Veratrum californicum is a rich source of steroidal alkaloids such as cyclopamine, a known inhibitor of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway. Here we provide a detailed analysis of the alkaloid composition of V. californicum by plant part through quantitative analysis of cyclopamine, veratramine, muldamine and isorubijervine in the leaf, stem and root/rhizome of the plant. To determine whether additional alkaloids in the extracts contribute to Hh signaling inhibition, the concentrations of these four alkaloids present in extracts were replicated using commercially available standards, followed by comparison of extracts to alkaloid standard mixtures for inhibition of Hh signaling using Shh-Light II …

Resting-State Functional Connectivity In Youth With Gender Dysphoria, Felix L. Garcia
Resting-State Functional Connectivity In Youth With Gender Dysphoria, Felix L. Garcia
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Current developmental models of gender identity and gender dysphoria (GD) lack sex-specific profiles of brain function that differentiate between typically-developing and cross-gender identified youth, as postulated by models like the unified theory of the origins of sex differences (Arnold, 2009) and the neurobiological theory of the origins of transsexuality (Swaab & Garcia-Falgueras, 2009). Previously, investigators have used brain imaging modalities such as Resting-State functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (R-fMRI) to demonstrate differences in resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) between typically-developing male and female youth, and between typically-developing and GID-diagnosed youth. In the present pilot study, I used R-fMRI to investigate differences in …

Collecting personal data is a feature of daily life. Businesses, advertisers, agencies, and law enforcement amass massive reservoirs of our personal data. This state of affairs—what I am calling the “collection imperative”—is justified in the name of efficiency, convenience, and security. The unbridled collection of personal data, meanwhile, leads to abuses. Public and private entities have disproportionate power over individuals and groups whose information they have amassed. Nowhere is that power disparity more evident than for the state’s surveillance of the indigent. Poor mothers, in particular, have vanishingly little privacy. Whether or not poor mothers receive subsidized prenatal care, the …

Proton Pump Inhibitor Use As A Risk Factor For Enterobacteriaceal Infection: A Case-Control Study, R Cunningham, L Jones, Dg Enki, R Tischhauser
Peninsula Medical School
Background Gastric acid suppressants increase the risk of gastroenteritis by allowing ingested pathogens to survive passage through the stomach. It is not known whether the same mechanism affects transmission of Enterobacteriaceae. A case–control study was undertaken to answer this question. Aim To determine whether use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) increases the risk of infection with Enterobacteriaceae in hospital patients. Methods Retrospective case–control study in a teaching hospital in South West England. Cases were 126 patients infected with extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae between April 2014 and March 2015. Use of PPIs, H2 receptor antagonists or antacids at the time of …

"The book of Jonah records one of the most provocative stories in the Bible. It contrasts God’s and humans’ attitudes toward sinners.1 It is a story of God’s love and compassion that stands in contrast to human indifference, condemnation, and bigotry toward wayward sinners who are in need of salvation. Its primary purpose was to teach Israel that God’s love is for all people, not just for Israel. The book is also for God’s people throughout history who find it hard to accept the truth that no person is out of the reach of God’s love and salvation."

One of the major issues in plant breeding is the occurrence of genotype × environment (GE) interaction. Several models have been created to understand this phenomenon and explore it. In the genomic era, several models were employed to improve selection by using markers and account for GE interaction simultaneously. Some of these models use special genetic covariance matrices. In addition, the scale of multi-environment trials is getting larger, and this increases the computational challenges. In this context, we propose an R package that, in general, allows building GE genomic covariance matrices and fitting linear mixed models, in particular, to a …

Aflatoxin contaminates agricultural commodities, plants or animal-derived food, in warm and humid conditions primarily in tropical countries such as the Philippines. Although the type and degree of contamination are dependent on its concentration, its effect becomes critical when biomagnified. In this study, a rapid, simple, and portable detection was developed. A smart-device sensor was used to measure the pH of the samples with aflatoxin and compared it with the pH of pure samples. Concentrations in parts per billion (ppb) were calculated for each of the samples from the obtained pH readings; Cyclic voltammetry was also conducted to further study the …

Although there have been many key advancements in connecting text and perception, computer- generated image captions still lack common sense. As a first step towards constraining these perception mechanisms to commonsense judgment, we have developed reasonableness monitors: a wrapper interface that can explain if the descriptive output of an opaque deep neural network is plausible. These monitor a standalone system that uses careful dependency tracking, commonsense knowledge, and conceptual primitives to explain a perceived scene description to be reasonable or not. If such an explanation cannot be made, it is evidence that something unreasonable has been perceived. The development of …

Strains of red fox (Vulpes vulpes) with markedly different behavioural phenotypes have been developed in the famous long-term selective breeding programme known as the Russian farm-fox experiment. Here we sequenced and assembled the red fox genome and re-sequenced a subset of foxes from the tame, aggressive and conventional farm-bred populations to identify genomic regions associated with the response to selection for behaviour. Analysis of the re-sequenced genomes identified 103 regions with either significantly decreased heterozygosity in one of the three populations or increased divergence between the populations. A strong positional candidate gene for tame behaviour was highlighted: SorCS1, which encodes …

Oxidative damage is implicated in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The dry form of AMD (geographic atrophy) is characterized by loss of RPE, photoreceptors, and macular pigments. The cumulative effects of oxidative stress impact mitochondrial function in RPE. In Sod2flox/floxVMD2-cre mice, the RPE specific deletion of Sod2, the gene for mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD), leads to elevated oxidative stress in retina and RPE, and causes changes in the RPE and underlying Bruch’s membrane that share some features of AMD. This study tested the hypothesis that zeaxanthin supplementation would reduce oxidative stress and preserve RPE …

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States, affecting approximately 11 million patients. AMD is caused primarily by an upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). In recent years, aflibercept injections have been used to combat VEGF. However, this treatment requires frequent intravitreal injections, leading to low patient compliance and several adverse side effects including scarring, increased intraocular pressure, and retinal detachment. Polymeric nanoparticles have demonstrated the ability to deliver a sustained release of drug, thereby reducing the necessary injection frequency. Aflibercept (AFL) was encapsulated in poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) …

Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are a form of aggregate Extracellular Matrix (ECM) in the brain. Recent evidence suggests that the postnatal deposition of PNNs may play an active role in regulating neuroplasticity and, potentially, neurological disorders. Observations of high levels of PNNs expression around somas, proximal dendrites, and axon initial segments of a subtype of neurons have also led to proposals that PNNs may modulate the intrinsic properties of the neurons they ensheathe. While high levels of PNNs are postnatally expressed throughout the neocortex, it is still unclear how they impact the neuronal physiology of the many classes and subtypes of …
The Effects Of Cortisol, Stress And Rearing Temperature On Black Sea Bass (Centropristis Striata) Sex Differentiation, Kelsie A. Miller
The Effects Of Cortisol, Stress And Rearing Temperature On Black Sea Bass (Centropristis Striata) Sex Differentiation, Kelsie A. Miller
Master's Theses and Capstones
Teleosts exhibit some of the most diverse array of reproductive strategies of all vertebrates, including gonochorism and hermaphroditism. Black sea bass (BSB; Centropristis striata) are protogynous hermaphrodites that undergo sex change between 2-6 years of age in the wild. Transition is initiated earlier in captivity and a greater percentage of fish differentiate directly as males. Captivity and environmental factors, such as temperature, can activate a stress response in fish that can lead to increased production of cortisol, the primary glucocorticoid released following a stressor. Cortisol treatment during sensitive developmental periods has been shown to have masculinizing effects on many teleost …

Master Of Its Own Case: Eeoc Investigations After Issuing A Right-To-Sue Notice, Eric E. Petry
University of Chicago Law Review
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing the full arsenal of federal employment discrimination laws. But in addition to vindicating the rights of employment discrimination victims, the EEOC also serves as a gatekeeper to screen claims before they get to court. As part of that gatekeeping function, Congress requires that individuals alleging employment discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 must obtain permission from the EEOC before they can bring legal action on their own.
Title VII’s text leaves the EEOC’s role after issuing a right-to-sue notice ambiguous. Despite this ambiguity, or perhaps …
Historic Look On Color Theory, Steele R. Stokley
Historic Look On Color Theory, Steele R. Stokley
Honors Theses - Providence Campus
The science of color is called chromatics, colorimetry, or color science. This field of science includes the perception of color by the human eye, origin of colors, art theory, therapy, the psychics of electromagnetic radiation, and effects on the brain (Azeemi). Experts throughout time have desired to decipher the composition of color to explain how and why humans are able to see colors in order to use them in numerous disciplines; from scientific to artistic. While color has been studied since ancient times, the technical workings and the modern understandings of color theory are difficult to comprehend, and one wishes …

Two speleothem stable isotope records from East-Central Europe demonstrate that Greenland Stadial 12 (GS12) and GS10—at 44.3–43.3 and 40.8–40.2 ka—were prominent intervals of cold and arid conditions. GS12, GS11, and GS10 are coeval with a regional pattern of culturally (near-)sterile layers within Europe’s diachronous archeologic transition from Neanderthals to modern human Aurignacian. Sterile layers coeval with GS12 precede the Aurignacian throughout the middle and upper Danube region. In some records from the northern Iberian Peninsula, such layers are coeval with GS11 and separate the Châtelperronian from the Aurignacian. Sterile layers preceding the Aurignacian in the remaining Châtelperronian domain are coeval …
