Companion Planting: Effects Of Radishes On Squash Bugs, Daniel Dejong
Companion Planting: Effects Of Radishes On Squash Bugs, Daniel Dejong
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
Throughout history, humans have continuously looked for easier and improved ways of growing our food. Over centuries of hybridizing crop varieties and more recently the invention and implementation of genetically modified (GM) seeds, we have created a food system that is dependent on chemical and seed companies to provide protection from environmental pests. The purpose of this thesis is not to discredit or dissuade someone from using GM seeds, but to take a look at some methods that could protect crops from environmental pests naturally, either for organic farmers or home gardeners. Specifically this review will examine methods of controlling …

Integrating Norm Activation Model And Theory Of Planned Behavior To Understand Sustainable Transport Behavior: Evidence From China., Yuwei Liu, Hong Sheng, Norbert Mundorf, Colleen Redding, Yinjiao Ye
Communication Studies Faculty Publications
With increasing urbanization in China, many cities are facing serious environmental problems due to continuous and substantial increase in automobile transportation. It is becoming imperative to examine effective ways to reduce individual automobile use to facilitate sustainable transportation behavior. Empirical, theory-based research on sustainable transportation in China is limited. In this research, we propose an integrated model based on the norm activation model and the theory of planned behavior by combining normative and rational factors to predict individuals’ intention to reduce car use. Data from a survey of 600 car drivers in China’s three metropolitan areas was used to test …

An Assessment Of Frontal Lobe Activity And Bdnf Levels Following Concussion In Collegiate Athletes: A Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Study, Keara Kangas
All NMU Master's Theses
Impacts to the head that are associated with sports related injuries, can result in a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), known as a concussion. Previous research has assessed how mTBIs affect the brain, but these assessments are limited in their ability to directly measure the consequences of mTBI. Along with concussion assessments, only a few studies have used neuroimaging techniques to evaluate brain injury. This study utilized a neuroimaging technique that is inexpensive, non-invasive, and portable, to measure brain activity post-concussion. In particular, near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to measure prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity during the dot-probe task of affective …
Modern Interpretation Of Ornamentation In Naftule Brandwein’S Firn Di Mekhutonim Aheym And Der Heyser Bulgar, Michael Aaron Gersten
Modern Interpretation Of Ornamentation In Naftule Brandwein’S Firn Di Mekhutonim Aheym And Der Heyser Bulgar, Michael Aaron Gersten
Dissertations
Research on the klezmer revival is wanting both in size and scope. Much of the existing research focuses on extra-musical influences on modern klezmer music with only tangential study of performance practice. This study seeks to inform the body of literature on klezmer performance practice by analyzing and comparing the interpretation of melody and ornamentation in modern performances of Der Heyser Bulgar and Firn di Mekhutonim Aheym, two of famed clarinetist Naftule Brandwein’s (1884–1963) most popular tunes. Analysis of ornamentation in modern performances of the selected recordings reveals a marked shift in modern style when compared to Brandwein’s original recordings. …
Interindividual Neuromuscular Characteristics And Their Relationships To Running Economy, Barbara Jean Schornstein
Interindividual Neuromuscular Characteristics And Their Relationships To Running Economy, Barbara Jean Schornstein
Dissertations
Running economy (RE) has previously been shown to be associated with endurance running performance. Neuromuscular characteristics, such as the activity of lower-extremity biarticular muscles during stance, have shown both positive and negative relationships with RE. That is, a positive relationship would indicate as there is more muscular excitation, more oxygen would be used for running, leading to a performance detriment. These conflicting relationships with neuromuscular activity have used two separate electromyographic (EMG) analyses, as there is no gold standard for the processing of EMG data. The first study was performed in order to compare the EMG analysis methods of each …

(Dis)Integrated Identities: Experiences Of Tenure- Track Engineering Faculty Who Identify As Sexual Minorities, Robyn Elisa Sandekian
Dissertations
This study was conducted to explore how full-time, tenure-track engineering faculty members who self-identify as sexual minorities have experienced working in Doctoral Universities. Literature reviewed for this study included the history of higher education and engineering education in the United States; a review of the differences between engineering and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields; and an overview of the history of discrimination against sexual minorities. Using a mixed-methods explanatory sequential methodology, the study included an anonymous web-based survey followed by semi-structured interviews of the participants who agreed to be contacted. During the interviews, participants shared photographs of their …

Improving Discharge Planning Using The Re-Engineered Discharge (Red) Program, Sterling L. Roberts, Leslie C. Moore, Brian Jack
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
The 12-actionable items of the Re-Engineered Discharge Program (RED) are equipped to address essential areas to prevent hospital re-visits. Evidence supports the use of nurses to complete these essential components of hospital interventions. The aims of this project were to: 1) assess nurses’ readiness to learn prior to receiving education on the RED Program, and 2) measure the utilization of the RED discharge process from patient chart reviews following an educational intervention focused on the RED 12-actionable items. Participants (N = 69) scored high M = 219.8 (SD 23.7) on the Self-Directed Learning Readiness – Adult Scale, indicating the nurses …

Do It Today Or Do It Tomorrow: Empirical Non-Exponential Discounting Explained By Symmetry And Fuzzy Ideas, Francisco Zapata, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Thongchai Dumrongpokaphan
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
At first glance, it seems to make sense to conclude that when a 1 dollar reward tomorrow is equivalent to a D < 1 dollar reward today, the day-after-tomorrow's 1 dollar reward would be equivalent to D * D = D2 dollars today, and, in general, a reward after time t is equivalent to D(t) = Dt dollars today. This exponential discounting function D(t) was indeed proposed by the economists, but it does not reflect the actual human behavior. Indeed, according to this formula, the effect of distant future events is negligible, and thus, it would be reasonable for a person to take on huge loans or get engaged in unhealthy behavior even when the long-term consequences …

Z-Numbers: How They Describe Student Confidence And How They Can Explain (And Improve) Laplacian And Schroedinger Eigenmap Dimension Reduction In Data Analysis, Vladik Kreinovich, Olga Kosheleva, Michael Zakharevich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Experts have different degrees of confidence in their statements. To describe these different degrees of confidence, Lotfi A. Zadeh proposed the notion of a Z-number: a fuzzy set (or other type of uncertainty) supplemented by a degree of confidence in the statement corresponding to fuzzy sets. In this chapter, we show that Z-numbers provide a natural formalization of the competence-vs-confidence dichotomy, which is especially important for educating low-income students. We also show that Z-numbers provide a natural theoretical explanation for several empirically heuristic techniques of dimension reduction in data analysis, such as Laplacian and Schroedinger eigenmaps, and, moreover, show how …

How To Best Apply Neural Networks In Geosciences: Towards Optimal "Averaging" In Dropout Training, Afshin Gholamy, Justin Parra, Vladik Kreinovich, Olac Fuentes, Elizabeth Y. Anthony
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The main objectives of geosciences is to find the current state of the Earth -- i.e., solve the corresponding inverse problems -- and to use this knowledge for predicting the future events, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In both inverse and prediction problems, often, machine learning techniques are very efficient, and at present, the most efficient machine learning technique is deep neural training. To speed up this training, the current learning algorithms use dropout techniques: they train several sub-networks on different portions of data, and then "average" the results. A natural idea is to use arithmetic mean for this …

The Plains CO2 Reduction (PCOR) Partnership Atlas provides a regional profile of CO2 sources and potential CO2 storage locations across the PCOR Partnership region. The revised fifth edition provides an up-to-date look at PCOR Partnership activities, including additional regional characterization and updates on full-scale demonstration projects. Additional background information on carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is included to give a better understanding of how CCUS addresses concerns about climate change while allowing future energy needs to be met.
Why Deep Learning Methods Use Kl Divergence Instead Of Least Squares: A Possible Pedagogical Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Why Deep Learning Methods Use Kl Divergence Instead Of Least Squares: A Possible Pedagogical Explanation, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In most applications of data processing, we select the parameters that minimize the mean square approximation error. The same Least Squares approach has been used in the traditional neural networks. However, for deep learning, it turns out that an alternative idea works better -- namely, minimizing the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence. The use of KL divergence is justified if we predict probabilities, but the use of this divergence has been successful in other situations as well. In this paper, we provide a possible explanation for this empirical success. Namely, the Least Square approach is optimal when the approximation error is normally …

Background: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used to noninvasively measure specific tissue oxygen saturation (StO2) continuously. Cerebral autoregulation status can be derived from NIRS and arterial blood pressure. The relationship of both cerebral and somatic StO2, fractional tissue oxygen extraction (FTOE), and cerebro-splanchnic oxygenation ratio (CSOR) to measured vital signs parameters for NICU patients has not been well studied.
Objective: Determine if significant relationships between brain and somatic StO2, brain and somatic FTOE, and CSOR parameters to vital signs for neonates exist. Assess relationship between pressure passivity index, cerebral autoregulation and mean blood pressure (MBP).
Design/Methods: Neonates weighing <5 >kg, preferentially …5>
