Amake: Cached Builds Of Top-Level Targets, Jim Buffenbarger
Amake: Cached Builds Of Top-Level Targets, Jim Buffenbarger
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper describes a software-build tool named Amake, an extension of GNU Make. Its additional features solve important problems that have, until now, only been addressed by “high-end” build tools (e.g., ClearCase and Vesta).
With a typical build tool, if a top-level target must be updated, intermediate targets must be built from sources, and then combined to build the top-level target. The enhancements described here allow a top-level target to be fetched from a shared cache, without building, or even fetching its intermediate-target dependencies. Thus, a developer’s workspace may need only contain sources and top-level targets. This reduces build time, …

Mechanical Specific Energy Versus Depth Of Cut In Rock Cutting And Drilling, Yaneng Zhou, Wu Zhang, Isaac Gamwo, Jeen Shang Lin
Mechanical Specific Energy Versus Depth Of Cut In Rock Cutting And Drilling, Yaneng Zhou, Wu Zhang, Isaac Gamwo, Jeen Shang Lin
Faculty Publications
The relationship between Mechanical Specific Energy (MSE) and the Rate of Penetration (ROP), or equivalently the depth of cut per revolution, provides an important measure for strategizing a drilling operation. This study explores how MSE evolves with depth of cut, and presents a concerted effort that encompasses analytical, computational and experimental approaches. A simple model for the relationship between MSE and cutting depth is first derived with consideration of the wear progression of a circular cutter. This is an extension of Detournay and Defourny's phenomenological cutting model. Wear is modeled as a flat contact area at the bottom of a …
Using Multiple Intelligence Theory To Aid In Reading Comprehension, Kelsy Neil
Using Multiple Intelligence Theory To Aid In Reading Comprehension, Kelsy Neil
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The main purpose of this study is to determine if using Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Theory to guide activities for literature groups aids in student comprehension. Students in three literature groups at the fifth and sixth grade level were given a survey to determine each student’s intelligence scores. After each student’s intelligence scores were found, the average of each intelligence score was used to determine the groups’ strongest and weakest intelligences. Activities were then made for each group to correlate with their strongest and weakest intelligences and comprehension was tested after each reading assignment and activity was completed via a …
Analyzing Coxsackievirus B3 Genomic Rna By Site Directed Mutagenesis And Shape Analysis, Sara Smith
Analyzing Coxsackievirus B3 Genomic Rna By Site Directed Mutagenesis And Shape Analysis, Sara Smith
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Virulent Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is linked to myocarditis, pancreatitis, and type I diabetes. Avirulent CVB3 doesn’t cause disease. CVB3 possesses a positive, single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) genome containing 7,400 nucleotides, organized into four sections: a 5’ untranslated region (5’ UTR), a single open reading frame, a 3’ untranslated region, and a poly-A tail. The 5’ UTR is 743 nucleotides divided into 7 domains. Mutations within the 5’ UTR can alter RNA structure, and thus alter virulence. Nucleotide associations responsible for higher level RNA folding patterns and structure haven’t been defined. We are investigating the 5’ UTR by selective 2’ hydroxyl …

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Simulations can be an active and engaging way for students to learn about natural selection, and many have been developed, including both physical and virtual simulations. In this study we assessed the student experience of, and learning from, two natural selection simulations, one physical and one virtual, in a large enrollment introductory biology lab course. We assigned students to treatments (the physical or virtual simulation activity) by section and assessed their understanding of natural selection using a multiple-choice pre-/post-test and short-answer responses on a post-lab assignment. We assessed student experience of the activities through structured observations and an affective …

Background—Aflibercept is a recombinantly-produced fusion protein that has potent anti-VEGF activity. We tested whether aflibercept has clinical activity in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). The recommended Phase 2 dose was 4 mg/kg but several patients treated at 1 mg/kg demonstrated prolonged progression-free survival (PFS). We therefore tested both doses in a parallel group randomized trial.
Methods—Eligible patients (pts) had histologically confirmed advanced or metastatic ccRCC and previous treatments including prior exposure to a VEGF RTKI. Patients received aflibercept (either 1 mg/kg or 4 mg/kg) day 1 of a 14-day cycle until progression. Patients randomized to 1 mg/kg …

The Effect Of Health Care Entrepreneurship On Local Health: The Case Of Medexpress In Appalachia, Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Joshua C. Hall
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
We test the hypothesis that the opening of an Urgent Care Center (UCC) has positive impacts on the local community. There are several mechanisms through which a UCC can have an impact: lower health care costs, emergency room decongestion, and improved access to medical information. We examine the entry of MedExpress into Appalachian counties between 2001 and 2013. Employing data from Health Resources Files, which provides information for all counties for specific years, we use Propensity Score Matching to create a year 2000 control group for the counties “treated” by MedExpress entry beginning in 2001. We then employ a standard …

Determination And Quantification Of Lead Content In Mammut Americanus Dentine Material By Anodic Stripping Voltammetry, Emma R. Shipley
Mastodon Tusk Project Posters
A 120,000-200,000 year old mastodon tusk of species Mammut americanus, recovered from Hampton, Iowa in 1933 (right) was tested for lead using a lead test from Home Depot.1 The lead test was returned positive, so Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV) was undertaken to determine the concentration of lead in the dentine material of the tusk. The lead concentration is of interest because lead could affect both the health of the conservator and researchers and also inform about the diet of the mastodon. Tusk dentine material (left) functions similarly to human teeth, and studies have shown that 90% of lead in the …

Mastodon Tusk Project Posters
According to the Roy J. Carver grant, one of the goals is to get the mastodon tusk back to its original state. The preservation methods have not been well documented, therefore determining what the best solvents to remove the different layers needs to be known. In order to do this, various solvents will be used and confirmed through UV-vis spectroscopy with a Diffuse Reflectance Accessory (DRA) attached. This will measure the percentage of light that gets reflected back towards the detector. The image to the left shows the various layers that have been used in preserving the tusk, including some …

What Is The Red Plaster In The Mastodon Tusk?, Tray Hickie
Mastodon Tusk Project Posters
During the first visit to the tusk, Dr. Sebree found the crack that had been filled with a strange plaster that was not known at the time.
After seeing the plaster glow from the small flashlight Dr. Sebree had with him, identifying this material seemed like an interesting project.
Due to the fact that the plaster’s makeup is unknown, but identifying the material it was made of, future attempts to restore and preserve the fossil can be done more safely in the event that the material is harmful
Initial x-ray analysis of the mastodon tusk revealed many unexpected surprises.

The topology of the enamel is an important topic to study how, on a microscopic level, the surface of the tusk is rough or smooth so that the correct restoration material and method are applied to the tusk. The method of study to find this information will be the SEM; which with the back scattered electrons will tell me the topography and chemical composition on the surface of the mastodon tusk fragment that will be tested, shown in the image below. SEM has better spacial resolution than optical microscopes do with the measuring tool provided by the program and the …

Fatigue Impacts On Hdpe Pipe Material Properties, Marjan Shahrokh Esfahani
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
During a pipe’s life cycle, failures occur due to numerous factors such as age, loading conditions, environmental conditions, installation quality, manufacturing procedures, operation and maintenance strategies and so on. Frequent pressure surges or fluctuations in a piping system may cause a fatigue failure as fatigue is one of the most important issues in water pipes due to water hammer impacts. Application of buried High Density PolyEthylene (HDPE) water pipelines has significantly increased in recent years, and PE4710 is a new member of HDPE family. So, there is not yet enough information about PE4710 long-term performance. Due to lack of enough …

Aermod Modeling Of Air Pollutant Emissions From Backup Generator Use In Lagos, Nigeria, Temitope Abayomi
Civil Engineering Theses - Archive
Generator emissions contribute to increase in air pollution. In developing countries with inadequate electricity supply, many people rely on back-up generators for long-term electricity supply. Nigeria is the second biggest importer of generators in Africa. As of 2009, it was estimated that 60 million people in Nigeria owned and operated small to medium size generators to provide electricity for their daily use. The sheer number of generators in use suggests that generator emissions are a significant source of air pollution in the country, particularly in urban cities. In this work, the concentrations of pollutants emitted from 50 generators in a …

Seismic Performance Of Double-Channel And Double-Hss Sections, Special Truss Moment Frame With Buckling Restrained Braces, And Long Span Special Truss Moment Frame, Chatchai Jiansinlapadamrong
Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Until recently, all special truss moment frame (STMF) experimental research was done on only double angle STMFs. In order to satisfy the code seismic drift limitation, especially for mid-rise and tall multistory buildings, a large column section is needed, when double angle sections are used. However, heavy chord members can be used in this instance. Due to configuration of STMFs, the chord members in the special segment of an STMF experience higher rotational demand than the story drift. As a result, there is a need to verify large rotational capacity of other heavy steel shapes. Recent analytical investigation and experimental …
