A Humidity-Controlled Fast Integrated Mobility Spectrometer (Hfims) For Rapid Measurements Of Particle Hygroscopic Growth, Tamara Pinterich, Steven R. Spielman, Yang Wang, Susanne V. Hering, Jian Wang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
We present a humidity-controlled fast integrated mobility spectrometer (HFIMS) for rapid particle hygroscopicity measurements. The HFIMS consists of a differential mobility analyzer (DMA), a relative humidity (RH) control unit and a water-based FIMS (WFIMS) coupled in series. The WFIMS (Pinterich et al., 2017) combines the fast integrated mobility spectrometer (Kulkarni and Wang, 2006a, b) with laminar flow water condensation methodologies (Hering and Stolzenburg, 2005; Spielman et al., 2017). Inside the WFIMS, particles of different electrical mobilities are spatially separated in an electric field, condensationally enlarged and imaged to provide 1 Hz measurements of size distribution spanning a factor of ∼3 …

Developing Effective Online Training Tools For Maine Adaptive Sports And Recreation, Chelsea Paul, Emily Gall, Kristina Jamo, Shannon Bergeland
Research Report Posters
Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation (MASR) is an adaptive sporting program that relies on volunteers to instruct participants of varying abilities. In order to effectively instruct, volunteers should firmly understand the health condition their participant has. Previously, MASR lacked a formal curriculum to educate their volunteers. The aim of this research project was to create online learning modules & determine whether a massed or distributed learning schedule resulted in better long term retention and confidence. MASR volunteers were placed into two non-randomized groups of eleven. Six video training modules were created to educate volunteers on the most common conditions encountered. …

Key Performance Indicators Of Part-Time Employees Teaching Online, Mark L. Alexander
Key Performance Indicators Of Part-Time Employees Teaching Online, Mark L. Alexander
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Online learning has caused a seismic shift in higher education since its rise beginning at the turn of the century. A portion of that impact has been on the ascent of the part-time employee teaching online. Adjunct instructors account for the overwhelming majority of the faculty providing education to these online learners. Because an instructor’s performance impacts students’ learning and their resulting end of course evaluation has such a bearing upon that person’s employment, it is imperative to identify key performance indicators (KPIs) of employees teaching online. The problem addressed by this study was to determine the factors that affected …

Meeting Real-Time Constraint Of Spectrum Management In Tv Black-Space Access, Zhongyuan Zhao
Meeting Real-Time Constraint Of Spectrum Management In Tv Black-Space Access, Zhongyuan Zhao
School of Computing: Technical Reports
The TV set feedback feature standardized in the next generation TV system, ATSC 3.0, would enable opportunistic access of active TV channels in future Cognitive Radio Networks. This new dynamic spectrum access approach is named as black-space access, as it is complementary of current TV white space, which stands for inactive TV channels. TV black-space access can significantly increase the available spectrum of Cognitive Radio Networks in populated urban markets, where spectrum shortage is most severe while TV whitespace is very limited. However, to enable TV black-space access, secondary user has to evacuate a TV channel in a timely manner …

Existing research on the characteristics of digital natives, traditionally defined as those born after 1980, has shown subtle differences in how they approach technology compared with other cohorts. However, much of the existing research has focused on a limited set of conventional technologies, mostly related to learning. In addition, prior research has shown differences within this cohort in how they respond to autonomous technology (e.g., trust, reliance; Pak, Rovira, McLaughlin, & Baldwin, 2016Pak, R., Rovira, E., McLaughlin, A., & Baldwin, N.(2016). Does the domain of technology impact user trust? Investigating trust in automation across different consumer-oriented domains in young …

Design Of A Small, Affordable Low Intensity Focused Ultrasound Device For Vagus Nerve Stimulation, Kelsey C. Bayer
Open Access Theses
Depression is a serious public health issue that affects more than 300 million people worldwide. While there are antidepressant drugs to alleviate depressive symptoms, 10 – 30% of patients either do not respond or develop a tolerance to these drugs. Researchers have found a correlation between the inflammatory response and treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Blocking this inflammatory pathway with electrical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can reduce cytokine levels and depressive symptoms. However, placing an electrical VNS device is invasive, costly, and poses a risk to the vagus nerve. Low intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) is a novel therapy that is able to …
An Investigation Of The Spray Characteristics Of Standard And Alternative Fuel Sprays From A Hybrid Airblast Pressure-Swirl Atomizer Operating At Lean Blowout And Chilled Conditions Using Phase Doppler Anemometry, Andrew J. Bokhart
Open Access Theses
Alternative fuel is an area of combustion research gaining increased attention within the aviation industry. These fuels can provide many benefits over standard aviation fuels such as lower prices, supply diversity, and improved emissions. The current focus of alternative fuel research is on producing fuels similar to aviation standards, so that they can be implemented in existing infrastructure and gas turbine engines without significant modification to those systems. These fuels are known as ”drop–in” fuels, and undergo an extensive, costly certification process outlined in ASTM D4054–14 in order to be considered suitable for commercial use.
The National Jet Fuels Combustion …
Multi-Scale Modeling Of Dynamic Recrystallization In Metals Undergoing Thermo-Mechanical Processing, Pooja Nitin Shah
Multi-Scale Modeling Of Dynamic Recrystallization In Metals Undergoing Thermo-Mechanical Processing, Pooja Nitin Shah
Open Access Theses
This study focuses on devising a unified multi-scale numerical framework to predict the grain size evolution by dynamic recrystallization in metals and alloys for an array of severe plastic thermo-mechanical deformation conditions. The model is developed to predict the temporal and spatial grain size evolution of the material subjected to high strain rate and temperature dependent deformation.
Dynamic recrystallization evolves by either a continuous grain refinement mechanism around room temperatures or by a discontinuous grain nucleation and growth mechanism at elevated temperatures. The multi-scale model bridges a dislocation density-based constitutive framework with microscale physics-based recrystallization laws to predict both the …

A Study Of Spatial Ability And 3d Modeling Capabilities, Jesse Edward Zahner
Open Access Theses
The nature of design is that it is always changing, new methods develop that are better or we learn how we are adapting to new challenges. In accordance with this, the study shown in this paper introduces a class of students at Purdue University to the Mental CuttingTest to judge their spatial ability. The students, then tasked with building three models from isometric views, timed themselves while completing the modeling task and provided their finished models back. The models were interrogated to attempt to find a link between spatial abilitylevels, time taken to do the task, steps taken to complete …

Most nuclear-encoded mitochondrial proteins traffic from the cytosol to mitochondria. Some of these proteins localize at mitochondria-associated membranes (MAM), where mitochondria are closely apposed with the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). We have previously shown that the human cytomegalovirus signal-anchored protein known as viral mitochondria-localized inhibitor of apoptosis (vMIA) traffics from the ER to mitochondria and clusters at the outer mitochondrial membrane (OMM). Here, we have examined the host pathways by which vMIA traffics from the ER to mitochondria and clusters at the OMM. By disruption of phosphofurin acidic cluster sorting protein 2 (PACS-2), mitofusins (Mfn1/2), and dynamin related protein 1 (Drp1), …

An X-linked condition characterized by the combination of hypomyelinating leukodystrophy and spondylometaphyseal dysplasia (H-SMD) has been observed in only four families, with linkage to Xq25-27, and recent genetic characterization in two families with a common AIFM1 mutation. In our study, 12 patients (6 families) with H-SMD were identified and underwent comprehensive assessment accompanied by whole-exome sequencing (WES). Pedigree analysis in all families was consistent with X-linked recessive inheritance. Presentation typically occurred between 12 and 36 months. In addition to the two disease-defining features of spondylometaphyseal dysplasia and hypomyelination on MRI, common clinical signs and symptoms included motor deterioration, spasticity, tremor, …

Fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21) levels are elevated in patients with primary mitochondrial disorders but have not been studied in patients with inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) known to have secondary mitochondrial dysfunction. We measured plasma FGF21 by ELISA in patients with and without IEM. FGF21 levels were higher in patients with IEM compared to without IEM (370 pg/dL vs. 0–65 pg/dL). Further study of FGF21 as a biomarker in IEM is warranted.

Global Kidney Exchange (GKE) is a program aimed at facilitating trans-national kidney donation. Although its proponents aim at reducing the unmet demand of kidneys in the United States through the trans-nationalization of kidney exchange programs, the World Health Organization (WHO) and The Transplantation Society (TTS) have expressed concerns about its potential effect on black markets of organs and transnational organ trafficking, as well as on low- or middle-income countries health systems. For GKE to be implemented, it would need to be permitted to operate in at least some low- or middle-income countries. Should a low- or middle-income country allow GKE’s …

Using photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) we present a comparative analysis of the wavelength dependence of propagating fields in a simple optical slab waveguide and a thin film photonic crystal W1-type waveguide. We utilize an interferometric imaging approach for light in the near-ultraviolet regime where a 2-photon process is required to produce photoelectron emission. The typical spatial resolution in these experiments is < 30 nm. Electromagnetic theory and finite element simulations are shown to be in good agreement with the experimental observations. Our results indicate that multiphoton PEEM is a useful sub-wavelength characterization technique in thin film optics.
Nebraska Snaps Back, Eric Thompson
Nebraska Snaps Back, Eric Thompson
Business in Nebraska
Nebraska will fully participate in stronger U.S. economic growth. While the farming sector will continue to face challenges, farm income will rise slightly during the forecast period, and consequently, will no longer detract from Nebraska economic growth. Nebraska will match U.S. job growth, with job growth particularly strong in services, construction, and retail trade. The agricultural processing sector also will expand employment. Projected growth rates for 2018 through 2020 are presented in Table 1.
Employment will grow by 1.1% to 1.2% per year, matching the national job growth rate in 2019 and 2020. Non-farm income will grow between 3.9% and …
