Jittery Gauges: Combating The Polarizing Effect Of Political Data Visualizations Through Uncertainty, Bethany Blaire Hardy Dec 2017

Jittery Gauges: Combating The Polarizing Effect Of Political Data Visualizations Through Uncertainty, Bethany Blaire Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

Since the late 1800s, public data visualizations displaying election forecasts and results—such as the red and blue map of the United State—have presented an irreparably divided country. However, on November 8, 2016, the New York Times published a data visualization on their live presidential forecast page that broke over a century of visual expectations, inspiring many to tweet reactions to what popular media has dubbed the "jittery gauges." Not surprisingly, the tweets about this unique and difficult-to-interpret display were mostly negative. This paper argues, though, that the negative feedback indicates that the gauges, while imperfect, represent an important step away …

Theses and Dissertations

The Carnegie Quarry in northeastern Utah is world-renowned for the dinosaur skeletons it has produced and for its in situ display of dinosaur bones. The specimens excavated at Carnegie Quarry are displayed and curated in 20 repositories, most in North America. Data on these specimens in the forms of notes, photographs, publications, field maps, and so on, are scattered in an array of formats and institutions. The primary goal of this thesis is to develop a database linking these data with a digital map (GIS system) to make them readily accessible. To this end, a relational database was created using …

Livy's Republic: Reconciling Republic And Princeps In Ab Urbe Condita, Joshua Stewart Mackay Dec 2017

Livy's Republic: Reconciling Republic And Princeps In Ab Urbe Condita, Joshua Stewart Mackay

Theses and Dissertations

As early as Tacitus, Livian scholarship has struggled to resolve the "Livian paradox," the conflict between Livy's support of the Roman Republic and his overt approval of Augustus, who brought about the end of the Republic. This paper addresses the paradox by attempting to place Livy's writings within their proper historical and literary context. An examination of Augustus' position during the early years of Livy's writing shows that the princeps cloaked his power within the precedent of Republican autocracy, in which imperium could be unlimited in power so long as it was limited by time. As a result, although Augustus' …

Improving Opinion Mining By Classifying Facts And Opinions In Twitter - A Deep Learning Approach, Swayambhu P. Chatterjee Dec 2017

Improving Opinion Mining By Classifying Facts And Opinions In Twitter - A Deep Learning Approach, Swayambhu P. Chatterjee

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

The massive social media data presents businesses with an immense opportunity to extract useful insights. However, social media messages typically consist of both facts and opinions, posing a challenge to analytics applications that focus more on either facts or opinions. Distinguishing facts and opinions from social media may significantly improve both, fact seeking applications that aims to capture breaking news, as well as user opinion seeking applications that aims to evaluate users' sentiment towards an event or entity. Despite, the growing need, classifying facts from opinion in social media, has gained minimal attention.

In this study we examine the limitation …

Effects Of Teacher Praise And Reprimand Rates On Classroom Engagement And Disruptions Of Elementary Students At Risk For Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Kade Rolan Downs

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States educators often feel underprepared to manage student behavior in the classroom, which management is crucial for students with or at risk for Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) to learn effectively. Research on School-wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) programs has reflected how effective simple principles, such as increasing teacher praise and decreasing teacher reprimands, can be. The current study is a secondary analysis of data originally gathered from 65 teachers and 239 students across three states. Results of these analyses bring principles of effective SWPBS programs and educator needs together by identifying how teacher behaviors correlated with …

Towards An Archeology Of Silence: Perspectives On Subalternity, Khuram Waseem Dec 2017

Towards An Archeology Of Silence: Perspectives On Subalternity, Khuram Waseem

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

It is impossible to understand the postcolonial Subcontinent without religious discourse. It gives us a valid point of entry into postcolonial India and Pakistan. Growing unrest and intolerance in the region compels us to ask, “to what extent the colonial past of these two countries is responsible for their present condition? Digging deep in the past, we would find indelible marks of colonial atrocities. Without the colonization of mind, territorial control is not possible. Religion is one of the tools of the colonizer to mentally dominate the native population. Territorial colonialism is temporal but mental colonialism is permanent; it leaves …

Optimizing System I/Os With Bϵ Trees | Optimizing System I/Os With Bïµ Trees, William Jannen Dec 2017

Optimizing System I/Os With Bϵ Trees | Optimizing System I/Os With Bïµ Trees, William Jannen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Write-optimized dictionaries (WODs) are useful building blocks for storage systems. A good WOD implementation performs both small writes and large scans efficiently; transfers data in large enough units to utilize most of the device’s available bandwidth; and aggregates many logical operations into each I/O. A Bϵ-tree is an asymptotically optimal WOD with several implementations that exhibit these desirable qualities. By analyzing three uses of Bϵ-trees in storage systems, this dissertation shows that the conventional wisdom that storage system designs must choose either efficient sequential reads or efficient random writes is false. Bϵ-tree-based storage systems overcome this perceived trade-off by deferring …

Monitoring And Control Of Large Scale Power Grid Failures With Imperfect Communication, Jose Eduardo Cordova Garcia Dec 2017

Monitoring And Control Of Large Scale Power Grid Failures With Imperfect Communication, Jose Eduardo Cordova Garcia

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The wide area monitoring and control network is the core component of the envisioned Smart Grid (SG). A common assumption in the design of SG applications is that such data network behaves perfectly, i.e. no delay, no packet loss. In this dissertation, we examine the effect of communication issues on the power grid operation and present the design of communications-aware schemes for monitoring and control schemes of power line failures. Recently, high precision data have become available through Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). Ideally, using phasor data the system-wide status of power lines can be monitored. We argue that the discovery …

Soldados Del Infortunio: Sustratos De La Colonialidad En La Literatura Bã©Lica Caribeã±A | Soldados Del Infortunio: Sustratos De La Colonialidad En La Literatura Bélica Caribeña, Rubén González-Jiménez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explores the coloniality of being in mid-twentieth century Spanish Caribbean war literature. I examine literature as a means of fostering decolonial thinking, as working to reverse coloniality’s effects. The dissertation takes into account the context that triggered the armed conflicts in which Spanish Caribbean soldiers were involved. It emphasizes the United States’ imperialistic attitude towards the Caribbean, a common factor in threading stories of male affect. In the first chapter, I study four short stories by Emilio Díaz Valcárcel which focus on the participation of Puerto Rican soldiers in the United States Army during the Korean War. In …

The Coast Isn't Clear: An Economic Model Of Home Values And Water Clarity In Suffolk County, N.Y., Mark Nepf

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This research analyzes the Suffolk County, New York real estate market to determine if water quality in the three major Long Island water bodies (the Long Island Sound, the South Shore Bays, and the Peconic Estuary System) are affecting home values. Water quality is measured by clarity, as this is the most objective measure of a water body's quality that is readily available to property buyers and sellers. Suffolk County is an ideal location for this study, as water quality has been consistently monitored for more than four decades, and local water bodies regularly experiences dense algal blooms that can …

Panorama And Proximity In Levinas And The Stoics, Carlie Anglemire Dec 2017

Panorama And Proximity In Levinas And The Stoics, Carlie Anglemire

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Panorama and Proximity in Levinas and the Stoics is a comparative study of the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas and the Stoics centered on their shared emphasis on the ethical importance of disinterestedness and putting the ego in its place. The Stoics aim to perfect their self-control in order to reach the imperturbable state of the sage and become impervious to what one cannot change, while Levinas emphasizes the inevitability of the rupture of the self by others who both call us into question and captivate us. Overall, Levinas tends to highlight both the value and inevitability of the dethroning of …

A Day At The Beach: Linking Biological Activity In The Ocean To Chemical Properties Of Sea-Spray Aerosol, Wendy Paula Kilthau Dec 2017

A Day At The Beach: Linking Biological Activity In The Ocean To Chemical Properties Of Sea-Spray Aerosol, Wendy Paula Kilthau

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Recent studies have shown that sea-spray aerosol (SSA) particles are largely composed of inorganic salts and organic matter (OM). It has been suggested that phytoplankton and bacteria and the organic compounds released from cells are a possible origin for this airborne OM. Transparent exopolymer (TEP) and Coomassie stainable particle (CSP) concentrations in the ocean surface increase during phytoplankton bloom conditions. The sea-surface microlayer (SML), the interface for all air-sea interactions can become enriched in these materials and SSA formation. A new system, the Breaker Emulating Aerosol Chamber (BEACH) was developed to study the production of SSAs in a self-contained, controlled …

Base Excision Dna Repair In The Mitochondria Of Differentiated Neuronal Cells, Rachel Audrey Caston Dec 2017

Base Excision Dna Repair In The Mitochondria Of Differentiated Neuronal Cells, Rachel Audrey Caston

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Healthy mitochondria are vital for maintaining neuronal activity over the lifespan of an organism. Since mitochondria contain their own DNA, functional DNA repair pathways in the organelle are necessary for mitochondrial integrity. However, mitochondria do not have the complete complement of DNA repair pathways found in the nucleus. Thus far, base excision DNA repair (BER), mismatch repair, and double-strand break repair have been detected in mitochondria, although these pathways involve fewer proteins than is the case in the nucleus. Of the DNA repair pathways operating in mitochondria, BER acts on small, non-distorting base lesions, the main type of damage expected …

Negative Charges At Mek1 Kinase Consensus Sites Downregulate Ndt80 Activity During Budding Yeast Meiotic Prophase Without Affecting Protein Stability, Robert Gaglione Dec 2017

Negative Charges At Mek1 Kinase Consensus Sites Downregulate Ndt80 Activity During Budding Yeast Meiotic Prophase Without Affecting Protein Stability, Robert Gaglione

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Meiotic recombination promotes the formation of crossovers between homologous chromosomes to ensure their proper segregation in Meiosis I. Crossovers are formed by the repair of programmed double strand breaks (DSBs) during meiotic prophase. In budding yeast, the meiotic recombination checkpoint delays meiotic progression until all DSBs have been repaired and is under the control of the meiosis-specific Mek1 kinase. The meiosis-specific transcription factor Ndt80 activates the transcription of hundreds of genes, including those required for prophase exit and the meiotic divisions. Transcription of NDT80 occurs in two stages, mediated first by Ime1 and then by Ndt80 itself. Ime1-transcribed Ndt80 is …

The In Vivo Detection Of Outer Membrane Lysis During Spore Wall Assembly In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Using A Novel Split Gfp Assay, John Peter Zinno Dec 2017

The In Vivo Detection Of Outer Membrane Lysis During Spore Wall Assembly In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Using A Novel Split Gfp Assay, John Peter Zinno

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The regulation and mechanism of outer membrane (OM) lysis duringspore wall assembly is not well understood. Although the timing of OM lysis has been established in previous studies, this event has never been assayed for. To this end, a new method was developed to assay the lysisof the OM during sporulation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the splitGFP assay. By expressing complementary fragments of GFP in the ascal cytoplasm and the lumen between the OM and the spore plasma membrane (SPM), the lysis of the OM could be detected by the reconstitution of a functional GFP protein in the ascal cytoplasm as …

Identification Of Stem Cell Markers In The Model Organism Nematostella Vectensis, Esau Cruz Gutierrez Dec 2017

Identification Of Stem Cell Markers In The Model Organism Nematostella Vectensis, Esau Cruz Gutierrez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Nematostella vectensis possess a robust regenerative ability that is characteristic of other cnidarians and highly regenerative model organisms that use stem cells to rebuild missing parts. By identifying somatic stem cell populations and their relationship with regeneration, breakthroughs in regenerative medicine can be made. This study focused on several stem cell marker candidates, Cniwi1, Cniwi2, FoxO and Lin28, as their roles have been associated with stem cell regulation, renewal, and cellular processes. Documenting the spatial and temporal expression patterns of these candidate genes will help validate their functions as stem cell markers. The present study has found that FoxO and …

Changes In Functional Neural Network Organization During Working Memory Task Performance: Effects Of Age And Task Practice, Thang Manh Le

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The notion that cognitive processing is not only reflected by regional changes in neural activity in the brain but also by global changes in functional connectivity pattern has greatly motivated the network approach in examining the neural substrates of cognition and their relationship with behavior. Recent human neuroimaging evidence suggests specific cognitive processes may involve distinct spatiotemporal patterns of functional connectivity across task conditions. For instance, increased cognitive demand has been shown to evoke greater network integration while changes in functional network architecture have been associated with shifting between cognitive states. However, little is known about individual differences in the …

Religious Liberty And The Business Corporation, Ronald J. Colombo Dec 2017

Religious Liberty And The Business Corporation, Ronald J. Colombo

Journal of International Business and Law

Many in the world of business fail to allow their religious convictions to influence their business decisions. This is unfortunate. For teachings from across the religious spectrum generally counsel in favor of conduct and practices that receive near universal acclaim. From improved environmental stewardship, to better treatment of workers, religious traditions proffer an approach to business that, to a large degree, addresses serious concerns raised by a wide range of business's critics over the years. Moreover, evidence suggests that religiously motivated businesspeople practice what they are preached.

It would seem imperative, then, to harness the largely untapped power of religion …

Campus Climate, Peer Dispositions, And The Inclusion Of Lgbq And Transgender Students At A Jesuit University, Cassie L. Barnhardt, Jodi Linley, Amanda L. Mollet, Carson W. Phillips, Ryan L. Young Dec 2017

Campus Climate, Peer Dispositions, And The Inclusion Of Lgbq And Transgender Students At A Jesuit University, Cassie L. Barnhardt, Jodi Linley, Amanda L. Mollet, Carson W. Phillips, Ryan L. Young

Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal

Using a campus climate framework, this study identifies students who hold positive dispositions towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer (LGBQ) and transgender students at a Jesuit university. Findings reveal that just more than one-quarter of students hold positive dispositions toward LGBQ and transgender students and desire that the campus work towards being more inclusive towards this group. Our binomial logistic regression of 602 student responses demonstrated that women are more inclined to hold positive dispositions. Similarly, students who agree that non-Catholics should be supported by their campus are also inclined to hold positive dispositions toward LGBQ and transgender students. Further, we …
