Dytiscidae And Noteridae Of Wisconsin (Coleoptera). Iv. Distribution, Habitat, Life Cycle, And Identification Of Species Of Agabini (Colymbetinae), William L. Hilsenhoff

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Adults of 24 species of Agabus and 10 species of Ilybius were collected in Wisconsin over the last 32 years. Keys and notes on identification are provided to facilitate identification of adults of these species and six others that may occur in Wisconsin. Agabus larvae were separated from those ofIlybius by the more posterior position of the dorsal seta of the basal setal whorl on the urogomphus, the number and location of srines on the metatarsi, and the presence of long setae on the last abdomina segment of most species. Information on distribution and abundance in Wisconsin, habitat. and …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

All three superficially inseparable species of Symmerista known to occur in eastern North America are sympatric in, and reach their western limit of distribution in, the southern Great Lakes and Midwest Regions of the United States. In this region two of the species also reach their southern limit of distribution (S. canicosta reaches its southwestern limit in North Dakota, South Dakota, Missouri, Kentucky, and North Carolina; S. leucitys reaches its southwestern limit in North Dakota, Missouri and Kentucky). The third species (S. albifrons) reaches its northwestern limit in Michigan and Wisconsin. All three species are here documented …

Prayers, Sex, Islam, And Electric Guitars: A Rhetorical Criticism Of The Taqwacores, Margaret Moore Dec 2017

Prayers, Sex, Islam, And Electric Guitars: A Rhetorical Criticism Of The Taqwacores, Margaret Moore

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Punk rock Islam may not a common phrase to hear in society, but it is quickly expanding in popularity and in effectiveness. A fiction book entitled "The Taqwacores" tells the story of faithful Muslims practicing punk rock Islam in their own way. The novel utilizes constittive rhetoric, a concept popularized by Maurice Charland, to create a social movement that is sweeping the world. This paper analyzes the novel using the tenets of constitutive rhetoric and uses social movement theory to understand the implications that a simple book is having upon the world. Punk rock Islam may not be such an …

The New Sexy: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Sherlock, Krystal A. Fogle, Toni Maisano Dec 2017

The New Sexy: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Sherlock, Krystal A. Fogle, Toni Maisano

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

In recent history, there have been movements advocating for conversation and change regarding traditional gender roles. As a central part of culture, British television has not escaped this scrutiny. BBC's crime drama Sherlock directed by Steven Moffat has received both critical acclaim and attention from the general public for its portrayal of women. In this essay, we venture into this conversation, and explore portrayals of existing gender roles and how the writers of the show choose to dissent with the audience's expectations of gender portrayal. We examine connections between past and present portrayals of the classic character, Sherlock Holmes, and …

The Sate Of Israel, Mythology, And The Valorized Bible, Gregory Jeffers Dec 2017

The Sate Of Israel, Mythology, And The Valorized Bible, Gregory Jeffers

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

I argue that the Christian Neo-conservatives (like many before them, including the Medieval crusaders) read the bible mythologically, and thus uproot the the bible from its traditional moral, theological, historical, and grammatical anchors in service to a specific eschatological vision. This shift is rhetorical in nature in that those receiving the biblical text now are not the same as those who originally received it, nor are they the same as the scholars, theologians, and historians who have been careful to read the text with integrity. The shift in audience is a shift in interpretive communities and thus a shift in …

Attachment, Trauma, And Intimacy With God, Jodie Kathleen Gardner Dec 2017

Attachment, Trauma, And Intimacy With God, Jodie Kathleen Gardner

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Attachment theory provides a robust framework for understanding spiritual development and perceptions of God. An integration of research from attachment theory, affective neuroscience, emotional information processing, and trauma, is clarifying the competing research findings involving compensation and correspondence in spiritual development. Empirical evidence suggests the distinction between explicit theological beliefs and implicit perception of God as an attachment figure may explain the discrepancy between compensatory practices and correspondence, and how one interacts with God, and copes with negative life events. Studies of post-traumatic stress disorder suggest specific association between the extreme stress of trauma and alterations in emotional processing. Trauma …

“This Whole Quest For Love”: The Role Of Narrative In The Bachelor, Suzanne Shedd Dec 2017

“This Whole Quest For Love”: The Role Of Narrative In The Bachelor, Suzanne Shedd

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Reality television has exploded into a popular culture phenomenon in recent years, and it is likely to remain a permanent media staple. With its spike in popularity, reality TV has attracted scholarly interest, but most of this attention focuses on audiences’ responses to and motivations for viewing these fact-based programs. This study, however, is more concerned with the rhetorical strategies employed in reality television that appeal to viewers and compel them to keep watching. Centering specifically on the immensely popular romance program The Bachelor, this study examines the narrative elements evident in the show that connect audiences to other stories …

The paper concludes with a section on the characteristics of true communities.

The Celebration Of Anne Sexton: Defining The Writers In Hollywood's Biopics, Christina Johnson Dec 2017

The Celebration Of Anne Sexton: Defining The Writers In Hollywood's Biopics, Christina Johnson

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Since the 1930’s, the Hollywood film industry has produced biographical films (biopics) that characterize the most sensational and renowned writers and poets of literary history. Although the drama of the struggling poet might seem ripe for cinematic exploration, one must question whether illustrating a poet’s life through the medium of film is an indeed felicitous avenue. For example, a plethora of Hollywood films have received brutal critiques due to their incorrect historical portrayal of the poets’ biographies. Furthermore, continuing developments in psychology are recasting the lives and work of many famous poets as intertwined with serious mental disturbances, such as …

Oppression And Resistance: Socialist Theory And Christianity In The Lord Of The Rings, Gregory Jeffers Dec 2017

Oppression And Resistance: Socialist Theory And Christianity In The Lord Of The Rings, Gregory Jeffers

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

I have applied the work of Iris Marion Young (socialist theorist and political philosopher) and Walter Wink (New Testament scholar and Peace activist) to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, arguing that although Young and Wink provide similar descriptions of oppression, their forms of resistance are largely divergent because Wink's, while far more radical and compelling as a story, requires the existence of the Christian God to work. I have read their prescriptions forresistance through de Certeau’s concepts of strategy (concerted and active resistance) and tactic (reactionary resistance). The Lord of the Rings demonstrates the way that Wink and …

Eschatological Minority Report: Transcendent Heaven, Patrick Ford Dec 2017

Eschatological Minority Report: Transcendent Heaven, Patrick Ford

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Far from a mere historical or theological curiosity, eschatology has a profound formative impact on the way adherents view life, purpose and their relationship to Creation. Typical contemporary conceptualizations of heaven in American evangelicalism describe an otherworldly, intangible and wholly spiritual realm in whichGod’s reign is complete and all the faithful reside in total peace and comfort after a final judgment. Such “transcendent-heaven” eschatology is vastly different from historically orthodox eschatology recorded through the eighteenth century and still maintained by the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches, among others. This historical-theological survey suggests that transcendent-heaven eschatology was first-articulated by Jonathan Edwards …

Sex, Sin And The Soul: How Galen’S Philosophical Speculation Became Augustine’S Theological Assumptions, Paul Anthony Dec 2017

Sex, Sin And The Soul: How Galen’S Philosophical Speculation Became Augustine’S Theological Assumptions, Paul Anthony

Conversations: A Graduate Student Journal of the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Theology

Augustine of Hippo may never have heard of Galen of Pergamum. Three centuries separated the two, as did an almost impassable geographic and cultural divide that kept the works of Galen and other Greek writers virtually unknown in the Latin west for a millennium. Yet Galenic assumptions about human sexuality and the materiality of the soul underlie Augustine’s signature doctrine of original sin. Galen’s influence was so widely felt in the Greek-speaking east that Christians almost immediately worked his assumptions into their own theologies. Their conclusions thus became the new assumptions that found their way into the library of Ambrose …

Use Of Ethanol-And-Turpentine-Baited Flight Traps To Monitor Pissodes Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) In Christmas Tree Plantations, L. K. Rieske, K. F. Raffa Dec 2017

Use Of Ethanol-And-Turpentine-Baited Flight Traps To Monitor Pissodes Weevils (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) In Christmas Tree Plantations, L. K. Rieske, K. F. Raffa

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Pissodes nemorensis and Pissodes strobi are major pests of pine production in eastern North America. Ethanol-and-turpentine baited traps were used here to monitor weevil populations in a Scotch pine Christmas tree plantation in Wisconsin. Baited pitfall traps were ineffective in trapping either weevil species. However, baited flight traps at 0.8 and 1.6 m above ground effectively captured flying weevils of both species, 70% of which were P. nemorensis. Females of both species were more attracted than males to the ethanoll turpentine baits. Significantly more female P. nemorensis and total P. nemorensis were trapped at a height of 0.8 m …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A microsporidium species, not previously reported, was found infecting field populations of the alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica, in Illinois. The pathogen is widely distributed thoughout the state. Percent infection ranged from 1 % to 50% at different collection locations. Characteristics of the microsporidium and possible modes of transmission are presented.

Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Monoterpenes Of Jack Pine Seedlings And Weight Gain Of Jack Pine Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Deborah G. Mccullough, Paul D. Swedenborg, Herbert M. Kulman Dec 2017

Effects Of Nitrogen Fertilization On Monoterpenes Of Jack Pine Seedlings And Weight Gain Of Jack Pine Budworm (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), Deborah G. Mccullough, Paul D. Swedenborg, Herbert M. Kulman

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Nine-month old jack pine (Pinus banksiana) seedlings were grown in a greenhouse under four nitrogen fertilization regimes. Levels of total nitrogen and five monoterpenes in new foliage were measured. Fertilization resulted in four significantly different levels of foliar nitrogen; means ranged from 1.8-4.5 percent dry weight. Contrary to predictions of resource availability theory, seedlings grown under the highest fertilization regime had higher foliar monoterpene levels than seedlings in the other treatments. Newly molted, sixth-instar female jack pine budworm (Choristoneura pinus pinus [Lepidoptera: Tortricidae]) larvae were allowed to feed for four days on new foliage of the seedlings. …

Solvent Deactivation Of Mimosa Webworm Larval Webbing (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), Robert C. North, Elwood R. Hart, Lu Mingxian Dec 2017

Solvent Deactivation Of Mimosa Webworm Larval Webbing (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), Robert C. North, Elwood R. Hart, Lu Mingxian

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Untreated larval webbing of the mimosa webworm, Homadaula anisocentra stimulated oviposition. Six-week-old webbing was as active as two-day-old webbing. Stimulatory activity of webbing was lost after rinsing with highly polar solvents, but not after rinsing with nonpolar solvents. Addition of the polar solvent rinses did not induce activity in other substrates nor restore activity to rinsed webbing. No differences in structure were found in a scanning electron microscope examination of unrinsed webbing and webbing rinsed with solvents of varying polarity.

Seasonal Abundance And Species Diversity Of Adult Tabanidae (Diptera) At Lake Lansing Park-North, Michigan, Jeffrey D. Strickler, Edward D. Walker Dec 2017

Seasonal Abundance And Species Diversity Of Adult Tabanidae (Diptera) At Lake Lansing Park-North, Michigan, Jeffrey D. Strickler, Edward D. Walker

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A two year study was undertaken to determine the seasonal abundance and diversity of adult deer flies and horse flies, to compare two methods of sampling (Malaise trap and sweep net), and to estimate attack rates by tabanids on people at Lake Lansing Park-North, Ingham County, Michigan, in 1990 and 1991. Tabanids were sampled using dry ice-baited Malaise traps, and by making over- head sweeps with a standard insect net while hiking a trail. Hybomitra spp. (299 individuals of 9 species) peaked in abundance in mid-May to early June in both years. Chrysops spp. (11,675 individuals of 14 species) and …

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The seasonal flight patterns of 92 species of Miridae collected in window traps in a southern Illinois black walnut plantation are compared with similar data from a North Carolina black walnut plantation. Flying height distributions and seasonal flight activities of Amblytylus nasutus, Deraeocoris nebulosus, Leptopterna dolabrata, Lopidea heidemanni, Lygus lineolaris, and Plagiognathus politus are considered in detail. Six species are newly recorded for Illinois.

Absence Of Behavioral Induction In Oviposition Preference Of Papilio Glaucus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), J Mark Scriber Dec 2017

Absence Of Behavioral Induction In Oviposition Preference Of Papilio Glaucus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), J Mark Scriber

The Great Lakes Entomologist

This study addressed the possible behaviora induction effects of previous exposure to several specific host plants on subsequent host "preference hierarchy" and "specificity" (i.e .. how far down the ranking order a female will go) the most polyphagous swallowtail butterfly in the world, Papilio glaucus (Papilionidae). Multi-choice preference bioassays using individual females in revolving arenas were used to assess one of the potentially most significant non-genetic sources of variation: learned (or induced) oviposition preferences. Results of the 4-choice studies using tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera; Magnoliaceae), black cherry (Prunus serotina; Rosaceae), quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides; …

Underground Dinosaur Tracksite Inside A Karst Of Southern France: Early Jurassic Tridactyl Traces From The Dolomitic Formation Of The Malaval Cave (Lozère), Jean-David Moreau, Vincent Trincal, Daniel André, Louis Baret, Alain Jacquet, Michel Wienin

International Journal of Speleology

Although underground dinosaur tracksites inside anthropic cavities such as mines or tunnels are well-known throughout the world, footprints inside natural karstic caves remain extremely rare. The Malaval Cave (Lozère, southern France) is well-known by speleologists for the abundance and the exceptional quality of acicular and helictite aragonite speleothems. Recent palaeontological prospecting inside this cave allowed the discovery of tridactyl dinosaur tracks. Here, a detailed study of theropod footprints was for the first time conducted inside a natural karstic cave, using photogrammetric imaging technique. Tracks from the Malaval Cave are located inside the “Super-Blanches” galleries. More than 26 footprints were identified. …

Can Self-Compassion Reduce Depression And Anxiety In Adolescents? Dec 2017

Can Self-Compassion Reduce Depression And Anxiety In Adolescents?

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Self-compassion has been explored as a new intervention strategy for adolescents suffering from depression and anxiety. These two mental illnesses are increasingly prevalent among this age group due to a variety of factors, including transitional difficulties and social stressors (Muris, Meesters, Pierik & de Kock, 2016; Neff & McGeh ee, 2010). Studies have shown that individuals who practice self-compassion have fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety (Bluth & Blanton, 2015). Conversely, insecure attachment, low self-esteem, and belief in the personal fable, symptoms common in depressed and anxious individuals, negatively correlate with self-compassion (Bluth & Blanton, 2015; Muris et al., 2016; …

Effects Of Extracurricular Activities And Physical Activity On Academic Success

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

In this paper, I provide a comprehensive review of recent literature (published since 2010) regarding the relation between academic success and participation in extracurricular activities. I examine the direct effects—both positive and negative—that such participation has on the academic performance of students of all grade levels. Subsequently, because sports constitute a large portion of the extracurricular spectrum, I also examine studies that analyze t he effects of physical activity on academic performance. These studies suggest that extracurricular activities may have a positive effect on academics, especially when they contribute to a balanced life, self-confidence, an increased sense of personal duty …

The Use Of Positive Psychological Methods By Religious Leaders And Their Effects On Depression In The Lgb Community Dec 2017

The Use Of Positive Psychological Methods By Religious Leaders And Their Effects On Depression In The Lgb Community

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Depression among lesbians, gays, and bisexuals (LGB individuals) is a complex issue involving many possible factors, including internalized homophobia and discrimination. Religiosity and religious leaders can exert both protecting and risk-inducing influences o n LGB depression, depending on how liberal or conservative the congregation’s stance is. The more conservative and non-gay-affirming a congregation is, the more likely an LGB individual is to develop depression (Gattis, Woodford, & Han, 2014). Positive psychology may help decrease the impact of intolerance on LGB individuals (Burckhardt, Manicavasagar, Batterham, & Hadzi-Pavlovic, 2016; Vaughan & Rodriguez, 2014). Through the use of positive psychology methods, such as …
