Repaglinide Inhibits Cyclosporine A-Induced Renal Tubular Toxicityby Affecting Apoptosis And Bax And Bcl-2 Expression, Jin Li, Hui Li, Qi Xiong Li, Ying Xue
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Repaglinide (RG) is a prandial glucose regulator used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Our recent study showed that RG plays an important role in cyclosporine A (CsA)-induced nephrotoxicity through its antioxidant properties. However, it is not known whether or not RG has any protective effect on CsA-induced renal tubular toxicity by affecting apoptosis and expression of apoptosis-associated protein. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of RG on CsA-induced renal tubule apoptosis and Bax and Bcl-2 protein expression in rats. Materials and methods: Forty male Sprague Dawley rats weighing 250-300 g were randomly divided …

Background/aim: We aimed to investigate the effect of long-term use of dexamethasone and prednisolone on the reversal effect of sugammadex. Materials and methods: TTwenty-four male Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups. Dexamethasone (600 µg/kg) was given to group D, prednisolone (10 mg/kg) was given to group P, and an equivalent volume of saline per day was administered intraperitoneally to group S for 14 days, respectively. The left hemidiaphragm with attached phrenic nerve was maintained in Krebs solution. Sugammadex (30 µmol/L) was applied while rocuronium (10 µmol/L) was present in an organ bath and a single twitch was obtained. …
Considerations Regarding The Digestive Development Of The Premature Neonate, Gretchen Clavey
Considerations Regarding The Digestive Development Of The Premature Neonate, Gretchen Clavey
A with Honors Projects
For most parents, adjusting to life with a typical newborn revolves around two main priorities: getting the baby sufficiently fed and watching for tell-tale signs of adequate digestion. Usually this does not involve much consideration for what is going on between the two ends of the digestive system. However, if the infant is born prematurely or needs to spend the start of life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), they find themselves thrust into a foreign world where life revolves around the baby’s fluid intake & output, oxygen saturations and heart rate. At this point, a conversation about the …

State wildlife conservation programs are essential to accomplishing the national goal of extinction prevention. By virtue of their constitutional powers, their expertise, and their on-the-ground personnel, states could—in theory—accomplish far more than the federal agencies directly responsible for implementing the Endangered Species Act (ESA). States plausibly argue that they can catalyze collaborative conservation that brings together key stakeholders to improve conditions for imperiled species. Bills to revise the ESA seek to delegate greater authority to states. We evaluated states’ imperiled species legislation to determine their legal capacity to employ the key regulatory tools that prompt collaborative conservation. All but four …

Judicial Intervention As Judicial Restraint, Luis Fuentes-Rohwer, Guy-Uriel E. Charles
Articles by Maurer Faculty
This paper examines the Court's decision in Gill v. Whitford. It advances two claims. First, it provides a comprehensive account of the Court's skepticism of judicial supervision of democratic politics, an account that we call the narrative of nonintervention. It situates Gill within that account and argues that the Court's reluctance to intervene is a function of the Court's institutional calculus that it ought to protect its legitimacy and institutional capital when it engages in what look like political fights. Second, the paper provides an instrumentalist account for judicial intervention. It argues that the Court should intervene to prevent partisan …

Nanopulse Stimulation (Nps) Induces Tumor Ablation And Immunity In Orthotopic 4t1 Mouse Breast Cancer: A Review, Stephen J. Beebe, Brittany P. Lassiter, Siqi Guo
Bioelectrics Publications
Nanopulse Stimulation (NPS) eliminates mouse and rat tumor types in several different animal models. NPS induces protective, vaccine-like effects after ablation of orthotopic rat N1-S1 hepatocellular carcinoma. Here we review some general concepts of NPS in the context of studies with mouse metastatic 4T1 mammary cancer showing that the postablation, vaccine-like effect is initiated by dynamic, multilayered immune mechanisms. NPS eliminates primary 4T1 tumors by inducing immunogenic, caspase-independent programmed cell death (PCD). With lower electric fields, like those peripheral to the primary treatment zone, NPS can activate dendritic cells (DCs). The activation of DCs by dead/dying cells leads to increases …

Pseudomonas And Burkholderia Inhibit Growth And Asexual Development Of Phytophthora Capsici, Amena Khatun, Tarin Farhana, Abdullah As Sabir, Shah Mohammad Naimul Islam, Helen M. West, Mahfuzur Rahman, Tofazzal Islam
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The objective of this study was to isolate and characterize antagonistic rhizobacteria from chili against a notorious phytopathogen Phytophthora capsici. Among the 48 bacteria isolated, BTLbbc-02, BTLbbc-03, and BTLbbc-05 were selected based on their inhibitory activity against P. capsici. They were tentatively identified as Burkholderia metallica BTLbbc-02, Burkholderia cepacia BTLbbc-03, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa BTLbbc-05, respectively, based on their 16S rRNA gene sequencing. All inhibited the growth of P. capsici at varying levels by inducing characteristic morphological alterations of P. capsici hyphae. The cell-free culture supernatant of all three isolates impaired motility (up to 100%) and caused lysis …
Cultural Effects On Mental Health In Dreaming In Cuban Christina, E’Vaan Duncan
Cultural Effects On Mental Health In Dreaming In Cuban Christina, E’Vaan Duncan
Undergraduate Research Awards
Christina García’s Dreaming in Cuban examines the lives of a dysfunctional Cuban family separated by generations and geographic locations. The tensions that hamper the relationships between relatives, as well as their own interpersonal reflections, vary across location and culture. These tensions—politics, region, immigrant status, and generation—impact the mental health of each character, and ultimately their futures and their fates. Different contexts enable readers to see why various family members deal with their traumas and emotions in different, often harmful, ways.

Between Heaven And Earth: Collective Memory Across Time And Place In The Quilts Of Harriet Powers, Ariel Rudy
Undergraduate Research Awards
Stitched among the the cotton squares of Harriet Powers’ two surviving quilts are centuries of memories, handed down through oral tradition, written text, and now in this case, through large scale works of textile art. Born a slave in 1830s Georgia and owned by a white woman, Powers life and legacy lay at the meeting point of numerous marginalized identities. She was enslaved, then later emancipated after the conclusion of the Civil War. She was a woman of African descent living in the American south as a devout Christian. At the center of these numerous and varied adjectives used by …
The Influence Of Resting State Functional Connectivity On Personality Traits In Adolescents And Young Adults, Brandon Vaughan
The Influence Of Resting State Functional Connectivity On Personality Traits In Adolescents And Young Adults, Brandon Vaughan
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The neurobiological basis of individual differences in personality is still poorly understood. Previous research has previously linked personality traits to risk factors for developing mental illness or engaging in high-risk behavior. Previous research has also linked personality traits to individual differences in resting state functional connectivity, which describes regional interactions in the brain when a person is not engaged in an active task. This study aimed to apply a theory of personality derived from behavioral neuroscience and ethology known as Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) to the characterization of brain networks underlying personality. RST defines four motivational systems in the brain, …

Responses to epidemics, pandemics, and other biological disasters require multiple coordinated initiatives that combine sophisticated planning, sound emergency management, effective stockpiles, solid geographic information systems, well-developed laboratory surveillance and response, and effective management capabilities. Critical to the noted elements of planning and response is the existence of a legal structure, which underpins the operations of necessary programs. While the law may not be the first public health tool considered in a disaster, it is fundamental to the effective functioning of multiple actors and must be harmonized across jurisdictional lines. This article explores the role of law in pandemics and other …

Blaming The Victim: Deconstructing María De Zayas's Feminism, Jennifer Zundel
Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts
María de Zayas y Sotomayor (1591 – 1661?) was the best-selling author of two extant collections of novellas, Novelas Amorosas y Ejemplares (Exemplary Tales of Love) (1637) and Desengaños Amorosos (The Disenchantments of Love) (1647). Both collections, consisting of stories of love, marriage, and gendered violence between aristocratic men and women, are explicitly and unapologetically pro-woman. Zayas condemns systemic misogyny and calls for institutional inclusion and protection of women, earning her place as an early modern feminist. Despite her depictions of violence against women and her denunciation of patriarchal institutions, Zayas does not advocate for a radical restructuring of society. …

Assessing Kenya’S Cooperative Model Of Devolution: A Situation-Specific Analysis, James T. Gathii, Harrison Mbori Otieno
Faculty Publications & Other Works
Kenya’s form of quasi-federalism termed devolution was introduced under the Constitution of Kenya (2010) (‘2010 Constitution’). This governance system establishes 47 county governments which are constitutionally independent sub-national units with direct election of county level leaders. Given the complexity of devolution’s relationship to national politics, as well as the broad variation in how devolution has unfolded in the 47 counties since 2013, this article argues in favour of a situation-specific assessment of devolution in Kenya. This analysis departs from the emerging scholarly consensus of devolution in Kenya represented in two predominant approaches. One approach contends that devolution in Kenya has …

Reducing Depression And Suicide Ideation Among College Students, Andrew Ritzel
Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)
Suicide rates have been on the rise for the past 30 years; 42,773 Americans dying every year by suicide. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death among all ages, but the second leading cause of death among Americans ages 15-24. College students traditionally fall within this age group, and are especially at risk for suicide due to stressful life conditions. The University of Kentucky, located centrally within Kentucky in the city of Lexington, is an ideal location for a suicide prevention intervention. Students demonstrated an increased rate of depression compared to the national population (15.13% of students surveyed reported …

A Funeral Procession From Venice To Milan: Death Rituals For A Late-Medieval Wealthy Merchant, Martina Saltamacchia
A Funeral Procession From Venice To Milan: Death Rituals For A Late-Medieval Wealthy Merchant, Martina Saltamacchia
Medieval/Renaissance Studies Faculty Publications
Toward the end of September 1394, news arrived in Milan of the death of merchant Marco Carelli in Venice. Three years before, the brilliant businessman had named the Fabbrica - the administrative body of the Cathedral of Milan - as heir of his entire fortune, which was estimated at the astonishing sum of 35,000 ducats. When, in 1392, total Cathedral income failed to cover its building expenses, threatening the continuation of the work, the Fabbrica turned to Carelli and asked him to consider, given the urgent necessities, advancing at least a part of the promised inheritance. The wealthy merchant did …

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Publications
Purpose – In an environment of constant technological change, the use of virtual teams has become commonplace for many organizations. Virtual teams (VTs) bring together dispersed individuals with varying knowledge and skill sets to accomplish tasks. VTs rely heavily on information technology as the medium for communication and coordination of work. The issue of establishing and maintaining trust in VTs poses challenges for these dispersed workers. Previous research has established that higher trusting teams have better cooperation and experience improved outcomes. We hope to contribute to the literature on trust in VTs by exploring how technology can facilitate high trusting …
