The paper examines how Leonid Tsypkin’s novel Summer in Baden-Baden utilises the apparatus of symbolist ornamental prose, one of the characteristic features of Russian Modernism, while it applies postmodern devices to construct the myth of Dostoyevsky as a gambler. The plot of Tsypkin’s novel, which relies on primary sources, especially Anna Dostoyevskaya’s diary, highlights the feeling of humiliation as a central component of the personality of Dostoyevsky as a character. At the same time, on the ornamental level of the text, repetitive motifs and equivalences are applied with the aim of placing emphasis on transcending the humiliation, which can be …

The article reviews the role of obscene vocabulary in Sergei Yesenin’s cycle Moscow Taverns, as well as the problems connected with rendering them into Polish. The material ofthe analysis, Yeseninʼs poetry, is famous for a high frequency of terms of abuse. The resultsof the examination make it possible to pinpoint certain regularities in translation transformations.The potential translation variants are shown on basis of three Polish translators’works, pertaining to different periods. Due to this, it is possible to observe the evolving attitudesto translating obscene images in Yesenin’s poetry in a diachronic perspective.

In the following article the author’s aim is to analyze how originals and translations influence the reader’s imagination. In fact, an average reader’s imaginative potential cannot be verified by any means available to a linguist. However, imagination is affected by images created by linguistic units embedded in a text. The article brings an attempt at identifying those elements of the original and translation that have the potential to activate colours and tints in a child’s imagination. The paper discusses employing a highly intertextualized text in translator training. Using an example of a humorous story in Russian, the author describes the advantages of the classroom use of such a text. They encompass: facilitating an understanding of the scope of the phenomenon and thus learning to successfully render diverse intertextual signals in varied circumstances, as well as the possibility to formulate and apply a holistic strategy with respect to intertexts. The benefit of enhancing the students’ background knowledge is also emphasized in the context of current curricula.

Translation Of Adapted Russian Folk Tales – A Classroom Experiment, Ełona Curkan-Dróżka

The article presents the results of an experiment conducted on two groups of students engaged in translating into Polish selected Russian folk tales (already adapted into standard literary Russian and equipped with explanations). The author considers the types and extent of translation transformations, as well as the consequences of applying two different strategies – domestication and foreignization.

This study adds to the empirical evidence of information and communication technology (ICT) use by smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study draws on qualitative data collected from eight focus groups segmented by gender and consisting of adult farmers in two villages in central Mozambique. Special attention was given to the types of ICTs that farmers have access to and the dissemination of agriculture information through various ICTs. Findings indicate that the characteristics of ICTs explain why cell phone and radio use is prevalent, while access to television remains limited. Despite the impact of “new agriculture,” a revival of farmers’ markets (FMs) occurred in recent years. Though urban environments have FMs, people often neglect to consider their existence and functions in rural areas. Moreover, a lack of research specifically related to rural, online markets exists. This article is an analysis of rural, online farmers’ market sellers in the Arkansas River Valley. It provides a brief history of FMs and review of literature associated with food, identity, and community. Livestock are an important component of rural households and gendered livelihood practices throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Widespread within the development literature is the belief in the livestock ladder, with poorer households often owning small stock and wealthier households owning large stock, with the assumption that poor households can utilize livestock to build their asset base and over time this would allow poorer households to expand from small stock to large stock, and in so doing climb the livestock ladder. The globalization of a country is today measured with respect to indices of globalization such as the Maastricht Globalization Index (MGI) and the Konjunkturforschungsstelle (KOF). These indices of national globalization often have an urban bias. This study however explores the extent to which these international measures include rural environments of the globalizing country. Application of the MGI/KOF indices for determination of the Nigerian rural environment inclusion in globalization showed that the country’s rural communities were mainly integrated technologically by virtue of telephony (communication technology) penetration of rural areas. Access to a range of services, including health care, ranks among the key determinants of health and wellbeing. It varies with both health system supply factors and consumer demand characteristics. For rural populations, access to health services can be restricted for a variety of reasons, contributing to poorer health outcomes compared with metropolitan populations. Access to health care differs between communities, despite commonly being seen as homogenous in terms of lack of service and poor access. While the negative relationship between materialism and marital satisfaction is well documented, mediators that possibly explain this association have not been widely explored. Based on the Incompatibility of Materialism and Children Model and Marital Paradigms Theory, this article explores the perception of marriage importance as a potential mediator between materialism and marital satisfaction. Using a sample of 1310 married individuals, we found evidence of partial mediation in that materialism was negatively associated with perception of marriage importance, and this association partially explained why being materialistic was associated with lower marital satisfaction. Reactions on certain proton-rich, radioactive nuclei have been shown to have a significant influence on X-ray bursts. We provide an overview of two recent measurements of important X-ray burst reactions using in-flight radioactive ion beams from the RESOLUT facility at the J. D. Fox Superconducting Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University. The 17F(d,n)18Ne reaction was measured, and Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients were extracted for bound states in 18Ne that determine the direct-capture cross section dominating the 17F(p,γ)18Ne reaction rate for T ≲ 0.45 GK. Unbound resonant states were also studied, and the single-particle strength for the 4.523-MeV (3+) state was found …

When a neutron star accretes hydrogen and helium from the outer layers of its companion star, thermonuclear burning enables the αp-process as a break out mechanism from the hot CNO cycle. Model calculations predict (α, p) reaction rates significantly affect both the light curves and elemental abundances in the burst ashes. The Jet Experiments in Nuclear Structure and Astrophysics (JENSA) gas jet target enables the direct measurement of previously inaccessible (α,p) reactions with radioactive beams provided by the rare isotope re-accelerator ReA3 at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL), USA. The 12C+12C fusion reaction is one of the most important for nuclear astrophysics since it determines the carbon ignition in stellar environments. Two experiments which make use of the gamma-particle coincidence technique to measure the 12C+12C S-factors at deep sub barrier energies are discussed. Results are presented showing a decrease of the S-factor below Ec.m. = 3 MeV.
