Perceptions Of Commuter Students And Faculty: A Mixed Methods Study On Commuter Student Retention, Julie A. Wengert Sep 2018

Perceptions Of Commuter Students And Faculty: A Mixed Methods Study On Commuter Student Retention, Julie A. Wengert

Dissertations

College student success outcomes have become increasingly significant to many stakeholders as student attrition has proven costly for students, institutions of higher education, and the economy (Foss, Foss, Paynton, & Hahn, 2014; Jobe & Lenio, 2014). Historically, a positive relationship between college students who live on-campus and retention has been found (Astin, 1993; Bronkema & Bowman, 2017; Chickering, 1974; Pike & Kuh, 2005; Schudde, 2011; Soria & Taylor Jr., 2016; Walsh & Robinson Kurpius, 2016). However, commuter students now make up most of the current college student population (Skomsvold, 2014). The purpose of this mixed methods study was to advance …

C.S. Lewis And The True Myth: A Reconciliation Of Theology, Philosophy, And Mythology, Courage Lowrance Sep 2018

C.S. Lewis And The True Myth: A Reconciliation Of Theology, Philosophy, And Mythology, Courage Lowrance

Masters Theses

C.S. Lewis was both a student of pagan philosophy and mythology and a Christian. He never was divided between these two pursuits in his life, though he gave the latter its proper priority. What allowed Lewis to keep this balance was his idea of the gospel as the True Myth, an idea that helped lead to his conversion and remained at the core of his thinking throughout his life. By this idea of True Myth, Lewis was able to not only unite the pagan myths to Christian truth, but also the rest of human thought as well. Thus, in order …

We have shown that antagomiR inhibition of miRNA miR-21 and miR-196b activity is sufficient to ablate MLL-AF9 leukemia stem cells (LSC) in vivo. Here, we used an shRNA screening approach to mimic miRNA activity on experimentally verified miR-196b targets to identify functionally important and therapeutically relevant pathways downstream of oncogenic miRNA in MLL-r AML. We found Cdkn1b (p27Kip1) is a direct miR-196b target whose repression enhanced an embryonic stem cell–like signature associated with decreased leukemia latency and increased numbers of leukemia stem cells in vivo. Conversely, elevation of p27Kip1 significantly reduced MLL-r leukemia self-renewal, promoted monocytic differentiation …

Palatable Food Dampens The Long-Term Behavioral And Endocrine Effects Of Juvenile Stressor Exposure But May Also Provoke Metabolic Syndrome In Rats, Eliza Fatima Ali, Jennifer Christine Mackay, Samantha Graitson, Jonathan Stewart James, Christian Cayer, Marie-Claude Audet, Pamela Kent, Alfonso Abizaid, Zul Premji

Brain and Mind Institute

The juvenile period is marked by a reorganization and growth of important brain regions including structures associating with reward seeking behaviors such as the nucleus accumbens (NA) and prefrontal cortex (PFC). These changes are impacted by stressors during the juvenile period and may lead to a predisposition to stress induced psychopathology and abnormal development of brain reward systems. Like in humans, adult rodents engage certain coping mechanisms such as increases in the consumption of calorie-rich palatable foods to reduce stress, but this behavior can lead to obesity and metabolic disorders. In this study, we examined whether stressors during the juvenile …

Salty Fertile Lakes: How Salinization And Eutrophication Alter The Structure Of Freshwater Communities, Lovisa Lind, Matthew S. Schuler, William D. Hintz, Aaron B. Stoler, Devin K. Jones, Brian M. Mattes, Rick A. Relyea Sep 2018

Salty Fertile Lakes: How Salinization And Eutrophication Alter The Structure Of Freshwater Communities, Lovisa Lind, Matthew S. Schuler, William D. Hintz, Aaron B. Stoler, Devin K. Jones, Brian M. Mattes, Rick A. Relyea

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

The quality of freshwater ecosystems is decreasing worldwide because of anthropogenic activities. For example, nutrient over‐enrichment associated with agricultural, urban, and industrial development has led to an acceleration of primary production, or eutrophication. Additionally, in northern areas, deicing salts that are an evolutionary novel stressor to freshwater ecosystems have caused chloride levels of many freshwaters to exceed thresholds established for environmental protection. Even if excess nutrients and road deicing salts often contaminate freshwaters at the same time, the combined effects of eutrophication and salinization on freshwater communities are unknown. Thus by using outdoor mesocosms, we investigated the potentially interactive effects …

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of memory impairment in general population. The serotonin hypothesis provides a target model for the treatment of depression and depression-associated memory loss. 5-HT-1B receptor is suggested as a potential candidate in the pathophysiology of depressive illness. Dysfunction of 5-HT-1B receptors has been observed previously in depressive patients. Zolmitriptan, 5-HT-1B agonist is clinically recommended for the treatment of migraine. However, in present study this drug was tested as a potential treatment for depression and associated memory loss by altering the serotonergic function at receptor level. Rats (n=24) were equally divided into unstressed and …

Desasosiego En La Ciudad Neoliberal: Reflexiones En Torno A La Poesía Peruana Urbana Contemporánea, Ilka Kressner

Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores the presentation of everyday urban spaces marked by neoliberal practices in a …

An Observed Instance Of Cooper’S Hawk (Accipiter Cooperii) Predation On A Chicken In An Urban Environment, Don Arp Jr.

Nebraska Bird Review

On February 21, 2015, I had the opportunity to observe a Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) attack, kill, and feed on a chicken in an urban environment.

The attack occurred around 1:10 p.m. on February 21, 2015, in Lincoln, Nebraska, in a residential area that is often referred to as the Bethany neighborhood. With large mature trees and landscape hedges, it provided excellent cover for the hawk’s attack. Weather data for that day show a low temperature of 18 degrees Fahrenheit and a high temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit. There was residual snow cover in some areas, as Lincoln had experienced …

Public Perceptions Of Mountain Lake Fisheries Management In National Parks, Ariana M. Chiapella, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Angela L. Strecker Sep 2018

Public Perceptions Of Mountain Lake Fisheries Management In National Parks, Ariana M. Chiapella, Max Nielsen-Pincus, Angela L. Strecker

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The legacy of fish stocking in mountain lake ecosystems has left behind a challenge for land managers around the globe. In the US and Canada, historically fishless mountain lakes have been stocked with trout for over a century. These non-native trout have cascading ecosystem effects, and can accumulate atmospherically deposited contaminants. While the negative impacts of stocking in these ecosystems have become increasingly apparent, wilderness fishing has garnered cultural value in the angling community. As a result, public lands managers are left with conflicting priorities. National park managers across the western US are actively trying to reconcile the cultural and …

Distinctive Structural And Molecular Features Of Myelinated Inhibitory Axons In Human Neocortex., Kristina D Micheva, Edward F Chang, Alissa L Nana, William W Seeley, Jonathan T Ting, Charles Cobbs, Ed Lein, Stephen J Smith, Richard J Weinberg, Daniel V Madison

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Numerous types of inhibitory neurons sculpt the performance of human neocortical circuits, with each type exhibiting a constellation of subcellular phenotypic features in support of its specialized functions. Axonal myelination has been absent among the characteristics used to distinguish inhibitory neuron types; in fact, very little is known about myelinated inhibitory axons in human neocortex. Here, using array tomography to analyze samples of neurosurgically excised human neocortex, we show that inhibitory myelinated axons originate predominantly from parvalbumin-containing interneurons. Compared to myelinated excitatory axons, they have higher neurofilament and lower microtubule content, shorter nodes of Ranvier, and more myelin basic protein …

Wildlife Trafficking And Poaching: Contemporary Context And Dynamics For Security Cooperation And Military Assistance, Christopher Jasparro Sep 2018

Wildlife Trafficking And Poaching: Contemporary Context And Dynamics For Security Cooperation And Military Assistance, Christopher Jasparro

CIWAG Case Studies

Wildlife Trafficking and Poaching: Contemporary Context and Dynamics for Security Cooperation and Military Assistance, by Dr. Christopher Jasparro, examines the impact wildlife crime has played on exacerbating the delicate security situation in Africa, and the effectiveness of the security cooperation and assistance programs that have formed as a result. Wildlife crime has become a significant international security issue as poaching is used to fund terrorism, drug trades, and other illicit activities that destabilize local African governments and endanger vulnerable species. Wildlife crime is complex and varied with no individual solution. To combat this growing issue, plans and programs carefully …

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Used To Predict Soybean Seed Germination And Vigour, Maythem Al-Amery, Robert L. Geneve, Mauricio F. Sanches, Paul R. Armstrong, Elizabeth B. Maghirang, Chad Lee, Roberval D. Vieira, David F. Hildebrand

Horticulture Faculty Publications

Rapid, non-destructive methods for measuring seed germination and vigour are valuable. Standard germination and seed vigour were determined using 81 soybean seed lots. From these data, seed lots were separated into high and low germinating seed lots as well as high, medium and low vigour seed lots. Near-infrared spectra (950–1650 nm) were collected for training and validation samples for each seed category and used to create partial least squares (PLS) prediction models. For both germination and vigour, qualitative models provided better discrimination of high and low performing seed lots compared with quantitative models. The qualitative germination prediction models correctly identified …

Achieving The Promise Of Integration In Social-Ecological Research: A Review And Prospectus, Neil Carter Sep 2018

Achieving The Promise Of Integration In Social-Ecological Research: A Review And Prospectus, Neil Carter

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

An integrated understanding of both social and ecological aspects of environmental issues is essential to address pressing sustainability challenges. An integrated social-ecological systems perspective is purported to provide a better understanding of the complex relationships between humans and nature. Despite a threefold increase in the amount of social-ecological research published between 2010 and 2015, it is unclear whether these approaches have been truly integrative. We conducted a systematic literature review to investigate the conceptual, methodological, disciplinary, and functional aspects of social-ecological integration. In general, we found that overall integration is still lacking in social-ecological research. Some social variables deemed important …

Occupational Stress And Risk For Parkinson's Disease: A Nationwide Cohort Study, Johanna Sieurin, Ross Andel, Annika Tillander, Elise G. Valdes, Nancy L. Pederson, Karin Wirdefeldt Sep 2018

Occupational Stress And Risk For Parkinson's Disease: A Nationwide Cohort Study, Johanna Sieurin, Ross Andel, Annika Tillander, Elise G. Valdes, Nancy L. Pederson, Karin Wirdefeldt

Aging Studies Faculty Publications

Background: Stress has been suggested as a contributing factor in the etiology of Parkinson's Disease (PD), but epidemiological evidence is sparse.

Objective: The objective of this study was to explore the association between occupational stress according to the job demands‐control model and the risk for PD.

Methods: We conducted a population‐based cohort study with 2,544,748 Swedes born 1920 to 1950 who had an occupation reported in the population and housing censuses in 1980 or, if missing, in 1970. Job demands and control were measured using a job‐exposure matrix. Incident PD cases were identified using Swedish national health registers from 1987 …

The Structure, Limits, And Drivers Of Daphnid Diversity, Richard Joseph Knecht Sep 2018

The Structure, Limits, And Drivers Of Daphnid Diversity, Richard Joseph Knecht

Master's Theses and Capstones

In 1961 Hutchinson proposed the “Paradox of the Plankton” questioning how sympatric planktonic species can coexist for long periods of time while seemingly avoiding the competitive exclusion principle. As this ‘paradox’ became a focus of inquiry, one researcher conducted a 2-year study (1961-1962; Tappa 1965) on Aziscohos Lake Daphnia to address the question. While the study did not solve the enigma, it provided a detailed record of the dynamics and interactions of six coexisting species. Aziscohos Lake and its zooplankton have not been studied since. This study revisits the ‘paradox of the plankton’ by establishing the dynamics of extant Daphnid …

The Tallgrass Prairie Soundscape; Employing An Ecoacoustic Approach To Understand Grassland Response To Prescribed Burns And The Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Nechrophilous Invertebrate Communities, Sarah Dodgin Sep 2018

The Tallgrass Prairie Soundscape; Employing An Ecoacoustic Approach To Understand Grassland Response To Prescribed Burns And The Spatial And Temporal Patterns Of Nechrophilous Invertebrate Communities, Sarah Dodgin

Master's Theses and Capstones

Tallgrass prairies are rapidly vanishing biodiversity hotspots for native and endemic species, yet little is known regarding how spatial and temporal variation of prairie soundscapes relates to seasonal changes, disturbance patterns and biological communities. Ecoacoustics, the study of environmental sounds using passive acoustics as a non-invasive tool for investigating ecological complexity, allows for long-term data to be captured without disrupting biological communities. Two studies were carried out by employing ecoacoustic methodology to study grassland carrion food webs and to capture the phenology of a grassland soundscape following a prescribed burn. Both studies were conducted at the Nature Conservancy’s Tallgrass Prairie …

In Vitro Growth Of Osteoblasts On Poly Lactic-Co-Glycolic Acid Scaffolds Created Via Gas Foaming, Matthew James Thomas Sep 2018

In Vitro Growth Of Osteoblasts On Poly Lactic-Co-Glycolic Acid Scaffolds Created Via Gas Foaming, Matthew James Thomas

Master's Theses

This study analyzed the feasibility of using gas foaming to create Poly Lactic-co-Glycolic Acid (PLGA) scaffolds for use as a substrate in bone tissue engineering and set out to determine whether the presence of osteoblasts on these scaffolds enhanced their material stiffness. The process of bone formation involves osteoblasts depositing extracellular matrix and calcifying this matrix with calcium phosphate crystals (Hasegawa et al., 2017) and pits between 30-40μm in diameter on tissue engineering scaffold surfaces have been shown to best promote osteogenic activity in the presence of bone-forming cells (Halai et al., 2014).The scaffolds were determined to contain pits within …
