Climate Change, Resilience, And Population Dynamics In Pakistan: A Case Study Of The 2010 Floods In Mianwali District, Zeba Sathar, Muhammad Khalil, Sabahat Hussain, Maqsood Sadiq, Kiren Khan
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
In 2010, Pakistan experienced massive flooding that went on uninterrupted for more than eight weeks, and seriously affected more than 20 million people. This study explores the effects of the floods on one of the most adversely affected districts, Mianwali, in Punjab province. The study focuses on four areas pertaining to resilience: movements and migration processes; shifts in poverty levels and living conditions; changes in livelihood activities; and health-seeking behavior, particularly fertility-related processes. This study highlights the need to include demographic and health information in the analysis of natural disasters. The report marks the beginning of a research agenda that …

Community-Level Assessment Of Droughts In Odisha: Effects, Resilience, And Implications, Sangram Kishor Patel
Poverty, Gender, and Youth
India has been severely affected by drought—one-third of the country is either drought-prone or classified as desert. Odisha’s geographic location makes it vulnerable to various natural disasters and climatic risks so the Population Council conducted a study there to explore the impact of drought on people and their resilience, as well as examine the perceptions of state-level infrastructure and institutional initiatives to strengthen responses to droughts. The study found that farmers, laborers, and the poor are severely affected physically, financially, and psychologically as a result of consecutive droughts that have affected agriculture and livelihoods. The report notes a number of …

Local Residents’ Risk Perceptions In Response To Shale Gas Exploitation: Evidence From China, Chin-Hsien Yu, Shih-Kai Huang, Ping Qin, Xiaolan Chen
Research, Publications & Creative Work
In 2014, China became the world’s third country to accomplish shale gas commercial development, following the United States and Canada. China still however lacks a comprehensive analysis of its public’s concerns about potential environmental risks of shale gas exploration, particularly those of local residents near extraction sites. This paper specifically aims to explore risks perceived as associated with shale gas development in the Changning-Weiyuan area of Sichuan Basin, by conducting a face-to-face household survey with 730 participants interviewed. Some 86% of respondents reported their belief that shale gas exploitation causes more than three types of negative impacts, the most commonly …

Constructive Ambiguity And Judicial Development Of Insider Trading, Jill E. Fisch
Constructive Ambiguity And Judicial Development Of Insider Trading, Jill E. Fisch
SMU Law Review
The Texas Gulf Sulphur decision began what has become a fifty-year project of developing U.S. insider trading regulation through judicial law- making. During the course of that project, the courts developed a complex, fraud-based approach to determining the scope of liability. The approach has led, in many cases, to doctrinal uncertainty, a result that is reflected in the recent decisions in Newman, Salman, and Martoma.
In the face of this uncertainty, many commentators have called for a legislative solution. This article argues, however, that the true challenge of insider trading regulation is a lack of consensus about the appropriate scope …
From Equality To Duty: On Altering The Reach, Impact, And Meaning Of The Texas Gulf Legacy, Lisa M. Fairfax
From Equality To Duty: On Altering The Reach, Impact, And Meaning Of The Texas Gulf Legacy, Lisa M. Fairfax
SMU Law Review
As the first federal court decision to hold that insider trading represented a violation of the federal securities laws, the historical importance of SEC v. Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. is clear. However, its current relevance may not be so clear. This is because while there are some aspects of Texas Gulf that have endured and remain a fixture of federal insider trading jurisprudence, the Supreme Court has firmly repudiated the normative rationale for in- sider trading articulated by Texas Gulf. This essay contends that this repudiation has important descriptive and normative implications. Perhaps most importantly, this essay contends that Texas …

“Heal Thyself.”—An Argument For Granting Asylum To Healthcare Workers Persecuted During The 2014 West African Ebola Crisis, Bethany Echols
SMU Law Review
This article argues for a change in United States asylum policy at a time when change is needed most. Those seeking asylum must prove that they fear persecution in their home country based on one of five protected categories and that their government is the persecutor or is unable to control the actions of the persecutors. Multiple articles have recognized that the “particular social group” is the most difficult category of asylum seeker to analyze. Not only do the standards for particular social groups (PSGs) vary among circuit courts, but judicial consistency is lacking.
This article focuses on a particular …

The Effect Of Green Tea Waste Extract On Ruminal Degradability And Intestinal Digestibility Of Barley Grain, Mohammad Nasehi, Nor Mohammad Torbatinejad, Morteza Rezaie, Taghi Ghoorchi
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of green tea waste extract (GE) on ruminal degradability and intestinal digestibility of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), and starch of barley grain. Therefore, barley grain was treated with 0 as control, and 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of GE. The potential of DM degradability (a + b) of barley grain treated with 15% and 20% of GE was significantly lower compared to other treatments (Linear [L] P < 0.05). The lowest (a + b) fraction of CP degradability was found in the barley grain treated with 20% GE (L P < 0.05). The (a + b) fraction and effective degradability of starch in barley grain treated with 15% and 20% of GE were significantly lower than those in other treatments (L and quadratic [Q] P < 0.05). The highest intestinal DM, CP, and starch digestibility were associated with barley grain treated with 10% GE (L and Q P < 0.05). Based on recent results, processing barley grain with GE leads to a decrease of DM, CP, and starch degradability. The treatment of 10% GE improved intestinal digestibility of the aforementioned nutrients; therefore, it can be used to protect barley grain against ruminal degradability.
