Relationships Between Microbial Indicators And Pathogens In Recreational Water Settings, Asja Korajkic, Brian R. Mcminn, Valerie J. Harwood
Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications
Fecal pollution of recreational waters can cause scenic blight and pose a threat to public health, resulting in beach advisories and closures. Fecal indicator bacteria (total and fecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, and enterococci), and alternative indicators of fecal pollution (Clostridium perfringens and bacteriophages) are routinely used in the assessment of sanitary quality of recreational waters. However, fecal indicator bacteria (FIB), and alternative indicators are found in the gastrointestinal tract of humans, and many other animals and therefore are considered general indicators of fecal pollution. As such, there is room for improvement in terms of their use for informing risk assessment …

Shame, Embarrassment, And The Subjectivity Requirement, Erick Ramirez
Shame, Embarrassment, And The Subjectivity Requirement, Erick Ramirez
Philosophy
Reactive theories of responsibility see moral accountability as grounded on the capacity for feeling reactive-attitudes. I respond to a recent argument gaining ground in this tradition that excludes psychopaths from accountability. The argument relies on what Paul Russell has called the 'subjectivity requirement'. On this view, the capacity to feel and direct reactive-attitudes at oneself is a necessary condition for responsibility. I argue that even if moral attitudes like guilt are impossible for psychopaths to deploy, that psychopaths, especially the "successful" and "secondary" subtypes of psychopathy, can satisfy the subjectivity requirement with regard to shame. I appeal to evidence that …

An Investigation Of Primary Children’S Misconceptions On Floating And Sinking Concepts: A Survey In One Government Primary School In Soroti Municipality, Eastern Uganda, Cathy Martha Akello
An Investigation Of Primary Children’S Misconceptions On Floating And Sinking Concepts: A Survey In One Government Primary School In Soroti Municipality, Eastern Uganda, Cathy Martha Akello
Master of Education
Floating and sinking concepts are part of the science curriculum in Uganda, an important topic applicable in everyday life. Globally teaching and learning of floating and sinking concepts pose a challenge to both teachers and learners in the primary schools. This has led to a number of common misconceptions resulting to persistent errors in learners’ performance. These misconceptions tend to be difficult to remediate if not handled in children’s early years of education. A sample of one hundred learners of grade 5 aged 10-15 years participated in the study. Questionnaires were used to elicit learner’s misconceptions about the floating and …
2018 Lambing Survey, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
2018 Lambing Survey, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Animal production and livestock published reports
The 2018 season brought challenging times for sheep producers in WA and there were wide reports of low lambing rates.
Many areas had a very late start coupled with low winter growth, but saw a wet warm spring bring high pasture growth rates (PGR). Other areas, particularly the South Coast and central south region recorded decile 1 rainfall and grew minimal pasture throughout the season (Appendix 4). All of this was on the back of a poor spring in 2017.
To better understand the impacts of poor and variable seasons on lambing and turnoff rates and to map the impact …

Sex Determination By Morphological Measurements Of Young Rockhopper Penguins (Eudyptes Chrysocome) During The Crèche Phase, Virginia Morandini, Miguel Ferrer, Lynelle Perry, Marc Bechard
Raptor Research Center Publications and Presentations
To provide an easy and reliable work tool to identify the sex of Rockhopper Penguin (Eudyptes chrysocome) chicks, we weighed and measured 95 nestlings in the crèche phase during 24-31 January 2017 on the Falkland Islands, Argentina. Sex was subsequently determined using DNA analyses of blood from the same individuals. Significant differences were found in bill length (exposed culmen), bill depth and width, flipper length, and diagonal tarsus, but stepwise discriminant analysis showed bill length to be the best predictor for sex determination. Our model correctly classified 82.7% of males and 90.2% of females (overall correct classification 86.2%). …

Investigating The Role That Multimodal Pedagogy Can Play In Improving The Teaching And Learning Of English Language In A Resource Constrained Rural Kenyan Public Secondary School: Action Research., Veronica Atieno Okoth
Master of Education
Resource constrained rural public schools in Kenya still make use of discourses and pedagogies that are traditional and teacher centered, and not factoring in learner participation in the learning process. This leads to students’ minimal performance. These classroom practices become a hindrance for the learners to develop their higher order thinking abilities. Language and literacy teaching and learning requires pedagogical variety for learners to make meaning. Using observation, interview, focus group discussion and reflection notes, this Participatory Action Research, through intervention sought to understand the role that multimodal pedagogy can play in improving the teaching of English in a form …

Positive Interactions In Freshwater Systems, Samuel Clarence Silknetter
Positive Interactions In Freshwater Systems, Samuel Clarence Silknetter
All Theses
The goals of this thesis are twofold, 1) to review the existing literature on positive interactions, and 2) to experimentally test the role of biotic context in a freshwater reproductive interaction. First, my co-authors and I have conducted a review of positive interactions in freshwaters to establish a direction for future research. By outlining case studies and causal mechanisms, we illustrate the diversity of positive interactions, and set the stage for a comprehensive look at the role of context in shaping interaction outcomes. Our research directive focuses on the value of both basic life history and experimental research, then using …
To Withdraw Or Not To Withdraw: Reviewability Of An Agency's Withdrawn Proposed Rule, Jane E. Carmody
To Withdraw Or Not To Withdraw: Reviewability Of An Agency's Withdrawn Proposed Rule, Jane E. Carmody
Washington Law Review
Federal agencies propose thousands of regulations in any given year. The Administrative Procedure Act requires such agencies to follow certain procedures when enacting rules and regulations. However, when an agency proposes a new rule that is purely discretionary—not mandated by Congress—it may withdraw the proposed rule at any point before the rule is finalized. In October 2017, the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) withdrew a proposed rule that, if enacted, would have required long-term care facilities to recognize out of state same-sex marriages as a condition of Medicare and Medicaid participation. In its formal withdrawal published in the Federal …
A Meticulous Food Safety Plan Today Avoids Handcuffs Tomorrow, Kim Bousquet
A Meticulous Food Safety Plan Today Avoids Handcuffs Tomorrow, Kim Bousquet
Journal of Food Law & Policy
In August 2010, thousands of people across the United States were poisoned by eating eggs unknowingly tainted with Salmonella enteritidis bacteria. Following a lengthy investigation, the owners of the facility where the outbreak began were sentenced to three months in prison. This is not a one-off case; poor food safety practices are responsible for several outbreaks and often end in incarceration. Filthy hen houses, diseased fruit storage, and negligent food processing may be the last thing we want to imagine, but these practices have much to teach today's food producers. This article first examines how poor food production practices can …

Tissue Engineering Platforms For Cardiac Pathology In Diabetes: In Vitro And In Vivo Studies, Laura Elizabeth Mccallum
All Dissertations
425 million people have diabetes worldwide, and by 2045 this number is estimated to increase to 629 million. The risk for cardiovascular diseases such as cardiomyopathy, hypertension, and atherosclerosis increase 5 and 2-fold for diabetic women and men respectively. Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCMP) is a ventricular dysfunction that occurs in patients with diabetes independent of coronary artery disease, hypertension or valvular abnormalities. Hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia cause metabolic disturbances that adversely affect myocardial cells and extracellular matrix. These modifications alter overall myocardial structure and cardiac function, which can lead to heart failure.
As of now there is no specific marker for this …

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
This study analyzes the costs and benefits of the Kentucky For-Hire operating authority, which is issued to all carriers who pick up and drop off freight in Kentucky on a for-hire basis. It reviews current statutory and regulatory requirements, calculates the costs and benefits of administering Kentucky For-Hire, reviews the legal history of trucking regulation and deregulation, reports on a survey of other states about their practices with intrastate operating authority, and proposes three alternatives to current policies. The primary benefit of Kentucky For-Hire is that it enables the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet to verify carriers have commercial liability insurance. Several …
Virulence Regulation In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Via The Alginate Regulators, Algu And Algr, The Posttranscriptional Regulator, Rsma, And The Two-Component System, Algz/R, Sean Stacey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacillus able to colonize a wide variety of environments. In the human host, P. aeruginosa can establish an acute infection or persist and create a chronic infection. P. aeruginosa is able to establish a niche and persist in human hosts by using a wide array of virulence factors used for: movement, killing host cells, and evading immune cells and antibiotics. Understanding virulence factors and their regulation has proved to be an important means of combating the morbidity and mortality of P. aeruginosa as well as the ever-increasing threat of drug resistance. By targeting virulence factors …

Natural Selection In Bats With Historical Exposure To White-Nose Syndrome, Markéta Harazim, Ivan Horáček, Lucie Jakešová
KIP Articles
Hibernation allows animals to survive periods of resource scarcity by reducing their energy expenditure through decreased metabolism. However, hibernators become susceptible to psychrophilic pathogens if they cannot mount an efficient immune response to infection. While Nearctic bats infected with white-nose syndrome (WNS) suffer high mortality, related Palearctic taxa are better able to survive the disease than their Nearctic counterparts. We hypothesised that WNS exerted historical selective pressure in Palearctic bats, resulting in genomic changes that promote infection tolerance. We investigated partial sequences of 23 genes related to water metabolism and skin structure function in nine Palearctic and Nearctic hibernating bat species …

Immortal Melancholia: A Psychoanalytical Study Of Byronic Heroes, Kathryn Frazell
Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects
This culminating project examines Byronic heroes using psychoanalytic theory across four case studies in media, including classic literature, theater, film, and television. The Byronic hero is a literary archetype inspired by the poet George Gordon, Lord Byron (1788-1824). Typical characteristics include angst, arrogance, cunning intelligence, criminality, desire, passion, dominance, and otherness. The characters I have chosen to study include Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre (1847), the Phantom from the 2004 film The Phantom of the Opera, James Bond from the 2012 film Skyfall, and Damon Salvatore from the hit television series The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017). Through examining the …

Some respondents noticed that the first and second generation of immigrants are different in terms of diligence, leisure time and approach to money. For some of the …
Utility And Accuracy Of Primary And Secondary Ultrasonographic Signs For Diagnosing Acute Appendicitis In Pediatric Patients, W. Akhtar, Mujtaba Z. Naveed, Kumail Khandwala
Utility And Accuracy Of Primary And Secondary Ultrasonographic Signs For Diagnosing Acute Appendicitis In Pediatric Patients, W. Akhtar, Mujtaba Z. Naveed, Kumail Khandwala
Department of Radiology
Introduction Making an accurate diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) is vital to prevent the morbid complications associated with untreated AA. This is challenging in up to 30% of pediatric patients which is a significantly high number. Ultrasound (US) has been generally used as the initial mode of imaging in pediatric patients due to the lack of ionizing radiation. Given its variable accuracy, adjuvants such as secondary signs can be used to aid the radiologist in making an accurate diagnosis. Materials and methods Patients between the ages of two and sixteen years with acute abdominal pain suspicious for AA, who underwent …
Engineering Yeast To Evaluate Human Proteins Involved In Selective Rna Packaging During Hiv Particle Production, Ryan M. Bitter
Engineering Yeast To Evaluate Human Proteins Involved In Selective Rna Packaging During Hiv Particle Production, Ryan M. Bitter
Master's Theses
Despite recent advances in antiretroviral therapy, nearly 37 million people continue to live with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Basic and applied research on the assembly of HIV could be enhanced by using a genetically tractable organism, such as yeast, rather than mammalian cells. While previous studies showed that expression of the HIV Gag polyprotein in Saccharomyces cerevisiae spheroplasts resulted in the production of virus-like particles (VLPs), many questions regarding the utility of yeast in HIV assembly remain uninvestigated. Here, we report use of S. cerevisiae for both the production of VLPs with selectively packaged RNA and to evaluate the human …

Assessing Risk In Iot Devices, David Levitsky
Assessing Risk In Iot Devices, David Levitsky
Master's Theses
The explosive growth of the Internet of Things ecosystem has thrust these devices into the center of our lives. Unfortunately, the desire to create these devices has been stronger than the one to secure them. Recent attacks have shown us ignoring security in Internet of Things devices can cause severe harm in both a digital and physical sense. This thesis outlines a framework for developers and managers to assess the risk of IoT devices using a weighted scoring system across five different categories. Our case studies suggest that devices with higher security considerations have a better security posture and lower …
Investigating The Effect Of An Upstream Spheroid On Tandem Hydrofoils, Joel Tynan Guerra
Investigating The Effect Of An Upstream Spheroid On Tandem Hydrofoils, Joel Tynan Guerra
Master's Theses
This thesis documents a series of three dimensional unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes CFD simulations used to investigate the influence of an upstream prolate spheroid body on tandem pitching hydrofoils. The model is validated by performing separate CFD simulations on the body and pitching hydrofoils and comparing results to existing experimental data. The simulations were run for a range of Strouhal numbers (0.2-0.5) and phase differences (0-π). Results were compared to identical simulations without an upstream body to determine how the body affects thrust generation and the unsteady flow field.
The combined time-averaged thrust increases with Strouhal number, and is highest …
