The Design And Implementation Outcome Of An Online Undergraduate Thermodynamics Class, Dazhi Yang, Krishna Pakala Dec 2017

The Design And Implementation Outcome Of An Online Undergraduate Thermodynamics Class, Dazhi Yang, Krishna Pakala

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Online learning is not common for most undergraduate core engineering courses. However, the growing need for online engineering courses necessitates the design and delivery of online courses that can allow for the flexibility and convenience the distance learning experiences can offer. Thermodynamics is among the most difficult engineering subjects to teach, especially online, where instructors are unable to demonstrate the overwhelming number of equations and applications as they would in face-to-face lectures. This paper describes the design and development of an online, undergraduate thermodynamics class. It reports the implementation outcome of student final course grade and the students’ learning experience …

Combined Assimilation Of Satellite Precipitation And Soil Moisture: A Case Study Using Trmm And Smos Data, Liao-Fan Lin, Ardeshir M. Ebtehaj, Alejandro N. Flores, Satish Bastola, Rafael L. Bras

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper presents a framework that enables simultaneous assimilation of satellite precipitation and soil moisture observations into the coupled Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) and Noah land surface model through variational approaches. The authors tested the framework by assimilating precipitation data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and soil moisture data from the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite. The results show that assimilation of both TRMM and SMOS data can effectively improve the forecast skills of precipitation, top 10-cm soil moisture, and 2-m temperature and specific humidity. Within a 2-day time window, impacts of precipitation data assimilation on …

Statistics As Unbiased Estimators: Exploring The Teaching Of Standard Deviation, Nicholas H. Wasserman, Stephanie Casey, Joe Champion, Maryann Huey Dec 2017

Statistics As Unbiased Estimators: Exploring The Teaching Of Standard Deviation, Nicholas H. Wasserman, Stephanie Casey, Joe Champion, Maryann Huey

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This manuscript presents findings from a study about the knowledge for and planned teaching of standard deviation. We investigate how understanding variance as an unbiased (inferential) estimator – not just a descriptive statistic for the variation (spread) in data – is related to teachers’ instruction regarding standard deviation, particularly around the issue of division by n-1. In this regard, the study contributes to our understanding about how knowledge of mathematics beyond the current instructional level, what we refer to as nonlocal mathematics, becomes important for teaching. The findings indicate that acquired knowledge of nonlocal mathematics can play a role …

Investigating Fate Of Silver Nanoparticles In Wastewater Biofilms, Connie Marie Walden Dec 2017

Investigating Fate Of Silver Nanoparticles In Wastewater Biofilms, Connie Marie Walden

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As industrial advances make everyday life easier for human kind, the processes by which we need to maintain sanitary conditions for both water and wastewater treatment will become increasingly complex. Innovations in food packaging and textile design incorporate engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) to increase antimicrobial properties of clothing, maintain product color, and keep food in packaging from spoilage. For most products, ENPs released will enter the sanitary sewer system, and ultimately wastewater treatment plants. Biofilms grow universally on surfaces where a protective layer of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) shields attached cells from stressors. In wastewater treatment, complex biofilms are utilized as …

Seeing Prehistory Through New Lenses: Using Geophysical And Statistical Analysis To Identify Fresh Perspectives Of A 15th Century Mandan Occupation, Amber Marie Mitchum Dec 2017

Seeing Prehistory Through New Lenses: Using Geophysical And Statistical Analysis To Identify Fresh Perspectives Of A 15th Century Mandan Occupation, Amber Marie Mitchum

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Great Plains prehistoric research has evolved over the course of a century, with many sites like Huff Village (32MO11) in North Dakota recently coming back to the forefront of discussion through new technological applications. Through a majority of its studies and excavations, Huff Village appeared to endure as the final stage in the Middle Missouri tradition. Long thought to reflect only systematically placed long-rectangular structure types of its Middle Missouri predecessors, recent magnetic gradiometry and topographic mapping data revealed circular structure types that deviated from long-held traditions, highlighting new associations with Coalescent groups. A compact system for food capacity was …

Endocrine Disrupting Effects Of Halogenated Chemicals On Fish, Amy Elizabeth Godfrey Dec 2017

Endocrine Disrupting Effects Of Halogenated Chemicals On Fish, Amy Elizabeth Godfrey

Open Access Dissertations

Halogenated chemicals are commonly used in a variety of everyday products such as cookware, electronics, furniture and baby products. Some of these chemicals have been found to negatively affect development and endocrine disruption. Therefore, there is a need for the development of next generation replacements that are less toxic; however, more studies need to be conducted to ensure their safety. The main objective of this dissertation was to assess the endocrine disrupting potential of halogenated and next generation chemicals, singly and in mixtures, in fish. We tested three well studied halogens, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), tris (1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCPP) and tetrabromobisphenal …

Project-Oriented Safety Management Of Rural Local Roads, Thomas Hall Dec 2017

Project-Oriented Safety Management Of Rural Local Roads, Thomas Hall

Open Access Dissertations

Although rural areas make up 19% of the U.S. population and have 30% of the annual vehicle miles traveled (VMT), more than half of the annual U.S. traffic fatalities (in excess of 15,000) occur in rural areas. For higher-volume rural state roads with a considerable crash history, the effect of road geometry, infrastructure, traffic, and roadside features on crashes has been studied extensively. However, more than 80% of rural roads in Indiana and other heavily agricultural states are local roads. Rural local roads have lower crash frequencies than rural state roads, but greater crash rates (when adjusted for VMT). Rural …

Engineering Steep Transistors Towards Ultra Low Supply Voltage, Pengyu Long Dec 2017

Engineering Steep Transistors Towards Ultra Low Supply Voltage, Pengyu Long

Open Access Dissertations

Future Very-large-scale-integrated (VLSI) circuits require low supply voltage for minimizing the energy consumption, yet reducing supply voltage for MOSFETs typically increases OFF-current (IOFF ). Steep Subthreshold Swing (S.S.) devices can operate under low voltage without increasing IOFF . Ideal, completely coherent quantum transport calculations had predicted that superlattice MOSFETs (SL-MOSFET) may offer steep subthreshold swing performance below 60mV/dec to around 39mV/dec. However, the high carrier density in the superlattice source suggests that scattering may significantly degrade the ideal device performance. Such effects of electron scattering and decoherence in the contacts of SL-MOSFETs will be examined through a multi-scale quantum transport …

Skeletal Biomechanics And Response To Mechanical Load: A Comparative Approach In The Mouse And Chukar Partridge, Kari A. Verner Dec 2017

Skeletal Biomechanics And Response To Mechanical Load: A Comparative Approach In The Mouse And Chukar Partridge, Kari A. Verner

Open Access Dissertations

Dynamic mechanical loading plays an important role in regulating bone geometry and strength. A healthy skeleton adapts to the bone tissue strain profile and magnitude of loads it experiences on a daily basis in order to maintain reasonable safety factors. In skeletal diseases, such as osteoporosis, a bone’s ability to adapt and maintain structural integrity in response to increased mechanical strains is apparently impaired, which allows skeletal resorption to progress unabated and could eventually lead to mechanical failure. In order to develop better treatments for bone wasting diseases, it is important to understand the mechanobiology of how the healthy skeleton …

Electrophysiological, Behavioral, And Histological Assessment Of The Thalamocortical Network As A Stimulation Target For Central Auditory Neuroprostheses, Ryan Scott Verner Dec 2017

Electrophysiological, Behavioral, And Histological Assessment Of The Thalamocortical Network As A Stimulation Target For Central Auditory Neuroprostheses, Ryan Scott Verner

Open Access Dissertations

Brain-machine interfaces aim to restore natural sensation or locomotion to individuals who have lost such ability. While the field of neuroprostheses has developed some flagship technologies which have enjoyed great clinical success, such as the cochlear implant, it is generally understood that no single device will be ideal for all patients. For example, the cochlear implant is unable to help patients suffering from neurofibromatosis type 2, which is commonly characterized by bilateral vestibular schwannomas for which surgical removal requires transection of the auditory nerve. In an effort to develop stimulatory neuroprostheses which can help the maximum number of patients, research …

A Manifestation Of Chinese Tourists: Chinese Values And Touristic Behavior, Yunzi Zhang Dec 2017

A Manifestation Of Chinese Tourists: Chinese Values And Touristic Behavior, Yunzi Zhang

Open Access Dissertations

The rapid growth of China’s outbound tourism market has greatly contributed to today’s global economy. While destinations benefit economically from the activities of Chinese tourists, some public behaviors of this segment of the market have been criticized as disruptive to destinations’ social orders and are considered unexpected and annoying. The disapproval of these behaviors deserves scholarly attention as it essentially implies a socio-cultural disagreement on the appropriateness of public conduct. Applying a mixed method approach, this study first provides a theoretical portrayal of the Chinese tourist through the synthesis of classic Chinese scholars’ works. It then examines U.S. residents’ opinions …
