Interventions To Increase Diabetes Self-Management Education Referral And Attendance, Genevieve Talamantez Dec 2017

Interventions To Increase Diabetes Self-Management Education Referral And Attendance, Genevieve Talamantez

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Despite the proven benefits of diabetes self-management education (DSME), referral and attendance remains suboptimal. DSME has the ability to encourage self-care behavior, improve clinical outcomes, and improve quality of life in a cost-effective manner. The American Diabetes Association recommends that all people with diabetes receive DSME in order to facilitate the knowledge, skills, and ability necessary for diabetic self-care. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Healthy People 2020, set a national diabetic patient education attendance target goal of 62.5% for adults. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to increase referral and attendance to DSME in type-2 …

Initiating Hpv Co-Testing For Women Aged 30-65 In An Ob/Gyn Practice Setting, Stephen Cavazos

Doctor of Nursing Practice

The purpose of this project was to improve the rate of successful human papilloma virus (HPV) screening in a small Texas based Women's Health clinic through a co-testing method. The intended goal was to increase the rate of HPV screening, from a 73% baseline, to 95% over a 10-week period for women between the ages of 30-65 years old. Approximately 79 million American women are currently infected with HPV, and 14 million people contract it every year. Seventy percent of cervical cancers today are caused by HPV, leading to approximately 12,820 new diagnoses of invasive cervical cancer predicted for 2017, …

Evidence-Based Discharge Education Guidelines To Improve Adherence To Self-Care And Decrease 30-Day Readmissions For Older Heart Failure Patients, Lisette Melton Dec 2017

Evidence-Based Discharge Education Guidelines To Improve Adherence To Self-Care And Decrease 30-Day Readmissions For Older Heart Failure Patients, Lisette Melton

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Heart failure is a complex, debilitating, chronic disease characterized by high mortality and frequent hospital readmissions. Heart failure affects 5.7 million people in the United States with 670,000 new patients diagnosed each year. Patients are most vulnerable during the transition from the acute care setting to home. Limited patient knowledge on symptom recognition leads to detrimental outcomes for the patients; therefore, discharge education is paramount for decreasing readmissions. The national benchmark for 30-day readmission is 27%. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to improve compliance with the 2013 American Heart Association guidelines through discharge education by Telemetry staff …

Provider Adherence To Prescribing The Elimination Diet, Seth Osgood Dec 2017

Provider Adherence To Prescribing The Elimination Diet, Seth Osgood

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Allergy-related diseases, chemical sensitivities, and food intolerances have increased dramatically over the last 20 years in both the pediatric and adult populations, contributing to escalating rates of morbidity. Despite an abundance of literature supporting the negative impact food reactions can have in multiple disease states, food reactions continue to be seen as a modern enigma in medicine and are often met with great skepticism. There are a variety of interventions available to identify food reactions in both adults and children; yet, the traditional elimination diet remains the standard of care. Regardless of its utility and clinical effectiveness in the healthcare …

The Effect Of Outsourcing On The Change Of Wage Share, Tianqi Li Dec 2017

The Effect Of Outsourcing On The Change Of Wage Share, Tianqi Li

All Theses

The technology breakthroughs and tariff reductions of the last several decades have reduced the costs of trade. The classical Heckscher-Ohlin model cannot explain the pattern of the change in nonproduction wage share: the relative wages of nonproduction and production workers increased steadily since 1980s. The increasing wage gap leads to increasing income inequality, growing poverty and strains the social fabric. Hence, we need an alternative approach to explain the increasing “wage gap” between nonproduction and production workers. Feenstra developed a trade in intermediate model which estimates the how much outsourcing contributes to the total change in nonproduction wage share and …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Currently, there is a lack of surveys that report the occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in the whiteheaded capuchin monkey (Cebus albifrons). We therefore assessed the presence and richness (= number of different parasite genera) of parasites in C. albifrons in wildlife refuges (n = 11) and in a free-ranging group near a human village (n = 15) in the Ecuadorian Amazon. In the 78 samples collected (median of 3 samples per animal), we identified a total of 6 genera of gastrointestinal parasites, representing protozoa, nematodes, acanthocephalans and cestodes. We observed a high prevalence (84%) across the 26 individuals, with the …

The Human Journey As Work In Progress, Kymberly Day Dec 2017

The Human Journey As Work In Progress, Kymberly Day

All Theses

Sampling gesture, form, and monumentality from Classical figure sculpture, art history becomes an avenue for exploring tropes of the parallels between man and animal. Raw construction and shipping materials comprise these figures, interrupting conventions of display, archive, transport, and institution. Species are spliced and integrated into the human figure in each of the compositions. Traditionally, the animal is used as metaphor for different human conditions, emotions, and behaviors; our relationships to animals is one that stands the test of time in art. The animal becomes an extension of the figure's human-ness, while also acting as mere prop for the figure. …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

NADPH oxidase 5 (NOX5) generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been implicated in signaling cascades that regulate cancer cell proliferation. To evaluate and validate NOX5 expression in human tumors, we screened a broad range of tissue microarrays (TMAs), and report substantial overexpression of NOX5 in malignant melanoma and cancers of the prostate, breast, and ovary. In human UACC-257 melanoma cells that possesses high levels of functional endogenous NOX5, overexpression of NOX5 resulted in enhanced cell growth, increased numbers of BrdU positive cells, and increased γ-H2AX levels. Additionally, NOX5-overexpressing (stable and inducible) UACC-257 cells demonstrated increased normoxic HIF-1α expression and decreased …

A Just Transition: Why Transitioning Workers Into A New Clean Energy Economy Should Be At The Center Of Climate Change Policies, J. Mijin Cha

Fordham Environmental Law Review

With a hostile federal administration, states must take up the fight against climate change. Shortly after the United States withdrew from the Paris Climate Accord, governors from several states announced efforts to meet the targets. This article argues that state level climate actions must consider the economic consequences of climate policy. A shift away from fossil fuels is a fundamentally necessary step in the fight against climate change. However, the economic impact of this shift will be felt most acutely by fossil fuel workers and communities, many of which are already facing economic hardships. Attention and resources must be focused …

Small- And Medium-Sized Feedlots: Management And Marketing Survey Results, Matthew A. Diersen, Scott W. Fausti

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)

Increasing sector specialization has led to a decline in the number of smaller feedlots in the U.S. However, some operations continue to finish or background cattle as part of diversified operations. After a set of focus group sessions a survey was conducted of feedlots in South Dakota to determine the competitive tradeoffs among size of operation and production and risk management practices. The mail survey was designed in collaboration with the National Agricultural Statistical Service (NASS). NASS designed a stratified random sampling methodology for survey instrument dissemination. A bi-variate sampling stratification procedure was used; South Dakota feedlots with less than …

Customer Domination At Work: A New Paradigm For The Sexual Harassment Of Employees By Customers, Einat Albin Dec 2017

Customer Domination At Work: A New Paradigm For The Sexual Harassment Of Employees By Customers, Einat Albin

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article introduces a novel legal paradigm—customer domination at work—to address the sexual harassment of employees by customers. This new approach challenges the prevailing paradigm, which focuses on the employer-employee binary relationship. I show how, under current Title VII law, the prevailing paradigm leads to a weaker form of employer liability than other instances where employers are liable for the sexual harassment of their employees. The protection for workers is also limited. The same is true of two other legal regimes discussed in the Article: Germany and Britain. More importantly, I argue that the prevailing paradigm precludes a true understanding …
