Nitrogen fi xation by the Haber–Bosch process has more than doubled the amount of fi xed N on Earth, significantly influencing the global N cycle. Much of this fi xed N is made into N fertilizer that is used to produce nearly half of the world’s food. Too much of the N fertilizer pollutes air and water when it is lost from agroecosystems through volatilization, denitrification, leaching, and runoff. Most of the N fertilizer used in the United States is applied to corn (Zea mays L.), and the profitability and environmental footprint of corn production is directly tied to N …

Sharing Responsibility For Divesting From Fossil Fuels, Eric S. Godoy Dec 2017

Sharing Responsibility For Divesting From Fossil Fuels, Eric S. Godoy

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

Governments have been slow to address climate change. If non-governmental agents share a responsibility in light of the slow pace of government action then it is a collective responsibility. I examine three models of collective responsibility, especially Iris Young's social connection model, and assess their value for identifying a collective, among all emitters, that can share responsibility. These models can help us better understand both the growth of the movement to divest from fossil fuels and the nature of responsibility for collective action problems. Universities and colleges share a responsibility because they occupy similar positions of, among other things, power …

Interviews And Conversations About Leaving Services (Icals): A Review Of Resources After Tanf, Maria C. Cole Dec 2017

Interviews And Conversations About Leaving Services (Icals): A Review Of Resources After Tanf, Maria C. Cole

Social Work Theses - Archive

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) policy is designed to protect the nation’s most vulnerable families from severe hardship. The policy encourages moving people from “welfare to work” and improving child welfare. TANF, though, has remained largely unchanged since its adoption in 1996 despite persistent poverty nationwide and worsening poverty in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. Consequently, TANF has not effectively responded to poverty nor has it improved child welfare. The researcher conducted a comprehensive literature review which identified employment barriers found to affect families leaving TANF services. Several studies illuminated that mental or behavioral health, substance abuse, race …

Interdisciplinary Collaboration And Metacognitive Reflection: A Case Study Of Faculty Teaching In Learning Communities, Melissa Perry Dec 2017

Interdisciplinary Collaboration And Metacognitive Reflection: A Case Study Of Faculty Teaching In Learning Communities, Melissa Perry

English Dissertations - Archive

This qualitative case study examines the nature of faculty collaboration within the context of academic learning communities using third generation activity theory as an organizing framework. First, this study investigates how faculty collaborate across disciplinary lines to create and implement curriculum for paired and team-taught interdisciplinary learning community courses. Furthermore, this study seeks to understand whether these collaborative practices provide opportunities for discipline-based metacognitive reflection. Through the analysis of semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and course documents, the study findings confirm that learning communities do, in fact, create opportunities for faculty to become more self-aware of their own disciplinary conventions and …

Devotion, Domesticity, And Healing Among Early Modern Women: Writing Religion And Medicine In Personal Manuscripts, Jana Jackson Dec 2017

Devotion, Domesticity, And Healing Among Early Modern Women: Writing Religion And Medicine In Personal Manuscripts, Jana Jackson

English Theses - Archive

The establishment of the Church of England in the sixteenth century instigated a period of turbulence as religious practices transitioned from medieval Catholicism to post-Reformation Protestantism. Protestant theology idealized proficient domesticity as an essential signifier of piety for women. In practice, daily spiritual examination, moral purity, competence in managing a household, and the efficacious administration of domestic medicine largely defined a pious Protestant woman. Consequently, women validated their piety by leaving evidence of these practices in diaries, autobiographical writing, and receipt books. Religious meditative writing and recipes occur side by side in early modern pious women's manuscripts intentionally because each …

Stereoscopic Architectural Photography And Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology, Douglas M. Klahr

School of Architecture Faculty Publications - Archive

Stereoscopic photography utilizes dual camera lenses that are placed at approximately the interocular distance of human beings in order to replicate the slight difference between what each eye sees and therefore the effect of parallax. The pair of images that results is then viewed through a stereoscope. By adjusting the device, the user eventually sees the two photographs merge into a single one that has receding planes of depth, often producing a vivid illusion of intense depth. Stereoscopy was used by photographers throughout the second half of the Nineteenth Century to document every building that was deemed to be culturally …

Wangari Maathai The Educator: Straddling Tradition And Modernity, Namulundah Florence

Journal of Global Education and Research

Wangari Muta Mary Jo Maathai’s (April 1, 1940 – September 25, 2011) public image highlights her nationality, her education both in and outside Kenya, her establishment of the Green Belt Movement (GBM) for which she received a Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, and her political activism. Advocates for female empowerment take solace in success stories like Maathai’s rise from a village girl to become a global icon of leadership. Yet, her mobility was more circumstantial than it was deliberate, and is inseparable from the uneasy compromise between the traditional gender roles of her youth with the critical consciousness nurtured in …

Toward A Multiple Mentor Model In Music Education, Kristina R. Weimer Dec 2017

Toward A Multiple Mentor Model In Music Education, Kristina R. Weimer

School of Music Faculty Publications

Literature supports the importance of mentoring relationships in making meaningful contributions to novice teacher induction, and that especially important in the relationship is matching mentor/mentee by subject and grade level and in close proximity. The physical location of mentors to mentees and their availability impacts the relationship. Proximity is necessary to view the mentor as accessible and provide opportunities for interactions during the school day.

In music education, matching mentor/mentee by subject and grade level and in close proximity can be challenging. Because of music's specialization, music teachers are often the only one in their building. I previously examined two …

Medicaid Managed Care And The Health Care Utilization Of Foster Children, Makayla Palmer, James Marton, Aaron Yelowitz, Jeffery Talbert

Economics Faculty Publications

A recent trend in state Medicaid programs is the transition of vulnerable populations into Medicaid managed care (MMC) who were initially carved out of such coverage, such as foster children or those with disabilities. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the impact of the transition of foster children from fee-for-service Medicaid coverage to MMC coverage on outpatient health care utilization. There is very little empirical evidence on the impact of managed care on the health care utilization of foster children because of the recent timing of these transitions as well as challenges associated with finding data sets large …

Recidivism And Juvenile Justice Youth: A Study On Recidivism Rates For Youth Awaiting Adjudication, Whitney L. Hunt

Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive

The United States incarcerates more youth than any other country in the world (Justice Policy Institute, 2009). Previous research has focused on recidivism rates of juvenile justice youth post-adjudication. However, a gap in literature exists concerning the relationship of recidivism rates for youth awaiting adjudication. This study seeks to determine what factors correlate with recidivism for youths in detention compared with youths who receive detention alternatives while awaiting adjudication in an urban area in the Southern United States. It is hypothesized that, based on previous research and theory, youth who receive detention while awaiting adjudication are more likely to recidivate …

In this dissertation, we present four journal articles in the area of game theory. In the first article, we define a generalized equilibrium for n-person normal form games. We prove that the Nash equilibrium and the mixed Berge equilibrium are special cases of the generalized equilibrium. In the second article, we study the computational complexity of finding a mixed Berge equilibrium in n-person normal form games. In particular, we prove that the problem is an NP-complete problem for n >= 3. In the third article, we give an interpretation of mixed strategies via resource allocation. Finally, in the fourth article, …

Automated Multistep Classifier Sizing And Training For Deep Learner, Kanishka Tyagi Dec 2017

Automated Multistep Classifier Sizing And Training For Deep Learner, Kanishka Tyagi

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Training algorithms for deep learning have recently been proposed with notable success, beating the start-of-the-art in certain areas like audio, speech and language processing. The key role is played by learning multiple levels of abstractions in a deep architecture. However, searching the parameters space in a deep architecture is a difficult task. By exploiting the greedy layer-wise unsupervised training strategy of deep architecture, the network parameters are initialized near a good local minima. However, many existing deep learning algorithms require tuning a number of hyperparameters including learning factors and the number of hidden units in each layer. Apart from this, …

Nearest Neighbor algorithms are non-parametric algorithms that use distance measure techniques for classification and regressions. This thesis uses the method of pruning to improve accuracy and efficiency of a nearest neighbor classifier and also states the different stages the pruning algorithm can be applied and shows the best stage for pruning which gives the maximum accuracy. The performance of the classifier is shown to be better than other improved nearest neighbor classifiers. A fast method of finding the optimal k in a k-nearest neighbor classifier is proposed in the thesis. A method of optimizing the distance measure using a second …

Analytical Technique To Evaluate Impact Of Mutual Coupling On Transmission Line Protection Schemes, Azade Brahman Dec 2017

Analytical Technique To Evaluate Impact Of Mutual Coupling On Transmission Line Protection Schemes, Azade Brahman

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

While there are numerous literatures that have addressed the impact of mutual coupling on the reliability and security of protection schemes and have provided possible mitigation solutions, there has not been adequate research and documentation presenting a comprehensive analytical approach to 1) estimate the magnitude of mutual coupling and 2) quantify the adverse impact of mutual coupling in real-life scenarios under several system faults across various types of protective elements. This should be considered as the first stage of any mutual coupling related study preceding the second stage in which the mitigation against mutual coupling is to be developed. The …
