Professional Development For Educators To Promote Literacy Development Of English Learners: Valuing Home Connections, Leslie Grant, Angela B. Bell, Monica Yoo, Christina Jimenez, Barbara Frye
Professional Development For Educators To Promote Literacy Development Of English Learners: Valuing Home Connections, Leslie Grant, Angela B. Bell, Monica Yoo, Christina Jimenez, Barbara Frye
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
While families play a vital role in the early literacy skills of young English Learners, their educators often do not share the same backgrounds or cultures, and may not know how to connect with parents who are linguistically and culturally different. As part of a year-long grant funded professional development project, the authors led teams of educators from two districts through a series of workshops which included ways teachers could increase home-school connections to support the children’s literacy. Data from participant surveys with Likert-scale and open-ended questions provided evidence that the professional development experiences resulted in an increase in the …
Factors Influencing Recruitment Into The U.S. Armed Services: Could Health Insurance Be A Motivator?, Michael P. Hughes
Factors Influencing Recruitment Into The U.S. Armed Services: Could Health Insurance Be A Motivator?, Michael P. Hughes
Public Administration Master’s Projects
Caring for our nation's veterans is a responsibility of the federal promise that began with a promise by Abraham Lincoln on the event of his second inauguration. The 2017 National Defense Authorization Act requires the Army to recruit an additional 16,000 enlisted personnel and retain an additional 9,000 soldiers by the end of September 2017, with the Army offering enlistment bonuses of up to $40,000 and upwards of $10,000 for soldiers willing to extend their contracts for one year (Myers, 2017). A RAND Corporation study identified several risk factors for Army recruitment should the need arise to commit forces including …
No. 12: Compounding Vulnerability: A Model Of Urban Household Food Security, Cameron Mccordic
No. 12: Compounding Vulnerability: A Model Of Urban Household Food Security, Cameron Mccordic
Hungry Cities Partnership
The efficiency of the infrastructure systems in cities will define the extent to which dystopic visions of urban futures become a reality. At the level of the individual household, vulnerability to hazards in cities is defined, in part, by the ability to access essential resources and services. This discussion paper proposes a model to help explain the relationship between access to urban infrastructure systems and household vulnerability to food insecurity. Food access in cities is primarily achieved through food purchases, where households convert assets into food at retail locations. When a household falls into food insecurity through trading household assets …

Genetically Engineered Animals, Drugs, And Neoliberalism: The Need For A New Biotechnology Regulatory Policy Framework, Zahra Meghani
Genetically Engineered Animals, Drugs, And Neoliberalism: The Need For A New Biotechnology Regulatory Policy Framework, Zahra Meghani
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Genetically engineered (GE) animals that are meant for release in the wild could significantly impact ecosystems given the interwoven or entangled existence of species. Therefore, among other things, it is all too important that regulatory agencies conduct entity appropriate, rigorous risk assessments that can be used for informed decision-making at the local, national and global levels about the release of those animals in the wild. In the United States (US), certain GE animals that are intended for release in the wild may be regulated as new animal drugs by the Food and Drug Administration. This paper argues that the decision …
Shockwave Interaction With A Cylindrical Structure, Phillip R. Mulligan
Shockwave Interaction With A Cylindrical Structure, Phillip R. Mulligan
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
An increased understanding of the shockwave interaction with a cylindrical structure is the foundation for developing a method to explosively seal a pipe similar to the Deepwater Horizon accident in the Gulf of Mexico. Shockwave interactions with a cylindrical structure have been a reoccurring focus of energetics research. Some of the most notable contributions of non-destructive tests are described in ``The Effects of Nuclear Weapons'' (Glasstone, 1962). The work presented by Glasstone examines shockwave interaction from a 20-megaton bomb with a cylindrical structure. However, the data is limited to a peak overpressure of less than 25 psi, requiring several miles …
A Real-Time Solution Strategy For Estimation Of Aerothermal Heating For Reentry Vehicles, Bhuvaneswari Rajendra
A Real-Time Solution Strategy For Estimation Of Aerothermal Heating For Reentry Vehicles, Bhuvaneswari Rajendra
Theses and Dissertations
Direct measurement of flight environment on a heat shield of a Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) is critical due to the extremely aerothermal heating experiences during the reentry phase. An alternative approach is to install thermocouple several millimeters below the heat shield surface to measure the heat shield temperature response and solve the associated inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP) in order to reconstruct the surface heat flux using the measured temperature response. The material properties and thicknesses of the Thermal protection system (TPS) make the reconstruction process more challenging when the thermocouples are placed far away from the surface. The focus …
Increasing Provider Awareness Of Patient Health Literacy Needs For Dental Screenings Among Patients With Diabetes In A Rural Health Clinic, Diana M. Solis
Increasing Provider Awareness Of Patient Health Literacy Needs For Dental Screenings Among Patients With Diabetes In A Rural Health Clinic, Diana M. Solis
Doctor of Nursing Practice
The purpose of this project was to increase provider awareness of health literacy needs for recommended dental screenings among patients with diabetes in a rural clinic setting. Over 35% of adults in the United States are considered to have low literacy levels (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2015). Low health literacy levels have an impact on patient outcomes due to decrease compliance with recommended treatment plans and preventive health screenings. Patients with diabetes have a trifold increase of developing oral infections such as periodontal disease, fungal infections, and xerostomia (Kudiyirickal & Pappachan, 2015). Healthcare providers acknowledging a patient’s health …

Canines For Disabled Kids, Erin Jerrett, Margarita Mnatsakanyan, Colleen Reynolds, Yin Wang
School of Professional Studies
Canines for Disabled Kids have been working on behalf of children and their families to educate communities and promote service dog partnerships for almost twenty years. Their advocacy with local legislatures, business owners, and community leaders highlighted the difficulties encountered when differentiating service dogs from emotional support/comfort dogs. Service dogs are entitled to access by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), while emotional support/comfort dogs are not protected under the federal statute or to the same rights. Canines for Disabled Kids proposed a study to obtain a current count of licensed service dogs in the Commonwealth and investigate the feasibility …

Comparison Of Apical Centring Ability Between Incisal-Shifted Access And Traditional Lingual Access For Maxillary Anterior Teeth, Yoshio Yahata, Yoshiko Masuda, Takashi Komabayashi
Dental Medicine Faculty Publications
The aim of this study was to compare the apical centring ability of incisal-shifted access (ISA) with that of traditional lingual access (TLA). Fifteen three-dimensional printed resin models were prepared from the computed tomography data for a human maxillary central incisor and divided into ISA (n=7), TLA (n=7), and control (n=1) groups. After access preparation, these models were shaped to the working length using K-files up to #40, followed by step-back procedures. An apical portion of the model was removed at 0.5 mm coronal to the working length. Microscopic images of each cutting surface were taken to measure the preparation …
Balance & Fall Prevention Rehabilitation Program For A 77-Year-Old Patient Following A Trimalleolar Fracture: A Case Report, Kathryn Judd
Balance & Fall Prevention Rehabilitation Program For A 77-Year-Old Patient Following A Trimalleolar Fracture: A Case Report, Kathryn Judd
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Ankle fractures are one of the most common injuries amongst the elderly, with an incidence rate of approximately 174 cases per 100,000 persons per year. Balance training has been a typical component of a physical therapy (PT) program following ankle fractures. Fall prevention programs have been shown to decrease fall risk by 13% to 40%. There is limited research investigating a combined balance training and fall prevention program after an ankle fracture. Therefore, the purpose of this case report was to describe a PT program combining balance training and fall prevention strategies for an elderly patient after …
Outpatient Physical Therapy Management Of A Total Knee Arthroplasty With Severe Contralateral Knee Osteoarthritis: A Case Report, Michael Ikemura
Outpatient Physical Therapy Management Of A Total Knee Arthroplasty With Severe Contralateral Knee Osteoarthritis: A Case Report, Michael Ikemura
Case Report Papers
Background and Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a common cause of severe pain, disability within the community, and dependence on others. If conservative treatments fail, orthopedic surgeons often perform a total knee arthroplasty (TKA), in which damaged articular parts of the knee are resurfaced with prosthetics. To maximize physical function, the underlying cause of gait speed limitation must be determined and treated. The purpose of this case report was to examine the impairments following a TKA with concurrent severe OA of the contralateral knee, develop an effective plan of care, describe physical therapy (PT) interventions, and report the …
Physical And Psychological Outcome Measures After Multiple Foot Surgeries: A Case Report, Elizabeth Inscore, Kirsten Buchanan
Physical And Psychological Outcome Measures After Multiple Foot Surgeries: A Case Report, Elizabeth Inscore, Kirsten Buchanan
Case Report Posters
The psychological effects of an injury have the potential to be more debilitating than the physical ailments themselves. Physical therapy (PT) rehabilitation programs that incorporate both physical and psychological interventions have demonstrated successful outcomes but have not been widely studied. The purpose of this case report was to investigate both the physical and psychological outcomes after a comprehensive PT rehabilitation program for a patient who sustained multiple foot and ankle injuries.
The Role Of Physical Therapy Interventions For An Elderly Patient Following Surgical Fixation Of A Fracture Of The Femoral Shaft: A Case Report, Ashley Push
Case Report Posters
In the U.S. approximately half of elderly white females will sustain an osteoporotic hip fracture. One year following surgery most elderly adults have not returned to their prior level of function. Evidence demonstrates the benefits of early weight bearing and mobility post-surgery to improve functional abilities. The purpose of this case report was to document this patient’s response to skilled physical therapy intervention in the inpatient setting, including functional mobility, gait training and therapeutic exercise to maximize the patient's functional ability prior to discharge home.

Strength And Balance Training For A 29-Year-Old Female Who Sustained A Multifocal Stroke: A Case Report, Britney Simonton, Kirsten Buchanan
Case Report Posters
Stroke is defined as a decrease in blood supply to the brain, and most often occurs in older adults. In the United States, approximately 795,000 people sustain a stroke annually. Risk factors for a stroke include high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and high cholesterol. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Although research has shown that a balance and strength training program is beneficial for older adults who have sustained a stroke, there is limited research showing if these benefits also hold true for younger patients who have had a stroke. The purpose of this case …

Baby Bay And The Big, Loud Ocean, Kelcey Salois, Dominique Mellone
Environmental Studies Student Projects
This is a children's book that depicts some of the serious effects of noise pollution on marine organisms, especially larger mammals such as Baleen Whales. Through this little story about a baby whale and his mom, trying to find the rest of their pod amidst an ocean filled with noise pollution, we hope to spread awareness about this problem and provide hope to younger generations that if we work hard enough at protecting our oceans, we can provide a much nicer and safer life for the creatures that live within it.

Music As A Bridge And Platform For Personal, Cultural, And Societal Change: The Work Of Billie Holiday, Adrienne Auer
Senior Theses
Billie Holiday came into this life faced with many hardships and struggles. She was raised with harsh realities and hard choices inherent in an inequitable culture that allowed discrimination, segregation, disenfranchisement, and continued acts of oppression and brutality. Her life story, her musicality, her songwriting, her autobiography Lady Sings the Blues, and the feeling that she put into almost everything she touched created a lasting legacy. This essay examines how Billie Holiday was able to channel her emotionality and her life experiences into her art. It draws from Billie Holiday’s autobiography and her songs, from the work of noted …

Passage, Unité Nationale Et Écriture Du Mythe Dans Falagountou De Yamba Élie Ouédraogo, Alain Joseph Sissao
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The metaphor of national unity through the passages of the eponymous hero Falagountou Yamba Elie Ouédraogo: myth of unity or unity of the myth? Yamba Elie Ouédraogo brushed a gargantuan romantic mural in her latest novel Falagountou. Falagountou appears in many ways like a quest for the Grail of identities to form identity. These passages of the hero mythical half-man, half-Hercules – like the epic of Gilgamesh – crosses different regions of Burkina Faso who report a culmination of the intermediate time, in-between, to apprehend modalities that govern the construction of crises, utopias, individual projections. In this, the novelist is …
