BACKGROUND: Few studies have previously assessed how pre-existing vitamin E status is associated with risk of tuberculosis (TB) disease progression.
OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the association between baseline plasma concentrations of 3 vitamin E isomers (α-tocopherol, γ-tocopherol, and δ-tocopherol) and TB disease risk.
METHODS: We conducted a case-control study nested within a longitudinal cohort of household contacts (HHCs) of pulmonary TB cases in Lima, Peru. We defined cases as HHCs who developed active TB disease ≥15 d after the diagnosis of the index patient, and we matched each case to 4 control cases who did not develop active TB based on …

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of forced exercise on anxiogenic behavior in Danio rerio living in different environmental conditions. To study this relationship, zebrafish were introduced to the following housing environments for several weeks. Fish in Group 1 were exposed to brown gravel and green, plastic plants (enriched environment), and fish in Group 2 were exposed to no brown gravel and no green, plastic plants (impoverished, structurally-barren environment). Fish from both housing environments were randomly assigned to be exposed to exercise or no exercise (control). Fish in the exercise group were forced to swim against …

Racism, Resistance, Resilience: Chronically Ill African American Women’S Experiences Navigating A Changing Healthcare System, Elizabeth New
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
This medical anthropology dissertation is an intersectional study of the illness experiences of African-American women living with the chronic autoimmune syndrome systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus. Research was conducted in Memphis, Tennessee from 2013 to 2015, with the aim of examining the healthcare resources available to working poor and working class women using public sector healthcare programs to meet their primary care needs. This project focuses on resources available through Tennessee’s privatized public sector healthcare system, TennCare, during the first phases of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). A critical medical anthropological analysis is used …
Binational Farming Families Of Southern Appalachia And The Mexican Bajio, Mary Elizabeth W. Schmid
Binational Farming Families Of Southern Appalachia And The Mexican Bajio, Mary Elizabeth W. Schmid
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
Over the last four decades, farming families throughout North America experienced significant transitions due, in part, to the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. This multi-sited dissertation investigates the ways in which a network of binational (Mexican-American) families organize their small- to mid-scale farming enterprises, engage in global networks as food producers, and contribute to rural economies in the southeastern U.S. and the Mexican Bajío. To mitigate difficult transitions that came with the globalizing of agri-food markets, members of this extended family group created collaborative, kin-based arrangements to produce, distribute, and market fresh-market fruits and vegetables in the …

Late Pleistocene Adaptations In The Midsouth: The Paleoindian Occupation Of The Carson-Conn-Short Site And The Lower Tennessee River Valley, James Scott Jones
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
The Midsouth has long been known to be a locus of Paleoindian (13,200-10,000 yrs B.P.) populations. Paleoindian populations have generally been characterized as highly mobile hunter-gatherers with egalitarian social structure. Utilizing the theoretical lens of diversification and intensification of resource use, the Late Pleistocene adaptations of the region’s populations are examined from both a large scale or coarse grain perspective as well as more fine grain data from the site level. Previous models of Paleoindian adaptations are defined and tested in this study to determine the applicability of these models with new data. Coarse grain data are derived from lithic …
New Approaches To Selection System Design In Healthcare: The Practical And Theoretical Relevance Of A Modular Approach, Filip Lievens, Jan Corstjens
New Approaches To Selection System Design In Healthcare: The Practical And Theoretical Relevance Of A Modular Approach, Filip Lievens, Jan Corstjens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This chapter presents a modular approach to healthcare selection system design. Contrary to the traditional holistic view on selection procedures, a modular approach highlights the components underlying selection procedures. Our framework identifies seven key design components of selection procedures (The stimulus format, contextualization, stimulus presentation consistency, the response format, response evaluation consistency, information source, and instructions) and reviews studies in the healthcare selection literature that compared the effect of these components on key selection outcomes. A modular approach allows (1) gaining insights into how the different components underlying selection procedures affect selection outcomes and (2) drawing conceptual similarities between components …
Regulating Complacency: Human Limitations And Legal Efficacy, Steven L. Schwarcz
Regulating Complacency: Human Limitations And Legal Efficacy, Steven L. Schwarcz
Faculty Scholarship
This Article examines how insights into limited human rationality can improve financial regulation. The Article identifies four categories of limitations—herd behavior, cognitive biases, overreliance on heuristics, and a proclivity to panic—that undermine the perfect-market regulatory assumptions that parties have full information and will act in their rational self-interest. The Article then analyzes how insights into these limitations can be used to correct resulting market failures. Requiring more robust disclosure and due diligence, for example, can help to reduce reliance on misleading information cascades that motivate herd behavior. Debiasing through law, such as requiring more specific, poignant, and concrete disclosure of …

Identification Of Genes And Metabolites Involved In Durian Durio Zibethinus Fruit Ripening, Pinnapat Pinsorn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Durian (Durio zibethinus M.), a major economic fruit, actively produces infamous sulfur-containing compounds during ripening. However, sulfur metabolism which is important in this fruit is rarely investigated. In this study, the integration of metabolomics using CE-TOF/MS and transcriptomics using de novo RNA-seq assembly was performed to reveal metabolic changes involved in sulfur metabolism and chemical composition related to fruit quality. During ripening, the expression level of genes involved in sulfur metabolism is concurred with the reduced sulfate ion content in placenta and the up-accumulation of sulfur metabolism-related metabolites in pulps. It is noteworthy that durian pulps highly accumulate γ-glutamylcysteine (γ-EC) …

Characterization Of Recombinant Glycogen Debranching Enzyme From Corynebacterium Glutamicum And Application For Resistant Starch Production, Chay Sirirattanachatchawan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Glycogen debranching enzyme (EC 2.4.1.25/EC 3.2.1.33) catalyzes a hydrolysis of α-1,6 glycosidic bond and a transfer α-1,4 glucan from donor molecules to acceptor molecules. The objectives of this research are to characterize a glycogen debranching enzyme from Corynebacterium glutamicum (CgGDE) and optimize resistant starch (RS) type 3 production using recombinant CgGDE. Recombinant CgGDE was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) and successfully purified by DEAE FFTM column. The calculated molecular weight of CgGDE was approximately 95 kDa and the protein existed as a trimer as analyzed by size exclusion chromatography. CgGDE showed the highest activity on amylopectin followed by glycogen, …

Determination Of Organic Acid Preservatives In Shrimp Paste By Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Combined With Gas Chromatography, Nuttanee Tungkijanansin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Organic acids, which are benzoic acid, sorbic acid and propionic acid, are the most common preservatives used in foods and have been regulated the usage. Shrimp paste, called Kapi in Thai, is a fermented food that used in many Thai dishes. Owing to a complex matrix in shrimp paste, sample preparation is required to determine the amount of organic acid preservatives in shrimp paste. In this work, headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) was developed for extraction of organic acid preservatives in shrimp pastes and analyzed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The 85 µm polyacrylate coated fiber was used …

Image Super-Resolution Technique Using Deep Inception Based Residual Networks, Wazir Muhammad
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Recently, deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have achieved exceptional performance over the past few years, in the area of image processing and computer vision task, especially on single image super-resolution (SISR). It is an immensely challenging task and has multiple practical applications, such as medical image processing, satellite imaging, facial image enhancement, and compressed image improvement. However, the majority of the existing image super-resolution CNN-based methods have been developed by stacking an innumerable number of layers and blindly increasing the size of the network architecture. Conversely, this leads to an increase in the model sizes and higher computational complexities. Furthermore, …

Development Of Simple Devices For Point-Of-Care Screening Of Bacterial Infection And Inflammatory Markers, Julaluk Noiphung
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A paper-based analytical devices (PADs) provides a great benefit in medical diagnostics, especially in the developing world. The first part of this dissertation describes the effect of sample viscosity on PADs for the measurement of pH and nitrite concentration in human saliva. Preliminary study found that viscosity had a significant effect on the calibration curve of nitrite and a consistent curve could be generated after added washing buffer. Nitrite measurement in artificial saliva with viscosity 1.87-5.10 mPa-s was tested on the proposed device and also showed a good correlation with the standard spectrophotometry method (p=0.8484, paired sample t-test, n=20). Moreover, …

Chemosensitizing Effect Of Peptides From Lentinus Squarrosulus On Cisplatin-Induced Apoptosis In Human Lung Cancer Cells, Hnin Ei Ei Khine -
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Cisplatin, platinum-based chemotherapy, is one of the standard chemotherapies for the treatment of lung cancer. However, its usefulness is limited due to the adverse effects and susceptibility to chemoresistance which lead to therapeutic failure. Nowadays, natural chemosensitizers, which can enhance the efficacy and decrease the effective dose of chemo-drugs, have been found to be interested in novel therapeutic. Recently, the anticancer activity of peptides extracted from Lentinus squarrosulus Mont. in human lung cancer cells has been reported. The novel potential of L. squarrosulus peptides as a chemotherapeutic adjuvant to increase cisplatin-induced apoptosis was uncovered in this study. Crude peptides extracted …
