Taking A Byte Out Of Orientation: Use Of Technology For Onboarding, Kathie Poplar, Robin Lopez
Taking A Byte Out Of Orientation: Use Of Technology For Onboarding, Kathie Poplar, Robin Lopez
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Hospital orientation had a "Death by Power Point" foundation running over four consecutive days. Orientations run 13 times annually with populations averaging 18-20 participants. This model was costly, utilized a lot of resources and left new hires feeling overwhelmed. Information gleaned from the 2015 ANPD conference confirmed the need to move towards student- centered education to meet the needs of our tech-savvy employees. Modernization of orientation was accomplished by decreasing didactic sections utilizing an assortment of technology and hands on applications including methods to confirm knowledge. Various technology platforms were used for the creation of videos followed by "teach back" …

December 2017 marked 50 years since archaeologist Michael J. O’Kelly first observed the solar illumination of the burial chamber in the Neolithic passage tomb at Newgrange during the period of the winter solstice. O’Kelly subsequently recorded direct sunlight entering Newgrange through the ‘especially contrived slit which lies under the roof-box at the outer end of the passage roof’ on 21 December 1969. The discovery of this historic phenomenon, dating back over 5,000 years, captured the public interest and imagination at that time and ever since. In this major article published in the Winter 2017 edition of Archaeology Ireland (date of …

Fiscal Year 2017 Fhwa-536 Report For The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Steven Douglas Kreis, Candice Y. Wallace, Bryan Gibson, Sarah M. Mccormack
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires state transportation agencies to submit a biennial report on local highway finances. The purpose of these reports is to provide FHWA with the data it needs to capture the financing of highway activities at the local level. Based on this information, it can identify trends in revenue, expenditures, investments, and program development, and in turn make decisions about future investments. The report, FHWA-536, asks agencies to report on four areas of local highway finance: 1) disposition of highway-user revenues; 2) revenues used for roads and streets identified by source and funding type; 3) road …

Applicability Of Zipper Merge Versus Early Merge In Kentucky Work Zones, Erin Lammers-Staats, Jerry G. Pigman, Brian K. Howell, Adam J. Kirk
Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report
In an effort to improve work zone safety and streamline traffic flows, a number of state transportation agencies (STAs) have experimented with the zipper merge. The zipper merge differs from a conventional, or early, merge in that vehicles do not merge into the lane that remains open immediately after being notified of a lane closure. Rather, vehicles continue to occupy all lanes until they reach the taper, at which point — and directed by signage — vehicles take turns merging into the open lane, creating a zipper pattern. At the request of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), Kentucky Transportation Center …

Anti-Icing Properties Of Femtosecond Laser Surface Processed Material, Ryan James Bell
Anti-Icing Properties Of Femtosecond Laser Surface Processed Material, Ryan James Bell
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
In this thesis, the use of femtosecond laser surface processing (FLSP) to enhance the anti-icing properties of a commonly used aircraft alloy, Al 7075-O Clad is described. By changing the surface morphology through FLSP and the surface chemistry through siloxane vapor deposition, the wettability of Al 7075-O Clad was altered.
Condensation and the subsequent freezing of condensates on FLSP Al 7075-O Clad was studied. Both structure height and surface wettability were shown to play a role in the delay of freezing. Freezing occurred on the FLSP superhydrophilic surface faster than on the unprocessed Al 7075-O Clad surface, however, freezing was …
