Engaging Undergraduates In Comparative Psychology: A Case Study, Lauren Highfill, Deirdre Yeater
Engaging Undergraduates In Comparative Psychology: A Case Study, Lauren Highfill, Deirdre Yeater
Psychology Faculty Publications
With many comparative psychologists teaching at small colleges and universities where resources are limited, maintaining a traditional animal laboratory housing rats or pigeons is not realistic for many of these researchers. One way to overcome this lack of overhead costs and extensive lab space, is to forge collaborations with local zoos and aquariums. Zoo and aquarium research projects provide a way to examine a wide range of species, which is an important tenet within the field of comparative psychology. Furthermore, many undergraduates are innately attracted to the prospect of working with exotic animals. Here, we propose utilizing visitor behavior research …

Deliberative Constitutionalism In The National Security Setting, Mary B. Derosa, Milton C. Regan
Deliberative Constitutionalism In The National Security Setting, Mary B. Derosa, Milton C. Regan
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Deliberative democracy theory maintains that authentic deliberation about matters of public concern is an essential condition for the legitimacy of political decisions. Such deliberation has two features. The first is deliberative rigor. This is deliberation guided by public-regarding reasons in a process in which persons are genuinely open to the force of the better argument. The second is transparency. This requires that requires that officials publicly explain the reasons for their decisions in terms that citizens can endorse as acceptable grounds for acting in the name of the political community.
Such requirements would seem to be especially important in the …
Can Free Speech Be Progressive?, Louis Michael Seidman
Can Free Speech Be Progressive?, Louis Michael Seidman
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Free speech cannot be progressive. At least it can't be progressive if we are talking about free speech in the American context, with all the historical, sociological, and philosophical baggage that comes with the modern, American free speech right. That is not to say that the right to free speech does not deserve protection. It might serve as an important side constraint on the pursuit of progressive goals and might even protect progressives against the possibility of catastrophic outcomes. But the notion that our free speech tradition might be weaponized to advance progressive ends is fanciful. The American free speech …
Martin Luther, The Devil, And The True Church, Thomas Renna
Martin Luther, The Devil, And The True Church, Thomas Renna
Quidditas
Martin Luther refers to the Devil more than any other Reformer. Since the 1960s, historians have been more attentive to the role of Satan in his theology and polemical writings. But the place of the Evil One in Luther’s outlook goes beyond the typically medieval emphasis on the Fiend’s “private” function in tempting individual consciences. It is argued here that Luther integrated the Devil into his view of history and the two churches, the true and the false. The Reformer closely associated Satan with the persecuted church and its Catholic oppressor, as well as with the Jews, Turks, wayward Lutherans, …

The Agency Of Wives In High Medieval German Courtly Romances And Late Medieval Verse Narratives: From Hartmann Von Aue To Heinrich Kaufringer, Albrecht Classen
The Agency Of Wives In High Medieval German Courtly Romances And Late Medieval Verse Narratives: From Hartmann Von Aue To Heinrich Kaufringer, Albrecht Classen
Quidditas
In some secular medieval literature married life increasingly gained respect and literary traction, as illustrated by the rise of genres such as verse narratives (fabliaux, mæren, novelle, tales), early prose novels, didactic literature, and Shrovetide plays. In that world we encounter many discussions about the proper relationship between husband and wife, about the individual’s role within society, and also about economic and financial aspects that had a large impact on private life, and hence also on the gender relationship. The phenomenon of female agency within marriage, which this paper will investigate, comes to the fore in more texts than …
Agency Adherence To Legislative History, Laura E. Dolbow
Agency Adherence To Legislative History, Laura E. Dolbow
Publications
Every year, Congress gives hundreds of specific directions to agencies through legislative history. Amidst debates about how agencies use legislative history as an interpretive tool to implement directives contained in statutory text, there is little analysis on how agencies respond to directives contained in the legislative history itself. How agencies respond to directives in legislative history, such as committee reports, provides important information about interactions between agencies and Congress. This Article explores how congressional committees leverage legislative history to direct agency action by studying instructions to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in appropriations committee reports. Based on this study, …
The Role Of Mobile Learning In Promoting Global Literacy And Human Rights, Judith M. Dunkerly-Bean, Helen Crompton
The Role Of Mobile Learning In Promoting Global Literacy And Human Rights, Judith M. Dunkerly-Bean, Helen Crompton
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
In this chapter the authors review the fairly recent advances in combating illiteracy around the globe through the use of e-readers and mobile phones most recently in the Worldreader program and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) mobile phone reading initiatives. Situated in human rights and utilizing the lens of transnational feminist discourse which addresses globalization and the hegemonic, monolithic portrayals of “third world” women as passive and in need of the global North’s intervention, the authors explore the ways in which the use of digital media provides increased access to books, and other texts and applications …
The Politics Of Twilights: Notes On The Semiotics Of Horizon Photography, Michael W. Raphael
The Politics Of Twilights: Notes On The Semiotics Of Horizon Photography, Michael W. Raphael
Publications and Research
Visual sociology is crucial for exploring the indexical meanings that thick description cannot capture within a cultural setting. This paper explores how such meanings are created within a subset of the domain of photography. Using data gathered over several years, I constructed the semiotic code ‘horizon’ photographers use when ‘in the field’ for photographing periods of twilight. This code explains the relevance of subject matter to the photograph’s aesthetics. Specifically, I detail how ‘the horizon’ communicates the potential for the photographer to ‘capture’ the index of a symbol that later permits the photographer to culturally mark scenes with ‘light’. In …

Is There “Hope For Every Addicted American”? The New U.S. War On Drugs, B Stone
Is There “Hope For Every Addicted American”? The New U.S. War On Drugs, B Stone
Publications and Research
The U.S. has been waging a War on Drugs for the last forty years. But in the mid-2010s, a series of reforms have rejected this militant approach. How did these policies manage to break through a gridlocked Congress? What is the nature of these reforms, and what are their political implications? Using critical discourse analysis, I demonstrate that a new policy framework of “addiction recovery” defines the political crises of the opioid epidemic, the failure of the War on Drugs, and mass incarceration in terms of disease, attributing Drug War injustices to prejudice against “addiction,” rather than a constellation of …
Flannery O'Connor And Monster Theory, Katlyn Sutton
Flannery O'Connor And Monster Theory, Katlyn Sutton
Theses
This study will assert that Flannery O'Connor's fiction falls into the genre of horror based on the frequent occurrences of monstrousness within her works. This study proposes that there is a hierarchal system of monstrousness that can be observed in O'Connor's writing. The first level of monstrousness observed can be found through reading O'Connor's works through the author's social critique of post-World War II culture. The second level of monstrousness can be found within the characters of O'Connor's fiction. The characters who are deemed monsters are both influenced by O'Connor's social critique and the role of God within the specific …
Decriminalization Of Prostitution: The Soros Effect, Jody Raphael
Decriminalization Of Prostitution: The Soros Effect, Jody Raphael
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
This article explores the activities of George Soros and his charitable organization, Open Society Foundations (OSF), in advocating for the full decriminalization of the sex trade industry. Research finds that OSF spends only a small amount of money on grass roots “sex worker” groups around the world advocating for full decriminalization, but the foundation awards larger amounts of funds to large human rights groups whose reports and policies have a wider reach. OSF’s rationale for full decriminalization fails to consider violence and coercion in the sex trade industry, misreads research, and does not include research from venues where full decriminalization …

Combat Neuroses And The Battle Of Little Big Horn, Albert Winkler
Faculty Publications
Combat stress first became a subject of much academic inquiry in the 20th century, but soldiers certainly suffered from mental problems in the 19th century as well as a result of battle, including the Little Big Horn. The purpose of this study is to examine how the stress of the Little Big Horn disturbed the participating trooper mentally and how these men suffered from symptoms related to combat neurosis such as panic, insanity, and irrational behavior which the men demonstrated during the battle and afterward.
The Science Of Neurobiology Of Sexual Assault Trauma And The Utah Legal System, Donna Kelly, Julie L. Valentine
The Science Of Neurobiology Of Sexual Assault Trauma And The Utah Legal System, Donna Kelly, Julie L. Valentine
Faculty Publications
Sexual assault triggers a cascade of physiological responses in victims, commonly referred to as the neurobiology of sexual assault trauma. Victims often report the inability to move or resist, memory loss, and loss of our altered feelings of consciousness – reactions which often negatively impact the perception of their credibility. Recently, the criminal justice system has begun to connect these normal, physiological responses in understanding common victim behaviors and responses. As knowledge of the neurobiology of sexual assault trauma disseminates throughout the criminal justice system, it is readily apparent that education, new protocols, and trauma informed interview techniques are required. …

Multicultural World In The Poetry Of Shota Rustaveli And The Issue Of Paradigm Shift In The Multicultural World Context, Nino Pirtskhalava
Multicultural World In The Poetry Of Shota Rustaveli And The Issue Of Paradigm Shift In The Multicultural World Context, Nino Pirtskhalava
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The paper scrutinizes the thematic diversity of the seminal piece of the medieval Georgian poetry by Shota Rustaveli. The rich set of spiritual some emotional values of the poetry is placed within the broadest context of the Oriental and Occidental traditions of classical poetry and world outlooks. The important point is made about moving themes and poetic instruments from Orient to West. Linkages of the epical poems of Western poetry and the Orient are argued to demonstrate the thematic convergences in creativity of Western and Oriental genius poets of the classical period. Representation of richest variety of values and eternal …

Preserving Film Preservation From The Right Of Publicity, Christopher Buccafusco, Jared Vasconcellos Grubow, Ian J. Postman
Cardozo Law Review de•novo
In this comment, we argue that whatever courts and legislatures decide to do about the other issues raised by digital animation, they should preserve the ability to use digital technology to restore and remaster existing works. In this case, at least, the benefits of digital reanimation thoroughly swamp any possible costs (and frankly, we have a hard time finding any meaningful costs). Courts and legislators should ensure that publicity rights are never allowed to trump society’s interest in having access to already created works of culture.
In Vitro Drug Metabolism And Population Pharmacokinetics As Tools For Elucidating Pharmacokinetic Variability, Enoch Cobbina
In Vitro Drug Metabolism And Population Pharmacokinetics As Tools For Elucidating Pharmacokinetic Variability, Enoch Cobbina
Open Access Dissertations
Pharmacokinetic variability is an important consideration in pharmacotherapy to ensure safety and efficacy of medications, thus the understanding of the sources of variability in drug concentrations in the body is imperative. The goals of this dissertation were: (1) To use in vitro drug metabolism tools to characterize the influence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) on Cytochrome P450 2B6 (CYP2B6)-mediated hydroxylation of bupropion in human liver microsomes; and (2) To use population pharmacokinetics to characterize the pharmacokinetics of PF-5190457, an inverse agonist of the growth hormone secretagogue receptor (hGHSR1a). This work has been organized in two parts. Part one is …

Use Of Radiation To Kill Cancer By Nanoparticles And In A Biodosimeter Using Gene Expression Analysis, Samana Shrestha
Open Access Dissertations
The use of radiation is broad in biological systems, in different areas of research mostly in health.
Radiation is used to kill cancer. In radiation therapy proper calculation is done so that a maximum dose is delivered to the cancer. Inspite of this precaution, radiation effects healthy tissue. This effect is especially dangerous when the tumor is located near important organs. Thus in radiation therapy, it is important to reduce the dose and the damage to the healthy tissues and organs. The damage on the healthy tissues due to radiation therapy in cancer could be reduced by reducing the radiation …
Regulation Of Ubiquitin Specific Peptidase 2 Expression By Farnesoid X Receptor In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Christina Nadolny
Regulation Of Ubiquitin Specific Peptidase 2 Expression By Farnesoid X Receptor In Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Christina Nadolny
Open Access Dissertations
Liver cancer is in the ten leading cancer types for estimated new cases and deaths in the United States in 2018, and is often detected at late stages when it is rapidly fatal. Of the types of liver cancers in humans, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most lethal and prevalent. An important factor in the development of HCC is Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR). FXR acts as master regulator of bile acid homeostasis, and is involved in lipid, cholesterol, and glucose homeostasis. In addition, it plays a protective role against HCC, the precise mechanisms of which has yet to be identified. …
Characterizing The Functional Role And Regulated Assembly Of Protein Polymers Mind And Ftsa During Escherichia Coli Cell Division, Joseph Jake Conti
Characterizing The Functional Role And Regulated Assembly Of Protein Polymers Mind And Ftsa During Escherichia Coli Cell Division, Joseph Jake Conti
Open Access Dissertations
It is an immense undertaking for any organism, including a bacterium, to self-replicate. Accurate and rapid division is essential for bacteria to proliferate and produce progeny, especially in environments where there is competition for resources. The nucleoid, the region of the cell that contains the DNA, harbors the genetic information required to achieve robust division, but it is the assembly of the cell division machinery, collectively referred to as the divisome, that produces and coordinates the mechanical force necessary to divide a cell. The hallmark of prokaryotic cell division is the formation of a protein super-structure, called the Z-ring, which …
