Traf3 Negatively Regulates Platelet Activation And Thrombosis, Rui Zhang, Guoying Zhang, Binggang Xiang, Xiaofeng Chen, Lijang Tang, Shaojun Shi, Yani Liu, Xun Ai, Ping Xie, Zhenyu Li

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

CD40 ligand (CD40L), a member of the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily, binds to CD40, leading to many effects depending on target cell type. Platelets express CD40L and are a major source of soluble CD40L. CD40L has been shown to potentiate platelet activation and thrombus formation, involving both CD40-dependent and -independent mechanisms. A family of proteins called TNF receptor associated factors (TRAFs) plays key roles in mediating CD40L-CD40 signaling. Platelets express several TRAFs. It has been shown that TRAF2 plays a role in CD40L-mediated platelet activation. Here we show that platelet also express TRAF3, which plays a negative role in …

Buprenorphine For Medication-Assisted Treatment Of Opioid Use Disorder In Pregnancy: Relationship To Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome, Niraj R. Chavan, Kristin Ashford, Amanda T. Wiggins, Michelle R. Lofwall, Agatha S. Critchfield

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

Objective To examine the relationship between antepartum buprenorphine dose for medication-assisted treatment (MAT) of opioid use disorder (OUD) and incident neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS).

Study Design We performed a prospective cohort study of pregnant women with a singleton gestation diagnosed with OUD and receiving buprenorphine for MAT at a tertiary care academic institution from July 2015 to January 2017. We divided the study cohort into two groups—pregnancies with versus without NOWS. Substance abuse patterns in pregnancy, maternal, and neonatal clinical outcomes were compared.

Results The incidence of NOWS was 31.11% (n = 28/90) in our study cohort. Pregnancies …

Pressure Ulcer Prevention: Innovation And Research Produce Positive Outcomes, Angela Becker Dec 2017

Pressure Ulcer Prevention: Innovation And Research Produce Positive Outcomes, Angela Becker

DNP and Student Works

Acquiring a pressure ulcer while in the hospital is a devastating outcome for the patient and their family. Pressure ulcer formation in the medical surgical patient population reflects a gap in practice because it is the nursing staff's responsibility to reposition and protect the patient from developing pressure ulcers. The purpose of this project was to answer the following question. For patients on a medical surgical unit, how does the implementation of a pressure ulcer toolkit, along with the use of an automated patient repositioner (APR), affect the rate of the hospital acquired ulcers over a ten week period?

An Evaluation Of A Care Conference Model And Improvement In The Transition Process For Medically Complex Pediatric Patients Between Inpatient And Outpatient Care, Tamara Van Kampen Dec 2017

An Evaluation Of A Care Conference Model And Improvement In The Transition Process For Medically Complex Pediatric Patients Between Inpatient And Outpatient Care, Tamara Van Kampen

Doctoral Projects

Medically complex and/or fragile pediatric patients are high utilizers of health care dollars. This population represents less than one percent of the general pediatric population, yet they account for more than 30% of pediatric healthcare costs. These patients tend to have longer lengths of stay in the hospital, high readmission rates, and lower healthcare satisfaction scores. They also have multiple transitions between inpatient and outpatient care which increases the opportunity for medical errors. Research has shown that care conferences attended by key stakeholders tend to reduce readmissions and healthcare utilization while improving satisfaction rates and patient outcomes. Research also shows …

Universal Signal Conditioning Technique For Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors In Plc And Scada Applications, Gary Allwood, Graham Wild, Steven Hinkley Dec 2017

Universal Signal Conditioning Technique For Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors In Plc And Scada Applications, Gary Allwood, Graham Wild, Steven Hinkley

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Optical fibre sensors, such as Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBGs), are growing in their utilisation, although very niche in their applications. To enable a more diverse range of end users, expensive application-specific optical fibre interrogation hardware needs to be made compatible with and, ideally, easily incorporated into existing instrumentation and measurement hardware. The Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is an ideal example of hardware used for data acquisition in many industries. As such, a module that can be connected into an existing PLC slot to collect data from electrically-neutral, EMI-immune and versatile FBG sensors is of significant advantage to the growing optical …

Book Review: Justice Triage, Milan Markovic Dec 2017

Book Review: Justice Triage, Milan Markovic

Faculty Scholarship

Benjamin Barton and Stephanos Bibas’s new book, Rebooting Justice: More Technology, Fewer Lawyers, and the Future of Law, is an eloquent exemplar of the deregulation literature. What sets Rebooting Justice apart from other works in the genre is that Barton and Bibas do not treat deregulation as a panacea. Their starting point is that Americans are not well served by lawyers’ monopoly over the legal services market, but they do not envision a world in which every legal problem is resolved ably and efficiently. Their goal is much more modest: a less complex legal system in which lawyer …

Gödel’S Incompleteness Theorem, Emma Buntrock Dec 2017

Gödel’S Incompleteness Theorem, Emma Buntrock

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

In 1931 Gödel released his Incompleteness Theorem. His theorem was the opposite of what other mathematicians at the time wanted, but it was very influential to realize there is no perfectly complete formal systems. The incompleteness theorem is based of the idea that in a consistent system there are pieces that can not be proved or disproved, causing for incompleteness. The second part of that idea is that such a system can not prove that itself is consistent, which also makes it incomplete. I will verify theses proofs using a series of logic problems that show how a system is …

Production Of Extended Techniques On The Flute, Sarah Curtiss, Brianna Meissner, Mari Tonsfeldt, Alexis Schwinghamer, Sierra Wenning

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

When most people think of the flute, the traditional, classical flute sound comes to mind. This research delved into the study of contemporary, non-traditional sounds (extended techniques) because of the number of advantages that the study of extended techniques can provide to all aspects of flute playing. For example, certain techniques can strengthen the flexibility and control of the facial muscles, which helps with tone production, while other techniques can help to develop better awareness and control of intonation. Many extended techniques require different levels of breath control and more comprehensive physical strength, as well. In researching extended techniques, it …

Winning Strategy For Dice Game Farkle, Karlee Westrem Dec 2017

Winning Strategy For Dice Game Farkle, Karlee Westrem

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

The dice game Farkle uses 6 six-sided dice and the objective of the game is to be the first person to score 10,000 points. The dice game involves rolling against the odds and possibly lose your running total points. Generating functions are used to determine the probability of various roll patterns and their expected values of points earned given the number of dice rolled. We are assuming the maximum Farkle score is attained for each roll for computations. The probability of rolling a Farkle for each case and the expected values are used as guidelines for decision-making during game play.

Dynamic Façades Towards Greener Energy Efficient Buildings, Rayce Martin, Iraj Mamaghani, Nikoloas Nikitas

Essential Studies UNDergraduate Showcase

Mitigating global climate change is a major contemporary topic of research and is of major interest to today’s societies. Developed countries the top contributors to the destruction of the climate with buildings in these countries being one of the reasons. Buildings in developed countries account for 20-40% of the total primary energy consumption. This high-energy consumption produces approximately 36% of the total CO2 emissions since fossil-fuels are the primary source of energy in almost all developed countries. To combat this, researchers have investigated wind energy harvesting technologies that produce electricity while also being considered “green”, or low carbon dioxide emitters. …

Springsteen: In The American Tradition, Alex Mcdonough Dec 2017

Springsteen: In The American Tradition, Alex Mcdonough

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

Springsteen’s music serves as a platform for not only the working poor, but also the pariahs of American society. Like other classic American singer-songwriters, Springsteen uses his music to explore tragedy in the American life, imbuing each song with a quiet, sometimes darkly humorous humanity. Through his songs, Springsteen has defined an altogether different type of American story, one that weaves tragedy, comedy, and the tedious minutiae of daily life. Springsteen considers each element of every story he tells to be distinct and important in its own way, creating a sense of purpose for even the lowest of the low.

Usarray Imaging Of Continental Crust In The Conterminous United States, Xiaofei Ma, Anthony R. Lowry Dec 2017

Usarray Imaging Of Continental Crust In The Conterminous United States, Xiaofei Ma, Anthony R. Lowry

Geosciences Faculty Publications

The thickness and bulk composition of continental crust provide important constraints on the evolution and dynamics of continents. Crustal mineralogy and thickness both may influence gravity anomalies, topographic elevation, and lithospheric strength, but prior to the inception of EarthScope’s USArray, seismic measurements of crustal thickness and properties useful for inferring lithology are sparse. Here we improve upon a previously published methodology for joint inversion of Bouguer gravity anomalies and seismic receiver functions by using parameter space stacking of cross correlations of modeled synthetic and observed receiver functions instead of standard H-κ amplitude stacking. The new method is applied to estimation …

Carbon Nanotube Prosthetic Venous Valve, Ryan Coulton Packer Dec 2017

Carbon Nanotube Prosthetic Venous Valve, Ryan Coulton Packer

Theses and Dissertations

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is a disease of the lower limbs that affects millions of people in the United States. It is categorized by constant venous hypertension, which can lead to swelling of the legs, pain, skin changes and ulcers. One of the widely known symptoms that can lead to CVI is varicose veins. The main source of the problem of CVI is incompetent venous valves. The purpose of venous valves is to direct blood through the veins to the heart and prevent retrograde flow to the lower limbs. CVI can be caused by leg injury, pregnancy, genetics, age, and …

The Star-Forming Main Sequence Of Dwarf Low Surface Brightness Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh Dec 2017

The Star-Forming Main Sequence Of Dwarf Low Surface Brightness Galaxies, Stacy S. Mcgaugh

Faculty Scholarship

We explore the star-forming properties of late-type, low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies. The star-forming main sequence (SFR-M∗) of LSB dwarfs has a steep slope, indistinguishable from unity (1.04 ± 0.06). They form a distinct sequence from more massive spirals, which exhibit a shallower slope. The break occurs around M∗ ≈ 1010 Mo , and can also be seen in the gas mass-stellar mass plane. The global Kennicutt-Schmidt law (SFR-Mg) has a slope of 1.47 ± 0.11 without the break seen in the main sequence. There is an ample supply of gas in LSB galaxies, which have gas depletion times well …

Sohni Mahiwal Preserving South Asian Cultural Heritage Through Animated Storytelling, Anem Syed

Theses

Majority of Pakistani youth is not enthralled by the country’s rich cultural heritage. There is less public knowledge on the subject. This translates into less appreciation or interest. The academic system is largely responsible for this. It imparts a conservative history of undivided India, focuses on politics, ignores its nuanced culture. Unless students venture into specialized fields of art and humanities, most do not get stimulated to study history. Additionally, today when digital learning is on the rise, there is a lack of relevant sources on the subject. This thesis is creating a digital source. It is re-packaging an Indian …
