“From Bars To Becoming”: Exploring Identity Change Across Prison Programming, Evan W. Saunders Oct 2025

“From Bars To Becoming”: Exploring Identity Change Across Prison Programming, Evan W. Saunders

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Self-identity plays a pivotal role in one’s day-to-day life, impacting their behaviors and ambitions, but what is conducive to a change in identity is often underdeveloped. Mechanisms that lead incarcerated individuals to both a shift in identity and desistance away from crime are both underdeveloped as well. The current study examines the impact of programming on identity and the relationship between identity and recidivism. A sample of individuals participating in a reentry prison program responded to 16 statements that evaluated their perceptions of their Overall Self-Identity, Current Self, Feared Self, and Positive Possible Self at the beginning and end of …

A Political Ecological Exploration Of The Caracol Road Project In Belize, Lorenzo A. Pantano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The Caracol Road Project is a new BZ$148,100,000 (US$74,050,000) road infrastructure development in the Cayo District of Belize and financed largely by foreign sovereign wealth funds. The areas adjacent to the road, broken into two phases include: communities, forest reserves, national parks, recreational areas, private lands and estates, and archaeological sites. This paper seeks to ask the questions: (i) For whom is the CRP being developed? (ii) For what is the CRP being developed? (iii) What visual evidence exists of sacrifice zones because of the production of the CRP? I sought to answer these questions through ethnographic observations, interviews, and …

The history of colonialism in the American West is not just the story of how European people, animals, and technologies invaded Indigenous worlds but also of how these things were engaged, redeployed, countered, rejected, and, in some cases, embraced by native communities. In this paper, I look beyond the horses, guns, germs, and steel that have dominated materialist analyses of the colonial encounter to consider the circulation of images—or more precisely, the circulation of new understandings of what images are and how they function. My focus is on the “Biographic Tradition,” an …

Mycobacterium avium is an opportunistic pathogen and a leading contributor to nontuberculous mycobacterial infections in immunocompromised individuals. However, treatment duration, antibiotic toxicity, and resistance present challenges in the management of mycobacterium infections, prompting the need for novel treatment. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has demonstrated potent antimycobacterial activity, while antimicrobial peptides such as the cyclic [R4W4] have shown additive effects when combined with first-line antibiotics. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism and efficacy of NAC and [R4W4] combination therapy against M. avium. A membrane depolarization assay was used to evaluate the effects of …

Compromised Pressure-Generating Capacity Of Diaphragmatic Muscle And Its Interaction With The Lower Rib Cage At High Lung Volume During Airway Occlusion, Aladin M Boriek, Noralis Rodriguez-Santiago, Sanghyun Kim, Aubri Ford, Shari Wynd, Rolf D Hubmayr Oct 2025

Compromised Pressure-Generating Capacity Of Diaphragmatic Muscle And Its Interaction With The Lower Rib Cage At High Lung Volume During Airway Occlusion, Aladin M Boriek, Noralis Rodriguez-Santiago, Sanghyun Kim, Aubri Ford, Shari Wynd, Rolf D Hubmayr

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The pressure generating capacity of the diaphragm is generally thought to be compromised at high lung volume either due to loss of curvature or loss of its membrane tension. At a state of hyperinflation during airway occlusion at total lung capacity, the diaphragmatic muscle is forced to contract from an initial shorter length, the zone of apposition narrows, insertional force on the chest wall is reduced and abdominal compliance falls. We hypothesize that these altered mechanical conditions at high lung volume lead to a loss of the pressure generating capacity that is mediated by excessive muscle shortening rather than loss …

Background: Previous genomic efforts on chromosome 9p deletion and duplication syndromes have utilized low-resolution strategies (i.e., karyotypes, chromosome microarrays). These studies have provided important initial insights into these syndromes. This current study is the first large-scale whole-genome sequencing (WGS) study of 100 individuals from families with chromosome 9p syndromes.

Methods: Through the newly formed 9P-ARCH (Advanced Research in Chromosomal Health: Genomic, Phenotypic, and Functional Aspects of 9p-Related syndromes) research network, we assembled a cohort of individuals from families with chromosome 9p syndromes. WGS was applied to 100 individuals, and other genomic technologies were applied to a subset of individuals. To …

Epigenetic inheritance alerts naïve descendants to prepare for stresses that could still be present, whereas distant descendants return to a basal state after several generations without stress. However, organisms are frequently exposed to stresses successively across generations. We found that parental hypoxia exposure increased P0 longevity, caused intergenerational lipid reduction, and elicited transgenerational fertility reduction that was dependent on generationally transmitted small RNAs. Here, we find that

Metastatic uveal melanomas are highly resistant to all existing treatments. To identify actionable vulnerabilities, we conducted a CRISPR-Cas9 knockout screen using a library composed of chromatin regulators. We revealed that the lysine methyltransferase, SETDB1, plays a critical role in metastatic uveal melanoma cell proliferation and survival. Functionally, SETDB1 deficiency induces a DNA damage response, senescence-like state and growth arrest. Knockdown of SETDB1 is associated with a decreased expression of genes related to replication and cell cycle. Moreover, deficiency in CDC6, an essential regulator of DNA replication, phenocopies SETDB1 inhibition. Using a pre-clinical model, we further demonstrated that anti-SETDB1 therapy impairs …

Wildlife populations are in decline due to human threats, including highways. Strategies for reducing road impacts on wildlife include wildlife fencing which keep animals off roads and wildlife crossing structures (WCSs) which provide safe passage across roads. Wildlife crossing structures are diverse and transportation managers are often interested in identifying which WCS designs are effective for target species so a model that predicts target species usage of WCSs is likely to be beneficial to managers and biologists. Wildlife crossing structures are typically built for select species but are utilized by other species, so it may be beneficial to examine WCS …

BACKGROUND: Total pancreatectomy can be associated with severe endocrine complications. This study compares endocrine outcomes of patients who underwent a single-stage total pancreatectomy versus a 2-stage completion pancreatectomy.

METHODS: We used data from a multi-institutional research network (TriNetX), which identified 1,079 propensity score-matched total pancreatectomy and completion pancreatectomy patient pairs for age, gender, and race. These data were validated by a single-center review of a prospectively maintained database of 1,600 pancreatectomies, from which 88 completion and total pancreatectomy patients treated between 2013 and 2023 were identified. The primary endpoints were postoperative rates of hypoglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis during the first …

Metabolic Insights Into Cyst Fluid Composition And The Role Of Taurine In Polycystic Kidney Disease, Vineetha Garimella Oct 2025

Metabolic Insights Into Cyst Fluid Composition And The Role Of Taurine In Polycystic Kidney Disease, Vineetha Garimella

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is the most common genetic disorder affecting kidneys and the fourth leading cause of kidney failure. It occurs in two major forms, autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD), and autosomal recessive PKD (ARPKD). ADPKD is typically adult-onset and caused by mutations in the PKD1 and PKD2 genes, and ARPKD generally manifests in utero and is caused by mutations in the PKHD1 gene. Despite the severity of the disease, only one FDA-approved drug, tolvaptan, is currently available for ADPKD and remains under clinical investigation for ARPKD. However, its use is limited by adverse side effects including polyuria, polydipsia, and …

Capacity Of Microbial Strains And Communities To Degrade Sewerage Fats, Oils, And Grease Clog Deposits, Allondra M. Woods, Catherine J. Pettinger, Catherine Harris, Tanya Soule, Garth Farley, Erica L.-W. Majumder

Biological Engineering Student Research

Fats, oils, and grease (FOG) deposits are hardened, sticky, insoluble solids that accumulate in sewage systems globally. These deposits contribute to pipe blockages and sanitary sewer overflows, releasing pathogens and pollutants into the environment, posing significant environmental and public health risks. Current removal methods are labor-intensive and costly, emphasizing the need for alternatives. While biological strategies offer a viable alternative, the microbial breakdown of FOG is poorly understood. In this study, we evaluated the potential of individual microbial strains and synthetic microbial communities to biodegrade wastewater-derived FOG deposit samples. These biological agents were applied to a range of FOG samples, …

Why some but not all patients with the rare disease Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) are at increased risk of poor cardiovascular outcome and death is unclear and unpredictable. We investigated the hypothesis that mitochondrial dysfunction in FRDA leads to altered patterns of myocardial metabolic substrate utilization. We recruited 5 healthy controls (Ctl) and 11 FRDA participants. All underwent fasting myocardial positron emission tomography (PET scan) with 15O–H2O, 18F-FDG, and 11C-Palmitate. We conducted cardiac transcriptomics on mice with ablation of the Frda gene in heart to explore mechanisms of fuel substrate utilization. Five (45%) FRDA participants had an LV mass index (LVMi) …

Leptin, a hormone primarily secreted by adipocytes, regulates energy balance and systemic metabolism through its interaction with the leptin receptor (LEPR). Beyond these functions, leptin signaling has been implicated in the pathogenesis of tissue fibrosis. Here, we report the x-ray crystal structures of a leptin-neutralizing antibody (hLep3) in the unbound and leptin-bound states. The interaction of this antibody with leptin mimics the interaction of the LEPR with leptin, providing direct insights into the mechanism by which the antibody disrupts leptin signaling. We furthermore evaluate the therapeutic potential of neutralizing leptin with this antibody across distinct mouse models of fibrosis affecting …

The Realities Of Roadkill: Challenges And Opportunities For Wildlife Transportation Mitigation, Rachel Wheat

PSU Transportation Seminars

Transportation infrastructure is critical for our communities and economies, but the roadways we depend on for travel have significant negative impacts on wildlife populations. Roadkill is the most visible consequence, with tens of millions of animals injured or killed on Oregon’s roadways each year. Beyond direct mortality, transportation corridors fragment habitat and can alter wildlife behavior, creating barriers that disrupt wildlife movement and access to critical resources, contributing to population declines. Despite these challenges, opportunities exist for mitigation, including the use of wildlife crossing structures, autonomous animal detection systems, and smarter project siting. This talk will explore the multifaceted challenges …

Perceptions Of Sustainable Agriculture In Western Wisconsin Among Current Dairy Farmers, Morgan Dekan, Ryan Weichelt Oct 2025

Perceptions Of Sustainable Agriculture In Western Wisconsin Among Current Dairy Farmers, Morgan Dekan, Ryan Weichelt

The Geographical Bulletin

Sustainable agriculture uses environmentally responsible farming practices to meet the needs of society without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. It is a form of farming that is concerned with the health of the farmland and surrounding environment and works to protect both. Wisconsin’s economy is reliant on farming, with over 64,000 farms generating over $104 billion annually for the state. Despite the state’s reliance on agriculture, there is a lack of research on sustainable farming in Wisconsin; therefore, this study sent surveys to hundreds of dairy farmers throughout western Wisconsin asking them about their perceptions …

On The Influence Of British/American English In The Dominican Society/A Revisited Edition, Pedro J. Tavarez-Dacosta Dr., Fransheska Arias Reyes Lic., Ivanna Del Pilar Tavarez Vasquez Mag.

FDLA Journal

The present work is a historical/linguistic account of an unprecedented fact regarding the existence of two English Speaking Communities [British English and American English], in our country the Dominican Republic, where Spanish is the official and most used language, to the extent of being considered a monolingual nation or country. It is analyzed here, on how the Hispaniola Island was split into two different territories due to different treaties (Aranjuez, Ryswick, among others), held in the old European Metropolis and how the island came to be a French Colony (the territory of what is Haiti now), a Haitian Creole/French speaking …

Personality Features And Efl Learning Process Within The Dominican Society Context, Pedro J. Tavarez-Dacosta Dr.

FDLA Journal

Through this work we are focusing on discussing the relationship between the Traits of Personality and the performance of Students in EFL Learning (introversion/extroversion and other determining factors of the educational Process) within the Dominican´s Society context as largely perceived by Teachers of English as a Foreign Language. There have been a great number of international studies already published which had tried to explain the effects of such features of the student's personality, mostly introversion/ extroversion on the student‘s performance in foreign language learning, something , which from the teacher‘s perception have always been presumed as an unquestionable fact. Although …
