During the late Pleistocene of North America (≈36,000 to 10,000 years ago), saber-toothed cats, American lions, dire wolves, and coyotes competed for prey resources at Rancho La Brea (RLB). Despite the fact that the giant short-faced bear (Arctodus simus) was the largest land carnivoran present in the fauna, there is no evidence that it competed with these other carnivores for prey at the site. Here, for the first time, we report carious lesions preserved in specimens of A. simus, recovered from RLB. Our results suggest that the population of A. simus from RLB was more omnivorous than the highly carnivorous …

Ion Trajectory Simulations And Design Optimization Of Toroidal Ion Trap Mass Spectrometers, Jessica Marie Higgs Dec 2017

Ion Trajectory Simulations And Design Optimization Of Toroidal Ion Trap Mass Spectrometers, Jessica Marie Higgs

Theses and Dissertations

Ion traps can easily be miniaturized to become portable mass spectrometers. Trapped ions can be ejected by adjusting voltage settings of the radiofrequency (RF) signal applied to the electrodes. Several ion trap designs include the quadrupole ion trap (QIT), cylindrical ion trap (CIT), linear ion trap (LIT), rectilinear ion trap (RIT), toroidal ion trap, and cylindrical toroidal ion trap. Although toroidal ion traps are being used more widely in miniaturized mass spectrometers, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of how the toroidal electric field affects ion motion, and therefore, the ion trap's performance as a mass analyzer. Simulation programs …

Idioms Or Open Choice? A Corpus Based Analysis, Kaitlyn Alayne Vanwagoner Dec 2017

Idioms Or Open Choice? A Corpus Based Analysis, Kaitlyn Alayne Vanwagoner

Theses and Dissertations

The ambiguous nature of idioms has been a persistent challenge for English language learners and researches alike. Problematic issues include identifying which idioms are most pertinent for study, and the question of how frequently idiom forms found in dictionaries and other canonized resources actually function as idioms in real language use. This study differentiates between idiom forms used idiomatically (idiom-principle) versus literally (open-choice principle), and provides quantitative data to assess this difference. The data was obtained through a corpus analysis of 1,000 randomly-selected idioms in 10,000 randomly-selected contexts (10 contexts per idiom), and revealed that the majority of idiom forms …

Evaluating The Affective Impact Of A Place-Based Learning Course Project In The Geosciences, Nathan Charlton

Masters Theses

Coping with issues such as climate change and depletion of natural resources demands a scientifically literate public. For many students, the only exposure to earth science comes in a college-level general education geoscience course. One way to engender positive attitudes toward and interest in earth science among these students (the future public) is to connect learning to actual places to which students have a personal attachment.

This study seeks to evaluate the impact of a place-based learning project (MyPlace) currently in use in an introductory geosciences general education course at Western Michigan University. Students in the MyPlace project select a …

A Key To Success In Healthcare Education: Getting Stakeholder Commitment, Linda Parry Carney

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

A large teaching hospital in the Middle Atlantic United States has been working to improve outcomes related to falls, delirium, pressure ulcers and length of stay. One contributor to all of these concerns is a lack of mobility of patients. Nursing staff relied on physician orders and physical therapy to get patients moving. An Advanced Practice Nurse developed an evidence-based nurse driven protocol for nurses to take the initiative to get patients moving. A team of Nursing Professional Development (NPD) practitioners met to discuss the knowledge gap and the best way to close this gap. This group determined much more …

Bridging The Gap By Supporting Our Future, Andrea Sweeny, Danielle Coyne Dec 2017

Bridging The Gap By Supporting Our Future, Andrea Sweeny, Danielle Coyne

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

According to Kramer (1974), novice nurses transition through three phases during their first year including a period of reality shock. Between 35-60% of new graduates change their place of employment during the first year and can account for more than 50% of total nurse turnover in some hospitals (Newhouse, Hoffman, & Hairston, 2007). In order to decrease attrition, supportive measures are needed for new graduates. Although new graduates identify a mentor during orientation, they experience difficulty meeting during work hours due to patient care needs. When novice nurses do not ask questions, they are assumed to be competent, which leads …

Fatty Acid Concentration And Phase Transitions Modulate Aβ Aggregation Pathways, Pratip Rana, Dexter N. Dean, Edward D. Steen, Ashuwin Vaidya, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari, Preetam Ghosh

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Aggregation of amyloid β (Aβ) peptides is a significant event that underpins Alzheimer disease (AD) pathology. Aβ aggregates, especially the low-molecular weight oligomers, are the primary toxic agents in AD and hence, there is increasing interest in understanding their formation and behavior. Aggregation is a nucleation-dependent process in which the pre-nucleation events are dominated by Aβ homotypic interactions. Dynamic flux and stochasticity during pre-nucleation renders the reactions susceptible to perturbations by other molecules. In this context, we investigate the heterotypic interactions between Aβ and fatty acids (FAs) by two independent tool-sets such as reduced order modelling (ROM) and ensemble kinetic …

On The Ground State And Evolution Of Structural And Transport Properties Of Tin Selenide, Yufei Liu Dec 2017

On The Ground State And Evolution Of Structural And Transport Properties Of Tin Selenide, Yufei Liu

All Dissertations

The recent surge of interest in tin selenide (SnSe) is due to the reported record-high thermoelectric figure of merit at elevated temperatures. While the researchers are exerting tremendous efforts to further improve the thermoelectric performance of SnSe via doping and nanostructuring, it is getting more and more apparent that SnSe is fascinating in many aspects of fundamental physics. SnSe is, in many aspects, an outlier of the current materials selection rules for high thermoelectric performance. Hence, answering why thermoelectric performance is high in SnSe should come before addressing how to further improve its thermoelectric performance. To this end, there are …
