Impact Of Integrated Vegetation Management Practices On Green Antelopehorn Milkweed (Asclepias Viridis Walter) In Right-Of-Ways And Forages, Nolan Hendrix Thorne
Theses and Dissertations
Common integrated vegetation management (IVM) practices including herbicide and mowing applications on right-of-ways and forages were evaluated on green antelopehorn populations near Starkville, MS. Live stems in each plot were counted prior to treatment application and approximately one year after treatment (YAT). Analysis of the stem counts 1YAT indicated aminopyralid+metsulfuron, imazapyr, picloram+2,4-D, maximum rates of triclopyr ester or choline, glyphosate, imazapyr+aminocyclopyrachlor+metsulfuron reduced the number of green antelopehorn stems compared to the untreated. Aminocyclopyrachlor, aminocyclopyrachlor+chlorsulfuron, aminopyralid, aminopyralid+2,4-D, dicamba+2,4-D, foramsulfuron+iodosulfuron+thiencarbazone, fluroxypyr, hexazinone, metsulfuron, metsulfuron+chlorsulfuron, nicosulfuron+metsulfuron, sulfometuron, sulfosulfuron or low rates of triclopyr did not reduce the stem count 1YAT when compared to …

In Vivo Study Of The Effect Of Different Levels Of Chemical Fertilizers On The Indigotin Dye In The Indigofera Tinctoria Plant Using Raman Spectroscopy, Fatemah Alharthi
Theses and Dissertations
An impact of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers on the concentration changes of carotenoid pigments in the Indigofera tinctoria plant by using Raman spectroscopic techniques is studied. Three different concentration levels of the fertilizers with a normal supply as control were added to the plants at two stages. The Raman spectra were taken to determine the carotenoid concentration level changes in the plant leaves in vivo. The ring-stretching mode are the Raman spectroscopic signatures for the carotenoid pigment and its magnitude increased significantly (over 170%) for the case of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers. The effect from the nitrogen fertilizer was …
Individual Differences In Creative Cognition, Sarah K. Craig
Individual Differences In Creative Cognition, Sarah K. Craig
Theses and Dissertations
Creativity is increasing in value worldwide, but the processes underlying various creative abilities remain ambiguous. The most frequently used assessments of creativity (i.e., divergent thinking tasks; creative problem-solving tasks) differ in surface features and are also rarely examined together. These inconsistencies, in addition to mixed findings in the literature, have caused considerable debate among creativity researchers concerning the particular roles of independent or dual processes that lead to success on different creativity tests. The present study expounded upon these mixed findings using a factor analytic method. The results indicated that individual differences in working memory and fluency ability impact performance …
An "[Un]Readiness To Be Touched": The Critique Of Sentimentalism In Sensation Fiction, Rachel Vernell Wolfe
An "[Un]Readiness To Be Touched": The Critique Of Sentimentalism In Sensation Fiction, Rachel Vernell Wolfe
Theses and Dissertations
Early sensation novels such as Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White, Mary Elizabeth Braddon’s Lady Audley’s Secret, and Ellen Wood’s East Lynne use the eighteenth-century notion of sentiment in very distinct manners. These novels demonstrate a perspective in transition regarding sentimentality in how they apply sentimental qualities to very specific character types. Some characters are extremely sentimental, whereas others appear completely void of emotion and are even described as automata. These sensation novels even feature sentimental journeys and objects, as well as allusions to sentimental novels such as Laurence Sterne’s A Sentimental Journey and Henry Mackenzie’s Man of Feeling. The …
System Dynamics Model Of Necrotic Enteritis And Its Predisposing Factors In Broilers, Yu-Bin Chou
System Dynamics Model Of Necrotic Enteritis And Its Predisposing Factors In Broilers, Yu-Bin Chou
Theses and Dissertations
Necrotic enteritis (NE) caused by Clostridium perfringens type A is an important bacterial enteric disease of global broiler production. However, the dynamic interactions of NE and its predisposing factors are not fully presented by current studies. By using the System Dynamics (SD) Model, the epidemiological changes in susceptible-infected-removed models of NE and avian coccidiosis and their interactions in one or multiple grow-out cycles was established; meanwhile, the growth performance was measured by the average weights of infected and non-infected populations at harvest were estimated. The SD model provided direct and persuasive outcomes of the epidemiology and ecology of NE compared …

Testament To Home: Using The Cultural Landscape Report For Conserving Historic House Grounds, Sylvia Rody Mclaurin
Theses and Dissertations
The cultural landscape report (CLR) is a document commissioned by historic sites for the purpose of confirming an historic landscape’s significance and integrity, assessing its defining characteristics, evaluating the condition of its features, and recommending present and future landscape treatments. In this study of six publicly owned historic home grounds in the Deep South, the contents and format of the respective CLR’s are reviewed and site directors interviewed to determine their use of the CLR for their sites. While CLR’s are valuable especially to support bids for funding and other appropriations, directors indicate needs not readily met by their respective …
The Effect Of Bacterial Supplementation On Black Soldier Fly Larval Growth And Development, Emilia Marjatta Kooienga
The Effect Of Bacterial Supplementation On Black Soldier Fly Larval Growth And Development, Emilia Marjatta Kooienga
Theses and Dissertations
With a growing human population, food insecurity is becoming a worldwide problem. As the search for sustainable sources of protein continues, black soldier fly larvae come to the forefront as a partial solution. Full of proteins and fats, the larvae will consume most organic matter and rapidly develop into a usable form. Supplementing black soldier fly larvae with oleaginous microbes Arthrobacter AK19 and Rhodococcus rhodochrous increases their body size by 25%, potentially accelerates their development by one day, and increases their conversion efficiency. Supplementing with Bifidobacterium breve decreased body size, slowed development, and decreased conversion efficiency, underscoring the importance of …

The Effects Of A Web-Based Instructional Program: Promoting Student Growth In Reading And Mathematics Achievement, Penelope Pritchett Hill
Theses and Dissertations
As advances in technology allowed national and state education assessments to be administered digitally, many school districts transitioned to computer-based instructional programs and assessments to improve student achievement and better prepare students for high-stakes computerized assessments. One such rural public school district in Mississippi implemented a supplemental web-based instructional program, i-Ready, for the first time in the 2017-2018 school year. The purpose of this study was (a) to investigate the effects of the i-Ready program on student achievement in Grades 4 – 5 reading/language arts and mathematics and (b) to determine if there were significant differences in growth (from pretest …
Microbial Succession From A Controlled Death Event Following Simulated Mass Mortality, Lindsay K. Harrison
Microbial Succession From A Controlled Death Event Following Simulated Mass Mortality, Lindsay K. Harrison
Theses and Dissertations
An increasing trend in mass mortality events (MMEs) has been observed in recent years, leading to an increased study of these events and their causes. Still to be investigated are the immediate and long-term effects of these environmental disturbances. Microbial communities found on and within the carcass are a major contributor to decomposition. With an increased biomass from several carcasses, transfer of these microbes to secondary death events may be affected. For this project, several simulated MMEs were used in conjunction with a secondary death event to observe the effects of transfer between the microbial communities and changes in the …
Transferability Of Maxent And Expert Opinion Models For American Beaver, Isidro A. Barela
Transferability Of Maxent And Expert Opinion Models For American Beaver, Isidro A. Barela
Theses and Dissertations
Modeling habitat suitability is beneficial for management and conservation of a species. Although data-rich models are commonly used, opinion-based models may be a beneficial alternative to estimate suitable habitat locations. Despite the increasing use of habitat models, few studies have linked habitat model covariates (i.e., land cover, weather, and normalized difference vegetation indexes (NDVI)) to demographic parameters. This study evaluates model performance and transferability of maximum entropy (MaxEnt) and expert opinion models for predicting American beaver (Castor canadensis) distribution in the southeastern US. I also investigated the relationship of environmental and habitat model covariates to beaver survival. The model’s predictive …

Using Geospatial Techniques To Assess Responses Of Black Bear Populations To Anthropogenically Modified Landscapes: Conflict & Recolonization, Jamie Elizabeth Mcfadden
Theses and Dissertations
The convergence of three young scientific disciplines (ecology, geospatial sciences, and remote sensing) has generated unique advancements in wildlife research by connecting ecological data with remote sensing data through the application of geospatial techniques. Ecological datasets may contain spatial and sampling biases. By using geospatial techniques, datasets may be useful in revealing landscape scale (e.g., statewide) trends for wildlife populations, such as population recovery and human-wildlife interactions. Specifically, black bear populations across North America vary greatly in their degree of distribution stability. The black bear population in Michigan may be considered stable or secure, whereas the population in Missouri is …
Refining Spawning Protocols For Crappie, Christian A. Shirley
Refining Spawning Protocols For Crappie, Christian A. Shirley
Theses and Dissertations
White Crappie (Pomoxis annularis) and Black Crappie (P. nigromaculatus) are popular North American gamefish; however, frequent fluctuations in year class strength present a management challenge for recreational fisheries. Intensive aquaculture production has the potential to address this challenge through controlled hatchery reproduction for supplemental stocking, but further study is needed to refine and optimize techniques. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of hormone injection timing on latency period and spawning success, examined effective cryopreservation techniques for black-stripe Black Crappie sperm (a preferred hatchery phenotype), and compared simulated spring duration on out-of-season spawning success. Latency period for White Crappie did not …

Anxiety disorders as a stand-alone diagnosis are not recognized as a treatable mental health issue within the social services mental health realm. There are mixed results regarding if anxiety disorders are linked to suicide ideation and suicide attempts. The aim of this systematic review was to discover if there is a link between anxiety disorders and suicide ideation and suicide attempts within the current literature. All anxiety disorders were looked at, except for selective mutism and separation anxiety disorder due to these both typically only affecting those in very young childhood. The rest of the anxiety disorders affect those from …
The Rhetoric Of Missions Reporting, Bailey Cate
The Rhetoric Of Missions Reporting, Bailey Cate
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Missions, especially short-term trips, are becoming more and more controversial. As short-term missionaries interact in the field, they take pictures depicting the poverty, lack of resources, and overall sense of destitution around them. These photos have helped generate income, as many Christians who see the photos as part of updates on mission work they supported come to see themselves in a position of “savior” because they have resources to give to “those in need.” Evangelism is a critical component of Christianity; however, how people evangelize and how they communicate about that evangelism is equally critical. By analyzing both the church …

Quantifying The Effects Of Transporting Psats On The Swimming Performance Of Juvenile Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena Hippurus), Charles James Mcguigan
Open Access Theses
Various types of tags are used across a wide range of teleost and elasmobranch species to collect valuable information on life-history, behavior, migration, and habitat utilization. However, a limited number of studies have been conducted to investigate the costs associated with transporting these tags. Young-adult mahi-mahi (25-35 cm fork length) were tagged with miniature pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) to assess the impacts of tagging on various movement parameters in a two- part experiment. Using swim tunnel respirometry, this study revealed significant reductions in the critical and optimal swimming speeds of 10% and 24%, respectively (p0.05) between any of the …

Unhappy Consciousness, One-Dimensionality, And The Possibility Of Social Transformation, Arnold L. Farr
Unhappy Consciousness, One-Dimensionality, And The Possibility Of Social Transformation, Arnold L. Farr
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The present article departs from concepts and ideas thoroughly developed by Herbert Marcuse. As such, it deals with his approach concerning the possibility of social transformation, looking to problematize the obstacles and hardships associated to the ongoing forms of social domination. To take this through, central works such as Eros and civilization and One-dimensional man are taken up, along with a number of lesser known texts and posthumously published reflections. Asserting the influence of Hegel, Marx and Freud, it is considered possible to criticize some of the existing contradictions that mark capitalist relations, interpreting them dialectically and immanently to unveil …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
SNP chips are commonly used for genotyping animals in genomic selection but strategies for selecting low-density (LD) SNPs for imputation-mediated genomic selection have not been addressed adequately. The main purpose of the present study was to compare the performance of eight LD (6K) SNP panels, each selected by a different strategy exploiting a combination of three major factors: evenly-spaced SNPs, increased minor allele frequencies, and SNP-trait associations either for single traits independently or for all the three traits jointly. The imputation accuracies from 6K to 80K SNP genotypes were between 96.2 and 98.2%. Genomic prediction accuracies obtained using imputed 80K …
What Turtle Blood Tastes Like, Jonas Lamb
What Turtle Blood Tastes Like, Jonas Lamb
Faculty and Staff
What Turtle Blood Tastes Like explores acts of initiation and the packs we run with: wild boys, family, animal companions. Turtle blood acts as an elixir, opening doors to the muck of childhood, that coursing of heat and blood felt in the ears while walking the edge of right and wrong. In these poems fatherhood and home ownership are impending disasters that complicate the domestic landscape. Origin stories emerge unexpectedly from gardens, in bites of pickled whitefish and the gold foil of butterscotch candy. What routes have led us here, from what seeds have we grown? The critical essay, “Subverting …

Cardiovascular disease, rare in premenopausal women, increases sharply at menopause and is typically accompanied by chronic inflammation. Previous work in our laboratory demonstrated that replacing senescent ovaries in post-reproductive mice with young, actively cycling ovaries restored many health benefits, including decreased cardiomyopathy and restoration of immune function. Our objective here was to determine if depletion of germ cells from young transplanted ovaries would alter the ovarian-dependent extension of life and health span. Sixty-day-old germ cell-depleted and germ cell-containing ovaries were transplanted to post-reproductive, 17-month-old mice. Mean life span for female CBA/J mice is approximately 644 days. Mice that received germ …

Virtue Ethics, Deontology, And Consequentialism, Brandon Roby
Virtue Ethics, Deontology, And Consequentialism, Brandon Roby
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Virtue ethics is fundamentally different from deontology and consequentialism. This paper goes in depth with discussions about all three theories, including advantages and disadvantages. I maintain that virtue ethics is superior to both deontology and consequentialism. Primarily, a worthwhile conception of virtue ethics would be intuitive and allow widespread trust and genuineness among people. This is so because of virtue ethics’ emphasis on the agent instead of the act. Although these theories are meant to do different things, virtue ethics can encompass many positive aspects of deontology and consequentialism and put them to good use as tools for decision-making. This …

Psychological Effects And Treatment Of An Injury On An Athlete: Suggested Treatment Plan For Athletic Trainers And Physical Therapist, Odell Miller
Honors Theses
Injuries that force athletes to lose participation in their sport and or training have a tremendous impact on their mental health. Mental health issues can be detrimental, but often times go unnoticed. For example in 2010, Kenny McKinley, a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, was found dead after killing himself with a gun. After suffering a knee injury, he had become progressively depressed. Investigators reported that there are statements saying that McKinley didn’t know what he would do without football. According to NCAA’s Sports Science Institute (2017), the psychological response to injury can trigger mental health issues such as: …

Manganese-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging: Overview And Central Nervous System Applications With A Focus On Neurodegeneration, Ryan A. Cloyd, Shon A. Koren, Jose F. Abisambra
Physiology Faculty Publications
Manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) rose to prominence in the 1990s as a sensitive approach to high contrast imaging. Following the discovery of manganese conductance through calcium-permeable channels, MEMRI applications expanded to include functional imaging in the central nervous system (CNS) and other body systems. MEMRI has since been employed in the investigation of physiology in many animal models and in humans. Here, we review historical perspectives that follow the evolution of applied MRI research into MEMRI with particular focus on its potential toxicity. Furthermore, we discuss the more current in vivo investigative uses of MEMRI in CNS investigations and …
