Bohemians: Greenwich Village And The Masses, Joanna Levin
Bohemians: Greenwich Village And The Masses, Joanna Levin
English Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"This chapter traces the convergence of 'the revolt against puritanism' and 'the revolt against capitalism' in the 1910s, focusing on the most celebrated American bohemia Greenwich Village - and on The Masses, the Village periodical that provided the most influential expression of the double-edged bohemian revolt. The effort to combine the personal and the political, the artistic and the social helped fuel a host of interconnected movements and alliances within the bohemian milieu, and the bohemians called upon both Marx and Freud in the effort to promote revolutionary change. Often riddled with internal contradictions and susceptible to forces of …
One-Shot Learning In Deep Sequential Generative Models, Hanyu Guo
One-Shot Learning In Deep Sequential Generative Models, Hanyu Guo
All Theses
Regardless of the Deep Learning community's continuous advancements, the challenging domain of one-shot learning still persists. While the human brain is capable of learning a new visual concept with ease, sometimes even at a glance, Deep Learning-based techniques show serious drawbacks in handling problems with small datasets. Much of the existing work on one-shot learning employs a variety of sophisticated network algorithms, prior domain knowledge, and data manipulation to address the generalization challenges presented in such problems. In this work, we demonstrate a one-shot learning method that contains three learning networks — a deep sequential generative model, a candidate network, …
Live Load Distribution Factors And Uhpc Shear Key Performance Of Scdot Next D Beam And Solid Slab Bridges, Francis Vincent Filosa
Live Load Distribution Factors And Uhpc Shear Key Performance Of Scdot Next D Beam And Solid Slab Bridges, Francis Vincent Filosa
All Theses
For short to medium span bridges experiencing lower average daily traffic (ADT), the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) currently utilizes both hollow core and solid slab precast concrete span bridge sections. The intended advantages of these bridge sections were that they could be built according to an accelerated bridge construction (ABC) schedule and have increased durability. Increasing a bridge's durability has economic advantages since they require less maintenance and have a greater lifespan. Both the precast hollow core and solid slab spans have not met the SCDOT's durability requirements. Deterioration of the grout key between adjacent precast members has …

Quantification Of The Spatial Distribution Of Radionuclides In Field Lysimeters With A Collimated High-Resolution Gamma-Ray Spectrometer, Bryan James Erdmann
All Theses
The objective of this work is to quantify the one-dimensional spatial distribution of radionuclides in field lysimeters from the Radionuclide Field Lysimeter Experiment (RadFLEX) facility at the Savannah River Nationals Laboratory (SRNL). The lysimeters, containing 137Cs, 60Co, 133Ba and 152Eu incorporated either into solid wasteforms (Portland cement and reducing grout) or introduced into soil via a filter paper wasteform, were weathered for three to four years. The initial contaminant activities range from 4.0 to 9.0 MBq for the cementitious wasteforms and 0.25 to 0.47 MBq for the filter paper wasteform. An analytical method was developed to …

Homelessness Among Women Veterans: A Systematic Review Of The Risk Factors, Staceyann Graham
Social Work Theses - Archive
Background: As more women joined the armed forces the population of women veterans inevitably increased and with it so did the rates of women veteran homelessness. Women veterans are a unique group of women who also possess protective factors from homelessness, yet are 3 to 4 times likely to become homeless than non-veteran women. The purpose of this systematic review is to glean from other articles and studies what the risk factors for women veteran homelessness are. Method: A systematic review of 7 articles were conducted using the PRISMA method as a guideline for selecting the articles. Results: 5 articles …

The Relationship Between Nonverbal Communication And Patient Willingness To Comply In Framed, Low-Risk Medical Settings, Rachael A. Katz
The Relationship Between Nonverbal Communication And Patient Willingness To Comply In Framed, Low-Risk Medical Settings, Rachael A. Katz
Communication Studies
This study discusses framing and communication tactics in the medical field. It specifically aims to understand whether expertise and empathetic nonverbal communication impacts patient willingness to comply with physician directives in gain- and loss-framed medical settings. Framing has been studied in many settings, including medical situations, and has been found to impact decision-making. This experiment utilizes college-aged individuals to examine Meningitis, a disease where the most at-risk group is college aged young adults. Participants were exposed to one of six conditions to examine whether perceived expertise/empathy in their scenario impacted willingness to comply with the doctor directives. Although no mediation …

Effect Of A Ubiquitous Moral Cue On Ethical Leadership, Moral Disengagement And Goal Difficulty: Real-World Outcomes Of A Novel Behavioural Intervention By Mobile Application Technology, Boon Heon Tan
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
Firms invest significant resources in their ethical infrastructure to influence the ethical decision-making of employees. The advent of mobile technology has extended the frontier of interventions that may discourage unethical behaviour, through the use of ubiquitously-present mobile-based moral cues. I conducted a prospective, randomized field experiment, to study how a ubiquitous moral cue may positively enhance ethical decision-making. Sales professionals working in a pharmaceutical firm in China were assigned randomly by teams to either receive, or not, a mobile application from their firm’s compliance department. Over six months, participants completed three cross-sectional surveys, and were randomly monitored by an independent …

Personhood Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Vincent J. Samar
Personhood Under The Fourteenth Amendment, Vincent J. Samar
Marquette Law Review
This Article examines recent claims that the fetus be afforded the status of a person under the Fourteenth Amendment. It shows that such claims do not carry the necessary objectivity to operate reasonably in a pluralistic society. It then goes on to afford what a better view of personhood that could so operate might actually look like. Along the way, this Article takes seriously the real deep concerns many have for the sanctity of human life. By the end, it attempts to find a balance for those concerns with the view of personhood offered that should engage current debates about …

Codify This: Exculpatory Contracts In Wisconsin Recreational Businesses, Blake A. Nold
Codify This: Exculpatory Contracts In Wisconsin Recreational Businesses, Blake A. Nold
Marquette Law Review
It is common practice for recreational businesses, such as ski resorts or fitness centers, to require their customers to sign a release of liability form. The purpose of this release form is to relieve the business from any potential liability in the event a customer suffers an injury. However, since 1982, the Wisconsin Supreme Court has yet to uphold an exculpatory contract. Rather than attempting to lay out principles and guidelines for how to draft an exculpatory agreement—in hopes that it will be ruled enforceable—this Comment proposes that Wisconsin recreational businesses, like ski resorts or gyms, should not require customers …

Youth-Adult Partnerships In Work With Youth: An Overview, Heather Ramey, Heather Lawford, Wolfgang Vachon
Youth-Adult Partnerships In Work With Youth: An Overview, Heather Ramey, Heather Lawford, Wolfgang Vachon
Journal of Youth Development
Youth-adult partnerships in child and youth services engage the participants in collaborative, shared decision making, in areas such as governance, program planning and implementation, and advocacy. However, these partnerships often occur in isolation, and fail to engage in potentially useful, larger conversations about theory and research. Therefore, in an effort to provide common grounds for understanding and engaging in such partnerships, we offer an overview of current literature. We discuss definitions and discourses, describe models of youth-adult partnerships, and briefly consider current research on potential benefits for youth, adults, organizations, and communities. We also present challenges and promising practices for …

Progesterone For Prevention Of Preterm Birth: Shortcomings And Unintended Consequences Of The Orphan Drug Act, Rebekah E. Gee, Sreyram Kuy, Laura Karas
Progesterone For Prevention Of Preterm Birth: Shortcomings And Unintended Consequences Of The Orphan Drug Act, Rebekah E. Gee, Sreyram Kuy, Laura Karas
Articles
Preterm birth is a problem of major public health significance that continues to plague our country despite the existence of a therapy, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone caproate, with known efficacy in reducing the risk of spontaneous preterm birth among high-risk women. Over the past several years, the Louisiana Department of Health has undertaken a robust, multifaceted initiative to improve access to 17α-hydroxyprogesterone caproate, which resulted in a 3.5-fold increase in the percentage of eligible high-risk pregnant women in the Medicaid program who received the therapy between 2013 and 2016. Yet despite Louisiana's progress, the vast majority of the eligible population still fails to …
Survey Of Self-Determination Constructs In Higher Education Students With Disabilities And Campus Service Improvements, Jennifer L. Raasch
Survey Of Self-Determination Constructs In Higher Education Students With Disabilities And Campus Service Improvements, Jennifer L. Raasch
All Dissertations
This dissertation is an exploratory study on self-determination in students with disabilities in a postsecondary environment. Two questions were asked on self-determination levels in higher education students with disabilities and vital self-advocacy skills in higher education. A survey with closed-ended and open-ended questions was administered to gather data. Critical disability theory provided the conceptual framework for the study. Federal disability laws required students with disabilities be provided with transitional services which incorporated self-determination and self-advocacy skills from K-12 to postsecondary education institutions. However, a review of current research literature suggested transitional services might not be administered in the same manner …
