Encoding Of Emotional Valence In Wild Boar (Sus Scrofa) Calls, Anne-Laure Maigrot, Edna Hillmann, Elodie Briefer Jan 2018

Encoding Of Emotional Valence In Wild Boar (Sus Scrofa) Calls, Anne-Laure Maigrot, Edna Hillmann, Elodie Briefer

Bioacoustics Collection

Measuring emotions in nonhuman mammals is challenging. As animals are not able to verbally report how they feel, we need to find reliable indicators to assess their emotional state. Emotions can be described using two key dimensions: valence (negative or positive) and arousal (bodily activation or excitation). In this study, we investigated vocal expression of emotional valence in wild boars (Sus scrofa). The animals were observed in three naturally occurring situations: anticipation of a food reward (positive), affiliative interactions (positive), and agonistic interactions (negative). Body movement was used as an indicator of emotional arousal to control for the effect of …

Mental Stress From Animal Experiments: A Survey With Korean Researchers, Minji Kang, Ahram Han, Da-Eun Kim, Troy Seidle, Kyung-Min Lim, Seungjin Bae

Morality and Ethics of Animal Experimentation Collection

Animal experiments have been widely conducted in the life sciences for more than a century, and have long been a subject of ethical and societal controversy due to the deliberate infliction of harm upon sentient animals. However, the harmful use of animals may also negatively impact the mental health of researchers themselves. We sought to evaluate the anxiety level of researchers engaged in animal use to analyse the mental stress from animal testing. The State Anxiety Scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to evaluate how researchers feel when they conduct animal, as opposed to non-animal, based experiments …

Disability And Inclusive Communities (Calvin Shorts), Kevin Timpe Jan 2018

Disability And Inclusive Communities (Calvin Shorts), Kevin Timpe

Calvin Press

Disability and Inclusive Communities intends to help readers learn how to build communities that fully include people with disabilities. Often our social practices unintentionally exclude those with disabilities by making it difficult for them to fully participate in the community. These practices hurt those whom we exclude. But they are also bad for our communities as a whole. Our communities—from our churches to our schools to our workplaces—are worse off when we exclude those with disabilities. We miss out on the opportunity to learn from complex, complete human beings who experience life in different ways. We miss out on becoming …

Sport Faith Life (Calvin Shorts), Brian R. Bolt

Calvin Press

Sport is something we do, an experience that is hard to describe because it captures our whole selves. Sport draws us in and brings us back, day after day, season after season. We love to play--and yes, to win. Sport can train us, educate us, change us for better or for worse, but that is really not the point. First and foremost, sport is part of a truly abundant human life that Jesus Christ offers for those who love to play. God's world includes the myth-like space where sport resides, where we celebrate our humanness, our desire to be excellent, …

More Than An Academic Question: Defining Student Ownership Of Intellectual Property Rights, Kurt M. Saunders, Michael A. Lozano Jan 2018

More Than An Academic Question: Defining Student Ownership Of Intellectual Property Rights, Kurt M. Saunders, Michael A. Lozano

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Intellectual property is increasingly important due to technology’s rapid development. The importance of intellectual property is also reflected within universities as traditional centers of research and expression, where students and faculty are encouraged to develop inventions and creative works throughout the educational experience. The commercialization potential of the intellectual property that emerges from these efforts has led many universities to adopt policies to determine ownership of intellectual property rights. Many of these policies take different approaches to ownership, and most students are unaware of their rights and are unlikely to consider whether the university has a claim to ownership. The …

Four Hapten Spacer Sites Modulating Class Specificity: Nondirectional Multianalyte Immunoassay For 31 Β-Agonists And Analogues., Lanteng Wang, Wenmeng Jiang, Xing Shen, Xiangmei Li, Xin-An Huang, Zhenlin Xu, Yuanming Sun, Shun-Wan Chan, Lingwen Zeng, Eremin Sergei Alexandrovich, Hongtao Lei

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

Immunoassay methods are important for monitoring β-agonists illegally used for reducing animal fat deposition in livestock. However, there is no simultaneous screening surveillance immunoassay for detecting various β-agonist chemicals that are possibly present in food. In this study, through the use of an R-(−)-salbutamol derivative as the immunizing hapten, an antibody recognizing 31 β-agonists and analogues was generated for the first time. Three-dimensional quantitative structure–activity relationship (3D QSAR) revealed that strong steric and hydrophobic fields around the hapten spacer near C-2, as well as a chirality at C-1′, dominantly modulated the class specificity of the raised antibody. However, a hapten …

Investigation On The Regeneration And Corrosion Characteristics Of An Anodized Aluminum Plate Regenerator., Tao Wen, Lin Lu, Hongxing Yang, Yimo Luo

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

The traditional vapor compression cooling system (VCS) has been criticized for its heavy reliance on electricity consumption and limited control ability of humidity. Compared with the VCS, the liquid desiccant cooling system (LDCS) is more efficient by handling the sensible and latent load separately. The present study investigated the regeneration and corrosion characteristics of an anodized aluminum plate regenerator for the first time. Comparative tests were conducted to present the regeneration and corrosion characteristics of the normal and anodized regenerator. The influence of internal heating on the regeneration performance was also identified. The results showed that the corrosion rate was …

A Parameter Study Of The Effect Of A Plasma-Induced Ozone Colour-Fading Process On Sulphur-Dyed Cotton Fabric, Dan Zhong, Yao Hui Liu, Ngan Ting Cheung, Chi Wai Kan, Hong Chua Jan 2018

A Parameter Study Of The Effect Of A Plasma-Induced Ozone Colour-Fading Process On Sulphur-Dyed Cotton Fabric, Dan Zhong, Yao Hui Liu, Ngan Ting Cheung, Chi Wai Kan, Hong Chua

Faculty of Science & Technology (THEi)

A plasma-induced ozone colour-fading treatment was used for treating a blue sulphur-dyed knitted cotton fabric. Since the process parameters of plasma-induced ozone colour-fading treatment are inter-related with one other, the final colour-fading results are affected. An orthogonal array testing strategy (OATS) method was used for determining the optimum conditions of the plasmainduced ozone colour-fading treatment in this study. Three process parameters used in the plasmainduced ozone colour-fading treatment, i.e., oxygen gas concentration (%), water content in fabric (%), and treatment time (minutes), were used in the optimization process. Experimental results reveal the optimum conditions for fading the colour by plasma-induced …

Neighborhood Variation Of Sustainable Urban Morphologicalcharacteristics, P. C. Lai, Sissi Si Chen, C. T. Low, Ester Cerin, Robert Stimson, Py Paulina Wong

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Compact cities and their urban forms have implications on sustainable city development because of high density urban settlement, increased accessibility, and a balanced land use mix. This paper uses quantitative means of understanding urban morphological characteristics with reference to the differing qualities of the urban form (i.e., street patterns, building volumes, land uses and greenery). The results, based on 89 neighborhood communities of Hong Kong, show varying degrees of regional differences in the urban built form supported by numerical statistics and graphical illustrations. This paper offers empirical evidence on some morphological characteristics that can be estimated objectively using modern geospatial …

Physical Activity And Physical Fitness Of Adults With Intellectual Disabilities In Group Homes In Hong Kong, Bik C. Chow, Peggy H.N. Choi, Wendy Y.J. Huang

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) typically have a sedentary lifestyle and higher rates of overweight and obesity. This study describes the habitual daily physical activity (PA) and the health-related physical fitness (PF) of adults with mild and moderate ID who resided in four group homes and worked in sheltered workshops. We also assessed the contribution of PF variables towards PA levels and sedentary behavior of this population subgroup. Adults with mild and moderate ID (N = 114) were assessed on PF tests (percent body fat, waist and hip circumferences, 6-min walk (6MWT), arm curl, and sit and reach). PA and …

Sourcing Enchantment: From Elemental Appropriation To Imaginal Symbolics, Schwartz, Michael Jan 2018

Sourcing Enchantment: From Elemental Appropriation To Imaginal Symbolics, Schwartz, Michael

CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century

Critical theorists and social commentators agree that modernity and postmodernity suffer from historical pathologies of world disenchantment. What might be done? Drawing on John Sallis’ phenomenology of the elemental and Tibetan Buddhist teachings on elemental practices, this paper investigates the imagination in its doubling as imaginal in generating a symbolics of the self, world, and other that is always already enchanted; an aesthetics of existence where the world itself shows forth like a work of art replete with exorbitant logics.

A Single Differential Equation Description Of Membrane Properties Underlying The Action Potential And The Axon Electric Field, Robert Melendy Jan 2018

A Single Differential Equation Description Of Membrane Properties Underlying The Action Potential And The Axon Electric Field, Robert Melendy

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

In a succession of articles published over 65 years ago, Sir Alan Lloyd Hodgkin and Sir Andrew Fielding Huxley established what now forms our physical understanding of excitation in nerve, and how the axon conducts the action potential. They uniquely quantified the movement of ions in the nerve cell during the action potential, and demonstrated that the action potential is the result of a depolarizing event across the cell membrane. They confirmed that a complete depolarization event is followed by an abrupt increase in voltage that propagates longitudinally along the axon, accompanied by considerable increases in membrane conductance. In an …

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Background
De novo heterozygous assembly is an ongoing challenge requiring improved assembly approaches. In this study, three strategies were used to develop de novo Vitis vinifera ‘Sultanina’ genome assemblies for comparison with the inbred V. vinifera (PN40024 12X.v2) reference genome and a published Sultanina ALLPATHS-LG assembly (AP). The strategies were: 1) a default PLATANUS assembly (PLAT_d) for direct comparison with AP assembly, 2) an iterative merging strategy using METASSEMBLER to combine PLAT_d and AP assemblies (MERGE) and 3) PLATANUS parameter modifications plus GapCloser (PLAT*_GC).
Results
The three new assemblies were greater in size than the AP assembly. PLAT*_GC had the …

New School: Can We Rethink Education For An Inclusive Future?, Chris Oestereich Jan 2018

New School: Can We Rethink Education For An Inclusive Future?, Chris Oestereich

Social Space

It is not always easy to give career advice to young people. In my time, there were virtual paths laid out for youths. Most of them started similarly. Go to school. Work hard. Get good grades. Squeeze in admirable activities. Decide what you want to be for the rest of your life. (The last bit was tricky.) Based on these, people chose a fork in the road that they believed would suit them and then made the best of it, earned a degree and then set off to start their careers. Not everyone had the chance to head down these …
