The Rise Of Eco-Tourism In Costa Rica And Its Effects, Jessa Schultis

Undergraduate Research Journal

The Costa Rica Tourism Board’s website is covered with pictures of the beautiful landscapes Costa Rica is known for. It advertises activities such as horseback riding, hiking in forests, and guided bird watching tours under the impressive “eco-tourism” section of its website (“Essential Costa Rica”). Costa Rica is often considered a “successful” Latin American country, with relatively low levels of poverty and violence, a high GDP, and one of the highest Human Development Indexes (HDI) in Latin America. Costa Rica currently has a booming eco-tourism industry important to the Costa Rican economy. The environment in Costa Rica is not only …

Introduction: The prevalence of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs) continues to increase. Bloodstream infection (BSI) is a severe secondary complication of ABSSSI. The objective of this study was to determine clinical and sociodemographic risk factors for BSI in patients with acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSIs) and to determine if sociodemographic factors impact severity at presentation. Methods This was a retrospective unmatched (1:1) case-control study. Predictors of BSI and severe infection were sought through multivariable logistic regression analyses. Cases and controls were collected from two major medical centers located in downtown Detroit, Michigan: the Detroit …

Conceptual Framework For A Curriculum In Social Change, Iris M. Yob Jan 2018

Conceptual Framework For A Curriculum In Social Change, Iris M. Yob

Walden Faculty and Staff Publications

Colleges, universities, and many high schools are expressing their mission in terms of creating social change or contributing to the common good. Such a mission suggests that if they are going to graduate students who will fulfill this mission, they will need to consider how they will best prepare students to do this. The conceptual framework for a curriculum in social change in this article offers a holistic approach, taking into account what a student should know, be able to do, and what values and attitudes should be nurtured. To that end, the article identifies three competencies in the knowledge …

It Wasn’T Us: Reply To Michael Brent, Rick Repetti Jan 2018

It Wasn’T Us: Reply To Michael Brent, Rick Repetti

Publications and Research

In “Confessions of a Deluded Westerner,” Michael Brent insists no contributions to Buddhist Perspectives on Free Will (Repetti) even address free will because none deploy the criteria for free will that Western (incompatibilist) philosophers identify: the ability to do otherwise under identical conditions, and the ability to have one’s choices be up to oneself. Brent claims the criteria and abilities in that anthology are criteria for intentional action, but not all intentional actions are free. He also insists that Buddhism, ironically, cannot even accept intentional action, because, on his analysis, intentionality requires an agent, which Buddhism rejects. …

It Wasn’T Me: Reply To Karin Meyers, Rick Repetti

Publications and Research

This is my reply to Karin Meyers, “False Friends: Dependent Origination and the Perils of Analogy in Cross-Cultural Philosophy,” in this Symposium. Meyers generally focuses on exegesis of what Early Buddhists said, which reasonably constrains what we may think about them if we are Buddhists. I agree with and find much value in most of her astute analyses, here and elsewhere, so I restrict my reply here to where we disagree, or otherwise seem to be speaking past, or misunderstanding, each other. In this regard, I focus on three of her claims. Meyers argues that (1) Buddhist dependent origination …

Emancipatory Learning, Open Educational Resources, Open Education, And Digital Critical Participatory Action Research, Jason Leggett, Jay Wen, Anthony Chatman

Publications and Research

Given that we must prepare students for the future workforce today how can we use the power of Open Educational Resources (OERs) and Digital Social Science research to improve student learning and help students develop technical skills needed for the high-tech workforce? In this article, we use transformative learning theory (Mezirow, 1978) and Digital + Critical Participatory Action Research (D+CPAR) to analyze the effectiveness of integrating OERs into a course and reflect on how we used OERs to support student learning and make civic engagement more equitable at an urban community college. In a criminal justice course analyzing the legal …

Catching Chances: The Movement To Be On The Ground And Research Ready Before An Outbreak, David Brett-Major, James V. Lawler Jan 2018

Catching Chances: The Movement To Be On The Ground And Research Ready Before An Outbreak, David Brett-Major, James V. Lawler

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

After more than 28,000 Ebola virus disease cases and at least 11,000 deaths in West Africa during the 2014⁻2016 epidemic, the world remains without a licensed vaccine or therapeutic broadly available and demonstrated to alleviate suffering. This deficiency has been felt acutely in the two, short, following years with two Ebola virus outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and a Marburg virus outbreak in Uganda. Despite billions of U.S. dollars invested in developing medical countermeasures for filoviruses in the antecedent decades, resulting in an array of preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic products, none are available on commercial shelves. This …

#Cut/Paste+Bleed: Entangling Feminist Affect, Action And Production On And Offline, Alexandra Juhasz

Publications and Research

I consider my media praxis project to be labs, encounters, theory-making and scholarly output where doing and thinking in community (often the classroom and its linked spaces) in the sites or technologies under consideration is the “scholarly” product. That is to say, the doing and the process is the product, and what remains can also be shared and/or evaluated, as needed. This sharing of process is what I model now. I describe my most recent project, Ev-Ent-Anglement, engaging again critically with social media networks from inside them, share some of my lessons learned about production and action-based New Media/DH research, …

A Solution In Search Of A Problem At The Biologics Frontier, Erika Lietzan Jan 2018

A Solution In Search Of A Problem At The Biologics Frontier, Erika Lietzan

Faculty Publications

This short paper comments on Professor Carrier's new article, Biologics: The New Antitrust Frontier. His article makes a profound initial contribution to a new area of scholarship, based on a large body of prior work considering antitrust issues relating to small molecule drugs. But Professor Carrier’s article, like my own forthcoming piece on innovation and competition in the biologics marketplace, is inherently speculative. We are making our best judgments about the nature of a still emerging marketplace and likely conduct in that marketplace, based on our understandings of a new regulatory framework that is itself still emerging, the broader legal …

Venom Proteomics And Antivenom Neutralization For The Chinese Eastern Russell’S Viper, Daboia Siamensis From Guangxi And Taiwan, K.Y. Tan, N.H. Tan, C.H. Tan Jan 2018

Venom Proteomics And Antivenom Neutralization For The Chinese Eastern Russell’S Viper, Daboia Siamensis From Guangxi And Taiwan, K.Y. Tan, N.H. Tan, C.H. Tan

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

The eastern Russell's viper (Daboia siamensis) causes primarily hemotoxic envenomation. Applying shotgun proteomic approach, the present study unveiled the protein complexity and geographical variation of eastern D. siamensis venoms originated from Guangxi and Taiwan. The snake venoms from the two geographical locales shared comparable expression of major proteins notwithstanding variability in their toxin proteoforms. More than 90% of total venom proteins belong to the toxin families of Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitor, phospholipase A2, C-type lectin/lectin-like protein, serine protease and metalloproteinase. Daboia siamensis Monovalent Antivenom produced in Taiwan (DsMAV-Taiwan) was immunoreactive toward the Guangxi D. siamensis venom, and effectively neutralized the …

3′,4′-Dihydroxyflavonol Ameliorates Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Induced Apoptosis And Endothelial Dysfunction In Mice, Y.S. Lau, Mohd Rais Mustafa, K.W. Choy, S.M.H. Chan, S. Potocnik, T.P. Herbert, O.L. Woodman Jan 2018

3′,4′-Dihydroxyflavonol Ameliorates Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Induced Apoptosis And Endothelial Dysfunction In Mice, Y.S. Lau, Mohd Rais Mustafa, K.W. Choy, S.M.H. Chan, S. Potocnik, T.P. Herbert, O.L. Woodman

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has been implicated in the development of hypertension 3 through the induction of endothelial impairment. As 3′,4′-dihydroxyflavonol (DiOHF) 4 reduces vascular injury caused by ischaemia/reperfusion or diabetes, and flavonols have been demonstrated to attenuate ER stress, we investigated whether DiOHF can protect mice from ER stress-induced endothelial dysfunction. Male C57BLK/6 J mice were injected with tunicamycin to induce ER stress in the presence or absence of either DiOHF or tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA), an inhibitor of ER stress. Tunicamycin elevated blood pressure and impaired endothelium-dependent relaxation. Moreover, in aortae there was evidence of ER stress, oxidative stress …

Methods: Twelve adult sheep were randomly divided into two groups (each n = 6): a control group, where no treatment was administered, and a treatment group, where buccal and palatal corticotomy-assisted maxillary expansion was performed. CBCT scans were taken before (T1) and after (T2) treatment. Differences in all transverse dental and alveolar dimensions, alveolar width at crest level, hard palate level, horizontal bone loss, interdental cusp width and inter-root apex were assessed using …

Amenable Epigenetic Traits Of Dental Pulp Stem Cells Underlie High Capability Of Xeno-Free Episomal Reprogramming, S.T. Chandrabose, S. Sriram, S. Subramanian, S.S. Cheng, W.K. Ong, S. Rozen, N.H. Abu Kasim, S. Sugii Jan 2018

Amenable Epigenetic Traits Of Dental Pulp Stem Cells Underlie High Capability Of Xeno-Free Episomal Reprogramming, S.T. Chandrabose, S. Sriram, S. Subramanian, S.S. Cheng, W.K. Ong, S. Rozen, N.H. Abu Kasim, S. Sugii

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

Background: While a shift towards non-viral and animal component-free methods of generating induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells is preferred for safer clinical applications, there is still a shortage of reliable cell sources and protocols for efficient reprogramming. Methods: Here, we show a robust episomal and xeno-free reprogramming strategy for human iPS generation from dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) which renders good efficiency (0.19%) over a short time frame (13-18 days). Results: The robustness of DPSCs as starting cells for iPS induction is found due to their exceptional inherent stemness properties, developmental origin from neural crest cells, specification for tissue commitment, …

An In Vitro Potency Assay Using Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Binding Works Well With Antivenoms Against Bungarus Candidus And Naja Naja, K. Ratanabanangkoon, P. Simsiriwong, K. Pruksaphon, K.Y. Tan, B. Chantrathonkul, S. Eursakun, C.H. Tan Jan 2018

An In Vitro Potency Assay Using Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Binding Works Well With Antivenoms Against Bungarus Candidus And Naja Naja, K. Ratanabanangkoon, P. Simsiriwong, K. Pruksaphon, K.Y. Tan, B. Chantrathonkul, S. Eursakun, C.H. Tan

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

In order to facilitate/expedite the production of effective and affordable snake antivenoms, a novel in vitro potency assay was previously developed. The assay is based on an antiserum's ability to bind to postsynaptic neurotoxin (PSNT) and thereby inhibit the PSNT binding to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR). The assay was shown to work well with antiserum against Thai Naja kaouthia which produces predominantly the lethal PSNTs. In this work, the assay is demonstrated to work well with antiserum/antivenom against Bungarus candidus (BC), which also produces lethal presynaptic neurotoxins, as well as antivenom against Sri Lankan Naja naja (NN), which produces …

Fiber Density Of Collagen Grafts Impacts Rabbit Urethral Regeneration, H.M. Larsson, G. Vythilingam, K. Pinnagoda, E. Vardar, E.M. Engelhardt, S. Sothilingam, R.C. Thambidorai, Tunku Kamarul, J.A. Hubbell, P. Frey

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

There is a need for efficient and "off-The-shelf" grafts in urethral reconstructive surgery. Currently available surgical techniques require harvesting of grafts from autologous sites, with increased risk of surgical complications and added patient discomfort. Therefore, a cost-effective and cell-free graft with adequate regenerative potential has a great chance to be translated into clinical practice. Tubular cell-free collagen grafts were prepared by varying the collagen density and fiber distribution, thereby creating a polarized low fiber density collagen graft (LD-graft). A uniform, high fiber density collagen graft (HD-graft) was engineered as a control. These two grafts were implanted to bridge a 2 …

Research Publications (2016 to 2020)

The weaver ant Oecophylla smaragdina is an aggressive predator of other arthropods and has been employed as a biological control agent against many insect pests in plantations. Despite playing important roles in pest management, information about the microbiota of O. smaragdina is limited. In this work, a number of O. smaragdina colonies (n = 12) from Malaysia had been studied on their microbiome profile using Illumina 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. We characterized the core microbiota associated with these O. smaragdina and investigated variation between colonies from different environments. Across all 12 samples, 97.8% of the sequences were assigned to …
