Women Of Color On Identity And Social And Academic Experiences In Higher Education, Amy Hauenstein Jun 2018

The Image Betrays More Than It Reveals: Inter(Ior) Views From Women Of Color On Identity And Social And Academic Experiences In Higher Education, Amy Hauenstein

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation proposes a further conceptualization of intersectional identity as a fundamental topic in education reform research. Overlaying the theoretical lenses of Critical Race Theory and intersectionality, a modified narrative inquiry methodology was used to investigate the self-perceived identities among seven women of color, who are alumnae of an all-girls secondary school, in their current context of higher education. Analysis of data from in-depth, open-ended interviews, a focus group interview, and a fictional writing sample illuminated the role of meaning-making capacity in determining the extent to which contextual influences shape self-perceptions of gender, race, and other emergent identities at their …

Korean–English Bilingual Sibling Interactions And Socialization, Hyonsuk Cho Jun 2018

Korean–English Bilingual Sibling Interactions And Socialization, Hyonsuk Cho

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

This paper examines how a pair of Korean–American siblings interact and socialize and how their interactions change over time as the younger sibling starts to go to an English-speaking preschool. A 7-year-old Korean–English bilingual girl and her 3-year-old sister were observed in their home over 23 visits within a year. Their discourse data, including 33 h of audio-recordings, were analyzed from the Language Socialization perspective. The older sibling’s authority derived from the age-based Korean family hierarchy inevitably played a role in creating shared benefits in the bilingual sibling relationship. After the younger sibling began to speak English, there were noticeable …

"Understanding Lgbtq+ Intimate Partner Violence & Challenges In, Dr. Juanita Yates

Dissertations

This research project is a focus on Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) within LGBTQ+

community and the challenges associated with seeking family support. IPV is defined as a violent

or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving the violent abuse of an intimate spouse

or partner. However, IPV can happen on the street, in one’s home or even in a public place. Those

exposed to IPV can be children, men and women. IPV is a prevalent issue in our society (Bright

2008). According to Ristock (2005), violence in LGBTQ+ relationships may be referred to as

partner violence, relationship violence, or LGBTQ+ …

Seasonal Round Travel Routes And The Cost Of Mobility, Evan Mills Jun 2018

Seasonal Round Travel Routes And The Cost Of Mobility, Evan Mills

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

In 1985 a settlement and subsistence model of seasonal round mobility was proposed by Statistical Research, Inc. This model proposed four travel routes used by the Late Prehistoric Serrano to access the higher elevation village site known as Rock Camp to gather acorns and pinyon nuts in the fall. This research investigates the proposed routes, as well as an additional route, for energy efficiency and archaeological evidence of use in prehistory. Data collection involved using experimental methods designed to gather controlled physiological data for evaluating the efficiency of traveling each route. Archaeological sites present on the travel routes and within …

The Gods Have Taken Thought For Them: Syncretic Animal Symbolism In Medieval European Magic, Solange Nicole Kiehlbauch Jun 2018

The Gods Have Taken Thought For Them: Syncretic Animal Symbolism In Medieval European Magic, Solange Nicole Kiehlbauch

Master's Theses

This thesis investigates syncretic animal symbolism within medieval European occult systems. The major question that this work seeks to answer is: what does the ubiquity and importance of magical animals and animal magic reveal about overarching medieval perceptions of the world? In response, I utilize the emerging subfield of Animal History as a theoretical framework to draw attention to an understudied yet highly relevant aspect of occult theory and practice. This work argues that medieval Europeans lived in a fundamentally “enchanted” world compared to our modern age, where the permeable boundaries between physical and spiritual planes imbued nature and its …

African American High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Mathematics And Perceptions Of Extant Culturally Relevant Pedagogy And Ethnomathematics, Brice Le Anthony Scott Jun 2018

African American High School Students’ Attitudes Toward Mathematics And Perceptions Of Extant Culturally Relevant Pedagogy And Ethnomathematics, Brice Le Anthony Scott

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

African American students' severe underachievement in mathematics in comparison to their peers has been framed as an achievement gap that continues to widen despite the efforts of many education scholars and leaders. Throughout history in the United States, mathematics education has been designed, developed, and delivered within a Eurocentric philosophy. Consequently, African American students have been at a systemic disadvantage in terms of perceiving the cultural relevance of mathematics; which has served as a detriment to their academic success. By merging ethnomathematics and culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP) into a theoretical framework, this study investigates these issues and proposes a shift …

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions And Attitudes Toward Mental Health Within The Prison System, Alexandra Rose Serafini Jun 2018

Correctional Officers’ Perceptions And Attitudes Toward Mental Health Within The Prison System, Alexandra Rose Serafini

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This research explored correction officers’ perceptions and attitudes in relation to inmates with mental health issues. In a qualitative fashion, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five correction officers in Southern California (N = 5) during the Winter 2018 Quarter. Using thematic analysis, this study identified six major themes from the interview data: mental health has remained a prominent issue within the prison population; correction officers were fairly knowledgeable about mental health; correction officers perceived themselves as having to play a limited role in the rehabilitation of inmates with mental health problems; constant prompts in daily activities and medication management were …

The In-Betweens Of Lifeworlds: Double Clicks Of Becoming-Entrepreneurial, Ahmed Amin Jun 2018

The In-Betweens Of Lifeworlds: Double Clicks Of Becoming-Entrepreneurial, Ahmed Amin

Theses and Dissertations

In this project, I de-naturalize dynamics of the establishment of social entrepreneurship as a political project that has on the underside of it after-modern passions and desires with an affinity to the European Renaissance and the West as, according to Michel-Rolph Trouillot, “a project not a place, a multi-layered enterprise in transparent universality” (Trouillot, 1991: 32). I purse de-naturalization through de-scription. I de-scribe and trace relationships and inter-actions that are made and re-made in the name of social entrepreneurship. In those very inter-actions, entrepreneurial bodies are re-assembled. According to Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari (1987), “we know nothing about a …

The Telling Is Political & Intentional: Resistance Through Testimonio For Latinas In Higher Education, Fabiola Rosiles Jun 2018

The Telling Is Political & Intentional: Resistance Through Testimonio For Latinas In Higher Education, Fabiola Rosiles

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the challenges, difficulties, and triumphs of Latinas in higher education-the motivation of our families, the feelings of guilt and alienation, and the experiences of discrimination and marginalization. The analysis is developed through a close reading of the 22 testimonies in Jessica De Leon's book entitled Wise Latinas. The argument is that it is important to not only acknowledge the experiences of Latinas in higher education, but to also recognize how the issues, structures, and barriers are tied to larger structures of power and oppression. At the same time, the strategies of resistance and resilience are also grounded …

Las Curanderas De La Herida Abierta: How Online Communities Of Women Of Color Are Challenging Coloniality, Aracelis Sanchez

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Using Facebook and Instagram pages, women of color create virtual communities for epistemological transformations and community healing. In this thesis, I show that online communities of women of color constitute a decolonial feminist virtual space that serves as a site of knowledge production. I argue that these online communities can be conceptualized as a decolonial project existing and expanding from online spaces to public places and characterized by a deliberate rejection of anti-blackness, a critique of the capitalist/colonial/imperial world system, and liberating conceptions of sexuality and gender. I focus on Latina Rebels, Xicanisma, and Lindas, Libres pero Chingonas in order …

A Room With A View: Local Knowledge And Tourism Entrepreneurship In An Unlikely Indonesian Locale, Kathleen M. Adams, Dirk Sandarupa Jun 2018

A Room With A View: Local Knowledge And Tourism Entrepreneurship In An Unlikely Indonesian Locale, Kathleen M. Adams, Dirk Sandarupa

Anthropology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article highlights the understudied role of local knowledge in contributing to the resilience of small-scale entrepreneurial tourism businesses in touristically-unpredictable times. Drawing on a micro-case study of a South Sulawesi (Indonesia) tourist-oriented restaurant-hotel that has thrived despite tourism’s ebbs and flows of tourism, we suggest that greater attention to the ways in which successful small-scale tourism entrepreneurs draw on local wisdom can help identify additional foundations for building resilience strategies. In spotlighting local knowledge as an under-recognized resource, this article also speaks to recent calls for the decolonization of tourism studies.
