Cigarette Litter Leachates: A Statistical Study Of Elements In Freshwater And Saltwater, Cintly Guzman Hernandez Dec 2018

Cigarette Litter Leachates: A Statistical Study Of Elements In Freshwater And Saltwater, Cintly Guzman Hernandez

Honors Theses

Cigarette butts are the most common item found in coastal litter cleanups as approximately 4.5 trillion smoked cigarette butts are discarded into the environment every year. Cigarette butts can leach toxic heavy metals and nicotine along with other compounds from tobacco combustion. Past research in our lab has analyzed elements leached from cigarette butts into freshwater. The cigarette butts consisted of smoked and unsmoked butts that were soaked varying periods of time, and at different pH levels to identify the relationship of these variables to the amount of metal leached. The elements analyzed were Al, Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, …

Karma After Democratic Kampuchea: Justice Outside The Khmer Rouge Tribunal, Caroline Bennett Dec 2018

Karma After Democratic Kampuchea: Justice Outside The Khmer Rouge Tribunal, Caroline Bennett

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

This article considers ways people in Cambodia narrate the Khmer Rouge regime and its genocide outside the bounds of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). Based on anthropological fieldwork, I explore how informants use ‘karma’ to discuss the genocide, and by doing so create their own understandings and lived experiences of that period of historical violence, understandings that do not fit neatly into the narrative modes created by the courts. By stepping outside the court, I consider ways of dealing with the genocide that exist beyond the international framework of transitional justice, thereby asking wider questions of …

Documentary Production As A Site Of Struggle: State, Capital, And Precarity In The Contemporary Chinese Documentary, Jiachun Hong

Dissertations

Documentary filmmakers have been considered artists, authors, or intellectuals, but rarely as labor. This study investigates how the nature of work as well as life is changing for those who work in the expanding area of TV documentary in China, in the midst of China’s shift towards a market-based economy. How do documentary makers reconcile their passion for documentary making with the increasingly precarious conditions of work? And, how do they cope with and resist the pressures of neoliberalism to survive in increasingly competitive local and global markets? Based on data gathered through the interviews with 40 practitioners from January …

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Hoarding disorder is characterized by difficulty parting with possessions and by clutter that impairs the functionality of living spaces. Cognitive behavioral therapy conducted by a therapist (individual or in a group) for hoarding symptoms has shown promise. For those who cannot afford or access the services of a therapist, one alternative is an evidence-based, highly structured, short-term, skills-based group using CBT principles but led by non-professional facilitators (the Buried in Treasures [BIT] Workshop). BIT has achieved improvement rates similar to those of psychologist-led CBT. Regardless of modality, however, clinically relevant symptoms remain after treatment, and new approaches to augment existing …

The Dietary Intake And Practices Of Adolescent Girls In Low- And Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review, Emily C. Keats, Aviva I. Rappaport, Shailja Shah, Christina Oh, Reena Jain, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) the double burden of malnutrition is high among adolescent girls, leading to poor health outcomes for the adolescent herself and sustained intergenerational effects. This underpins the importance of adequate dietary intake during this period of rapid biological development. The aim of this systematic review was to summarize the current dietary intake and practices among adolescent girls (10⁻19 years) in LMICs. We searched relevant databases and grey literature using MeSH terms and keywords. After applying specified inclusion and exclusion criteria, 227 articles were selected for data extraction, synthesis, and quality assessment. Of the included …

Development Of Highly Polar Structurally-Tuned Ionic Liquids With Unique Selectivity For Gas Chromatography, Mohsen Talebi Dec 2018

Development Of Highly Polar Structurally-Tuned Ionic Liquids With Unique Selectivity For Gas Chromatography, Mohsen Talebi

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Ionic Liquids (ILs) are state-of-the-art fluids that have found broad application in separation science. Owing to their unique physicochemical properties such as low vapor pressure, high thermal stability, and high viscosity, they were successfully used as stationary phase in gas chromatography (GC). By properly engineering their molecular structure, ionic liquids with tailor-made properties can be designed. Therefore, a systematic structure-function relationship can be established to study the effect of structural modification on the properties of ionic liquids. Herein, I describe the design and synthesis of several dicationic ionic liquids. The synthesized ILs were characterized in terms their physicochemical properties. The …

Analysis Of Long-Term Productivity Monitoring And Foraging Area Identification Of Breeding Common Terns In Coastal New Hampshire, Jessica Marie Carloni

Master's Theses and Capstones

To restore New Hampshire tern populations, the Isles of Shoals Seabird Restoration Project was initiated in 1997 by New Hampshire Audubon and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, and is currently administered through a partnership between Shoals Marine Laboratory and New Hampshire Fish Game Department. This initial program was effective and substantial numbers of common terns and lower numbers of roseate and arctic terns have returned to nest on White and Seavey Islands. Analysis of long-term productivity monitoring over 17 years indicates recent stability in the colony with approximately 2,800 nesting pairs with an average productivity rate of 1.11 …

The Impact Of Stereotype Threat On Object Location Memory, Samantha A. Boomgarden Dec 2018

The Impact Of Stereotype Threat On Object Location Memory, Samantha A. Boomgarden

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Gender differences have been identified in many tasks, and the male advantage in spatial skills has been well studied and is thought to be robust, especially on mental rotation and spatial perception tasks (e.g., Doyle & Voyer, 2016; Linn & Petersen, 2016; Pansu et al., 2016; Thompson & Voyer, 2014). However, women have been found to do better on tasks that require memorization of where objects are located in the environment (i.e., object location memory tasks; Voyer, Postma, Brake, & lmperato-McGinley, 2007). The purpose of this study was to examine how stereotype threat, elicited in women, would affect their performance …

Genetic Analysis Of The Role Of Grp170b (T14g8.3) During Toxin Induced Protein Folding Stress In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Nancy T. Nsengiyumva Dec 2018

Genetic Analysis Of The Role Of Grp170b (T14g8.3) During Toxin Induced Protein Folding Stress In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Nancy T. Nsengiyumva

Biology Theses

Chaperones maintain cellular homeostasis by facilitating protein folding. However, under standard cultured conditions, Caenorhabditis elegans strains genetically deficient for the ER chaperone GRP170B (encoded by the T14G8.3 locus) seems unaffected by the loss of this large chaperone. For most ER chaperones, the loss of GRP170B chaperone increases sensitivity to toxins that disrupt protein folding in the ER. I hypothesized that GRP170B’s role may involve mediating the nematodes response to ER protein folding stress. To investigate a stress role for GRP170B chaperone, I analyzed the effect of toxins that are known to effect ER protein folding on nematodes deficient for the …

Bactrocera dorsalis, the Oriental fruit fly, is one of the world's most destructive agricultural insect pests and a major impediment to international fresh commodity trade. The genetic structuring of the species across its entire geographic range has never been undertaken, because under a former taxonomy B. dorsalis was divided into four distinct taxonomic entities, each with their own, largely non-overlapping, distributions. Based on the extensive sampling of six a priori groups from 63 locations, genetic and geometric morphometric datasets were generated to detect macrogeographic population structure, and to determine prior and current invasion pathways of this species. Weak population structure …

Comparing The Therapeutic Efficacy Of Human Amniotic Membrane And Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Mitigation Of Osteoarthritis, Mackenzie Catherine Bowman Dec 2018

Comparing The Therapeutic Efficacy Of Human Amniotic Membrane And Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells In Mitigation Of Osteoarthritis, Mackenzie Catherine Bowman

All Theses

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability and pain to patients worldwide, and is characterized by abnormal subchondral bone remodeling, such as sclerosis and osteophyte formation, synovial tissue inflammation, and the destruction of articular cartilage, with limited capability for intrinsic repair. Currently, only palliative options are available to help treat the debilitating effects of the disease as there are no therapies authorized to halt or prevent the progression of OA. Due to the destructive nature of OA and a lack of current treatment options, there is an urgent need to develop novel therapies to mitigate the progression of OA. …

Evaluation Of Soybean Genotypes For Root Morphology, Hardpan Penetrability, Water Use Efficiency, And Yield, Harrison Gregory Fried Dec 2018

Evaluation Of Soybean Genotypes For Root Morphology, Hardpan Penetrability, Water Use Efficiency, And Yield, Harrison Gregory Fried

All Theses

Drought stress has been identified as the major environmental factor limiting soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) yield in the United States and other parts of the world. Water use efficiency (WUE) that results in greater yield per unit of rainfall is an important parameter in determining crop yields in rain-fed production systems, and is often related with crop drought tolerance. Even though roots are major plant organs that perceive and respond to drought stress, their utility in improving soybean yield and WUE under different environmental and management conditions are largely unclear. The objectives of this research were to evaluate …

Do Open Spaces Provide Refuge For Anurans Within An Urban Matrix?, David Ruple Hutto Dec 2018

Do Open Spaces Provide Refuge For Anurans Within An Urban Matrix?, David Ruple Hutto

All Theses

Urbanization is among the largest threats to amphibian populations through habitat fragmentation, isolation, and outright destruction. Urban open spaces, such as parks and golf courses, have the potential to provide amphibians with suitable habitat within an urbanized matrix. During the spring and summer of 2018, I conducted dip net surveys and active call surveys to determine the presence and abundance of anurans at 51 wetland sites within the Piedmont ecoregion of South Carolina. Nearly one-third of these wetlands were located within urban open spaces, while the others were situated along a rural – urban gradient. Impervious surface and road density …

Free Trade, Immigrant Workers, And Employment Discrimination, Angela D. Morrison Dec 2018

Free Trade, Immigrant Workers, And Employment Discrimination, Angela D. Morrison

Faculty Scholarship

This article reframes the outward-looking perspective on workers’ rights provisions in free trade agreements. It argues that those provisions provide an opportunity to reinforce the workplace rights of noncitizen workers in the United States. Scholars and worker advocates have criticized recent free trade agreements for their lack of enforcement mechanisms and protections for workers in developing countries. They argue that this has encouraged a race to the bottom on the part of multi-national corporations who relocate to developing countries to take advantage of cheap labor costs, thereby costing U.S. workers’ jobs.

This article shifts the focus. Instead, it argues that …

Histological Evaluation Of The Effects Of Diabetes On Renal Vasculature, David Pollard Dec 2018

Histological Evaluation Of The Effects Of Diabetes On Renal Vasculature, David Pollard

All Theses

Diabetes mellitus currently affects 8.3% of the world’s population, roughly 387 million people as of 2014, with numbers rising steadily. Diabetes is a major risk factor for vascular pathology, affecting the vascular wall at the cellular and extracellular level. The field of tissue engineering has proven to have great potential in treating cardiovascular disease and kidney failure. In order to develop tissue-engineered replacements resistant to the alterations induced by a diabetic environment, the modifications of the native tissues are important to be elucidated. Cardiovascular remodeling is due to elevated levels of fatty deposits along the vessel wall, hyperglycemia and chronic …

Deep Unsupervised Pixelization, Chu Han, Qiang Wen, Shengfeng He, Qianshu Zhu, Yinjie Tan, Guoqiang Han, Tien-Tsin Wong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we present a novel unsupervised learning method for pixelization. Due to the difficulty in creating pixel art, preparing the paired training data for supervised learning is impractical. Instead, we propose an unsupervised learning framework to circumvent such difficulty. We leverage the dual nature of the pixelization and depixelization, and model these two tasks in the same network in a bi-directional manner with the input itself as training supervision. These two tasks are modeled as a cascaded network which consists of three stages for different purposes. GridNet transfers the input image into multi-scale grid-structured images with different aliasing …

Blended With The Savior: Gregory Of Nyssa's Eucharistic Pharmacology In The Catechetical Oration, John David Penniman Dec 2018

Blended With The Savior: Gregory Of Nyssa's Eucharistic Pharmacology In The Catechetical Oration, John David Penniman

Faculty Journal Articles

Humankind, for Gregory of Nyssa, was poisoned through a primordial act of eating the forbidden fruit from the Garden of Eden. As a result, the toxin of sin and death has been blended into the body and soul of each person, dispersing itself throughout the component parts of their nature. If eating and drinking initiated the spiritual and physical degradation of humanity, Gregory argues, then it must also be through eating and drinking—namely, through the Eucharist—that humanity will be healed. This article proposes that Gregory's instruction on the Eucharist in his Catechetical Oration should be understood as more than merely …

Analysis Of Michigan Juvenile Detention Facilities, Loredana M. Cunningham

Honors Projects

The world of juvenile justice is a relatively new concept in today’s society dating back to the nineteenth century in comparison to the ancient structure of the criminal justice system. It is no wonder that the development of juvenile detention centers has been a slow process considering the late start to having modern research for this contemporary structure of a justice system for youth. While there are licensing standards for each juvenile detention facility to meet in order to continue having the beds to be occupied, there are unique ways that each facility can achieve that. The research focused on …

A Critical Analysis Of Bumblefoot: Care And Preventative Measures In Captive Penguins, Jamie A. Wolanin Dec 2018

A Critical Analysis Of Bumblefoot: Care And Preventative Measures In Captive Penguins, Jamie A. Wolanin

Honors Projects

Bumblefoot is a progressive and sometimes deadly infection that afflicts penguins living in human care. The most prominent cause of the disease is the extended amount of time that captive penguins spend standing in comparison to their pelagic and wild counterparts. For years, facilities have treated bumblefoot with surgery and antibiotics. However, this approach is palliative rather than preventative and has become problematic as bacteria develop stronger resistance to antibiotics. To address the behavioral abnormalities underlying the onset of bumblefoot, zoos and aquariums should utilize environmental enrichment. Many forms of environmental enrichment, including the relationship penguins have with their keepers …

Non-Contact Evaluation Methods For Infrastructure Condition Assessment, Sattar Dorafshan Dec 2018

Non-Contact Evaluation Methods For Infrastructure Condition Assessment, Sattar Dorafshan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The United States infrastructure, e.g. roads and bridges, are in a critical condition. Inspection, monitoring, and maintenance of these infrastructure in the traditional manner can be expensive, dangerous, time-consuming, and tied to human judgment (the inspector). Non-contact methods can help overcoming these challenges. In this dissertation two aspects of non-contact methods are explored: inspections using unmanned aerial systems (UASs), and conditions assessment using image processing and machine learning techniques. This presents a set of investigations to determine a guideline for remote autonomous bridge inspections.

Tying The Knot: An Interdisciplinary Approach To Understanding The Human Right To Adequate Nutrition, Jessica Fanzo, Kaitlin Y. Cordes, Elizabeth F. Fox, Anna Bulman

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment Staff Publications

Malnutrition is alarmingly prevalent, affecting one in three people worldwide. In this Article, we argue that a key reason the global community has been unsuccessful in combating malnutrition is a lack of clarity outside the field of nutrition regarding the true meaning of “nutrition.” In particular, this has limited the effectiveness of international human rights law as a mechanism for addressing malnutrition.

In this interdisciplinary Article, which draws from both the legal and nutrition fields, we unpack the meaning of nutrition and demonstrate that a standalone right to adequate nutrition does indeed exist in international human rights law as a …
