The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Over the course of this year, we’ll be interviewing some of the speakers from the upcoming 2018 CWI conference about their talks. Today we are speaking with William Marvel, an independent scholar of mid-19th-century American History. Marvel is the author of eighteen books, including most recently, Lincoln’s Mercenaries: Economic Motivation among Union Soldiers, which is due for release by LSU Press in the early fall of 2018. Some of Marvel’s additional publications include: Lincoln’s Autocrat: The Life of Edwin Stanton (UNC Press, 2015), A Place Called Appomattox (UNC Press, 2000), and Andersonville: The Last Depot (UNC Press, 1994), for which …

On Subgraphs Of 2K-Cycle-Free Graphs, Abhishek Methuku Dec 2017

On Subgraphs Of 2K-Cycle-Free Graphs, Abhishek Methuku

Colloquia of the Department of Mathematical Sciences

Kühn and Osthus showed that every bipartite 2k-cycle-free graph G contains a four-cycle-free subgraph with at least 1/(k-1) fraction of the edges of G. We give a new and simple proof of this result.

In the same paper Kühn and Osthus also showed that a 2k-cycle-free graph which is obtained by pasting together four cycles has average degree at most 16k and asked whether there exists a number d=d(k) such that every 2k-cycle-free graph which is obtained by pasting together 2l-cycles has average …

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

To explain a bit of the background about how I met the guy, my junior year of high school I was in a club called FCCLA. I wasn’t particularly popular with the young men at the time, so when a boy from another school at the competition kept leaning forward while we were sitting on the bus to look at me and smile, I was quite surprised. All of my friends noticed and were badgering me into talking to him. So once we got off the bus, rather than putting up with their teasing, I decided to walk over and …

Ultimate Spoons, Mealii Enos

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

Amber Rae: Yes, so it is played at the student athlete mentor spring training, um it’s a tradition that we have continued to do annually, we do it at the end of the first night of training as kind of our final, fun, competition after we’ve covered a lot of in depth information. And it’s, played similarly to spoons, um, with cards and ss—having the number of spoons minus on of the number of competitors. However the difference is that we play at the Bear Lake Training Center and we play by, hiding the spoons throughout the room um in …

Correlates Of Poor Mental Health In Early Pregnancy In Obese European Women, Matteo C. Sattler, Judith G.M. Jelsma, Annick Bogaerts, David Simmons, Gernot Desoye, Rosa Corcoy, Juan M. Adelantado, Alexandra Kautzky-Willer Dec 2017

Correlates Of Poor Mental Health In Early Pregnancy In Obese European Women, Matteo C. Sattler, Judith G.M. Jelsma, Annick Bogaerts, David Simmons, Gernot Desoye, Rosa Corcoy, Juan M. Adelantado, Alexandra Kautzky-Willer

Paediatrics Publications

Background: Depression during pregnancy is associated with higher maternal morbidity and mortality, and subsequent possible adverse effects on the cognitive, emotional and behavioral development of the child. The aim of the study was to identify maternal characteristics associated with poor mental health, in a group of overweight/obese pregnant women in nine European countries, and thus, to contribute to better recognition and intervention for maternal depression. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study, baseline data from early pregnancy (< 20 weeks) of the DALI (Vitamin D and Lifestyle Intervention for gestational diabetes mellitus prevention) study were analyzed. Maternal mental health was assessed with the World Health Organization Well-Being Index (WHO-5). Women were classified as having a low (WHO-5 ≤ 50) or high wellbeing. Results.: A total of 735 pregnant women were included. The prevalence of having a low wellbeing was 27.2%, 95% CI [24.0, 30.4]. Multivariate analysis showed independent associations between low wellbeing and European ethnicity, OR = .44, 95% CI [.25,.77], shift work, OR = 1.81, 95% CI [1.11, 2.93], insufficient sleep, OR = 3.30, 95% CI [1.96, 5.55], self-efficacy, OR = .95, 95% CI [.92,.98], social support, OR = .94, 95% CI [.90,.99], and pregnancy-related worries (socioeconomic: OR = 1.08, 95% CI [1.02, 1.15]; health: OR = 1.06, 95% CI [1.01, 1.11]; relationship: OR = 1.17, 95% CI [1.05, 1.31]). Conclusions: Mental health problems are common in European overweight/obese pregnant women. The identified correlates might help in early recognition and subsequent treatment of poor mental health problems during pregnancy. This is important to reduce the unfavorable effects of poor mental health on pregnancy outcomes. Trial registration:ISRCTN70595832 , 02.12.2011.

Writing Goes Back To School: Exploring The “Institutional Practice Of Mystery” In A Graduate Education Program, Rosamund K. Stooke, Kathryn Hibbert Dec 2017

Writing Goes Back To School: Exploring The “Institutional Practice Of Mystery” In A Graduate Education Program, Rosamund K. Stooke, Kathryn Hibbert

Education Publications

Drawing on a qualitative case study of writing practices and pedagogies in one Canadian graduate Education program, this article discusses roles and responsibilities of course instructors for teaching and supporting academic writing at the master’s level. Data were collected through individual, semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 14 graduate students and eight professors and they were analyzed thematically. The discussion is framed by the academic literacies pedagogical framework (ACLITS). The data suggest that academic writing expectations can be sources of extreme stress for graduate students. The students and instructors lacked a common language to discuss student texts. In the absence of explicit …

Improving Transitions In Care For People With Dementia: The Cared Tool, Yuwen Deng, Jamie Bisset, Silk Lim, Maryssa Edwards Dec 2017

Improving Transitions In Care For People With Dementia: The Cared Tool, Yuwen Deng, Jamie Bisset, Silk Lim, Maryssa Edwards

Community Engaged Learning Final Projects

Transitions in Care are challenging for people with dementia due to impairments in communication and disorientation from being in a foreign environment. Transitions in care have lead to incidents of unnecessary physical and chemical restraints of this vulnerable population. To investigate how to optimize care transitions, qualitative descriptive information was collected through three personal interviews to gain a broader understanding of mechanisms of care transitions in London, ON. After conducting interviews and literature review, the CARED Tool was developed. The CARED Tool promotes social inclusion of patients with dementia through recognizing that people with dementia have complex needs, thereby allowing …
