On 2017 August 17 the merger of two compact objects with masses consistent with two neutron stars was discovered through gravitational-wave (GW170817), gamma-ray (GRB 170817A), and optical (SSS17a/AT 2017gfo) observations. The optical source was associated with the early-type galaxy NGC 4993 at a distance of just ~40 Mpc, consistent with the gravitational-wave measurement, and the merger was localized to be at a projected distance of ~2 kpc away from the galaxy's center. We use this minimal set of facts and the mass posteriors of the two neutron stars to derive the first constraints on the progenitor of GW170817 at the …

Hypermucoviscous Klebsiella Syndrome It's In The Community!, Muneeba Ahsan Sayeed, Nida Latif, Syed Faisal Mahmood
Section of Internal Medicine
Hypermucoviscous Klebsiella syndrome is a unique syndrome caused by a new variant of Klebsiella pneumoniae (KP), characterized by abscess formation at distant body sites. This emerging KP strain is different from the usual classic strains in having the rmp gene which increases capsule formation making this strain resistant to phagocytosis and helping in its dissemination to distant organs. A 50 years old diabetic man presented with facial swelling after dental procedure which progressively increased despite being on antibiotics. On examination he was febrile, had neck swelling with signs of inflammation and tender hepatomegaly. Ultrasonography showed submental and liver abscesses which …

Recursive Non-Local Means Filter For Video Denoising, Redha A. Ali, Russell C. Hardie
Recursive Non-Local Means Filter For Video Denoising, Redha A. Ali, Russell C. Hardie
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, we propose a computationally efficient algorithm for video denoising that exploits temporal and spatial redundancy. The proposed method is based on non-local means (NLM). NLM methods have been applied successfully in various image denoising applications. In the single-frame NLM method, each output pixel is formed as a weighted sum of the center pixels of neighboring patches, within a given search window.
The weights are based on the patch intensity vector distances. The process requires computing vector distances for all of the patches in the search window. Direct extension of this method from 2D to 3D, for video …
Model Predictive Power Management Of A Hybrid Electric Propulsion System For Aircraft, Tyler J. Wall
Model Predictive Power Management Of A Hybrid Electric Propulsion System For Aircraft, Tyler J. Wall
Masters Theses
This work presents the switched optimal power flow control for an aircraft with a hybrid electric propulsion system. The propulsion system is a switched system that operates in either of two modes: (i) battery discharging and electric motor propelling and (ii) battery charging and electric motor generating. The aircraft model and components that form the hybrid propulsion system are modeled as either an algebraic power source/sink or as a dynamic model with appropriate power and state interconnections. With the system model defined, a model predictive control power management strategy is set fourth which minimizes a performance index that includes altitude …

Masters Theses
The purpose of this paper is to explore how social justice art education and visual literacy can facilitate growth and compassion for the diverse other in society. Social justice art encourages exploration of art-making in a variety of settings in order to dispel anxiety or misunderstandings about those affected by injustice. An investigation of original lesson plans designed to meet national core art standards will be introduced to elaborate on how social issues can be incorporated into a comprehensive art education curriculum based on critical and analytical inquiry at the middle school level.
Architectural Representation And The Dragon’S Lair In Beowulf, Margaret Heeschen
Architectural Representation And The Dragon’S Lair In Beowulf, Margaret Heeschen
Masters Theses
Since the early twentieth century, the dragon’s lair of Beowulf has been primarily associated with the early megalithic mounds of northern Europe. This interpretation of the space, however, does not account for the many contradictions present in the poet’s descriptions. In order to fully understand the quiddity of the dragon’s lair, we must resolve three major issues with previous interpretations: the use of rare words with unclear meanings, contradictions in descriptions of the physical space, and an assumption by scholars that the poet is describing a single type of space identifiable in the historical record. By addressing each of these …
Visualizing The Constructability Of A Steel Structure Using Building Information Modeling And Game Simulation, Mohammed Al Dafaay
Visualizing The Constructability Of A Steel Structure Using Building Information Modeling And Game Simulation, Mohammed Al Dafaay
Masters Theses
This research aims to visualize a steel structural design to: (1) analyze its constructability, and (2) support collaboration between project participants at the planning stage. The visualization uses Building Information Modeling (BIM) and game engine simulation to develop a realistic interactive simulation for constructability analysis. A case study experiment was conducted on visualizing the erection process of a steel structure to facilitate the understanding of needed construction operation. The simulation incorporated construction domain knowledge through various entity components and predefined interaction rules. Results showed that through such a visualization method, field operation can be observed in real-time at the planning …

Linear Elastic Mesh Deformation Via Localized Orthotropic Material Properties Optimized By The Adjoint Method, William L. Shoemake
Linear Elastic Mesh Deformation Via Localized Orthotropic Material Properties Optimized By The Adjoint Method, William L. Shoemake
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
The finite element method has been shown to be a powerful tool in computational engineering with recent application to electromagnetics and fluid dynamics. However, achieving the high orders of accuracy easily available to the finite element method has proven difficult due to conforming higher-order meshes to curved geometries. If higher-order nodes are not placed on the surface of the geometry error is introduced into the simulated solution. This barrier is largely a non-issue for inviscid meshes where a mid-edge node can be projected onto the nearest geometry surface with minimal detrimental side effects. Viscous meshes however have to deform most …
Identifying Users On Social Networking Using Pattern Recognition In Messages, Justin Joshuva
Identifying Users On Social Networking Using Pattern Recognition In Messages, Justin Joshuva
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Online social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, have become a huge part of many people's lives, often as their main means of communication with other people. Because of frequency of use and the apparent security measures of these sites, users often falsely believe the proffered identity of the person they are talking to. This blind belief sometimes results in security threats due to the passing of private or confidential information to the wrong user. This may lead to malicious readers getting a user's private information and using it illegally. This work proposes a mathematical model for identifying security threats …

Enhancing Paternal Engagement In A Coparenting Paradigm, Marsha Kline Pruett, Kyle D. Pruett, Carolyn P. Cowan, Philip A. Cowan
School for Social Work: Faculty Publications
Despite the benefits for children and families of fathers who are involved positively with their children, most parenting programs in the United States and globally focus on and collect evaluation data from mothers almost exclusively. Engaging fathers is still viewed as a complex endeavor that is only somewhat successful. In this article, we summarize what is known about engaging fathers in parenting programs, then argue that programs are most effective when coparenting is the focus early in family formation. We rely on two decades of the Supporting Father Involvement program as an example of an initiative that has been effective …
Public And Private Sector Earnings In Alaska, Andrew Bibler, Mouhcine Guettabi
Public And Private Sector Earnings In Alaska, Andrew Bibler, Mouhcine Guettabi
ISER Reports
We compare earnings in the Alaska public and private sector labor markets from 2001 -2016. Public sector laborers are older and more likely to be female, suggesting that taking these differences into consideration will be important in our comparisons. We also focus on the public-private sector earnings gaps for men and women separately, as the magnitude and even direction of the gap depends on this distinction. We go about this in three ways: unconditional comparisons, conditional earnings gaps, and comparing the earnings and growth of individuals who remain with the same employer. Below are the main findings: • The unconditional …

Perceived Self-To-Other Similarity As A Mediator Of The Effects Of Gender And Racial Composition On Identification In Small Groups, Randi L. Garcia
Perceived Self-To-Other Similarity As A Mediator Of The Effects Of Gender And Racial Composition On Identification In Small Groups, Randi L. Garcia
Psychology: Faculty Publications
Two group studies tested the mediating role of perceived diversity in the link between actual demographic composition and an individual’s identification with a small group. In these studies, a new type of dyadic perceived diversity—self-to-other perceived similarity—is introduced and measured. Further, a group actor partner interdependence model (GAPIM) approach was used to test mediation of the link between actual demographic composition and identification by perceived self-to-other similarity. In Study 1, 4- and 5-person small groups varying in gender composition interacted face-to-face. Results showed mediation of the effect of similarity in gender on group identification by self-to-other similarity. In Study 2, …

The Regression Smoother Lowess: A Confidence Band That Allows Heteroscedasticity And Has Some Specified Simultaneous Probability Coverage, Rand Wilcox
Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods
Many nonparametric regression estimators (smoothers) have been proposed that provide a more flexible method for estimating the true regression line compared to using some of the more obvious parametric models. A basic goal when using any smoother is computing a confidence band for the true regression line. Let M(Y|X) be some conditional measure of location associated with the random variable Y, given X and let x be some specific value of the covariate. When using the LOWESS estimator, an extant method that assumes homoscedasticity can be used to compute a confidence interval for M(Y|X = x). A trivial way of …
