Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Apoptosis and oxidative stress are essential for the pathogenesis of acute liver failure and fulminant hepatic failure. Human placental hydrolysate (hPH) has been reported to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. In the present study, the protective effects of hPH against D-galactosamine (D-GalN)- and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced hepatocyte apoptosis were investigated in vivo. In addition, the molecular mechanisms underlying the anti-apoptotic activities of hPH against D-GalN-induced cell death in vitro were examined. Male Sprague-D awley rats were injected with D-GaIN/LPS with or without the administration of hPH. Rats were sacrificed 24 h after D-GaIN/LPS intraperitoneal injection, and the blood and liver samples …

Prevailing Clusters Of Canine Behavioural Traits In Historical Us Demand For Dog Breeds (1926–2005), Bethany Wilson, James Serpell, Harold Herzog, Paul Mcgreevy

Demography and Statistics for Companion Animal Populations Collection

Drawing on American Kennel Club (AKC) puppy registration numbers for approximately 82 varieties of pedigree dogs between 1926 and 2005, the current article analyses behavioural reports on 32,005 dogs of these varieties reported through the Canine Behavioural Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ). Cluster analysis of C-BARQ scores indicates that the 82 breeds fell into six clusters. Average scores for each of the 14 behavioural subscales and 22 miscellaneous traits in C-BARQ were calculated for each cluster, and the breeds in each cluster with average scores most similar to the cluster averages were selected as titular breeds. Titular breeds for each …

Trex1 Is Expressed By Microglia In Normal Human Brain And Increases In Regions Affected By Ischemia, Parul H Kothari, Grant R Kolar, Joanna C Jen, Rula Hajj-Ali, Paula Bertram, Robert E Schmidt, John P Atkinson

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the three-prime repair exonuclease 1 (TREX1) gene have been associated with neurological diseases, including Retinal Vasculopathy with Cerebral Leukoencephalopathy (RVCL). However, the endogenous expression of TREX1 in human brain has not been studied.

METHODS: We produced a rabbit polyclonal antibody (pAb) to TREX1 to characterize TREX1 by Western blotting (WB) of cell lysates from normal controls and subjects carrying an RVCL frame-shift mutation. Dual staining was performed to determine cell types expressing TREX1 in human brain tissue. TREX1 distribution in human brain was further evaluated by immunohistochemical analyses of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded samples from normal controls and patients …

Urban Re-Greening: A Case Study In Multi-Trophic Biodiversity And Ecosystem Functioning In A Post-Industrial Landscape, Frank Gallagher, Nina M. Goodey, Diane Hagmann, Jay Prakash Singh, Claus Holzapfel, Megan Litwhiler, Jennifer Adams Krumins Nov 2018

Urban Re-Greening: A Case Study In Multi-Trophic Biodiversity And Ecosystem Functioning In A Post-Industrial Landscape, Frank Gallagher, Nina M. Goodey, Diane Hagmann, Jay Prakash Singh, Claus Holzapfel, Megan Litwhiler, Jennifer Adams Krumins

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The biodiversity of urban and post-industrial ecosystems is a highly relevant and growing new frontier in ecological research. Even so, the functionality of these ecosystems may not always be successfully predicted based on prior biodiversity and ecosystem functioning theory. Indeed, evidence suggests that the general biological impoverishment within the urban context envisioned thirty years ago was overstated. Many of the world’s urban centers support some degree of biodiversity that is indigenous, as well as a complex array of non-native species, resulting in highly functional, and often, novel communities. For over two decades, a multi-disciplinary team has examined the sub-lethal impact …

If The Text Is Clear—Lexical Ordering In Statutory Interpretation, Adam M. Samaha Nov 2018

If The Text Is Clear—Lexical Ordering In Statutory Interpretation, Adam M. Samaha

Notre Dame Law Review

Most courts now endorse lexical ordering for statutory cases. That is, a limited set of top-tier sources, if adequately clear, are supposed to establish statutory meaning. Lower-tier sources are held in reserve for close calls. Examples include legislative history and deference to agency positions, which often are demoted into tiebreaking roles. In fact, some such hierarchy of sources is approved by working majorities at the U.S. Supreme Court and more than forty state supreme courts. Although popular today, lexically ordered interpretation has risen and fallen before. Indeed, we should pause to reconsider whether these instructions are justified and whether judges …

The Ouroboros Of Rubrics: A Conundrum, A Case, And A Call, Anita Bright Nov 2018

The Ouroboros Of Rubrics: A Conundrum, A Case, And A Call, Anita Bright

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this think piece, the author explores a conundrum and tension related to using rubrics to evaluate doctoral work. She ponders whether the use of rubrics provides beneficial ways for students to “crack the code” of academia, and/or whether the use of rubrics is perhaps a tool to engender conformity. With these competing ideas in mind, the author considers in what ways one might press for means to provide this on-ramp of access for students to the existing power structures, while at the same time seeking to change academia, to more equitably provide spaces for a range in ways of …

Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia Annual Report 2017/2018, Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia Nov 2018

Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia Annual Report 2017/2018, Biosecurity Council Of Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

There were two key areas in which the Council focused during the year:

  • environmental biosecurity; and
  • the attributes required by a biosecurity ‘combat’ agency to effectively sustain a biosecurity response.

In addition, planning began for two new areas of advice to Government – biosecurity research and development; and border biosecurity.

Developing constructive advice to Government requires a comprehensive understanding of the needs and challenges of industry, Government and the community. It also requires an understanding of how changes to the biosecurity system might impact these groups and affect the State’s biosecurity status. During 2017/18 the Council continued to monitor biosecurity …

Better The Devil You Know: An Examination Of Manufacturer Driven Lethal Injection Drug Shortages, Heather Booth Nov 2018

Better The Devil You Know: An Examination Of Manufacturer Driven Lethal Injection Drug Shortages, Heather Booth

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

In an attempt to make executions more humane, Oklahoma’s Department of Corrections (“DOC”) consulted a physician to overhaul the state’s execution protocol. This consultation resulted in the implementation of the modern three-drug lethal injection cocktail. However, recent challenges to lethal injection protocols tell a different story. European-based drug companies, wary of having their products used in executions, have begun refusing to sell drugs to state DOCs. This refusal is mostly with respect to the first drug in the three-drug cocktail, the anesthetic. This refusal has led to drug shortages and improvisation that some doctors say will cause unnecessary pain and …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Fifty years ago, riparian habitats were not recognized for their extensive and critical contributions to wildlife and the ecosystem function of watersheds. This changed as riparian values were identified and documented, and the science of riparian ecology developed steadily. Papers in this volume range from the more mesic northwestern United States to the arid Southwest and Mexico. More than two dozen authors—most with decades of experience—review the origins of riparian science in the western United States, document what is currently known about riparian ecosystems, and project future needs. Topics are widespread and include: interactions with fire, climate change, and declining …

Mechanisms Underlying Insect Freeze Tolerance., Jantina Toxopeus, Brent J Sinclair Nov 2018

Mechanisms Underlying Insect Freeze Tolerance., Jantina Toxopeus, Brent J Sinclair

Biology Publications

Freeze tolerance - the ability to survive internal ice formation - has evolved repeatedly in insects, facilitating survival in environments with low temperatures and/or high risk of freezing. Surviving internal ice formation poses several challenges because freezing can cause cellular dehydration and mechanical damage, and restricts the opportunity to metabolise and respond to environmental challenges. While freeze-tolerant insects accumulate many potentially protective molecules, there is no apparent 'magic bullet' - a molecule or class of molecules that appears to be necessary or sufficient to support this cold-tolerance strategy. In addition, the mechanisms underlying freeze tolerance have been minimally explored. Herein, …

The Nebraska Mesonet: Technical Overview Of An Automated State Weather Network, Martha Shulski, Stonie Cooper, Glen Roebke, Allen L. Dutcher

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The Nebraska Mesonet was established in 1981 as one of the nation’s first automated state weather networks. ‘‘Automated’’ is defined by the nature of the observations being made and recorded by machine, as opposed to observations made and recorded manually. At the time of inception, the five observing locations were geared toward servicing agricultural production applications. The Nebraska Mesonet has grown to 69 stations (as of 2018) and is now a multipurpose environmental observing network under the Nebraska State Climate Office (NSCO). The network is composed of environmental observation stations, sited using best practices for mesoscale and microscale environment situations. …

The Sharing Economy As An Equalizing Economy, John O. Mcginnis Nov 2018

The Sharing Economy As An Equalizing Economy, John O. Mcginnis

Notre Dame Law Review

Economic equality is often said to be the key problem of our time. But information technology dematerializes the world in ways that are helpful to the ninety-nine percent, because information can be shared. This Article looks at how one fruit of the information revolution—the sharing economy—has important equalizing features on both its supply and demand sides. First, on the supply side, the intermediaries in the sharing economy, like Airbnb and Uber, allow owners of housing and cars to monetize their most important capital assets. The gig aspect of this economy creates spot markets in jobs that have flexible hours and …

A Tribute To Teachers, Jase Graves Nov 2018

A Tribute To Teachers, Jase Graves

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

With school back in full swing, I'd like to say a few words about teachers, without whom none of us would know what in the heck to do with the word "whom." I come from a long-ish line of teachers myself. My mother taught elementary and middle school for over thirty years, and my grandmother also had a brief stint practicing the pedagogical arts. I guess you could say teaching is in my blood-like a serious infection. In fact, "pedagogy" kind of sounds like the name of a disease.

Tumour Treating Fields (Ttfs) For Paediatric Brain Tumours, Brain Metastases And Other Novel Applications, Farhan Arshad Mirza, Muhammad Shahzad Shamim

Section of Neurosurgery

Tumour treating fields (TTFs) are now FDA approved for high grade glioma treatment. Novel application of this treatment modality is being assessed for paediatric brain tumours and intracranial metastatic disease. Clinical trials are being conducted to test the efficacy of this treatment modality as adjuvant therapy to current standard of care. Here we will discuss the existing literature on TTF its role in pathologies other than GBM. In addition, aspects of safety, compliance and cost are also discussed.
