Revised And Updated Vascular Plant Checklists For The Baja California Northern Pacific Islands, Sula Vanderplank, Jon Rebman, Exequiel Ezcurra

Western North American Naturalist

In the last 3 years, significant advances have occurred in our knowledge of the flora of the northern Baja California Pacific Islands. The availability of herbarium specimen data has been significantly increased, and 2 expeditions were undertaken to 7 of the 8 islands in 2015 and 2016. These events have resulted in a wealth of new plant records from the islands, which are here reported with updated taxonomy for the archipelago. The results include 586 vascular plant taxa on the Baja California Northern Pacific Islands; 118 taxa were new, and 54 previously reported taxa were vouchered. The checklists include the …

Manganese-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Overview And Central Nervous System Applications With A Focus On Neurodegeneration, Ryan A. Cloyd, Shon A. Koren, Jose F. Abisambra

Physiology Faculty Publications

Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) rose to prominence in the 1990s as a sensitive approach to high contrast imaging. Following the discovery of manganese conductance through calcium-permeable channels, MEMRI applications expanded to include functional imaging in the central nervous system (CNS) and other body systems. MEMRI has since been employed in the investigation of physiology in many animal models and in humans. Here, we review historical perspectives that follow the evolution of applied MRI research into MEMRI with particular focus on its potential toxicity. Furthermore, we discuss the more current in vivo investigative uses of MEMRI in CNS investigations and …

Limited Genetic Variability In Native Buckwheats (Eriogonum: Polygonaceae) On San Clemente Island, Lynn Riley, Mitchell E. Mcglaughlin, Kaius Helenurm Dec 2018

Limited Genetic Variability In Native Buckwheats (Eriogonum: Polygonaceae) On San Clemente Island, Lynn Riley, Mitchell E. Mcglaughlin, Kaius Helenurm

Western North American Naturalist

California Channel Island buckwheats are important components of scrub communities on the Channel Islands. A long history of overgrazing by introduced herbivores on San Clemente Island has contributed to scrub vegetation loss and population declines in 2 endemic island taxa, Eriogonum giganteum var. formosum and E. grande var. grande. Since herbivore removal, Eriogonum species, which are early colonizers of disturbed habitats, have been increasing across the island. These increases are thought to facilitate further recovery of the native flora because the shrubs act as nurse plants and improve the soil profile for other native species.

We genotyped individuals from both …

The corollary of membership and a voice in the affairs of the strata corporation is a duty to accept its governing …

A Comparison Of Arrested And Not Arrested Individuals Using Facebook, Jalen Smith, Matthew Hayes Dec 2018

A Comparison Of Arrested And Not Arrested Individuals Using Facebook, Jalen Smith, Matthew Hayes

The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin

Social networking sites, like Facebook, have had an enormous impact on how people form relationships and the type of behavior that is shared with the public. The Social Bond Theory, created by Travis Hirschi (1969), states that individuals who have weak bonds to conventional society are more likely to commit acts of deviance than those who have strong bonds to conventional society. Going further with regards to Social Bond Theory, Hirschi (1960) along with Sampson and Laub (1990) and Salvatore and Taniguchi (2012) believed that strong bonds to the specific institutions of conformity to the norm of society, religion, work, …

Five Poems From Miss Suki, Or America Is Not Far By Utz Rachowski, Louise Stoehr Dec 2018

Five Poems From Miss Suki, Or America Is Not Far By Utz Rachowski, Louise Stoehr

Transference

The five short poems selected from Utz Rachowski’s (1954- ) 2013 volume Miss Suki oder Amerika ist nicht weit! mark a shift in his poetic work. His poetry and prose focus almost exclusively on life in the former German Democratic Republic. During the time the GDR existed, his critical poems were cause for his arrest and imprisonment and eventual exile to West Germany. Rachowski has continued to examine his experiences of life under state oppression, including the ramifications of unification. With the 2013 publication of Miss Suki, Rachowski added a new tone of lightness to his writing, which nevertheless …

Frankenstein: A Feminist Interpretation Of Gender Construction, Jackie Docka Dec 2018

Frankenstein: A Feminist Interpretation Of Gender Construction, Jackie Docka

Augsburg Honors Review

There is a long history of exploring Frankenstein through a feminist lens. A historical examination that explores Mary Shelley’s life and the literature that influenced her writing is key to understanding the feminist elements of Frankenstein. Additionally, this paper will call upon Judith Butler’s concept of gender performativity to examine the ways in which Victor’s monster constructs his own gender identity based upon his creator’s own flawed masculinity. Victor’s gender expression is defined by the time period in which he was created and also by the masculine literature of the time. While masculine literature helped to define both the monster’s …
