Effects Of Restrained Eating On Episodic Memory And Implications For Homeostatic Appetite Regulation, Morgan Kindel Dec 2017

Effects Of Restrained Eating On Episodic Memory And Implications For Homeostatic Appetite Regulation, Morgan Kindel

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Recent studies in the fields of Psychology and Neuroscience suggest a relationship between episodic memory and appetite regulation. A majority of these studies have used BMI as an important variable in this relationship and have found mild episodic memory deficits to be more likely in individuals with higher BMI’s. The goal of this research was to determine whether restrained disordered eating, regardless of BMI, influenced episodic memory and appetite regulation. Initially, we predicted that individuals showing dietary restraint would show signs of a stronger episodic memory, and therefore would have weaker hunger cues and stronger satiety cues, and that in …

Comparison Of Environmental Perspectives Between France And The United States, Hannah Ritter Dec 2017

Comparison Of Environmental Perspectives Between France And The United States, Hannah Ritter

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The research I have conducted for my French Major Senior Thesis is my findings on the difference in governmental perspective on renewable energy and programs formed because of this perspective. I started with finding the French equivalent of the EPA; to them, known as le Ministre de Transition Ecologique et Solidaire. After this, I analyzed the two documents (the Strategic Plan and le Panorama) that they both provide to the public stating their goals for the coming year and progress made over the past year(s). I found that while France was indeed ahead of its neighbors and other countries, they …

“We Are Going Live In 3, 2, 1...”: Examining Liveness Amidst Streaming Technology, Jessica Jeanne Johnson Dec 2017

“We Are Going Live In 3, 2, 1...”: Examining Liveness Amidst Streaming Technology, Jessica Jeanne Johnson

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The products of the theatre, film, and television industries are becoming increasingly homogenized. The modes of entertainment which feature a live audience experience (film and theatre) have seen a gradual decrease in ticket sales to these experiences, while simultaneously there has been a rapidly increasing number of subscriptions to streaming services providing access to productions from all three mediums (film, theatre, television). This fact represents the public’s divergence from the idea of traditional “liveness.” Many scholars believe that liveness has the ability to manifest itself in many mediatized forms (such as in 3D, surround sound, etc.), and while this is …

Student Perspectives On Writing Assignments, Stephen Gallas, Bryan Wisch

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Collaborative writing is increasingly a focal point in modern writing pedagogy. When analyzing the benefits that collaborative writing has on students, however, there does not seem to be enough research conducted with regards to whether or not students actually prefer collaborative writing over individual writing. While the opinion of scholars on the matter is known, it would be useful to know where students stand on the issue, and whether or not writing preferences of individual writing students affect the process, as well as product, of writing. By conducting an IRB-approved survey on a class first-year composition students, the researchers have …

The Artistic And Anthropological Influence Of Lighting Design On Guests At The Disneyland Resort, Jennifer Pershon Dec 2017

The Artistic And Anthropological Influence Of Lighting Design On Guests At The Disneyland Resort, Jennifer Pershon

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Lighting design, while popularized by theatre, has emerged beyond the stage into real world environments and settings. Its advancement has led to an evolution of light, allowing for light to appear as a work of art independent from objects and productions despite lacking a tangible existence. As themed entertainment has grown into an entire industry of spectacle and performance, the concept of theme parks developed from one man’s dream to bring his animated films to life in a constructed environment for the promotion of imagination. Lighting design within the Disneyland Resort facilitates the ideologies of Walt Disney, utilizing its foundation …

An Ethnographic Exploration Of Pokémon Go, Ketzia Abramson

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The mobile app game, “Pokémon GO” became a worldwide phenomenon immediately following its initial release in the summer of 2016. Now, more than a year later, despite its fall from social domination and decline in popularity, POGO is still at the forefront for better understanding the future of communication and socialization in today’s ever growing digital age. This ethnographic study, aided by field research, observations, and literature review of both the app itself as well as the ‘Poké-verse,’ provides an in-depth analysis of how and why a mobile gaming app that utilizes no new forms of technology (augmented reality combined …

How Is Your Productivity Affected Based On Your App Usage?, Colette Noghreian

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

As technology becomes more prominent in society, it is crucial to investigate its effect on day to day life. The purpose of this study is to determine how the amount of time spent on iPhone applications affects how productive students feel in the span of one week. Results are tested through a survey which first determines general information about the student, and then guides students to navigate their phone settings and record the battery usage of the top three applications which use up the most battery. It is hypothesized that productivity decreases as battery usage increases due to the substantial …

The Impact Of Celebrity Endorsement Of A Conspiracy Theory On The Media Consumers, Lindsay Stern, Kendal Munyon, Hunter Davis Dec 2017

The Impact Of Celebrity Endorsement Of A Conspiracy Theory On The Media Consumers, Lindsay Stern, Kendal Munyon, Hunter Davis

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Celebrity endorsement has a strong influence on the general population. However, this effect was typically studied in the context of celebrities’ support for non- controversial topics. We wanted to see if celebrities would have the same effect when they supported controversial topics. It is hypothesized that those who are exposed to a liked celebrity endorsing a conspiracy theory will be more inclined to accept the theory.

Additionally, celebrity endorsement for a controversial topic has the potential to cause the celebrity to be less liked. If an individual learns that a celebrity supports a controversial topic like a conspiracy theory, an …

Oct4 Is Crucial For Transdifferentiation Of Hepatocytes To Biliary Epithelial Cells In An In Vitro Organoid Culture Model, Mboya Doffou, George Adams, William C Bowen, Shirish Paranjpe, Harish S Parihar, Huy Nguyen, George K Michalopoulos, Vishakha Bhave

PCOM Scholarly Works

BACKGROUND: Hepatocyte to biliary transdifferentiation has been documented in various models of bile duct injury. In this process, mature hepatocytes transform into mature biliary epithelial cells by acquiring biliary phenotypic markers. Several signaling pathways including PI3 kinase, Notch, Hes1, Sox9, and Hippo are shown to be involved in the process. However, if Oct4 is involved in hepatocyte to biliary transdifferentiation is unknown.

METHODS: We investigated the role of Oct4 in hepatocyte to biliary transdifferentiation utilizing an in vitro organoid culture system as a model of transdifferentiation. Oct4 was inhibited using adenovirus containing Oct4 shRNA. Hepatocyte specific HNF-4α and biliary specific …

Helping Children Understand: Using Picture Books To Age – Appropriately Explain Dance-Movement Therapy And Childhood Cancer, Megan Schaefer

Honors Theses

Cancer is the leading cause of childhood death by disease, and there are many different therapies available to patients. One of the most promising forms of therapy is Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT). DMT is an engaging and creative form of rehabilitation, and focuses on the interaction between the body and mind. With this exercise, patients are able to express their emotional processes through physical movement, allowing for an alternate form of communication.

The way that children engage in DMT is highly influenced by their age and developmental stage. When children are presented with a new task, it may be necessary for …

The Effects Of Repealing The Estate Tax And Reducing The Corporate Tax Rate Coupled With A Repatriation Act, Trenton Vanderlende

Honors Theses

Given that significant U.S. federal tax reform is taking place for the first time in over 30 years, this paper examines how changing specific tax provisions may affect the average individual taxpayer as well as the wealthiest 1% of Americans. Three potential federal tax law changes are addressed: repealing the estate tax, reducing the corporate statutory income tax rate, and offering a repatriation holiday for remitting the foreign profits earned by U.S. businesses. These changes are analyzed using publicly available data from U.S. Congressional hearings, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Based on this …

The Effect Of Drought On Phytochemical Active Compounds Content In Chamomile And Yarrow, H Rihan, B Mahmood, M Foulkes, S Burchett

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The effect of drought stress conditions on the phytochemical compounds content of German chamomile (Matricaia chamomilla L.), common yarrow and summer berries yarrow (Achillea millefolium L.) was investigated. Treatments contained drought stress 70% field capacity (FC) pots and control (well-watered 100% FC) pots under controlled glasshouse conditions. Freeze dried and ground leaves were extracted at room temperature using Shaking extraction with methanol (99.9%) as an efficient solvent in order to determine the phytochemical compositions of phenols and flavonoids from dried chamomile and yarrow leaves. Samples were then analysed using High performance liquid chromatography with ultra-violet detection (HPLC-UV). Five times sample …

A Novel Mutation In St14 At A Functionally Significant Amino Acid Residue Expands The Spectrum Of Ichthyosis-Hypotrichosis Syndrome., Leila Youssefian, Andrew Touati, Amir Hossein Saeidian, Omid Zargari, Sirous Zeinali, Hassan Vahidnezhad, Jouni Uitto

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the ST14 gene, encoding the serine protease matriptase, have been associated with ichthyosis-hypotrichosis syndrome (IHS), a Mendelian disorder with skin and hair manifestations which include, in addition to ichthyosis and hypotrichosis, hypohidrosis and follicular atrophoderma. However, the understanding of the specific consequences of mutations in ST14 on the development of this syndrome is incomplete.

RESULTS: Using a targeted next-generation sequencing array of 38 ichthyosis-associated genes on a large cohort of 180 ichthyosis patients from a primarily consanguineous background, a previously unreported homozygous p.Asp482Asn mutation in ST14 was identified in a patient with IHS. This mutation affects an …

The Free-Play Sandbox: A Methodology For The Evaluation Of Social Robotics And A Dataset Of Social Interactions, S Lemaignan, C Edmunds, E Senft, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Evaluating human-robot social interactions in a rigorous manner is notoriously difficult: studies are either conducted in labs with constrained protocols to allow for robust measurements and a degree of replicability, but at the cost of ecological validity; or in the wild, which leads to superior experimental realism, but often with limited replicability and at the expense of rigorous interaction metrics. We introduce a novel interaction paradigm, designed to elicit rich and varied social interactions while having desirable scientific properties (replicability, clear metrics, possibility of either autonomous or Wizard-of-Oz robot behaviours). This paradigm focuses on child-robot interactions, and builds on a …

An Alumnus Learns And Serves: Vincentian Mission In Education, Brian Crimmins Dec 2017

An Alumnus Learns And Serves: Vincentian Mission In Education, Brian Crimmins

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

My Dad would talk about the mission of St. John’s University—and how going to St. John’s was about more than just getting an education. It was also about a commitment to service. Funny thing was—at first, like many of my peers, I looked at St. John’s and saw an opportunity to celebrate the great tradition of college basketball while also getting an education. I didn’t realize at first that what my parents were saying and doing as I grew up—namely the importance of the Vincentian mission—would ring true in my life in such a profound and lasting manner, day in …

Reflections From The Road: Vincentian Hospitality Principles In Healthcare Education For The Indigent, John M. Conry Dec 2017

Reflections From The Road: Vincentian Hospitality Principles In Healthcare Education For The Indigent, John M. Conry

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Hospitality and health care are clearly connected, both etymologically and practically. Health care has traditionally been delivered in hospitals. Vincent de Paul and Louise de Marillac developed the concept and practice of Vincentian health care, demonstrating a preferential option for the poor. It is important that those who work in healthcare understand and remain committed to Vincentian and hospitality based health care, particularly for the indigent and marginalized. The need for Vincentian and hospitality-based health care remains relevant and necessary in contemporary society, as there remains health inequity, particularly for the poor.

Charism That Lives: Translating The Message Of St. Vincent De Paul For Today’S Teacher Education, Donald Mcclure, Judith F. Mangione Dec 2017

Charism That Lives: Translating The Message Of St. Vincent De Paul For Today’S Teacher Education, Donald Mcclure, Judith F. Mangione

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

One way that St. Vincent’s mission of compassion has expanded in modern times is through the work of Catholic Vincentian universities such as St. John’s University in Queens, New York. Consistent with Vincentian charism, the university’s mission statement proclaims, “Wherever possible, we devote our intellectual and physical resources to search out the causes of poverty and social injustice and to encourage solutions that are adaptable, effective, and concrete.” By working with and supporting preservice teachers, we can meet St. Vincent’s call to serve those in need. First, we provide a short biography of St. Vincent de Paul’s life, selecting parts …

Vincent De Paul And The Empowerment Of Women, Louise Sullivan Dec 2017

Vincent De Paul And The Empowerment Of Women, Louise Sullivan

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

The year 2017, marking the 400th Anniversary of the birth of the Vincentian Charism, has proven to be one of celebration for the entire Vincentian Family. While thousands of women are taking part in these celebrations around the world, the role women played in the birth and development of the charism is often overlooked. To do so however, is to miss a singularly significant aspect of Vincent de Paul’s genius, namely, the mission of charity he confided to the laity and particularly to women. Vincent de Paul’s life and his works would become what they were and what they continue …

Vincentian Social Justice: A Work In Progress, John E. Rybolt Dec 2017

Vincentian Social Justice: A Work In Progress, John E. Rybolt

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

St. Vincent de Paul has become a “universal” figure, a polymorph or shape-shifter, if you will. As a classic figure, somewhat like Jesus in certain circles, he is represented in various guises: founder, saint, simultaneously traditional and modern, even a revolutionary. Just like Vincent de Paul, the somewhat universal figure, his sons have attempted to follow Christ the evangelizer of the poor. Some have been more successful than others. But I am proud to be among their number: rich or poor in virtue, rich or poor in commitment, rich or poor in initiative or inventiveness.

Fire Within: The Spirituality That Sparked The Works Of St. Vincent De Paul, Robert P. Maloney Dec 2017

Fire Within: The Spirituality That Sparked The Works Of St. Vincent De Paul, Robert P. Maloney

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

Few saints have been as active as Vincent de Paul (1581-1660). Even if we highlight only his principal accomplishments, the list is stunning. His spirituality was the driving force that enflamed his everyday activity. For Vincent de Paul, a single focus inspired everything: the person of Jesus. “Jesus Christ is the Rule of the Mission,”5 (Vincent DePaul, n.d.,12:110) he told his followers. Jesus was to be the center of their life and activities. Vincent organized and formed others for the service of the poor. With remarkable creativity, confronting the needs at hand, he founded the Confraternities of Charity, the Congregation …

Journal Of Vincentian Social Action, November 2017, John T. Maher

Journal of Vincentian Social Action

This special edition of the Journal of Vincentian Social Action is a welcome addition to this unique, ground-breaking journal. It comes at a special time for the Congregation of the Mission, the community of priests and brothers who founded St. John’s University 147 years ago. Commonly called “Vincentians,” this religious community animates the mission of St. Vincent de Paul to benefit all members of this outstanding community of scholars, students, and staff. Vincent’s vision and mission came from a profound spiritual experience that guided his life and work; and the Vincentian charism is a living, organic reality in today’s world. …
