Operational Challenges In Ground Operations In Urban Areas: An Idf Perspective, Nitsan Alon Jan 2018

Operational Challenges In Ground Operations In Urban Areas: An Idf Perspective, Nitsan Alon

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The Israel Defense Forces (the IDF) is well versed in conducting ground operations. Since its inception along with the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, the IDF has conducted a number of ground operations, as part of conflicts both long and short, against various actors, and in different circumstances. The Independence War of 1948, the Six Day War of 1967, and the Yom Kippur War of 1973 provided experience with ground operations against organized state militaries. The large-scale maneuver in the First Lebanon War of 1982 and the more limited maneuver in the Second Lebanon War of 2006 …

Climate Adaptation Law: Governing Multi-Level Public Goods Across Borders, Maria L. Banda Jan 2018

Climate Adaptation Law: Governing Multi-Level Public Goods Across Borders, Maria L. Banda

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The increasingly severe and irreversible effects of climate change around the world make adaptation to a changing climate an immediate and urgent global priority, as the Paris Agreement on Climate Change acknowledged. Yet adaptation investment--to make communities and ecosystems more resilient to climate change--has been slow to materialize. Closing the finance gap and rising to the challenge of adaptation requires two conceptual shifts in how we think about adaptation law and governance. The first is that optimal adaptation is a public good, much like a healthy climate or safe streets. Everyone is better off in a resilient community that can …

Pharming Out Data: A Proposal For Promoting Innovation And Public Health Through A Hybrid Clinical Data Protection Scheme, Lea M. Gulotta Jan 2018

Pharming Out Data: A Proposal For Promoting Innovation And Public Health Through A Hybrid Clinical Data Protection Scheme, Lea M. Gulotta

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The pharmaceutical industry, one of the largest industries in the world, is rapidly becoming globalized. Clinical trials, which are required for drugs to be approved for human use, are increasingly performed outside of the pharmaceutical company's home country in an attempt to save money. This is mainly due to drug development's steep costs, and the high risks involved in an industry where only 12 percent of products that begin development ever make it to market. In order to help offset these risks and encourage innovation, many countries offer clinical trial data certain protections through patents, market exclusivity, or trade secret …

Affect-Preserving Visual Privacy Protection, Wanxin Xu Jan 2018

Affect-Preserving Visual Privacy Protection, Wanxin Xu

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

The prevalence of wireless networks and the convenience of mobile cameras enable many new video applications other than security and entertainment. From behavioral diagnosis to wellness monitoring, cameras are increasing used for observations in various educational and medical settings. Videos collected for such applications are considered protected health information under privacy laws in many countries. Visual privacy protection techniques, such as blurring or object removal, can be used to mitigate privacy concern, but they also obliterate important visual cues of affect and social behaviors that are crucial for the target applications. In this dissertation, we propose to balance the privacy …

Intelligent Methods For Optimum Online Adaptive Coordination Of Overcurrent Relays, Ke Xu Jan 2018

Intelligent Methods For Optimum Online Adaptive Coordination Of Overcurrent Relays, Ke Xu

Theses and Dissertations--Electrical and Computer Engineering

During the operation in a modern power distribution system, some abnormal events may happen, such as over-voltage, faults, under-frequency and overloading, and so on. These abnormal events may cause a power outage in a distribution system or damages on the equipment in a distribution system. Hence these abnormal events should be identified and isolated by protection systems as quickly as possible to make sure we can maintain a stable and reliable distribution system to supply adequate electric power to the largest number of consumers as we can. To sum up, we need stable and reliable protection systems to satisfy this …

Wave Of Arrival, Cathleen Bonner Jan 2018

Wave Of Arrival, Cathleen Bonner

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses poetry to explore the influences of space and geographical location on subjective perception and vision. More specifically, it aims to use landscape to observe the visible and invisible qualities of a geographical space, and investigate the ways in which perception of those spatial boundaries can be used to create self-portraits. It also aims to revise traditional, romanticized versions of the American West as manifested in poetry and photography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. To do so, it focuses its attention on the man-altered landscape, rather than the pure, wild landscape as a space barricaded …

Assessing Exposure To Occupants In An Indoor Space Due To Expirated Aerosols: Application Of Computational Fluid Dynamics, Firoza Binte Omar

Theses and Dissertations

Indoor environment is an important issue for the well-being of the society. In the United States more than 90% people spend their time indoor, indoor air pollution is more culpable than the pollution outside air. Two third of US businesses lose more than $100,000 per year due to workplace related illness. The trend of sharing the work space has an impact on total sick leaves in a company. Infectious particles released by a flu sufferer’s sneezing, coughing or even laughing can be a vital source. A thorough analysis on infectious particles’ transmission and air flow of the space can provide …

Ground Truthing: The Politics And Culture Of Soil And Water Conservation In Iowa Agriculture, Brianna Farber Jan 2018

Ground Truthing: The Politics And Culture Of Soil And Water Conservation In Iowa Agriculture, Brianna Farber

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the complex relationships between people, technologies, and ecologies involved in natural resource conservation and industrial agriculture in Iowa. Specifically I focus on the various efforts to address water pollution affected primarily by agriculture in the state. Using a theoretical framework informed by political ecology, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and posthumanist theory, I draw on thirteen months of ethnographic fieldwork to discuss what makes conservation culturally salient and practically difficult to achieve. This difficulty around conservation arises in part from the tensions between what I describe as the corn assemblage and the prairie assemblage. I identify these …

Impact Of A Steam Lab On Science Achievement And Attitudes For Girls, Barbara Cifaldi Jan 2018

Impact Of A Steam Lab On Science Achievement And Attitudes For Girls, Barbara Cifaldi

Theses and Dissertations

This research identifies a problem of practice with standardized science test scores declining over the last eight years. The Sea Turtle Elementary School for the Creative Arts (STESCA; pseudonym) schedule allowed 150 minutes per week for science instruction, compared with 450 minutes per week for mathematics instruction. Science instruction has been implemented primarily through direct instruction and the use of textbooks and videos. In addition to the limited instructional time for science and predominant use of direct instructional methods, there is a lack of racially diverse and female role models evident in the curriculum. With STESCA’s standardized science test scores …

Marsilio Ficino’S Neo-Platonist Concepts Of Power As Represented In Selected Paintings By Sandro Botticelli: A Study In Representation, Iconography, Iconology And Reasoning, Frank C. Martin, Ii

Theses and Dissertations

arsilio Ficino's Neo-Platonist assessments of differing aspects of powers or capacities associated with the human soul (spiritual, conceptual, influential, and the capacity to engender effects upon material reality), as represented within selected religious and secular paintings by Sandro Botticelli, are discussed in this study for an analysis of the innovative, syncretic conceptual unity of ancient North-African, MiddleEastern, Greco-Roman and early Christian and Medieval philosophical and theological traditions which are advocated by Ficino’s theoretical formulations. Botticelli's paintings are considered for the manner in which they may be understood, within the context of Ficino's conceptual systems, as externalizing, serving as a catalyst …

Virginia Commonwealth University Stormwater Management Plan, Jesse Harris Jan 2018

Virginia Commonwealth University Stormwater Management Plan, Jesse Harris

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Capstone Projects

Every year millions of gallons of polluted stormwater and untreated sanitary waste are discharged directly into the James River during combined sewer overflow events. This is a problem considering stormwater is one of the most significant sources of pollution to the nation’s surface waters.

The purpose of the VCU Stormwater Management Plan (VCU SWMP) is to reduce the impact of stormwater pollution using green infrastructure and low impact development best management practices like rain gardens, green roofs, and infiltration trenches. These stormwater control strategies present opportunities for VCU to reduce runoff and to preserve and restore green spaces on an …

Development Of Novel Models To Study Deep Brain Effects Of Cortical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Farheen Syeda Jan 2018

Development Of Novel Models To Study Deep Brain Effects Of Cortical Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Farheen Syeda

Theses and Dissertations

Neurological disorders require varying types and degrees of treatments depending on the symptoms and underlying causes of the disease. Patients suffering from medication-refractory symptoms often undergo further treatment in the form of brain stimulation, e.g. electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), or transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). These treatments are popular and have been shown to relieve various symptoms for patients with neurological conditions. However, the underlying effects of the stimulation, and subsequently the causes of symptom-relief, are not very well understood. In particular, TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation therapy which uses time-varying magnetic …

Modulation Of Electron Transport By Metformin In Cardiac Protection: Role Of Complex I, Ahmed Abdul Hussein Mohsin Jan 2018

Modulation Of Electron Transport By Metformin In Cardiac Protection: Role Of Complex I, Ahmed Abdul Hussein Mohsin

Theses and Dissertations

Modulation of mitochondrial complex I during reperfusion reduces cardiac injury. Complex I exists in two structural states: active (A) and deactive (D) with transition from A→D during ischemia. Reperfusion reactivates D→A with an increase in ROS production. Metformin preserves the D-Form. Our aim was to study the contribution of maintenance of deactivation of complex I during early reperfusion by metformin to protect against ischemia reperfusion injury. Our results showed that metformin decreased H9c2 cardiomyoblast apoptosis and total cell death following simulated ischemia for six hours followed by reoxygenation for twenty four hours compared to untreated cells. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) …

Fault Classification And Location Identification On Electrical Transmission Network Based On Machine Learning Methods, Vidya Venkatesh

Theses and Dissertations

Power transmission network is the most important link in the country’s energy system as they carry large amounts of power at high voltages from generators to substations. Modern power system is a complex network and requires high-speed, precise, and reliable protective system. Faults in power system are unavoidable and overhead transmission line faults are generally higher compare to other major components. They not only affect the reliability of the system but also cause widespread impact on the end users. Additionally, the complexity of protecting transmission line configurations increases with as the configurations get more complex. Therefore, prediction of faults (type …

Normative Data For Four Neuropsychological Tests In A Sample Of Adults Who Are Illiterate And From Latin America, Alejandra Morlett Paredes Jan 2018

Normative Data For Four Neuropsychological Tests In A Sample Of Adults Who Are Illiterate And From Latin America, Alejandra Morlett Paredes

Theses and Dissertations

Neuropsychological tests are standardized tasks used to measure psychological functioning that is associated with a particular brain structure. These tests often are used in diagnosing a cognitive deficiency resulting from brain injuries. Currently, there are a limited number of studies that have focused on standardization of neuropsychological tests in Latin America. Therefore, the vast majority of cognitive tests used in the evaluation of patients with brain damage have no normative parameters adjusted to the cultural characteristics of Latinos and Latinas. As a result, neuropsychological diagnoses among this population may be inadequate, and evaluation of rehabilitation program effectiveness limited. The importance …

Lurching From Complacency To Panic In The Fight Against Dangerous Microbes: A Blueprint For A Common Secure Future, Larry O. Gostin, Katharina E. Ó Cathaoir

Emory Law Journal

This Article proposes a new paradigm for global preparedness, rejecting the current narrow silos of health assistance, such as disease-specific interventions or eradication. Global health security requires economic investment, strong international institutions, resilient national health systems, targeted research and development, and effective communication with affected populations. We place particular emphasis on reform of the World Health Organization (WHO or Organization) and emergency response within the U.N. system. The values that ought to guide future action include cooperative action, shared responsibility, equity and fairness, and global norms that are respected and enforced.

The Pull Of Home: Revisiting Homi Bhabha And Stuart Hall Through Elefanten Im Garten And Au Pays, Varol Kahveci Jan 2018

The Pull Of Home: Revisiting Homi Bhabha And Stuart Hall Through Elefanten Im Garten And Au Pays, Varol Kahveci

Comparative Literature M.A. Essays

In this study I argue that existing theoretical frameworks and approaches evade, efface, ignore and obscure the role of “home” and “roots” for diasporic identities. I contend that while the models of identity draw attention to “hybridity,” the material ontology of the migrant body cannot be reduced to a mere psychological phenomenon of “hybridity.” My critique of the effacement of “home” in the contemporary post-colonial and migration studies problematizes Homi Bhabha and Stuart Hall by disputing the celebratory metaphorization of migrant subjects as fluid, uprooted, and deterritorialized. By revisiting certain terminologies, including “hybridity,” “liminality,” “in-betweenness,” “Third Space” from Bhabha’s The …

Examining The Interaction Between Stress Exposure And Stress Reactivity As Predictors Of Reward Sensitivity And Anhedonia Symptoms, Joshua Ahles Jan 2018

Examining The Interaction Between Stress Exposure And Stress Reactivity As Predictors Of Reward Sensitivity And Anhedonia Symptoms, Joshua Ahles

Clinical Psychology Dissertations

There is a well-documented relationship between stress and depression, although only recently has the field begun to articulate clear models regarding how stress exerts this effect. One prominent model highlights the disruptive impact of stress on reward processing, which relates to anhedonia – a cardinal symptom of depression. Vulnerability-stress models also play an important role in depression research and hold that individual differences in responses to stress may exacerbate the relationship between stress and depression. Pre-ejection period (PEP) reactivity to reward has been posited as an index of reward sensitivity and approach motivation and has been increasingly linked to depression. …

Making Babies With Cows, Scout Calvert Jan 2018

Making Babies With Cows, Scout Calvert

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The conceit of section one of this essay is partial role reversal. How would a doctor who was a cow explain to yearling interns how to breed humans? This is what a cow might sound like if she thought about humans the ways that human purebred livestock breeders think about cows. Section two switches back to a human perspective and treats the extensive interventions into cattle reproduction as the mundane options that they have become for many farmers. This essay highlights the traffic of reproductive technologies across the porous human-bovine species boundary.
