The Effect Of Rem Sleep Deprivation On Spatial Memory In Male And Female Rats, Kaitlyn Heywood
The Effect Of Rem Sleep Deprivation On Spatial Memory In Male And Female Rats, Kaitlyn Heywood
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
It is important for an organism to excel in spatial memory abilities. An organism’s survival is dependent on their ability to navigate through their environment to find resources, such as food and water, while being able to navigate home safely. With how important it is to navigate an environment safely, it is important to investigate things that impact spatial memory, such as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation. Sleep research has primarily utilized male rodents to model sleep disturbances studies which cannot be easily studied in human participants. Research has been divided on whether four hours of REM sleep deprivation …
Microbiome Diversity Of Coastal Tidal Floodwater In Southeastern Florida, Marissa Wickes
Microbiome Diversity Of Coastal Tidal Floodwater In Southeastern Florida, Marissa Wickes
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Over 3.7 million people are in high risk of coastal flooding and live within 1 mile of high tide in the US alone. The Atlantic coast is one of the most vulnerable areas due to its low elevation, large population, and economic importance (Bray, et. al, 2016). Coastal municipalities in the region of Southeast Florida, such as the cities of Miami, Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, etc., are at especial risk from coastal flooding related to sea level rise. The US National Climate Assessment has named Miami, Florida as the economically most vulnerable city impacted by this sea level rise …

Optimization Of Bacterial Expression And Purification Of Nipsnap1 Protein, Jay Michael Yarbro
Optimization Of Bacterial Expression And Purification Of Nipsnap1 Protein, Jay Michael Yarbro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Nipsnap1 (4-nitrophenylphosphatase domain and non-neuronal SNAP25-like homolog 1) is a novel mitochondrial protein shown to interact with the intracellular domain of amyloid precursor protein (APP), one of the key biomarkers implicated in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology. A formerly developed expression strategy for Nipsnap1 based on the pET-28a expression system showed direct binding of purified recombinant Nipsnap1 to NAD+ and NADP+. This was further confirmed using Circular Dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, indicating that NAD+ binding produces a structural change in Nipsnap1.To address the low yield of Nipsnap1 protein in the former expression system, several approaches and conditions were evaluated in this study. …
Differentiation Of Oligodendrocytes For Myelination In The Nervous System, Krishna Deo Sharma
Differentiation Of Oligodendrocytes For Myelination In The Nervous System, Krishna Deo Sharma
Student Theses and Dissertations
Differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) into large a number of oligodendrocytes (ODCs) for transplantation therapy has been a challenge. Evidence indicates that NSC differentiation is influenced by the interaction of the stem cells and their extracellular environment such as extracellular matrix (ECM), and soluble factors, such as growth factors and hormones. We tested if (1) well planned sequential addition of a combination of soluble factors increase the population of NSCs differentiating into ODCs and (2) a natural ECM (e.g, matrigel) promotes ODC differentiation better than poly-D-lysine (PDL). Embryonic rat NSCs were propagated in the presence of basic fibroblast growth …

Legitimate Yet Manipulative: The Conundrum Of Open-Market Manipulation, Gina-Gail S. Fletcher
Legitimate Yet Manipulative: The Conundrum Of Open-Market Manipulation, Gina-Gail S. Fletcher
Duke Law Journal
Is manipulation possible in the absence of misconduct? This is the foundational inquiry at the heart of open-market manipulation. Open-market manipulation captures the attention of lawmakers and courts because it is market manipulation effected entirely through facially legitimate transactions. Whereas traditional, well-accepted forms of market manipulation involve deception, fraud, and monopolistic prices, open-market manipulation involves no objectively bad acts and, instead, is accomplished through permissible transactions executed on the open market. As enforcement of this form of manipulation increases, the question arises—when, if ever, is a legitimate transaction manipulative?

A Theory Of Timing Effects In A Self-Organizing Model Of Sentence Processing, Garrett Smith
A Theory Of Timing Effects In A Self-Organizing Model Of Sentence Processing, Garrett Smith
Doctoral Dissertations
Many leading theories of human sentence processing assume that language compre- hension and production take place under the strict control of a symbolic grammar. For example, in sentence comprehension, reading or hearing a word triggers the application of a grammar rule that incorporates the word into the existing sentence structure so that the resulting structure is consistent with the all of the rules of the grammar. These theories have had wide success in explaining important timing effects, e.g., predicting speed-ups or slowdowns while reading a sentence. A number of phenomena have been identified, though, that challenge these grammar-controlled theories and …
Cross-Talk Between Different Dna Sensors In The Cytosol, Ishita Banerjee
Cross-Talk Between Different Dna Sensors In The Cytosol, Ishita Banerjee
Doctoral Dissertations
DNA released into the cytoplasm as a consequence of microbial infection or pathology can be recognized by the host sensor, Absent in melanoma (AIM) 2 that leads to the assembly and activation of the inflammasome complex and cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) that induces type-I Interferon (IFN) production. Inflammasome activated caspase-1 cleaves gasdermin-D leading to pore-formation in the plasma membrane that subsequently results in pyroptosis. In this study we found that activated gasdermin-D negatively regulates cGAS-induced type-I IFN production in a pyroptosis and interleukin (IL)-1b and IL-18 independent manner. Mechanistic studies showed that gasdermin-D pore formation lead to a loss of …
Genomic Imprinting And X Chromosome Dosage Compensation In Domestic Ruminants, Jingyue Duan
Genomic Imprinting And X Chromosome Dosage Compensation In Domestic Ruminants, Jingyue Duan
Doctoral Dissertations
In diploid cells, genes are presumed to be expressed from both alleles to maintain gene dosage for normal development. However, a small number of genes reach haplosufficiency even with only one functional allele per cell. Most of these genes are regulated through genomic imprinting and X chromosome inactivation (XCI). DNA methylation is an essential epigenetic regulation for developmental programming in embryogenesis and play crucial roles in genomic imprinting and XCI. This dissertation presents 1) effects of maternal diets on genome imprinting in fetal sheep (Chapter Two), 2) dosage compensation of the X chromosomes in bovine germline, embryos and somatic tissues …
Reproductive Differences Between Three Species Of Brachyrhaphis Livebearing Fishes In Panamá, Bruce Stallsmith
Reproductive Differences Between Three Species Of Brachyrhaphis Livebearing Fishes In Panamá, Bruce Stallsmith
Neotropical Biodiversity
Both theory and the published literature support the importance of demographic selection for differences in life history traits between populations as well as between related species. Much attention in this area has been paid to species in the livebearing fish family Poeciliidae. I studied populations of three species of poeciliid fishes of the genus Brachyrhaphis (episcopi, roswithae, terrabensis) found from low to high elevation in western and central Panamá for reproductive life history phenotypes. To determine how reproductive life history phenotypic characters subject to both selection and environmental influence may vary between these species, field collections were made at the …

Neotropical Biodiversity
In this study, we describe the diet of Leptodactylus podicipinus in South Pantanal. We analysed the stomach content of 30 individuals collected in September 2017 in the Miranda sub-region, Mato Grosso do Sul. We identified 19 prey categories to Order level, out of which Coleoptera was the most representative group and the most important prey category, followed by Orthoptera and Hemiptera. We recorded a post-metamorphic individual of Rhinella schneideri in the diet of L. podicipinus, the first record of batracophagy for this species. Our results provide evidence for the opportunistic and generalist feeding behaviour of L. podicipinus.

Diel Periodicity Of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Drift In A Coastal Stream In Northern Venezuela, M. Daniela Mendoza, José V. Montoya, Belkys Y. Perez
Neotropical Biodiversity
Aquatic macroinvertebrates and organic matter (OM) are transported downstream with the current, in a process that is modulated by different mechanisms in the ecosystem. Macroinvertebrate drift and OM transport are processes involving interactions between organisms and the environment at multiple spatial and temporal scales. The objective of this study was to describe benthic aquatic macroinvertebrate drift in one of the least disturbed streams of northern Venezuela during the dry season. Aquatic macroinvertebrate drift and OM transport were assessed on three different dates, sampling every three hours for each diel cycle using three drift nets. Aquatic macroinvertebrate drift exhibited a clear …

Sub-Functionalization Of Dorsal And Ventral Eyes In A Whirligig Beetle (Coleoptera: Gyrinidae), David Andrés Salamanca, Federico Brown
Neotropical Biodiversity
Compound eyes in nocturnal or fossorial insects generally express visible light opsins at higher levels than diurnal insects. In this study, we tested whether dorsal (above water) and ventral eyes (below water) of the diurnal four-eyed whirligig beetle Gyretes sericeus Laboulbène, 1853, resemble opsin expression and function of diurnal or nocturnal insect eyes respectively. By immunocytochemistry, we compared expression of green LW-opsin in dorsal and ventral rhabdoms of whirligig beetle ommatidia. Basal rhabdomeres (bR) showed comparable expression levels of LW-opsin in both dorsal and ventral ommatidia. In contrast, the inner proximal (R1p) and distal (R1d) bR showed a weak and …

Neotropical Biodiversity
The marine biodiversity program of CENAIM-ESPOL focuses on sessile invertebrates from the “‘El Pelado’ marine reserve”. The present study aims at understanding the different hierarchical levels of biodiversity found at the “El Pelado” and to guide biodiscovery initiatives. Generated biodiversity data were systematized in a database (Darwin Core standard) and integrated into a geographic information system that uses webGIS as a search engine. In this way, the information becomes available to the academy and entities involved in the management of coastal resources.

Neotropical Biodiversity
Extra chromosomes are found in all major taxa, and their characteristics, function, and evolution are not yet completely understood. Known as B chromosomes, they are additional and dispensable genetic material that are present in particular individuals of certain populations of some species. In this work, we present the occurrence of B chromosomes in the cichlid Crenicichla lepidota from southern Brazil. The analyzed population showed 2n = 48 chromosomes, plus 0, 2, 3, or 4 B chromosomes, being variable among metaphases (intraindividual variation). Morphologically, these B chromosomes were variable in size, similarly to the A chromosomes. B chromosomes did not show …
