Efficacy Of Translocation As A Management Tool For Urban Mule Deer In Utah, Channing R. Howard Dec 2018

Efficacy Of Translocation As A Management Tool For Urban Mule Deer In Utah, Channing R. Howard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An increase in urbanization in the United States has led to an increase in human-wildlife interactions with deer (Odocoileus spp.) which have been able to adapt and thrive in these urban environments. In Utah, urbanization has occurred along the Wasatch Front which was once traditional mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) winter range habitat. This urban expansion coupled with an increasing use of these urban areas by mule deer, have led to increasing conflicts with deer. Overabundant urban deer have led to increased concerns over safety from deer-vehicle collisions, and damage to personal property including gardens and landscaping. …

A Simple Metabolic Switch May Activate Apomixis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, David Alan Sherwood Dec 2018

A Simple Metabolic Switch May Activate Apomixis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, David Alan Sherwood

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Apomixis, asexual or clonal seed production in plants, can decrease the cost of producing hybrid seed and enable currently open pollinated crops to be converted to more vigorous and higher yielding hybrids that can reproduce themselves through their own seed. Sexual reproduction may be triggered by a programmed stress signaling event that occurs in both the meiocyte, just prior to meiosis, and later in the egg just prior to embryo sac maturation. The prevention of stress signaling and the activation of a pro-growth signal prior to meiosis triggered apomeiosis, the first half of apomixis. The same approach was used prior …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

LDL, VLDL and other members of the low-density lipoparticles (LLPs) enter cells through a large family of receptors. The actual receptor ligand(s) in apolipoprotein B100, one of the main proteins of LLP, remain(s) unknown. The objective of this study was to identify true receptor ligand(s) in apo B100, a molecule of 4,563 residues. Apo B100 contains 33 analogues of Cardin-Weintraub Arginine/Lysine-based receptor ligand motifs and shares key Lysine motifs and sequence similarity with the LDL receptor-associated protein, RAP, MESD, and heat shock proteins. Eleven FITC-labeled synthetic peptides of 21 – 42 residues, with at least one ligand, were tested for …

Determinants Of Social Behavior In Captive North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Olivia R. Beasley Dec 2018

Determinants Of Social Behavior In Captive North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Olivia R. Beasley

Graduate Theses

Field Studies of North American River Otters (Lontra canadensis), documented social behavior atypical among its mustelid relatives. In the wild, river otters are most active during crepuscular hours and males have been shown to be more social than females, as they cooperatively forage within bachelor groups (Blundell et al. 2002). Most social behavior occurs at latrine sites, where feces act as a means of communication between conspecifics (Blundell et al. 2005). While scientists have conducted some behavioral research on wild river otters, detailed studies of interactions are difficult for a species that ranges widely. A full understanding of river otter …

Chemical Treatment To Reduce Turbidity In Pumped Construction Site Water, James Jihoon Kang, Joshua W. Vetter, Richard A. Mclaughlin

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Many construction projects need to pump turbid water from borrow pits or other excavations into stilling basins or sediment filter bags prior to discharge. This study evaluated the effectiveness of these devices with polyacrylamide (PAM) injection to reduce effluent turbidity. Results from laboratory jar tests using two coastal plain sediments of North Carolina suggested that a cationic PAM was the most effective in reducing turbidity, followed by a nonionic PAM. Anionic PAM was effective in whole-soil jar tests but not when turbid supernatant was tested. A stilling basin was not effective in reducing the turbidity of the pumped water without …

On The Exactitude Of Big Data: La Bêtise And Artificial Intelligence, Noel Fitzpatrick, John D. Kelleher

Articles

This article revisits the question of ‘la bêtise’ or stupidity in the era of Artificial Intelligence driven by Big Data, it extends on the questions posed by Gille Deleuze and more recently by Bernard Stiegler. However, the framework for revisiting the question of la bêtise will be through the lens of contemporary computer science, in particular the development of data science as a mode of analysis, sometimes, misinterpreted as a mode of intelligence. In particular, this article will argue that with the advent of forms of hype (sometimes referred to as the hype cycle) in relation to big data and …

Ip Rights And Indigenous Rights: Between Commercialization And Humanization Of Traditional Knowledge, Julie Yassine Dec 2018

Ip Rights And Indigenous Rights: Between Commercialization And Humanization Of Traditional Knowledge, Julie Yassine

San Diego International Law Journal

The relevance of traditional knowledge is undeniable, but the only question that remains is how to protect it. Does IP law provide adequate and sufficient protection for traditional knowledge? Can it accommodate the particularities of indigenous groups without affecting their aspirations and inspirations? Applying IP law to traditional knowledge is highly contested by indigenous communities, as it can effectively lead to a community’s partial or total commercialization, which requires some efforts to “humanize” it for further adaptation to the context of indigenous rights.

Vr Safari Park: A Concept-Based World Building Interface Using Blocks And World Tree, Shotaro Ichikawa, Anthony Tang, Kazuki Takashima, Yoshifumi Kitamura

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a concept-based world building approach, realized in a system called VR Safari Park, which allows users to rapidly create and manipulate a world simulation. Conventional world building tools focus on the manipulation and arrangement of entities to set up the simulation, which is time consuming as it requires frequent view and entity manipulations. Our approach focuses on a far simpler mechanic, where users add virtual blocks which represent world entities (e.g. animals, terrain, weather, etc.) to a World Tree, which represents the simulation. In so doing, the World Tree provides a quick overview of the simulation, and users …

Environmental Fate And Microbial Effects Of Monensin, Lincomycin, And Sulfamethazine Residues In Soil, Matteo D'Alessio, Lisa M. Durso, Daniel N. Miller, Brian Woodbury, Chittaranjan Ray, Daniel D. Snow

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

The impact of commonly-used livestock antibiotics on soil nitrogen transformations under varying redox conditions is largely unknown. Soil column incubations were conducted using three livestock antibiotics (monensin, lincomycin and sulfamethazine) to better understand the fate of the antibiotics, their effect on nitrogen transformation, and their impact on soil microbial communities under aerobic, anoxic, and denitrifying conditions. While monensin was not recovered in the effluent, lincomycin and sulfamethazine concentrations decreased slightly during transport through the columns. Sorption, and to a limited extent degradation, are likely to be the primary processes leading to antibiotic attenuation during leaching. Antibiotics also affected microbial respiration …

Elucidating The Mechanism Of Cancer Drug Addiction In Alk+ Alcl, Soumya Sundara Rajan Nov 2018

Elucidating The Mechanism Of Cancer Drug Addiction In Alk+ Alcl, Soumya Sundara Rajan

Open Access Dissertations

The NPM1-ALK fusion kinase drives ALK-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALK+ ALCL). Mechanisms of NPM1-ALK-driven lymphomagenesis are well defined, but mediators of cancer drug addiction in cells overexpressing it are unknown. Cancer drug addiction arises paradoxically when tumors become dependent on exposure to inhibitors to which they formerly were sensitive. We and others demonstrated previously that addiction to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) occurs in resistant ALK+ ALCL over-expressing NPM1-ALK. It is unknown, however, if addiction mechanisms defined recently for solid tumors addicted to MEK/ERK inhibitors apply also to these kinase-driven lymphomas. We consistently found that MEK/ERK activation and other oncogenic …

Nephromyces Encodes A Urate Metabolism Pathway And Predicted Peroxisomes, Demonstrating These Are Not Ancient Losses Of Apicomplexans, Christopher Paight, Claudio H. Slamovits, Mary Beth Saffo, Christopher E. Lane

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The Phylum Apicomplexa is a quintessentially parasitic lineage, whose members infect a broad range of animals. One exception to this may be the apicomplexan genus Nephromyces, which has been described as having a mutualistic relationship with its host. Here we analyze transcriptome data from Nephromyces and its parasitic sister taxon, Cardiosporidium, revealing an ancestral purine degradation pathway thought to have been lost early in apicomplexan evolution. The predicted localization of many of the purine degradation enzymes to peroxisomes, and the in silico identification of a full set of peroxisome proteins, indicates that loss of both features in other …

The Effects Of Erw Contamination In Sri Lanka, Jennifer Dathan Nov 2018

The Effects Of Erw Contamination In Sri Lanka, Jennifer Dathan

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The Sri Lankan Civil War (July 1983–May 2009), between the government and the Tamil Tigers, was a conflict marked by the extensive use of explosive weapons. Predominantly affecting the majority-Tamil areas in the north and east (Tamil Eelam), the violence left deep scars upon the communities in these areas. The land is still heavily marked by the legacy of landmines, air-dropped bombs, and other explosive remnants of war (ERW).

The Added Value Of Integrating Uavs Into The Hma Toolkit, Shathel Fahs, Greg Crowther

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The rapid and ongoing development of lightweight, powerful, and relatively cheap unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAV)—still commonly referred to as drones—has demonstrated their use in increasingly diverse and imaginative ways across a large number of industries and sectors. They have also captured the public imagination with the prospect of revolutionizing many aspects of how we live and work. Humanitarian mine action (HMA) has not been immune to this process, and a number of organizations have conducted research, trials, and field tests into how they can support and improve the landmine and explosive remnants of war (ERW) survey and clearance process.

A Hidden History: Alexandria’S Slave Pen And The Domestic Slave Trade, Savannah Labbe

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Historical objects often have dark and horrible stories hidden just beneath their unassuming and innocent visage. The picture above is one such example of this type of object. At first glance the photo seems to depict a simple brick building; however, this building is anything but simple. It was used as a slave pen in the 19th century. Slave pens were buildings in which slaves were imprisoned and prepared for sale. The one pictured above was located in Alexandria, Virginia, the site of a major slave-trading center. While this photo’s association with the slave trade makes the photo a deeply …

Publications and Research

Noninvasive brain stimulation techniques are used in experimental and clinical fields for their potential effects on brain network dynamics and behavior. Transcranial electrical stimulation (TES), including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), has gained popularity because of its convenience and potential as a chronic therapy. However, a mechanistic understanding of TES has lagged behind its widespread adoption. Here, we review data and modelling on the immediate neurophysiological effects of TES in vitro as well as in vivo in both humans and other animals. While it remains unclear how typical TES protocols affect neural activity, we …
