Masculinities, Attachment Theory And Transformative Learning: A Discussion Of Some Theoretical Considerations For Developing An Emotionally Secure Teaching Praxis, Damien Carberry
Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)
This paper situates education as an integral component of the overall prison rehabilitation process. The article discusses how an educational practitioner's knowledge of attachment theory and masculinities can be utilized to develop a secure methodological teaching environment in the classroom of a prison education unit and create a space where transformative learning can take place. The link between attachment theory and the social and institutional composition of masculinities are considered for their influence on perceptions and concepts of the masculine self and masculine identity in general. The practitioner who is cognizant of these issues has the potential to develop secure …

Factors That Influence The Reading Motivation Of Fourth And Fifth Grade Students In A Midwest Urban Elementary School, Jo A. O'Garro
Factors That Influence The Reading Motivation Of Fourth And Fifth Grade Students In A Midwest Urban Elementary School, Jo A. O'Garro
Student Work
Reading motivation has been found to impact both literacy development and student achievement. Unfortunately, reading motivation tends to decline as students get older, and many students lose interest in reading by middle school (Edmunds & Bauserman, 2006). This decrease can have a negative impact on achievement and may also contribute to reading achievement gaps based on gender, race, and socioeconomic status. This study examined factors found in the Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) that influence reading motivation for fourth and fifth grade students in a Midwest urban elementary school. In addition, the researcher sought to determine if there were significant …

Host response to emerging pathogens is variable, causing uncertainty about population‐level impacts and challenging effective disease management. White‐nose syndrome (WNS) has caused catastrophic declines in some bat species, while others appear less impacted. Developing predictive models based on observed survival patterns can generate testable hypotheses about mechanisms driving population dynamics and contribute to the development of targeted approaches to disease management. We conducted a mark–recapture study of federally endangered Indiana bats (Myotis sodalis) during 2011–2016. Annual survival decreased from 0.78 (95% CI: 0.59, 0.89) and 0.79 (95% CI: 0.70, 0.86) for females and males, respectively, in 2011 to 0.74 (95% …

The Effects Of Media Multitasking On Congitive Control, Seth Thomas
The Effects Of Media Multitasking On Congitive Control, Seth Thomas
Honors Theses
Research has shown that heavy media multitaskers, people who engage in more than one form of media simultaneously, have a more difficult time distinguishing relevant from irrelevant stimuli when distractions are present (Ophir et al., 2009). Research has also shown that attention-related deficiencies are correlated with deficiencies in prefrontal cortex functioning. Further studies have determined that working memory and prefrontal cortex functioning are linked (Klingberg, 2002). This thesis aimes to examine how the amount of time people engage in media multitasking relates to performance on cognitive ability measures including working memory, attention control, and impulsivity. Results in the first study …

Madness In The Quijote: Don Quijote As Alonso Quijano's True Self, Paul J. Schmidt
Madness In The Quijote: Don Quijote As Alonso Quijano's True Self, Paul J. Schmidt
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the dichotomy of locura/cordura in Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quijote de la Mancha (1605/1615), specifically the nature of the madness of the titular character. Two different aspects of the Quijote are discussed: (1) the dual nature of the personality of Don Quijote/Alonso Quijano as being "sanely insane," that is, that although Don Quijote exhibits symptoms unmistakably indicative of madness, he maintains his sanity underneath this mad façade; the dedicatory sonnets that precede Part 1, the epitaphs that follow the end of Part 1, and the two poems that serve as an epilogue to Part 2 are examined …
Representation Of Deaf Characters And Culture In Young Adult Fiction, Kimberly Gangwish
Representation Of Deaf Characters And Culture In Young Adult Fiction, Kimberly Gangwish
Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
Adolescence is a time when teenagers begin to develop a sense of self and the cultures they belong to. Literature is a societal artifact that can inform and influence the development of cultural identity. Deaf culture is unique because a person is not born into the culture, but can choose to become a member of the culture. This cultural group is underrepresented in young adult literature. This underrepresentation places more importance on accurate representations of Deaf culture since young adult fiction may be the only exposure to Deaf culture that both hearing and deaf teenagers may have.

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) causes significant upper and lower respiratory disease in all age groups worldwide. The virus possesses a negative-sense single-stranded RNA genome of approximately 13.3 kb encapsidated by multiple copies of the nucleoprotein (N), giving rise to helical nucleocapsids. In addition, copies of the phosphoprotein (P) and the large RNA polymerase (L) decorate the viral nucleocapsids. After viral attachment, endocytosis, and fusion mediated by the viral glycoproteins, HMPV nucleocapsids are released into the cell cytoplasm. To visualize the subsequent steps of genome transcription and replication, a fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) protocol was established to detect different viral RNA …

Stroke is the second leading cause of death. Depressive disorder is characterized by period of sad mood and anhedonia occurring for two consecutive weeks. Among stroke survivors, the consequence of physical and psychological changes can be devastating. One of those psychological changes is post-stroke depression (PSD). Stroke itself has debilitating morbidity and superimposed PSD further decreases the quality of life of patients and impairs recovery. This study leads us to know the magnitude of post stroke depression.

A Rare Case Of Becker Disease In A 7 Year Old Boy, Prem Chand, Rozmeen Badruddin Husein, Fazal M. Arain
Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Becker Disease is an autosomal recessive version of the rare congenital disorder called Myotonia Congenita. Due to the rarity of Becker Disease, the genetic and pathological basis of this disease have not been studied well and possible diagnostic methods and techniques are yet to be explored. The existing method of diagnosis of such a case is predominantly dependent on the clinical examination. More work and studies need to be done on the diagnostic aspect of this disease to discover newer diagnostic methods for this disease, which are more reliable and specific. In order to develop better diagnostic methods for the …

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Neurological disorders are the impairments of nervous system and are an important and growing cause of morbidity, mortality, and disability. In addition to health costs, those suffering from these conditions are also frequently victimized of stigmatization and discrimination. Stigmatization further minimizes the patients' access to treatment and social activities. These disorders, therefore, require special attention particularly in developing countries where unfortunately, the burden of these disorders remains largely unrecognized. Moreover, the burden imposed by such chronic neurological conditions in general can be expected to be particularly devastating in poor populations. These conditions are emerging as severe public health concerns in …

5th National Headache Update, Abdul Malik
Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)
Headache is one of the most common disorders worldwide. On the World Health Organization's ranking of causes of disability, this would bring headache disorders into the 10 most disabling conditions for both genders, and into the five most disabling for women. The prevalence of headache disorders in Pakistan is high, and would be at least on par with that reported in other parts of the world, although a recent epidemiological survey suggests that the prevalence of migraines could be as high as 22%, almost twice that noted in the international literature. Over the years, the Pakistan Headache Society (PHS) has …

Three-Dimensional Vapor Intrusion Modeling Approach That Combines Wind And Stack Effects On Indoor, Atmospheric, And Subsurface Domains, Elham Shirazi, Kelly G. Pennell
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Vapor intrusion (IV) exposure risks are difficult to characterize due to the role of atmospheric, building and subsurface processes. This study presents a three-dimensional VI model that extends the common subsurface fate and transport equations to incorporate wind and stack effects on indoor air pressure, building air exchange rate (AER) and indoor contaminant concentration to improve VI exposure risk estimates. The model incorporates three modeling programs: (1) COMSOL Multiphysics to model subsurface fate and transport processes, (2) CFD0 to model atmospheric air flow around the building, and (3) CONTAM to model indoor air quality. The combined VI model predicts AER …

Working Sex Words, Anita Bernstein
Michigan Journal of Gender & Law
Imagine yourself tasked to speak for a few minutes about legal controls on sex-selling in the United States, or any other country you choose. You need not have thought about the particulars. As someone willing to read a law review article, you have enough to say because sex-selling overlaps with the subject knowledge you already have. Criminal law, contracts, employment law, immigration law, tort law, zoning, commercial law, and intellectual property, among other legal categories, all intersect with this topic. In your brief remarks on how law attempts to mediate the sale and purchase of sex, you have only one …

Solid state hybrid organometal halide perovskite solar cells have become the research hotspots recently. We prepared perovskite solar cells by the simple two-step method in the ambient condition. The solar cell samples were kept in air and vacuum environments, respectively. Jsc shows good stability in vacuum for up to 27 days, while it drops a lot in air. There is a remarkable promotion of FF for the air-stored samples compared that of the vacuum-stored samples. Changes in Voc of vacuum-stored and airstored samples exhibited a similar behavior, both showing a slight increase. We believe the moisture in air …
Video Frame Interpolation Via Adaptive Separable Convolution, Simon Niklaus, Long Mai, Feng Liu
Video Frame Interpolation Via Adaptive Separable Convolution, Simon Niklaus, Long Mai, Feng Liu
Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Standard video frame interpolation methods first estimate optical flow between input frames and then synthesize an intermediate frame guided by motion. Recent approaches merge these two steps into a single convolution process by convolving input frames with spatially adaptive kernels that account for motion and re-sampling simultaneously. These methods require large kernels to handle large motion, which limits the number of pixels whose kernels can be estimated at once due to the large memory demand. To address this problem, this paper formulates frame interpolation as local separable convolution over input frames using pairs of 1D kernels. Compared to regular 2D …

American Missionaries And The Formalization Of Modern Bulgarian National Consciousness, Christopher L. Miller
American Missionaries And The Formalization Of Modern Bulgarian National Consciousness, Christopher L. Miller
History Faculty Publications
Following Ernest Gellner, this paper asserts that national consciousness is a modern phenomenon which arose in response to certain structural preconditions that came together differently in different national contexts. Furthermore, it suggests that this crystallization process is complex, involving the attainment of a tipping point at which time discrete semi-dormant processes merge into a dominant movement. It argues that in Bulgaria, one of the most influential factors in establishing these preconditions and the final tipping point was the publishing and educational work done throughout the nineteenth century by American Protestant missionaries. Six factors are identified as significant in this process: …

In Court Reform on Trial: Why Simple Solutions Fail, Malcolm Feeley identified a number of obstacles that undermine reforms of the United States court system. Feeley’s proposed solution was to adopt a problem-oriented “rights strategy”—letting the courts themselves solve their problems through litigation. This is because litigation is a forum in which courts are well placed to identify specific problems and devise pragmatic solutions. This Article takes a look at this proposition in the context of court reforms in China and concludes that courts (and law) are also a reflection of national goals and identity. Any reforms to a …
