Preharvest contamination of produce with food borne pathogens has been a major food safety issue. In this study, we investigated the effect of surrounding vegetation on the survival of natural and inoculated generic Escherichia coli on watermelon rinds in an agricultural field setting. There was no significant difference (p >.05) on the populations of natural generic E. coli (1–1.46 log Most Probable Number (MPN)/sample) and coliforms (<3.99 log CFU/cm2) on watermelons harvested from low, medium, and high levels of vegetation. However, the survival rate of generic E. coli inoculated on watermelon rind discs was variable with the level of vegetation. A significant reduction in generic E. coli count was observed within 12 hr at all vegetation levels. After 108 hr, discs placed at low vegetation level had a highest die-off reduction (3 log Colony Forming Units (CFU)/cm2) compared to medium and high vegetation levels. Practical applications: To ensure preharvest produce safety, the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) produce safety rule has suggested a time interval between last irrigation and harvest for potentially contaminating microorganisms to die-off. However, a knowledge gap exists regarding the influence of surrounding vegetation on microbial die-off rates on produce in the agricultural field. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of considering the surrounding vegetation while making decisions for developing preharvest risk management strategies based on microbial die-off rate calculations.

Development of highly efficient, low cost adsorbents for heavy metal ion removal from wastewater is an enduring undertaking. Two major groups of nanocomposite adsorbents are reviewed here. The magnetic carbon family is first discussed including the preparation of such materials. Various carbon sources have been used in the preparation, and the structural characteristics have been analyzed. Cr(VI) removal studies unveil a wide range of performance. The second group adsorbents is polymer functionalized nanocomposites. One notable polymer is polyaniline which is a redox polymer. The redox nature allows the composite materials to facilitate Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III) which is prone to …

Accounting For Intraspecific Variation Transforms Our Understanding Of Artiodactyl Social Evolution, Monica Miles
Accounting For Intraspecific Variation Transforms Our Understanding Of Artiodactyl Social Evolution, Monica Miles
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A major goal in the study of mammalian social systems has been to explain evolutionary transitions in social traits. Recent comparative analyses have used phylogenetic reconstructions to determine the evolution of social traits but have omitted intraspecific variation in social organization (IVSO) and mating systems (IVMS). My objectives were to (i) summarize the extent of IVSO and IVMS in Artiodactyla and Perissodactyla and (ii) determine the ancestral social organization and mating system for Artiodactyla. Eighty-two percent of artiodactyls showed IVSO, whereas 31% exhibited IVMS. Eighty percent of perissodactyls had variable social organization and only one species showed IVMS. The ancestral …

Although the effects of nano-sized titania (nTiO2) on hatching events (change in hatching time and total hatching) in zebrafish have been reported, additional consequences of nTiO2 exposure (i.e., the effects of nTiO2-induced changes in hatching events and morphometric parameters on embryo-larvae development and survivability) have not been reported. To address this knowledge gap, embryos 4 h postfertilization were exposed to nTiO2 (0, 0.01, 10, and 1000 μg/mL) for 220 h. Hatching rate (58, 82, and 106 h postexposure [hpe]), survival rate (8 times from 34 to 202 hpe), and 21 morphometric characteristics (8 times …

Mice with disruption of Lrrk1 and patients with nonfunctional mutant Lrrk1 exhibit severe osteopetrosis phenotypes because of osteoclast cytoskeletal dysfunction. To understand how Lrrk1 regulates osteoclast function by modulating cytoskeleton rearrangement, we examined the proteins that are differentially phosphorylated in wild-type mice and Lrrk1-deficient osteoclasts by metal affinity purification coupled liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) analyses. One of the candidates that we identified by LC/MS is L-plastin, an actin bundling protein. We found that phosphorylation of L-plastin at serine (Ser) residues 5 was present in wild-type osteoclasts but not in Lrrk1-deficient cells. Western blot analyses with antibodies specific for Ser5 phosphorylated …

Accuracy Of Computed Tomography In Differentiating Perforated From Nonperforated Appendicitis, Taking Histopathology As The Gold Standard., Mohammad Ali, Jawaid Iqbal, Raza Sayani
Department of Radiology
Introduction Acute appendicitis is one of the more common causes of acute abdominal pain. It occurs when the lumen of the appendix is obstructed, leading to inflammation and finally perforation. The preoperative differentiation of perforated from nonperforated appendicitis is important and helpful to define prognosis and determine an adequate therapeutic approach, including consideration for nonsurgical treatment. This study recommends computed tomography (CT), a noninvasive method of investigation, be used frequently in clinically suspected cases of perforated appendicitis in the Pakistani population for better patient outcomes. Objective To determine the diagnostic accuracy of CT in differentiating perforated from nonperforated appendicitis by …

A Critical Review Of U.S. Securities Laws And The Status Of Initial Coin Offerings: Potential Solutions For Issuers, Muhammed Kus
Maurer Theses and Dissertations
Securities law in the United States has a unique approach to defining what is a security and what is not a security. It includes broadly defined terminology and describes several investment instruments that may be considered a security. Courts use one of two methods to determine whether an investment contract is a security: the Howey Test and the Risk Capital Test.
Initial Coin Offerings are one of the most recent instruments that courts and other governmental organizations need to examine in order to answer whether they meet the criteria of being a security. Depending on the result, the issuers may …

Vasco Da Gama’S Voyages To India: Messianism, Mercantilism, And Sacred Exploits, S. M. Ghazanfar
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
The Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama (1460-1524), was the first European to sail from Portugal to India. Accolades for this achievement have long obscured the messianic motivation for the 1498 voyage, “to invade, capture, vanquish, and subdue all Saracens (Muslims) and pagans and other enemies of Christ; to reduce them to perpetual slavery; to convert them to Christianity; [and] to acquire great wealth by force of arms from the Infidels,” as sanctified by various Papal Bulls, together called “the Doctrine of Discovery” (Dum Diversas, 1452; Romanus Pontifex, 1455; Inter Caetera, 1493). The other key motive in …
Reference Tracking In Ethiopian Sign Language, Katelin Jo French
Reference Tracking In Ethiopian Sign Language, Katelin Jo French
Theses and Dissertations
Very little has been written about Ethiopian Sign Language, but the language has obvious differences from more well-studied signed languages. This thesis focuses on striking differences in reference tracking: looking at all the different referring types—lexical items, points, eye gaze, body shift, agreement, and zero reference—and their distribution throughout narrative texts. Through this process, Ethiopian Sign Language has proved different from expectations based on previously studied signed languages. This language uses loci with much more flexibility, depending on role shift alone to strongly establish loci for entities. Another way this language differs from other languages is its lack of entity …
The Bureau Of Land Management's Infirm Compensatory Mitigation Policy, Justin Pidot
The Bureau Of Land Management's Infirm Compensatory Mitigation Policy, Justin Pidot
Fordham Environmental Law Review
Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke has described “compensatory mitigation” as “un-American” and “extortion.” In keeping with that view, on July 26, 2018, the Bureau of Land Management (“BLM”) adopted a radical new policy that disclaims statutory authority to impose compensatory mitigation measures.
Notwithstanding the aspersions the Secretary has cast, compensatory mitigation is a common-sense policy instrument that has been a mainstay of environmental and public lands policy for decades. It is a tool through which an agency authorizing private activities—drilling oil wells, filling wetlands—conditions its approval upon the implementation of measures to offset attendant environmental harms. Compensatory mitigation thereby …

Geographic Discrimination: Of Place, Space, Hillbillies, And Home, William Rhee, Stephen C. Scott
West Virginia Law Review
This Essay explores the two-sided challenge of geographic discrimination, where U.S. citizens receive disparate treatment from other citizens or the government solely because of where they live or self-identify as home, through the interdisciplinary concepts of space, place, and distance; and an original examination of discrimination against Appalachians. Such disparate treatment is unavoidable and even arguably politically correct. Where we call home matters in a number of legitimate ways to include our access to jobs and services, culture, educational opportunities, and other basic human capabilities. Although technology has increased individual mobility more than ever before, a majority of Americans nevertheless …

The False Hope Of Deliberate Forgetting: A Critical Response To Proponents Of Limited-Use Memory Manipulation, Peter A. Depergola Ii
Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
The emergence of manipulation techniques that dampen, disassociate, erase, and replace unsavory episodic memories have given pause to even the most ardent proponents of the practice. Supporters of memory manipulation have since clarified that the interventions should be made available exclusively in extreme and limited-use cases. In light of the narrowing of this approach, the present essay examines the arguments in favor of limited-use memory manipulation (LUMM) for the two most commonly-cited circumstances in which the practice is claimed to be justified: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance addiction. After examining the neuroscience of PTSD and substance addition, the critical …

Sundays With Roque: A Tale Of Friendship And Companionship, Tomas G. Rosario
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
“Sundays with Roque” is partly narrative, mainly reflective essay patterned after the best-selling memoir Tuesdays with Morrie. Like Tuesdays with Morrie, which tells the inspiring story of the relationship between writer Mitch Albom and his professor Morrie Schwartz, this narrative-reflective essay is about the equally inspirational bond between Leovino Garcia and his former professor Fr. Roque Ferriols, S.J. Their relation is a tale of friendship and companionship that manifest extraordinary commitment, fidelity, and sacrifices from both parties in their mutual care and dynamic love for one another. What is most noteworthy, however, in “Sundays with Roque,” is that it serves …
A Systematic Review Comparison Of Ketogenic Dietary Treatment Efficacy For Alzheimer’S Disease, Joshua Chavez
A Systematic Review Comparison Of Ketogenic Dietary Treatment Efficacy For Alzheimer’S Disease, Joshua Chavez
Undergraduate Honors Theses
There is evidence suggesting that Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology can be improved through the use of mechanistic/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition therapy. Regulation of mTOR is responsible for mediating cell growth by regulating cell processes such as autophagy, transcription, and translation. Evidence suggests that a ketogenic dietary (KD) treatment may result in decreased mTOR signaling, thus making KD a potential treatment for AD. The objective of this systematic review was to explore the efficacy of current AD medications and compare the results to preliminary KD treatment for AD. The biochemical relevance of mTOR inhibition for AD and the relevance …

Wet Markets And Avian Influenza: Public Policy Decisions In Hong Kong, Shawn Smallman
International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
After the emergence of H5N1 avian influenza in 1997 Hong Kong implemented a sophisticated system to regulate live poultry markets. While this system is well implemented and thorough, it also has limitations. The rise of H7N9 avian influenza (which is typically acquired through contact with poultry, including in live markets) makes this an appropriate time to revisit the ethical and practical issues related to this trade. Based on data from field observations of live markets in Hong Kong, and interviews with experts in the field, this paper recommends that the government of Hong Kong create a committee to examine the …
Regional Specialization Of The Adult Meninges Supports Different Brain Areas And Alters With Age, Christina Ann Calabrese
Regional Specialization Of The Adult Meninges Supports Different Brain Areas And Alters With Age, Christina Ann Calabrese
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
The meninges comprise three heterogeneous connective tissue coverings, referred to as the dura, arachnoid, and pia mater, which completely envelop the brain and spinal cord. Given the meninges’ vast coverage over the entire CNS and its unique development, I hypothesized that regional leptomeninges (arachnoid and pia mater layers combined) provide specialized support to different brain areas. During development, anterior meninges, overlying the frontal cortex, derive from neural crest cells that are ectodermal in origin. Posterior meninges, overlying the midbrain to the spinal cord, derive from a mesodermal lineage. This difference in lineage and location suggests potential functional differences between the …

Reversing The Reliance Revolution In Contract, Eric Alden
Reversing The Reliance Revolution In Contract, Eric Alden
Washington Law Review
During the past century, leading American academics have attempted to rewrite in radically altered form the theoretical foundation of liability in contract. In derogation of the historical bases for contractual liability in Anglo-American law, namely voluntary mutual exchange and “formal” contract, these intellectual revolutionaries desire to impose strict liability in contract on the basis of unilateral, unbargained-for reliance. The centerpiece of this revisionist effort has been the novel and artificial doctrine of “promissory estoppel,” first advanced by Williston and Corbin in the Restatement of the Law of Contracts published in 1932. The invention of this doctrine has been accompanied by …

Characterizing Ecological And Genetic Patterns Of The Colonizing Species Dubautia Scabra On The Big Island, Hawaii, Samantha Kaleigh Naibauer
Master's Theses
The Hawaiian Silversword Alliance (HSA) is a group of approximately 35 endemic species found on the Hawaiian Islands. The HSA is of particular interest due to the vast adaptive responses of its members across the Hawaiian Islands. Each of these plant species is generally limited to a very specific habitat type with a unique morphology and physiology. Dubautia scabra is the first angiosperm colonist of new lava flows, arriving in as few as two years after lava cools. The critical role D. scabra plays in this ecosystem gives a unique starting point for understanding downstream ecological processes such as seed …
An Investigation Of Enzymes Capable Of Activating Cannabinoid Prodrugs, Brittney J. Morgan
An Investigation Of Enzymes Capable Of Activating Cannabinoid Prodrugs, Brittney J. Morgan
Master's Theses
The plant Cannabis sativa contains a class of terpenophenols called cannabinoids which, in their active form, have been shown to have antiproliferative, anti-metastatic, anti-angiogenic, and pro-apoptotic effects on several types of cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. Cannabinoids have been shown to not exert this apoptotic activity in healthy cells and they do not elicit the usual side effects seen with conventional chemotherapies. However, naturally occurring prodrugs from Cannabis must first be converted into the active form to induce the apoptotic and other physiological activities. Although humans do not possess the enzyme(s) necessary for this conversion, several different …
Teaching Musical Theatre Skills In The Performance-Based Classroom: James And The Giant Peach, Kelsey Alys Meiklejohn
Teaching Musical Theatre Skills In The Performance-Based Classroom: James And The Giant Peach, Kelsey Alys Meiklejohn
Master's Theses
The popularity of musical theatre in America is driving more students to seek out performance opportunities while theatre classrooms are facing dwindling attendance rates. The goal of this thesis is to determine whether it is possible to employ the mounting of a full-scale musical production of James and the Giant Peach in a classroom setting to motivate student growth in acting, singing, and dance due to the product-oriented environment. The complex material in the script and score of James and the Giant Peach was adequately challenging to necessitate and promote significant student growth as musical theatre performers. Through working on …

Betel Mania, From Culture To Cancer: Digestive And Discursive Uses Of The Betel Nut (Areca Catechu) In Guam, Anne Perez Hattori
Pacific Studies
Chewed in the Marianas for centuries, pugua, known scientifically as Areca catechu and colloquially as betel nut, is the world’s fourth most commonly used psychoactive substance after tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine-containing beverages. It has and continues to serve numerous cultural, social, political, medicinal, and economic purposes. At the same time, health concerns are mounting against pugua due to its classification as a carcinogen by the World Health Organization, as well as to high rates of cancer among Chamorros and to federal research funds that promote an antichewing agenda. This paper uses a range of sources to examine the historical use …
